  • Giuliana Rancic Stuns in Purple Gown at SAG Awards

Giuliana Rancic wowed onlookers as she worked the red carpet at the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday night. Her purple satin gown, accessorized simply with a black belt and understated earrings, drew a lot of favorable attention.

As co-host of E! Network’s flagship entertainment industry news show, Rancic is currently one of the best known celebrity hosts. Rancic also co-hosts E!’s Fashion Police, along with Joan Rivers, Kelly Osbourne, and George Kotsiopoulos.

The Fashion Police quartet gets together after big Hollywood events to critique celebrity fashions. As a presumed expert on the subject, it’s no surprise that Rancic consistently impresses at awards ceremonies and similar events.

According to Rancic, her gown was made by Lebanese designer Basil Soda. The color of the gown drew references to color authority Pantone’s Color of the Year “Radiant Orchid.”

Just last week, Rancic was on another red carpet, this one at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony.

Rancic and her husband Bill star in their own reality show Giuliana and Bill in which they’ve chronicled Rancic’s fight against breast cancer and their struggles with infertility. The series premiered in August 2009 and wrapped its sixth season this year. It moved from Style Network to E! in October following NBC Universal’s decision to launch its new cable network Esquire on Style.

  • Colors for 2014: Hair Trends to Watch For

Unlike cheap hair color, vibrant hair colors are not fading any time soon.

The 2014 hair color predictions are in full swing, ranging from fuchsia to pearl-essence tones, and embracing newer techniques like Bayalage and Sombre hair coloring.

On December 5, Pantone Inc., a corporation best known for its Pantone Matching System, announced its color of the year on the “Today” Show: Radiant Orchid, a “modern and versatile shade” for 2014.

The experts at Pantone note: “Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows.” Like other vivid colors, Radiant Orchid also contrasts well with neutrals including grays.

According to Examiner.com, Radiant Orchard can be professionally applied as ombre highlights over blondes, or used as the ever-popular bayalage with brunettes.

Bayalage is a technique used by professionals who are experienced in hand-painted color effects. It has a more natural or “rooty” look.

Another popular hair technique is Sombre. The look focuses on a gradual gradation of hair color from scalp to ends.

“The sombré technique is a fantastic evolution from ombré,” said Jason Backe, L’Oréal Professionnel Artist. “There is no drastic change from dark to light, instead we see an effortless and natural evolution of color with just the right amount of dimension, and the results are major.”

In addition to the fun, bold tones, the gentle pearl-essence colors give younger women the silver and gray tones without aging them.

However, if you decide to venture into one (or more) of the trending tones, visit a professional. Some popular over-the-counter brands can significantly damage your hair.
