Natalie Keepers, Charged in 13-Year-Old Nicole Lovell’s Murder, Says Virginia Tech Counselor Ended Her Therapy

Natalie Keepers, one of two Virginia Tech students charged in the murder of 13-year-old Nicole Lovell, says a counselor at her college ended her therapy in December.

A longtime target of bullying, Natalie Keepers thought of suicide in middle school. She cut herself in an attempt to ease her pain. In high school, however, a combination of medication and therapy helped her cope.

When she entered college at Virginia Tech this past fall, Natalie Keepers started seeing a school counselor. In December that counselor told her she no longer needed therapy.

Just two months later, Natalie Keepers and David Eisenhauer–a fellow Virginia Tech student, sat at a fast food restaurant and allegedly plotted the murder of the 13-year-old girl.

This isn’t the first time Virginia Tech’s Cook Counseling Center has come under question. Nine years ago, another Virginia Tech student named Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people on the school’s campus before killing himself. The counseling center was faulted for missing specific warning signs that most deem obvious.

Natalie Keepers’ father, Tim Keepers, addressed the court in recent days, speaking of his daughter’s emotional frailty. He said just the idea of lots of homework could throw her into a panic attack. He added she had never been in trouble, and described her as part of a “pretty close, very strong Christian family.”

Nicole Lovell was a middle school student who endured much bullying–like Natalie Keepers. In addition she had survived cancer and a liver transplant. Authorities say Nicole met David Eisenhauer online and the two began an inappropriate relationship. Eisenhauer allegedly lured the teen out of her home to kill her.

Natalie Keepers admitted she was part of the plot. She helped pick a spot in some woods in North Carolina where she allegedly helped Eisenhauer dump Lovell’s body.

Keepers is charged with accessory before the fact to first-degree murder, accessory after the fact, and concealing a body.

Natalie Keepers initially sought treatment at the Virginia Tech counseling center in August, citing problems adjusting to college life.

Is it possible a counselor might have recognized symptoms in Natalie Keepers had she continued her therapy sessions? Could the murder of Nicole Lovell have been prevented?

It is likely a thorough investigation of the counseling practices at Virginia Tech will take place as a result of this heinous crime.

Nicole Lovell Murder Plotted at Fast-Food Restaurant

Nicole Lovell is the 13-year-old Virginia girl whose body was discovered nearly a week ago about 80 miles away from her home. Virginia Tech students David Eisenhauer and Natalie Keepers have been arrested for her murder. Details of that murder are slowly making their way to the media, with this latest one especially disturbing.

It was while eating at a fast-food restaurant called the Cook Out–located in Blacksburg, Virginia, that Eisenhauer and Keepers allegedly plotted to kill Nicole Lovell and dispose of her body. This detail became known on Thursday as a prosecutor argued against granting bail for Natalie Keepers.

Keepers, a 19-year-old Virginia Tech sophomore, is accused of being an accessory to murder before the fact, concealing a body, and being an accessory to murder after the fact. Eisenhauer, an 18-year-old freshman at Virginia Tech, stands accused of both kidnapping and killing Nicole Lovell.

Fox News reports that Keepers’ motive in the murder was that she was “excited to be part of something secretive and special.” Bail for Natalie Keepers was denied.

David Eisenhauer allegedly told Natalie Keepers he would lure Nicole Lovell from her home, take her to a remote location, and slit her throat with a knife, according to prosecutor Mary Pettitt.

Investigators believe Eisenhauer may have had an inappropriate relationship with the 13-year-old, and that she was threatening to expose it. They think this was the motive for the murder. Keepers allegedly helped Eisenhauer move Nicole Lovell’s body into the trunk of his Lexus, after which the two went to purchase cleaning supplies.

David Eisenhauer hasn’t confessed to killing Nicole Lovell, nor did he lead investigators to her body.

It’s obvious that many details from this horrific case are still under wraps. In the meantime, Nicole Lovell’s family is left with the kind of grief and anguish that will haunt them for the rest of their days.

How shocking is it that these Virginia Tech students plotted her murder over a fast-food meal in such a callous manner?

During a press conference on Tuesday, Nicole Lovell’s mother, Tammy Weeks, read a prepared statement. She explained her daughter often went by the nickname “Coley.”

“Coley had a passion for pandas, music, dancing, dreamed of being on American Idol someday,” Weeks said. “Her favorite color was blue. Nicole was a very lovable person. Nicole touched many people throughout her short life.”

Unable to continue with her statement because she broke down in tears, a nearby man read the remainder of Tammy Weeks’s statement.

“Our hearts still ache in sadness and secret tears still flow,” he read. “What it meant to lose you, no one will ever know.”

There hasn’t yet been any word about the details leading up to Nicole Lovell’s murder. An earlier report indicated David Eisenhauer and Nicole Lovell were ‘acquainted’ prior to her murder, but no specifics have been released.

While it doesn’t sound like Natalie Keepers knew Nicole Lovell, investigators say Lovell and David Eisenhauer were acquainted before she went missing.

The Virginia Tech Police Department issued a statement about the horrific crime.

“The entire Virginia Tech community extends its support to (the girl’s) family and friends,” the statement reads. “The university is also reaching out to our campus community and the greater New River Valley community who may be affected by the events that have occurred over the past several days.”

David Eisenhauer was studying engineering at Virginia Tech and was a member of the cross country team. No word on what Natalie Keepers was studying has emerged.

Both Natalie Keepers and David Eisenhauer will be arraigned in the Montgomery County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Monday, according to Lt. Mike Albert, a spokesman for the Blacksburg Police.
