  • Ozzie Guillen would like to Manage the Chicago Cubs

The former White Sox manager, Ozzie Guillen, is intent on staying in Chicago and said, during a recent interview, that he would definitely want the opportunity to be the new manager of the Chicago Cubs.

The President of the Chicago Cubs, Theo Epstein, has not yet contacted Guillen for the position, but Guillen knows he has what it takes to take the Cubs to the World Series, like he did with the White Sox in 2005.

Epstein says that the team is in search of “a proven leader”. “We know what we’re looking for and I think we’re going to find it,” said Epstein.

‘‘If they call, I will appreciate it; if they don’t, I keep waiting,’’ Guillen told the Chicago Sun-Times. ‘‘I want to go back to managing. We’ll see what happens.’

When asked why he would want to coach the Cubs, he had a very logical reason: he did not want to leave Chicago. ‘‘First of all, I live in Chicago,’’ Guillen said. ‘‘Second of all, I know what direction they’re going from watching their games and reading the papers. Winning on both sides of the city, not too many people would have that opportunity. To get it done on both sides of the city, wow, that would be special. Especially for me because I live there all year long and want to live in Chicago the rest of my life.”

Ozzie Guillen Suspended For 5 Games, Apologizes

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has incensed the Cuban community in Miami with comments he made to Time Magazine about his feelings toward dictator Fidel Castro, and today he’ll have to eat a little bit of crow.

“I respect Fidel Castro,” Guillen said in the magazine interview. “You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that (SOB) is still here.”

The comments caused a backlash against Guillen and have several people calling for his resignation. The chairman of the Florida Hispanic Legislative Caucus says he wants “punitive measures” taken against the outspoken manager. All this comes at possibly the worst time, since the Marlins have recently debuted a new stadium in Little Havana in the hopes of drawing bigger crowds this season.

In the wake of scheduled protests today, Guillen has made plans to publicly apologize to Miami and the Cuban community, saying he is embarrassed by his words.

“I want the people there. Whoever feels about it, ask me any questions. I want you to ask what you ask, because I feel bad? Yes. I feel embarrassed? Yes,” Guillen said yesterday.

UPDATE: The Marlins have announced they are suspending Guillen for five games.

“The Marlins acknowledge the seriousness of the comments attributed to Guillen,” team reps said in a statement.”The pain and suffering caused by Fidel Castro cannot be minimized especially in a community filled with victims of the dictatorship.”

During his apology today, Guillen spoke in Spanish: “I feel like I betrayed my Latin community,” Guillen said, according to ESPN’s translation of his comments in Spanish. “I am here to say I am sorry with my heart in my hands and I want to say I’m sorry to all those people who are hurt indirectly or directly.”

Guillen says the suspension takes a backseat to the damage he’s done to his relationship with the Cuban community and that he is willing to do anything he can to repair it.

“I will do everything to try to make things be better,” he said. “I’m willing to do everything in my power, in the Marlins power, to do everything I can to help this community.”

  • Ozzie Guillen Hearts Castro, Offends Cuban Community

The Miami Marlins debuted a new air-conditioned stadium last week in the hopes that it would draw in bigger crowds than they’re used to seeing, but a recent gaffe made by team manager Ozzie Guillen could undo all their hard work.

Guillen, who has a World Series win under his belt as well as a reputation for speaking his mind, said in a recent Time magazine story that he “loves” infamous dictator Fidel Castro, a statement which offended the sensibilities of the Cuban population–especially those living in Miami.

“I respect Fidel Castro,” Guillen said. “You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that (SOB) is still here.”

Various requests for Guillen’s resignation have been declared by the Cuban community in Miami and protests are expected tomorrow.

“We strongly disagree with the opinion of Ozzie Guillen, and consider it a provocation against the Cuban and Venezuelan communities,” said Miguel Saavedra, head of Vigilia Mambisa. “Tomorrow starts a boycott. We are asking for the resignation of Guillen.”

In a rare display of contrition, Guillen later apologized for hurting the Cuban community with his comments.

“I want to apologize for the things (I said) that hurt somebody’s feelings,” Guillen said. “I want them to know I’m against everything … the way (Castro has) treated people the last 60 years. I’ve read a lot about him.”

News of Guillen’s controversial words has been making the rounds on the web today.
