  • Tetris is Coming to PS4, Xbox One

Tetris is Coming to PS4, Xbox One

Since its debut in 1984, Tetris has become one of the most well-known and iconic franchises in gaming history. Tetris games have appeared on almost every major video game platform in the past three decades. Today The Tetris Company confirmed that the classic game will continue to have a place in gaming’s future.

The Tetris Company has officially announced that a Tetris game will be coming for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. The new Tetris game will be released as a digital download for these next-gen platforms.

What exactly this new Tetris game is hasn’t yet been detailed. However, the game will be published by Ubisoft, the publisher of games such as the Assassin’s Creed series.

“We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans,” said Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft.

As part of the announcement, The Tetris Company pointed out that 2014 will see the 30 anniversary of the classic game. According to the company, Tetris games have sold “hundreds of millions” of copies in 185 countries around the world in that time. Tetris has appeared on more than 50 different platforms an in more than 50 different languages since its debut.

“We welcome Ubisoft to the Tetris family,” said Henk Rogers, managing director of The Tetris Company. “I am 100% sure they will develop one of the best versions of the Tetris game ever.”

  • Fulgore Revealed in ‘Killer Instinct’ Launch Trailer

Despite poor reviews for games such as Ryse: Son of Rome and Lococycle, it seems Xbox One gamers will still be greeted on launch day with some good exclusive games in Forza and Killer Instinct.

Killer Instinct in particular might prove popular, as its free-to-play sales scheme will allow any Xbox One owner to jump in and play the game with one character, Jago. The rest of the characters (of which there will be six at launch) will have to be purchased individually.

Today Microsoft revealed its official launch trailer for Killer Instinct. The trailer features every character so far announced for the game, including Jago, Sabrewulf, Glacius, Thunder, Orchid, and Sadira. Spinal will also be coming to the game, though he won’t be available until January.

In addition to the already-announced characters, the trailer also serves as the big reveal for another fighter to come: Fulgore. The cyborg proved popular in the original Killer Instinct games, and it comes as no surprise that he will be coming as the last of the “first season” of fighters Microsoft will be selling. According to the trailer, Fulgore will be available sometime in March. Fans of Cinder and Riptor will have to wait even longer to play those characters.

  • ‘Fighter Within’ Gets a Punchy Launch Trailer

With only days until the launch of the Xbox One, gamers are now getting their final looks at launch titles for the system. Microsoft earlier today released a brutal launch trailer for Ryse: Son of Rome, and Capcom’s launch trailer for Dead Rising 3 is also heavy on the blood. Now, Ubisoft is previewing its Kinect fighting game, Fighter Within.

Though Microsoft has bundled its new Kinect in with every new Xbox One console, the company hasn’t gone out of its way to promote Kinect gaming experiences. Microsoft’s marketing has primarily portrayed the peripheral as a voice command box and Microsoft Studios’ own Kinect Sports Rivals won’t launch in full until sometime next year (though a trial will be available). So, it has fallen to Ubisoft to promote the Kinect with Just Dance and Fighter Within.

Fighter Within‘s launch trailer reveals nearly the same thing Ubisoft has been showing off since the game was announced at Gamescom. Two players will seemingly be able to fight each other via Kinect by mimicking fighting moves with their bodies. Exactly how well this works has yet to be revealed, but one thing is certainly clear: playing Fighter Within while drunk is could easily to lead to real-life fights.

  • ‘Ryse: Son of Rome’ Launch Trailer is Appropriately Bloody

The launch of the Xbox One is now just days away. Though the road to the console’s release has been more than a little bumpy, Microsoft has fielded an impressive launch lineup filled with a variety of gaming experiences.

One of the most hyped launch games for the Xbox One is Ryse: Son of Rome. Developed by Crytek, the game allows players to take on the role of Marius Titus, a Roman soldier bent on getting revenge for his murdered family. Microsoft today released the launch trailer for Ryse, firmly establishing it as the first-party launch title for gamers who need a bit of ultra-violence.

Like the Dead Rising 3 trailer released earlier today, the Ryse video does not depict much in the way of actual gameplay. It does show, however, plenty of the action and Roman military bravado that have been showcased in previous gameplay videos and even in the live-action mini series that Microsoft produced to promote the game. Also there are plenty of brutal, bloody slow-motion executions – a feature Crytek has been heavily touting for the game.

  • ‘Dead Rising 3’ Launch Trailer Released

While PlayStation 4 owners are already streaming gameplay of games such as Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall, gamers still have a few days to go before the Xbox One and its next-gen exclusives are released.

One of the most anticipated Xbox One launch titles is Dead Rising 3. The game has already gotten moderately good reviews and Capcom is looking to capitalize on Microsoft’s console launch with its zombie franchise.

Last week the publisher released a story trailer for Dead Rising 3 that showed off a fairly standard zombie apocalypse story about people being bitten and the race to find a cure while those still alive begin to turn on each other. Today Capcom has released the official launch trailer for the game.

The new trailer doesn’t opt to show any actual gameplay footage. Instead, the video showcases the intense, bloody situations that were also the focus of the first look players got of the game at E3. Much of the silliness that characterizes the Dead Rising series and sets it apart from other zombie games is also, unfortunately, missing.

  • ‘Dead Rising 3’ Story Trailer Released

‘Dead Rising 3’ Story Trailer Released

There are less than two weeks left before the release of the Xbox One, and Capcom’s Dead Rising 3 looks to be one of the better exclusive launch titles coming for that console.

Capcom has done a pretty nice job of setting up Dead Rising 3 for the next-gen transition. The Dead Rising series has always had its fans, though the games have never been wildly popular. By making Dead Rising 3 a next-gen launch title and an Xbox One exclusive, more gamers than normal might buy the game to have something fun and light-hearted to play.

Speaking of fun, Capcom has also done a pretty good job of promoting Dead Rising 3 as silly and fun, following its relatively dry announcement during Microsoft’s E3 press conference. That’s left little time for the publisher to reveal the game’s story, but today marks the release of the game’s first story trailer.

Based on the video, the story in Dead Rising 3 mostly involves mechanic Mick Ramos trying to escape a zombified city while dealing with panicked non-zombie people and a small injury (that seems to be a bit of a spoiler). The characters and situations certainly look larger-than-life and a bit ridiculous – but that’s to be expected from a Capcom game.

  • ‘Need For Speed Rivals’ Now a PS4 Launch Title

EA today announced that its newest racing game, Need for Speed Rivals, will be a PlayStation 4 launch title in North America.

The game was originally expected to launch on November 22 – the launch day for the Xbox One. The new release date announcement was made over at the PlayStation blog, where EA stated that developer Ghost Games “has been pushing themselves to be a part of PlayStation’s big launch day.”

The current-generation version of Rivals for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC will still hit store shelves and Origin on November 19.

EA also emphasized that Need for Speed Rivals will take advantage of several of the PlayStation 4’s next-gen features. Players will be able to share footage using the DuakShock 4’s Share button and the game will work on the PS Vita through PlayStation 4 Remote Play on day one. Of course, this is assuming that players have downloaded the huge day-one software update for the PlayStation 4, which enables these and many of the other features touted for the console.

Need for Speed Rivals is set to provide players with all the racing and car chases that the series is known for, with some visual updates for next-generation consoles. The game will also feature a silly story about cops being the enemy, though it’s unlikely to be quite as silly as the planned Need for Speed movie.

  • ‘Dead Rising 3’ Season Pass Revealed, Halloween Trailer Released

The release of Microsoft’s new Xbox One console is just weeks away, and with it will come a handful of launch titles for early adopters. One of the most anticipated launch titles is Dead Rising 3, a sequel in Capcom’s zombie horror franchise.

Today, Capcom announced a few details about the DLC season pass for Dead Rising 3. The pass will cost $30 and will be available when the game launches on November 22. That price will guarantee gamers all four of the game’s planned DLC content releases, which will cost $10 each individually.

The first DLC is titled “Operation Broken Eagle” and will be out sometime in “late December,” according to Capcom. The other DLC releases do not yet have release windows, but have been named “Fallen Angel,” Chaos Rising,” and “The Last Agent,” in that order.

In addition to the season pass announcement Capcom has also released a Halloween-themed teaser trailer for Dead Rising 3. In the spirit of Halloween, the trailer features many of the silly costumes that players will be able to don in the game:

  • ‘Titanfall’ is PC, Xbox Exclusive “For the Life of the Title”

Ever since Titanfall was announced at Microsoft’s big E3 conference, the meaning of its exclusive status has been the subject of rumors. Although Microsoft billed the game as an exclusive for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC, many gamers simply assumed that this meant it was a timed exclusive, and that it would be coming to PlayStation consoles six months or a year a year after its release.

These assumptions were formed based on Microsoft’s reluctance to clarify what exactly “exclusive” meant and the nature of game’s publisher, EA. EA is best-known for publishing huge third-party titles that span multiple platforms, such as FIFA and Madden franchises. For EA, known as one of the most aggressive large publishers, to make a title with this much buzz truly exclusive seemed unthinkable.

This week, though, EA announced that Titanfall is definitely exclusive, for good, to Xbox console and PC. During EA’s third quarter investor earnings call this week, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen clarified that,”…it’s exclusive only for the life of the title on Xbox One and Xbox 360 and PC.” Microsoft has jumped on the statement, touting it in a new press release.

Of course, now speculation can begin to surround why Jorgensen found it necessary to include the qualifier “only” in that sentence, or whether “Game of the Year” editions of the game would count as part of the “life of the title.” Titanfall‘s March 11, 2014 release date was recently announced, so gamers will still have months to argue about the game’s status before its launch. In the coming years it should be revealed just how much Microsoft paid EA to keep Titanfall, and whether this amount might have been increased for permanent exclusivity when the Xbox One began running into trouble. Lending credence to the rumor that this full exclusivity is a new development, Vince Xampella, co-founder of Titanfall developer Respawn, has tweeted that his studio only just found out about the deal:

  • New Destiny Trailer Shows Lunar Gameplay

New Destiny Trailer Shows Lunar Gameplay

For the past few months, developer Bungie has been relatively quiet about its upcoming Halo series follow-up, Destiny. The game was announced back in February, just before Sony’s big PlayStation 4 reveal. Since that time, Bungie fans have gotten a few developer diaries, but not much else.

Today, Bungie has released a new trailer that shows all-new gameplay, a new location, and more enemies. It also reveals a bit more about the story behind Destiny.

Titled “The Moon,” the trailer focuses on Earth’s satellite. It implies that the enemies players will be facing in Destiny came from the moon, where they were lying in wait to attack for centuries. The video shows plenty of gameplay in what appears to be a multiplayer dungeon set in a sprawling facility on the moon. The end even teases a massive boss fight against some type of gigantic alien (lunar?) monstrosity.

  • Xbox One Tour Coming to NA and EU

The launch of the Xbox One is less than two months away, and Microsoft knows it has a large perception gap to close against Sony’s PlayStation 4. In order to educate people about its recent Xbox One policy reversals and allow gamers to try out its next-generation console, Microsoft today announced that it will be taking the Xbox One on the road.

The “Xbox One Tour” will begin on October 1 and run until the end of the year, even after the launch of the Xbox One in late November. People in large North American or European cities will be able to play Xbox one games during what Microsoft is calling “experiential events.” The events are free, though limited to people at least 18 years old and attendance is first-come, first-serve.

Games featured during the tour will include Forza 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Crimson Dragon, Max: Curse of the Brotherhood, and LocoCycle.

The first 13 cities on the tour have been announced and include Paris, Philadelphia, Toronto, Chicago, Vienna, Atlanta, Dallas, Berlin, Phoenix, San Francisco, Dublin, Los Angeles, and London. The first “One Tour” event starts on October 3 in Philadelphia. Tour dates leading up to launch day can be found on the “One Tour” website.

In addition to the tour, Microsoft will have “Test Drive” tour busses roaming North America and Europe, hitting college campuses, music festivals, and other locations. The “Test Drive” busses will hit many major cities left out of the tour date announcements.

  • New ‘Evil Within’ Gameplay Video Shows ‘Resident Evil’-Like Atmosphere

When Resident Evil 4 debuted, it changed the survival horror genre for years. Though the game received fantastic reviews, fans of the old-school Resident Evil and Silent Hill games were greeted with a more action-oriented experience and the introduction of numerous quicktime-event cutscenes – traits that would only intensify in further sequels. Though much of the game was creepy, it was missing the sense of dread and helplessness that hung over early survival horror titles.

In recent years, titles such as Amnesia and Outlast have brought atmosphere back to the survival horror genre. However, those games swung in an entirely opposite direction than the newer Resident Evil games, giving players no tools or weapons with which to fight off the horrors that surround them.

Now, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami is back to split the difference with the upcoming The Evil Within. With claustrophobic surroundings, disturbing enemies, and the rare ammo box, Mikami is promising the “perfect blend of horror and action.”

Earlier this week publisher Bethesda streamed live gameplay of The Evil Within from the EuroGamer Expo. Today it released the highlights of that stream in a long 12-minute gameplay video. Without giving much of the story away, the video shows exactly why fans of Resident Evil 4 might be excited about Mikami’s new game:

  • PS4 Game Upgrades Detailed by Sony

For some time now, gamers have known that $10 upgrades are coming for cross-generation console games. Players will be able to buy games on current-gen consoles and switch to next-gen versions later on. Publishers don’t want gamers to have to wait until console launch day to make their Call of Duty: Ghosts or Watch Dogs purchases.

Though individual games (such as Ghosts) have had their plans fleshed-out, the specific details of just how the upgrades will work haven’t been. Sony today ended the confusion and detailed its PlayStation3/PlayStation4 upgrade plans.

Gamers will be able to buy four different games for PlayStation 3 and upgrade them to PlayStation 4: Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Watch Dogs. The games can be bought in either physical or digital versions. For digital versions, games will come with automatic PlayStation Network ID-associated access to the $10 upgrade deal in the PlayStation Store.

Disc-based versions are a bit more complicated. Retail copies of these games will come with a voucher code that will need to be entered in the PlayStation Store, unlocking the $10 next-gen offer. In addition, the PlayStation 3 disc of the games will need to be put into a PlayStation 4 for players to play the next-gen version – even though the next-gen version is a digital download.

At first glance, the PlayStation 3 disc requirement seems a bit unnecessary. However, it’s quite obvious the obtuse system is in place to prevent resales of previous-generation games. For example, someone planning to play Battlefield 4 on a PlayStation 4 could buy a PlayStation 3 version, take the upgrade code, and sell it back immediately. Even selling the PlayStation 3 version back at half it’s value would mean a $20 discount on the next-gen version of the game.

  • ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Next-Gen Upgrade Plans Detailed

On November 5, Call of Duty: Ghosts will hit store shelves in North America – but only for current-generation consoles. The release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will still be weeks away at that point. The last thing Activision wants is for gamers to hold off their purchases for console launch, so the publisher has teamed with console manufacturers to offer $10 upgrades to next-gen versions of Ghosts. Today, Activision revealed how next-gen upgrades will work on each console.

On the PlayStation 4, physical copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts for PlayStation 3 will come with a PlayStation Store code that unlocks a $10 digital download version of Ghosts for the PlayStation 4. Digital PlayStation 3 copies of Ghosts will automatically unlock the $10 PS4 offer.

For Xbox One, Ghosts will be part of Microsoft’s new “Xbox Game Ahead” program. A $70 version of Ghosts will be available as a digital download, and comes with game licenses for both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One version of the game. The licenses are linked through a single Xbox Live gamertag. Gamers who buy the $60 digital download of Ghosts on Xbox 360 will also have the chance to pick up the Xbox One version for $10, similar to Sony’s method.

Activision has also announced that all player stats and unlocks will carry over to next-gen versions of Ghosts. This is accomplished through the “Call of Duty account” system.

Other publishers have announced similar upgrade plans for their fall game lineups. EA will be offering a nearly identical upgrade path for Battlefield 4, and Ubisoft will be offering something similar for Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Retailers such as GameStop, Amazon, and Microsoft Stores also have their own upgrade paths for these games, but it all generally boils down to a $10 upgrade.

  • ‘Infamous: Second Son’ Gets Pre-Order Bonuses

Infamous: Second Son is, so far, one of the most technically impressive PlayStation 4-exclusive games (or next-gen games in general) to be previewed. Developer Sucker Punch have used the upgraded hardware in the next PlayStation to provide some good-looking character models, animations, and tons of particle effects.

Unfortunately, Sucker Punch couldn’t quite get Second Son finished in time to make it a PlayStation 4 launch title. The game is currently scheduled to launch in February, presumably around the time of the PlayStation 4’s launch in Japan. That doesn’t mean the title won’t be promoted by Sony in the meantime.

Sony today announced some pre-order bonuses for Second Son. Players who put their money down early will get exclusive denim vests for main character Delsin Rowe. The vests have been designed by various well-known artists, including iam8bit, Exist 1981, Jos!, and Penny Arcade. The clothing is teased in a new, short Second Son trailer that also teases Delsin’s electricity powers:

  • ‘Watch Dogs’ Mobile Multiplayer Previewed

Despite a exclusive PlayStation 4 and Xbox One offerings from Sony and Microsoft, the cross-gen third-party game Watch Dogs is one of the most-hyped launch titles for upcoming next-gen consoles. The game will combine Grand Theft Auto-style open-city gameplay with a near-future cyberpunk twist.

Publisher Ubisoft has already previewed just about every aspect of Watch Dogs. The “hacking” mechanic that gives the game its uniqueness seems solid, and the Dark Souls-style invasions seem to be a good way to inject some multiplayer interaction without resorting to arena battles. The 14-minute gameplay video released earlier this week demonstrates all of this at length.

Today, Ubisoft previewed one feature of Watch Dogs that, if this year’s E3 was any indication, will be making its way into nearly all next-gen games. A Watch Dogs mobile app will be able to interact with players at home on their consoles. The “ctOS” mobile app allows players to challenge others to a mini-game within their Watch Dogs game world.

Console or PC players who are challenged by mobile players can accept and are then tasked with going to four checkpoint in their in-game Chicago before a time limit runs out. As they make their way to checkpoints, the player on the mobile device will be provided of a simplified overhead view of the city. From there hackable things such as bridges, vehicles, and road blocks can be used to hinder the racing player.

Obviously, this entire scenario is likely to work better on larger mobile devices, such as tablets. According to Ubisoft, the app will also have “progression skills,” encouraging players to continue using the app to gain new abilities.

  • ‘Ryse: Son of Rome’ Combat Video Released

Ever since Ryse: Son of Rome was unveiled as a launch title during Microsoft’s big E3 presentation, impressions of the game have called the game’s fun factor into question. Though the game’s graphics are clearly next-gen and intricate, the numerous quicktime events seen in the game’s early gameplay trailer made it seem easy or on-rails. Subsequent trailers have revealed that the combat has a bit more depth, but an emphasis is still being placed on bloody, instant-execution abilities.

Today Microsoft revealed another look at Ryse, this one focusing on the specifics of the game’s combat. The new video has many of the game’s designers describing combat as “brutal,” “up-close,” and “intense” (the word brutal was used multiple times). The gameplay footage itself still emphasizes insta-kill executions, which each appear to have a Zack Snyder-style slo-mo stutter attached to them. Players will have to damage enemies enough that the executions are available, and the build-up to those executions seems to resemble recent action games such as the Batman: Arkham series.

Regardless of how interesting the combat may or may not be, the animations should be nice. Developer Crytek brought in a Roman weapons expert to consult.

  • ‘Bound by Flame’ Announced For PlayStation 4

Earlier this year Spiders studios released Mars: War Logs to mediocre reviews. The downloadable RPG contained an ambitious mix of cyberpunk and western RPG elements, but was limited by its low budget. Spiders tried to fix the game for consoles with some better voice acting, but the game ultimately did not catch on.

Now, Spiders is trying once again with an RPG titled Bound by Flame. The studio announced the game earlier this month at the Gamescom conference for current-generation consoles, and today announced the game will also be coming to PlayStation 4. Though the game is coming to the Xbox 360, Spiders has not announced the game for Microsoft’s Xbox One.

Bound by Flame puts players in the shoes of “a mercenary possessed by a flame demon.” Gamers will decide to receive power from the demon or resist it, gaining a different type of “heroic” power. Like in Fable and other “moral choice” games, character models will be transformed as players grow more demonic.

In contrast to Mars: War Logs, the Bound by Flame appears to have a more traditional fantasy setting. Spiders is promising “impressive” enemy creatures such as “shadow dragons,” “liches,” and “ice creatures.” The game will be similar to Mars: War Logs in that it will have three skill trees for players to talent into.

Spiders stated that Bound by Flame will be out on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PC some time in “early 2014.”

  • ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Dynamic Multiplayer Map Previewed in New Video

Earlier this month, Activision and Infinity Ward finally revealed the multiplayer gameplay in the upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts. The title will have the yearly team-based shooter action that fans of the series know and love, with a few twists such as leaning, sliding, and dogs.

A month before the gameplay reveal, though, Activision was already announcing multiplayer pre-order bonuses for Ghosts. All pre-orders of the title will come with a downloadable multiplayer map called “Free Fall.” The map is developer Infinity Ward’s take on the dynamically-changing map map concept that EA is heavily touting for Battlefield 4 under the ludicrous banner of “Levolution.”

As described in the new developer preview below, Free Fall will change dramatically from the beginning to the end of a match. Players will square off in a toppled building wedged between two other skyscrapers. The floor of the map is actually made up of the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. At the match goes on, the layout of the map will change, forcing players to adapt.

  • Xbox One Launch Title Pre-Order Bonuses Announced

November is less than three months away, and the smell of the coming console war is in the air. Despite rumors of lowered shipment numbers for the year, hundreds of thousands of gamers in the U.S. and U.K. will have shiny new Xbox One consoles on launch day – and they’re going to need games.

Microsoft and its publishing partners today announced the pre-order bonuses that will come with the Xbox One’s exclusive launch games. Since not everyone will be able to get their hands on an Xbox One immediately, the bonuses are tied to retail pre-order “Day One Edition” copies of the games “while supplies last” and to digital downloads of the titles for two weeks after the console launch.

A pre-ordered Ryse: Son of Rome will come with an exclusive Gladiator Mode co-op map called Ruins. An in-game weapon called the Legionnaire’s Trust sword is also included, and comes with “bonus in-game attributes.” Players who have the Ruins map will be able to invite players who didn’t pre-order into their game on the map.

Forza Motorsport 5 will come with three exclusive vehicles, each with an Xbox One paint job and “custom tuning.” The cars are the 2010 Audi TT RS Coupe, the 2013 Ford Focus ST, and the 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera.

Capcom’s Dead Rising 3 comes with exclusives that should please fans of the Dead Rising series. Players who pre-order the game will get exclusive outfits and weapons from previous Dead Rising protagonists. The Frank West outfit comes with the “Zombie Slugger” (spiked bat) and boots melee damage. The Chuck Greene outfit comes with the double paddle saw weapon and gives vehicle and weapon duability bonuses.

  • New Destiny Details Revealed in Developer Video

Not much has been learned about Destiny, developer Bungie’s upcoming mmo open-world shooter, since its gameplay reveal during Sony’s big E3 presentation. A commentary video for the game’s E3 gameplay demo let slip a few details, but nothing on the scale that gamers are looking for with a game as hyped as Destiny.

Today, Bungie has released a new developer video showcasing the world, classes, weapons, matchmaking options, and loot system in Destiny. Some of the more interesting details in the video include the different skins that weapons can have, the different clothing items players can incorporate into their characters, and the different gameplay options (story missions, public events, raids, etc.) players will have at any given moment.

Of particular interest to Bungie fans may be the varied “supers” that characters can wield. These powers include “Golden Gun” damage buffs, “Fist of Havok” AOE power smashes, and “Nova Bomb” energy blasts:
