    Pajamas: The Newest Fashion Craze

How many times have we rolled out of bed in our pajamas and taken the kids to school, gone to class, or run to the corner market? Enough to know that you usually would prefer not to be seen by most of your social circle. Go ahead and take off the gigantic dark sunglasses, step out of the car and stroll your way into whatever early morning visit that awaits your presence…in your pajamas.

New York September Fashion Week is always a must-see event to snag a peek at the latest trends, and there’s always a style or two that raises the perfectly tweezed eyebrow. This year it was pajamas. Most were pretty skeptical at first mention of the next big trend, envisioning baggy sweats or yet another scantily clad lingerie model traipsing down the runway. Designer Alexander Wang calmed the nitpicking nerves of New York Fashion Week when he unveiled his take on the trend with classy collared shorts sets in simple solids and pinstripes.

Fashion gurus warn against taking this trend too far, citing a few do’s and don’t if you dare to tackle the pajama trend. Always wear heels, dress up the look (no wrinkles please) and when in doubt just look towards the celebs for guidance.

Marc Jacobs has long been known for sporting classy, dressed up pajamas around town, and Rihanna donned the look as she walked the red carpet in pj’s at Barclays Center in Brooklyn looking anything but the girl who just rolled out of bed.

Just as society has varying views on what’s appropriate to wear in public, this newest fashion trend will garner interpretations from across the spectrum. Lingerie is pajamas. Some of us sleep in the nude. Philosophy students all over the globe will argue that the pajama trend is what you make it. If you can fall asleep in it, you can call it pajamas. So, when it comes time for retailers to start purchasing this fashion free-for-all, where would they start? Lace teddies to the office and over-sized sweats to jury duty is not what designers are hoping for.

Personally, I say wear whatever you want and make your own fashion statement. I think Grandpa has it down pat in his footed onesie pajama ensemble. Warm, functional, and it goes with his eyes.

  • Christmas Pajamas: Are They A Tradition For Your Family?

Every family has special Christmas traditions that they look forward to every year. Some families cut down their own trees, others decorate their homes with lights, some light special candles and some buy new Christmas pajamas to wear on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. If Christmas pajamas aren’t already a tradition for your family, there are several reasons you should consider making them one.

Matching Christmas pajamas can add a feeling of togetherness for your family. Even if parents do not want to wear them, siblings may enjoy matching for the night and next morning. Children may enjoy picking out their Christmas pajamas every year or being surprised to see the new ones they receive.

Still not convinced that dressing in plaid is right for your family? Think about the money you would save on Christmas photos. Sure you can pay a professional photographer hundreds of dollars to pose your family into awkward poses in front of cliche backgrounds, but why not go for a more natural alternative. Gather your family in front of the Christmas tree or fireplace on Christmas morning while wearing your matching pajamas and capture the memories of Christmas. You can even use your Christmas pajama photo on next year’s Christmas card.

One of the best reasons to make Christmas pajamas part of your holiday tradition is that they allow parents or grownups to be part of the magic of Christmas. When children see their parents picking out pajamas to match them and taking part in the holidays on their level, they feel a special bond and will look forward to doing the same thing every year until they grow up and pass the tradition down to their own children,

So go ahead and buy those matching red and green pajamas, leave your hair messy in the morning and have some relaxing Christmas fun that will possibly turn into a much anticipated Christmas tradition for your family. Remember, the family that dresses in matching pajamas together stays together.

    Pajamas Provided For Homeless Children

Did you know that something as small as a pair of pajamas could change a child’s life? Genevieve Piturro, 52, realized this while she was volunteering to read to children at a homeless shelter, in New York, fourteen years ago. After reading to the children, she noticed that they would get into their beds fully clothed, and it made her wonder what kind of difference it would make if they had a clean pair of pajamas to put on before bed.

“When I finished reading to them, they’d simply get into bed with their clothes on,” Piturro said. “The police had brought them in wearing nothing but the clothes on their back, clothes that were often dirty, sometimes covered in blood. They were alone and frightened, and given nothing but food,” she continued. “As I turned to leave one night, a little girl in a Chicago shelter whispered in my ear, ‘Please, don’t forget me.’ People come in and out of their lives, and they’re forgotten.”

After that night, Piturro made it her own personal mission to provide the children some sort of hope by showing that, at least one person, cared about them. She started asking people around her for donations of pajamas and books. Over the past fourteen years, through her non-profit organization the Pajama Program, Piturro has provided children in 32 states with over 2 million pairs of pajamas and books.

“This is the first stop for children before they’re placed in foster care, and having warm beautiful pajamas makes their transition a little bit less traumatic,” says Ronald E. Richter, Commissioner of the New York City Administration for Children’s Services. “It’s hard to say whether the fear goes away when the volunteers are here, but, in those moments, it helps them know that there are caring people out there. Having another adult comfort them makes them feel as though they’re okay.”

Piturro says they are always in need of donation and urges people not to forget about the older children and teenagers. “Children are losing hope, and we have to step up to the plate. We always need more pajamas, especially because the kids who are traumatized are wetting and soiling themselves, not even just the little ones, but teenagers, too,” said Piturro. “They’re afraid, there’s a lot of anxiety. They’re so nervous about being in a new place, where they’re going to be, what’s happening.”

“People forget about the bigger kids. When they’re 10 or 11, they know the score: adoption won’t happen, and they’d be lucky to find a foster family,” Piturro continued. “They’re so lonely and defeated, and when a box arrives at a shelter and it’s only filled with stuff for the little kids, that’s a double heartbreak for them. We beg for sizes 12, 14 in kids, and adult small and medium for teenagers so they’re remembered, too.”
