  • Okami For PS3 to Get an HD Remaster w/ Move Support

The rumor that an HD remastered edition for the artistic hit Okami is coming soon has been confirmed. The news broke late yesterday that the game will be ready for purchase in Japan this fall. This lead to speculation that a U.S. version was coming in the near future. This was confirmed by Capcom last night, in the form of a press release. Okami will be lauching in the U.S. as well on Nevember 1.

The Japanese version will be titled Okami Zekke-ban, which roughly translates to “Okami Magnificent Version” according to andriasang. The U.S. verion is simply Okami HD. It is scheduled to be released on November 1, with a price of 3,990 Yen in Japan, $19.99 in the U.S.

Right now they have a trailer for the game, and it looks great. The style of Okami lends itself perfectly to vector graphics, and would have made a HD remaster of this game a relative snap. Which makes one wonder, what took them so long to make it?

Okami was one of the last games released for the Playstation 2 before the PS3 was released. So many people, like me, who just purchased a PS3 and got caught up in the new console, let this game pass them by. As a result, Okami received really poor sales despite receiving high scores from critics and those that played the game. Capcom would have done well to start on an HD remaster at that point and had it ready for release a year or two later.

But they didn’t, and perhaps absence makes the heart grow fonder, because, I for one am still dying to play it and see what the hype was about.

  • Okami HD Announced For PS3, Coming This Fall

I’ve always argued that there was never a better Zelda game than Okami. Clover Studios’ epic will always hold a very special place in my heart. That’s why I’m so excited that Capcom has finally realized the potential of an HD remake.

That’s right, folks, Capcom announced the existence of Okami HD last night on the PlayStation blog. It’s the same game everybody didn’t buy back in 2005 (shame on you), but now better than ever. The most obvious improvement comes from the HD graphics, but the game also comes with Move support and trophies.

For those of you who skipped out on Okami on the PS2 and the Wii, here’s the lowdown: You play as Amaterasu, the Japanese sun goddess that has taken on the form of a white wolf. Players will use various weapons from swords to Buddhist prayer beads alongside the Celestial Brush which is used for all manner of actions from slicing through wood to creating bombs out of thin air.

As for the gameplay itself, it’s the best Zelda game ever made. It follows the open-world exploration coupled with dungeon progression that The Legend of Zelda made popular. It just does it better through the use of smart dungeon design and a huge world that makes the Hyrule from Twilight Princess seem small. It doesn’t hurt that the game has a wicked sense of humor and a fantastic story to drive the game progression.

Okami HD will be out on the PSN as a digital download later this fall for $20. If you didn’t buy it on the PS2 or the Wii, I implore you to pick it up this time around. If you already own the game, you should buy it anyway. Maybe Capcom will actually make a real sequel to Okami with Platinum Games instead of what they did with Okami-den on the DS.
