  • Walmart Buys OneRiot

Walmart has acquired OneRiot. OneRiot’s tech team will move to Silicon Valley and become part of the @WalmartLabs team this month.”

If you’re unfamiliar with OneRiot, it was an early entrant into the realtime search space, but inevitably folded that part of its business in favor of a social mobile ad network.

“OneRiot has developed some pretty nifty technology that analyzes social media signals from popular networks like Twitter and Facebook to deliver ads that are relevant to consumers’ interests,” writes Anand Rajaraman on the @WalmartLabs blog. “As our teams debated the finer points of Big Data, Fast Data, and machine learning technologies, it became clear to us that we could find no better colleagues than the guys at OneRiot.”

“Here at @WalmartLabs we’re doing some amazingly interesting and impactful work at the intersection of social, mobile, and retail,” says Rajaraman. “The technology at the core of what we do is the Social Genome, which enables us to connect millions of consumers with the best products based on their interests at any given moment. The OneRiot technology will enrich the Social Genome, and the OneRiot team adds to the already deep expertise we have around social data analysis.”

  • OneRiot Makes Staff Changes to Prepare for the Future

OneRiot says it has made some changes that will "propel the company to the future faster." The changes they’re referring to are that Kimbal Musk, formerly CEO, is now the Chairman of the company, while Tobias Peggs (formerly President in charge of Strategy, Sales, Distribution and Marketing) is now CEO.

Citing, a list of accomplishments that includes the launches of OneRiot itself, its APIs, its ad platform, its Trending Topics Engine, integration with Facebook’s Open Graph, and the fact that its on pace to serve 1 billion ad impressions a month, OneRiot’s Jennifer Hodges says, "As it’s clear to see, OneRiot emerged as the authority on realtime search and is now hurtling along a highway towards monetizing the wider realtime and social web. It’s time to crank that up another gear, and really go for it."

    OneRiot Launches Trending Topics Engine

The changes, unfortunately, also include letting some workers go. "Now, being agile also necessitates making some tough decisions too, if they are the right thing for the company right now," says Hodges. "Unfortunately, today, we have had to let a handful of well respected colleagues go. This is a pragmatic decision based on a strategically focused go-forward plan for the company. It’s in no way a reflection of the talent of the people concerned. One of the folks moving on is Robert Reich, our co-founder. Robert has had immeasurable influence on the OneRiot vision and product – helping us get to where we are today. We’re sure that whatever he turns to next will be equally as visionary, and we wish him well."

OneRiot says Peggs will work closely with Ron Benson (VP Engineering) and Merle Waterman (CFO) to drive the day-to-day business operations. The plan includes the monetization of the realtime web.

  • OneRiot Adds Facebook to Realtime Search API

OneRiot has just announced some additions to its realtime search API. "We are integrating Facebook data into the stream, so Facebook users who publicly share links on their profiles are now influencing the realtime search results available through OneRiot’s API," Meredith Bagnulo with OneRiot tells WebProNews. "In doing this, OneRiot now reflects the pulse of a much broader social web."

"Meanwhile, as you may know, third party developers can monetize their apps via our API by opting in to display our RiotWise ads for the realtime web," she adds. "In this new API release, we’ve also added self-optimizing algorithms to determine which ads will be displayed to third party applications, based on the behavior of their users. This not only increases click-through rates, but also drives better customer engagement."

OneRiot Adds Facebook data to API

According to OneRiot, the API powers over 100 realtime web and mobile applications. Facebook’s huge user base and the data from that will contribute greatly to the usefulness of the API and the apps that utilize it. It will likely also encourage many more apps to utilize the API period.

To date, OneRiot has been indexing data fromTwitter, MySpace and Digg. Facebook is obviously a huge addition.

  • OneRiot Launches Out of Beta, Intros Trending Topics Engine

OneRiot has officially moved out of beta today, and while doing so has also launched a realtime Trending Topics Engine.

"Our trending topics engine detects breaking stories and emerging trends faster than anyone else," OneRiot’s Courtney Walsh tells WebProNews. "And the topics are more detailed: we won’t just tell that iPhone is trending right now, we’ll tell you why."

"This revamp comes exactly one year after launching OneRiot beta in May 2009 – the first consumer-facing realtime web search engine," says Walsh. You can think of our new look as our birthday suit."

    OneRiot Launches Trending Topics Engine

The Trending Topics Engine utilizes OneRiot’s PulseRank technology and realtime index of the social web. "And the topics are more detailed: we won’t just tell that iPhone is trending right now, we’ll tell you why," says OneRiot President Tobias Peggs.

Peggs shares an in depth look at the technology it uses to run its Trending Topics Engine here.

OneRiot views the Trending Topics engine as valuable for content discovery, informing editorial efforts, targeting trending ads, targeting the company’s Trending Ads, and realtime triggers for mainstream search. The company’s search partners are starting to use our Trending Topics Engine to help them better understand when to trigger realtime results at the right time.

  • OneRiot Launches Real-Time Ads Based On Trending Topics

Real-time search engine OneRiot has launched RiotWise Trending Ad Units, which automatically refresh based on what’s trending on the social web.

Previously, OneRiot’s Trending Ads were available only via OneRiot’s API, meaning developers had to create a customized user interface for their ads.

RiotWise Trending Ads link the latest published and relevant content from OneRiot’s network of media partners. OneRiot says the real-time relevance of the ads lead to click through rates at four times industry norms.

    OneRiot-Trending-Ads

"RiotWise Trending Ad Units serve fresh content that’s relevant right now," said Tobias Peggs, GM, OneRiot.

"It’s perfect for social networks, realtime meme trackers and other social sharing services where users are primarily in discovery mode and rabidly consume content related to trending topics. Now those sites have a smart way to monetize with an ad product that makes sense to their users."

Publishers can call the RiotWise Trending Ad Units the same way they would call standard ad units.

Since its launch last December, OneRiot’s Trending Ads have seen exponential growth across Twitter apps, social messaging desktop apps and real-time search engines.

  • Real-Time Search Engine Adds New Features

Real-time search engine Wowd, has introduced a real-time tag cloud and a real-time streaming feature to its search service.

The real-time tag cloud is based on hot topics customized to an individual’s search query. Wowd’s "Hot Topics" tag cloud offers a slice of the most popular topics online, including blogs, news, and the most discussed topics on Twitter.

Users can personalize their own tag cloud by downloading Wowd’s browser application or they can stick with a basic tag cloud based on the most popular pages people are visiting in real-time.

The company’s new SearchStream feature continuously crawls the web looking for new information related to a user’s search query. Results roll in automatically from across the web. SearchStream is also available by downloading Wowd’s browser application.

Other real-time search engines include OneRiot, which was rumored to be in talks with Yahoo last year, CrowdEye and Collecta.

"These features highlight the best aspect of Wowd’s real-time search: fortuitous discovery," said Mark Drummond, CEO, Wowd Inc.

"Wowd doesn’t solely rely on tweets for real-time information. Our results are based on what the majority of people are interested in across the entire Web, at any given moment."

  • With Real-Time Search Comes Real-Time Advertising

Real-time search engine OneRiot announced a new "real-time ad network" today. It’s called RiotWise, and the company says its designed to help developers monetize their apps.

"2009 witnessed an explosion of apps and services catering to users of the realtime web," says Tobias Peggs, GM of OneRiot. "RiotWise is the way to monetize those apps in 2010. Our ads make sense to buyers, make sense to users, and transparently deliver revenue to developers across the realtime web ecosystem."

The following image illustrates how the Riotwise ads work:

    Riotwise

OneRiot says RiotWise proved "extremely effective" at monetizing mobile apps, desktop clients, social search engines, and other applications in the realtime web space in a now completed pilot phase. "RiotWise ads are contextually relevant in realtime, resulting in high Click Through Rates (CTR)," the company says. "Advertisers include a range of publishers such as entertainment sites, sports networks, and news organizations. Dynamically created ads link to quality content from these publishers that is highly related to a users’ realtime search term or a global trending topic."

According to OneRiot, the ads have been performing at 3-4 times industry standard CTR for ads in real-time web apps, and delivering significant revenue to developers.

Developers can customize the display of the ads to fit their particular application. "For example, partners such as Digsby (the wildly popular social messaging client) and ÜberTwitter (the #1 Twitter Client for BlackBerry) are showing ads directly in the realtime stream," explains OneRiot. "Other implementations include more traditional mobile banner placements or the familiar AdSense-style text block."

OneRiot shares advertiser revenue with developers.
