  • ‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ Set to Slaughter the Competition

Who says only high-budget movies make a killing at the box office?

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, is poised to gross $25 million to $30 million in box office sales this weekend. With a production budget of only $5 million, it’s safe to say this film will score a major profit.

In order to take top honors at the movies this holiday weekend, however, this Latino-targeted horror flick will have to take down Frozen and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, both of which have been raking in millions of their own.

Disney’s animated family film Frozen has made a respective $275 million since its opening, and is projected to make another $20 million this weekend alone.

The Hobbit sequel has earned about $209 million since its opening, and has been No. 1 at the box office for the last three weeks.

The Marked Ones features Andrew Jacobs as “Jesse,” a young Latino in Oxnard. Much to his dismay, he is marked for possession by the demons from the previous Paranormal Activity movies.

Before you rush off to the theater, check out this review:

Celebs and fans alike went to Twitter to discuss their excitement and personal reviews of the flick:

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is the fifth production in this “found-footage” franchise that provides both scares and laughs simultaneously. Paranormal Activity was the first in the series, and was also created on a small budget, but scored big at the box office with $109 million in sales. The 2012 release of Paranormal Activity 4 was still profitable, but only brought in about $53.9 million in sales.

The Marked Ones is the only new release this weekend. Although Frozen and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug are its top competitors, it will still have to play against fan favorites Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Wolf of Wall Street to earn the top spot.

  • Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Watch the Trailer

Lest we imagine Hollywood lacks strategy in trailer timing, several Horror flicks are seeing the light of day in advance of Halloween. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, exposed the trailer yesterday (shown above). Fans of the franchise will find the same heart-stopping thrills and “found-footage” camera tricks they’ve come to love, but fair warning, this is not Paranormal Activity 5. It is considered a Latino spinoff. The Marked Ones appears in theaters starting January 2014 and 5 will follow in October.

The setting for this version is said to be a “heavily Latino-populated region of California” circa 2012. And the producers are betting you want to get in on some of the Activity, promoting a contest asking fans to, “Tag your city,” in a photo with #TheMarkedOnes, to bring the film to the winning city first (see below).

Early reviewers credit The Marked Ones with staying true to the mythology of the first three films rather than, “the muddled” fourth. Other than that however, it may also be a regurgitation of a gimmick whose time has passed.

Trading on the old babysitter motif of the horror genre, All Hallow’s Eve, will be in theaters just in time for, well, All Hallow’s Eve. The cast is a series of relative unknowns, not uncommon for the genre, led by redhead Katie Maguire who has some credits in shorts, soaps and as a waitress in an episode of Sex and the City.

And of course, we’ve all been enjoying the trailers of the revamped Carrie, premiering in theaters today. Adapted from the 1976 adaptation of the Stephen King story, this time Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, Dark Shadows, Hugo) plays the troubled teen and yes, ladies, hold onto your feminine products, Carrie suffers through that old horrible locker room shower scene all over again.

  • Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Trailer Release

“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” has officially been hyped. The trailer, released today, is terrifying.

The movie comes out in January, but already has the makings of a first-rate thriller, just like its predecessors. It is marketed as a Latino spin-off of the successful “Paranormal Activity” franchise.

The premise is this: Some teenager no-goodnicks (Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Carlos Pratts and Gloria Sandova) led by 20-something Jessie, break into the home of a recently deceased woman and record what they find. The home is unsettling in it’s ambiance with voodoo trinkets and dreamcatchers all over the place.

In the apartment is a box of video tapes marked “Katie and Kristi” ( a nod to characters from the other “Paranormal” films), some photographs of Jesse and a whole lot of blood. The house is obviously home to some unrestful dead, who decide to follow the kids home and disturb their lives as well as the lives of all those around them.

Of course this one will continue in true “Paranormal Activity” fashion that we’ve grown to know and love, with shaky “found footage” format. Eeek. Makes it seem so real, doesn’t it?

This one isn’t “Paranormal Activity 5”, but that is actually a film that is also on its way. That one is slated to hit theaters in the United States after “Marked Ones”, on October 25, 2014, just in time for Halloween…

Makes you want to go out and buy a house, doesn’t it? YIkes!
