  • Last-Minute Travel Deals for New Year’s Eve Available

Last-minute travel deals for New Year’s Eve or after-Christmas visits are available for travelers who are willing to do things a bit differently.

Consumer Reports offers some tried and true tips for those seeking those last-minute travel deals.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday are typically the least expensive days to fly. Flexible travelers typically score the best last-minute travel deals.

The Travel Channel reports that traveling on a holiday–for example, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day–often results in last-minute travel deals of up to 50 percent off the price of flights.

Flying in or out of an alternative airport can often result in big savings on airfare. Again, flexibility is key when scoring last-minute travel deals. If you’re willing to drive a few extra miles to catch that fly, those miles can translate into big savings. Be sure to check multiple airports when looking for flights.

Consumer Reports writes, “Check prices (on flights) at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday; that’s when the greatest number of cheap seats might be available. But bargains can appear at any time, so keep searching and set up alerts that will send you an e-mail or text message when prices on your route drop.”

In a recent survey conducted by Consumer Reports, only 28 percent of travelers haggled with hotels for a lower rate or an upgrade. Of that 28 percent, however, 78 percent scored that upgrade or lower nightly rate. Don’t be afraid to haggle when seeking those last-minute travel deals.

Are you looking for a few days away now that Christmas is over? Where might you fly off to when scoring your last-minute travel deals?

  • Jenny McCarthy, Ryan Seacrest See Nude People on New Year’s Eve

Jenny McCarthy and Ryan Seacrest will once again host Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve tonight from Times Square in the tradition of the late, great Dick Clark. Seacrest will preside over the actual countdown to the ball drop in Times Square, while Jenny McCarthy will chat with people on the ground from all around the packed streets.

Billboard magazine caught up with the pair earlier this week, and asked them what is the strangest sight they’ve ever witnessed on New Year’s Eve. Both immediately agreed it was nude people.

“Usually the naked people,” Jenny McCarthy answered.

“Naked people are always crazy, especially when it’s zero degrees,” Ryan Seacrest added.

“And you know that they’re not drinking, because you can’t really drink out there. So, they’re being nuts sober!” McCarthy said.

“They’re having much more fun in real life,” Seacrest said.

Can you imagine being naked and running around in the freezing cold weather that typically graces New York City on New Year’s Eve? To many, just standing out there in a warm jacket, mittens, and a hat seems insane. Once again this year the temperature is plummeting. Even though the actual temperature reading may be in the 20s, the wind chill is expected to hit the very low teens. That’s cold enough for certain body parts to very quickly become frostbitten if not covered up quickly–just a warning for anyone thinking of running around naked tonight in Times Square.

If you do opt to remove your clothes and take a jaunt through Times Square, at least catch some of the amazing acts that will be on hand. Taylor Swift, Florida Georgia Line, and Idina Menzel will all be performing in New York. If you’re naked in California, it won’t be quite so bad. You’ll get to see One Direction, Iggy Azalea, Meghan Trainor and Charli XCX. And you won’t freeze off any of your body parts.

Will you be checking out Jenny McCarthy and Ryan Seacrest tonight as we bid adieu to 2014?

  • Netflix Will Help You Trick Your Kids into an Early New Year

Netflix Will Help You Trick Your Kids into an Early New Year

Are you a parent who doesn’t feel guilty tricking your kids? Are your kids a little too intelligent for their own good? It’s hard to fake the New Year’s countdown to a kid who has their heart set on staying up till midnight – but Netflix is here to help.

Sure, you can’t convince little Winston that the ball has already dropped – but a bunch of dancing animals can.

To promote its animated series All Hail King Julien – the show featuring characters from Disney’s Madagascar – Netflix has unveiled an “on-demand countdown” for the kiddos. “Have your very own New Year’s Eve with #KingJulien and his very own on-demand countdown for the little party people in your life. Bedtime for the win!” says the streaming company.

The countdown will last about three minutes, and parents can play it for their wired children at any time. Daddy needs a drink, and that just ain’t gonna happen if Winston is up all night.

According to a poll conducted for Netflix, 34 percent of parents already admit to tricking (or at least attempting to trick) their kids into an early NYE bedtime.

  • Eva Green Wows in Teaser for New Penny Dreadful; New Year’s Eve Marathon Ahead

Ever since Eva Green launched into America’s popular culture consciousness as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, she has had a certain appeal.

Now Eva Green plays Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful on Showtime. Similar to her Bond character, Green plays Ives as a feminine force to be reckoned with, a woman who holds her own in 19th-century London’s man’s world.

After a first season on Showtime, Penny Dreadful is set for a second season. The show gets its name from a British colloquialism that is roughly the equivalent of the American term “pulp fiction.” A “penny dreadful” was a horror story printed on cheap pulp paper and available to buy for just a penny.

The late 19th century saw an explosion of horror-type stories, including The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dracula, Frankenstein, and many others. The Showtimes series has its roots in these kinds of stories, blending together characters from these and other stories from the horror genre.

Show creators have spoken about the explosion of these kinds of tales in the late 19th century, pointing out that England was on the cusp of the industrial revolution. The possibility of harnessing lightning (electricity), conquering the skies (flight), and covering great distances in short time (motorized travel) were in the not-distant future. Writers of that period imagined these worlds and wrote about them, much the same way that writers in our own time might conjure up visions of high-tech police work (Minority Report), science bringing dinosaurs back to life (Jurassic Park), or alien encounters (pick a movie). We see these things as more possible than ever, knowing what we do about our own current abilities and technology.

Eva Green is prominently featured in the teaser trailer for the upcoming Penny Dreadful season. Her character speaks of a “curse” that she carries, but that she also has learned that the same curse is in some way a blessing.

Josh Hartnett is Ethan Chandler and Timothy Dalton is Sir Malcolm Murray in the series. They are also seen in the teaser trailer.

The upcoming second season of Penny Dreadful in 2015 has ten episodes. If you did not catch the first season, you can see a marathon of the episodes on New Year’s Eve on Showtime, starting at 8:00 p.m. EST.

  • Natasha Leggero Not Apologizing. Uh Oh, SpaghettiOs?

Natasha Leggero kicked off the New Year fighting a ton of backlash for a joke about Pearl Harbor veterans and SpaghettiOs.

It was a situation of a new controversy developing that managed to overshadow the original controversy in question. On the December 7th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the SpaghettiOs twitter asked that Americans take a moment from their holiday preparations to remember the veterans. The idea of a company whose brand one doesn’t readily associate with one of the most traumatic events in American history tweeting at people about it was bizarre on its face. SpaghettiOs message shared a picture of the brand’s mascot holding an American flag and looking just a little too happy. Needless to say, those who came across the tweet were less than impressed.

    (image)

A few weeks later, the screen capture was shared on “New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly” and Leggero was asked about it.

In the aftermath of the fallout over the comment, it must be said that SpaghettiOs must be thanking its lucky stars for Leggero, who managed to both take the focus off of their questionable tweet and get the brand all sorts of free publicity. As for the embattled funny woman, she is standing firm, and refuses to say sorry.

Via her own website she writes a lengthy explanation for her behavior.

“I wish I could apologize, but do you really want another insincere apology that you know is just an attempt at damage control and not a real admission of guilt? Let me just try instead to be honest.”

In any event, Leggero joins a long line of comedians and one Megyn Kelly in the struggle to make questionable jokes without apologizing for them when they appear to go too far.

She did raise one very interesting point: How is it that many Americans find time to care about a throwaway remark on New Year’s Eve, but not enough time to care about the very real struggle to get American veterans the medical care and financial support they need?

Some will fire back that they are capable of multitasking. To this, Leggero has already responded with a pre-emptive, “Kudos”.

  • UFOs Reportedly Seen On New Years Eve

UFOs Reportedly Seen On New Years Eve

Was someone, or something, else enjoying the fireworks on New Years Eve? That is the question that many California residents are asking themselves, after several mysterious lights were spotted in the sky.

Reports flooded in all over the state of California, after witnesses said they saw strange lights, that had nothing to do with the fireworks, floating in the sky. Many believe the lights were from a UFO.

“I seen like six bright orange colored lights. They were almost like in a diamond or triangle shape. It was weird. And so they started just separating,” said Kaye Pinlac of Stockton.

Terry and Hans Mauth of Auburn say that they watched the lights, which they described as egg-shaped. “There was no sound, that’s the funny thing,” Terry said. “Just this big illuminated form.” One possible explanation was that people had released luminaria light bags. However, Terry dismissed that explanation saying, “It was too huge to be a birthday balloon or something like that. And it moved too quickly.”

Steven Brown of Sacramento says that he saw something similar hovering above Belle Cooledge Park. “Whatever it was moved up and to the left,” he explained. “It hovered there for probably about 60 seconds, then it took off at a high rate of speed.”

Residents are still waiting for an official explanation on what they saw on New Years. Was it, in fact, a UFO, or is there a much more logical and simple explanation?

Do you think the lights were UFOs? Leave your comments below.

  • UFO Sightings in California on New Year’s Eve

According to a number of witnesses, mankind wasn’t the only one on New Year’s Eve enjoying firework shows across the country.

Apparently, civilians in California spotted unusual objects in the sky amidst the entertaining pyrotechnic displays.

Witnesses in Sacramento and Auburn reported UFO sightings around the same time, making the claims a little more plausible to say the least.

Kaye Pinlac, a resident of Stockton, actually recorded the object in action.

“I seen like six bright orange colored lights,” she said. “They were almost like in a diamond or triangle shape. It was weird. And so they started just separating.”

Steve Brown from Sacramento said he saw the alleged UFO amongst the trees in his yard.

“It was bright enough to shine directly through the trees without any problem seeing it,” he told KPLC TV.

Of course this isn’t the first time people have reported their sightings and even then, every day people aren’t the only ones who are intrigued by the mysterious objects that look to be aircrafts from another planet.

In September, the Huffington Post reported a story on a live broadcast done by meteorologist Sean McMullen of KLKN in Lincoln, Neb.

McMullen noticed a twinkling triangle-shaped entity on live video captured by the stations towercam.

His response to it all seemed to be perplexed explanations.

“At times, it seemed to have tethers hanging from it, but I really think that’s just an artifact — I think it’s light being refracted through the dome that covers our lens. I think that’s really just a star, but I haven’t really seen that before,” he said.

One thing is for certain: UFO sightings have been a topic of debate for years. Some believe while others don’t.

Even classified documents have been released revealing CIA’s involvement with UFO activity.

Opposed to popular belief of Tuesday’s sighting, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor confirmed, “there was no unusual flight activity reported Tuesday night.”

Well with that said, hopefully there’s a reasonable explanation for the strange sightings on New Year’s Eve.

  • Miley Cyrus: Our Prayers Saved Her Voice

Miley Cyrus: Our Prayers Saved Her Voice

Miley Cyrus had a wild year in 2013; from her twerking performance at the VMAs to her breakup with fiance Liam Hemsworth, the pop star was in the headlines seemingly every day. It was only fitting, then, that she went out with a bang on New Year’s Eve.

Cyrus performed “Adore You” and “Wrecking Ball” in Times Square before the ball drop, wearing a belly-baring spangly gold outfit under a huge white fur coat, which took three dancers to hold up so it wouldn’t drag the ground. Said dancers were also draped in gold and wore large “2014” headpieces on stage.

The “We Can’t Stop” singer admitted to Ryan Seacrest that she was suffering from a case of nerves at the prospect of performing for so many millions of people, but when she took to Twitter earlier that day she was worried about something else entirely: her voice.

The prayers must have worked, because she later tweeted her thanks:

A break might be in order for the singer; she went strong all year, promoting her hit album “Bangerz” and making appearances all over the country.

  • Michael Jackson’s Daughter Returns Home For NYE

Although Paris Jackson, Michael Jackson’s daughter, did not make it home for Christmas, she was with her family to ring in the new year. Paris returned to her grandmother Katherine Jackson’s home, for the first time since she attempted suicide in June 2013.

Shortly after, Katherine issued a statement, regarding the suicide attempt, and asked for people to respect Paris’ privacy. “Being a sensitive 15 year old is difficult no matter who you are. It is especially difficult when you lose the person closest to you,” the statement read. “Paris is physically fine and is getting appropriate medical attention. Please respect her privacy and the family’s privacy.”

Several days before she was hospitalized, Paris was very active on Twitter, posting disturbing tweets. “I wonder why tears are salty?” she tweeted. An hour later she wrote: “yesterday ,all my troubles seemed so far away now it looks as through they’re here to stay.”

Paris has been living in Utah at a therapeutic boarding school since she left Los Angeles, after receiving treatment. Katherine told Hello! magazine that Paris was “doing much better”, and that her treatment is “going good, really good”.

“She’s my baby,” Katherine continued. “It’s hard for me, really hard. All I wanted these kids to be is happy. The night [Michael Jackson] died Paris was crying and said ‘I want to go and see Daddy, I don’t want to be without him.’”

Hopefully things will continue to improve for Paris, and she will be able to join her family, at home, for good.

  • Miley Cyrus Gave An Awesome New Years Performance

Miley Cyrus has made some pretty interesting headlines this past year, and for good reason; the former Disney star has made it abundantly clear that she’s not an innocent child star any longer, and the results of her wrecking-ball entrance into adulthood captivated news sources during the later half of 2013. Fittingly, Cyrus very publicly left 2013 with a bang and rung in the new year in New York City as one of the starring acts in the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show in Time’s Square. Finding herself among such infamous names as Robin Thicke, Cyrus was not lost to the crowd, and gave a splendid performance that’s sure to have people raving well into the new year.

The artist performed both of her recent hits, “Wrecking Ball” and “Get It Right,” ensuring a multitude of jokes about Miley swinging from the famous Waterford ball. As always, Twitter was an apt means for people to share their jokes with the masses.

Cyrus’ stellar performance wasn’t the only thing that had people talking, however; her clothing choices also left critics raving. Donning a golden, belly-revealing ensemble, Cyrus still managed to stay warm in the below-freezing New York chill with a huge, white, fur coat, which was carried by three back-up dancers so it wouldn’t touch the ground.

  • Robin Thicke Rings in the New Year with Seacrest

Thicke joined everyone from Miami, Florida, where he sang the title piece of his sixth studio album, Blurred Lines.

According to ABC News, Thicke joined Sean “Diddy” Combs and Paula Patton, actress, at Combs’ New Years Eve party at his home in Miami after the performance.

The son of actor Alan Thicke, Robin has been writing music since 1999. On Tuesday it was announced that he had just earned his second No. 1 hit on the Adult R&B Song Chart for 2013 with the single 4 The Rest of My Life.

  • Kaley Cuoco Ties The Knot With Ryan Sweeting

Kaley Cuoco Ties The Knot With Ryan Sweeting

8 Simple Rules and Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco tied the knot to her fiancé Ryan Sweeting at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch, that is located just outside of Los Angeles, on New Year’s Eve.

“From day one, I just knew immediately and it’s been magic. We have all the same family friends. We grew up with the same people, we just never met,” Cuoco explained. “So I kind of feel that I’ve known him my whole life.”

Sweeting proposed to Cuoco back in September after only dating for three months. During an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show, Cuoco and Sweeting had a impromptu fake wedding thrown by DeGeneres herself. “We have this ready. Should you choose — we can do it,” DeGeneres said. “It will save you so much money. You can dance afterward.” The couple played along with the fictitious wedding, and even used DeGeneres’ rings and a veil for props. “Congratulations, @KaleyCuoco and @RyanSweeets. Your wedding was beautiful. And also, legally binding,” DeGeneres tweeted at the time.

“Officially tied the not with my love @KaleyCuoco thanks to @TheEllenShow . Tune in tomorrow to see the ceremony,” tweeted Sweeting. He then added: “Not officially guys take it easy.”

Cuoco and Sweeting’s wedding was completely decorated in her favorite color…pink. This includes her beautiful wedding dress, made by Vera Wang. Cuoco took to Twitter, earlier today, to thank Wang for the dress. “Thank you @VeraWangGang for creating my pink fairy princess gown 🙂 it was a dream come true,” Cuoco tweeted.

  • Dubai Fireworks 2014 Display Breaks World Record

There are many cities in the world that go all out to ring in the new year, but no one does it quite like Dubai.

Complete with a mock sunrise along the seafront, the country beat the world’s record for the largest single fireworks display as 2013 ended and 2014 began, said Guinness World Records.

The display, designed by the U.S. firm Fireworks by Grucci, took 10 months to plan, lasted six minutes and had over 500,000 fireworks.

The scope of the display was truly amazing.

Incorporating some of Dubai’s top landmarks, including Palm Jumeirah, World Islands, the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al ArabIt, the display covered a distance of over 94 km of the city’s seafront and some fireworks reached a height of over one kilometer.

The goal was to beat a record set in 2012 during a display to mark Kuwait’s golden jubilee comprised of 77,282 fireworks.

Dubai managed to break that within the first minute of the display.

Using 100 computers to synchronise the pyrotechnics and a choreographed musical soundtrack, it took more than 200 expert technicians and 5,000 man hours of preparation to ensure the timing was accurate down to the last millisecond.

Before the fireworks were launched, Global President of Guinness World Records Alistair Richards said, “The scale of this record attempt is truly impressive and will ensure all eyes are on Dubai.”

  • Jenny McCarthy Set For ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’

Jenny McCarthy and Ryan Seacrest are getting ready to celebrate New Year’s Eve as part of ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, which will begin at 8 pm. EST. McCarthy and Seacrest recently shared with E! a taste of what viewers can expect to see tonight. “We have Miley Cyrus on the show so in salute to women who do kind of crazy antics, why not be a little crazy this year,” the blonde co-host of The View said. Seacrest was quick to add, “Insanity, craziness. Just give her a camera and a live mic and you definitely want to stick around and watch.”

In an interview with Billboard, Seacrest explained the allure of New Year’s Eve. “In a world where people are on different pages all the time, this is the one moment where you feel like everybody’s on the same page,” he said. McCarthy chimed in, “Unless you’re at home living with cats.”

Though the process flows effortlessly to the appearance of viewers, both hosts gave insight into a hectic and exhausting day, albeit one that is still enjoyable. According to Ryan Seacrest, “Today we’re up to talk to people on television early. Then we’re gonna go up to the top (of One Times Square) where the 77-foot flagpole is to actually make sure that the ball is there. This afternoon we run through the show, where we’re gonna be, where we’re gonna stand, who’s performing where, what stage they’ll be on, the technical aspects of it.”

“It’s a good 15-hour day,” McCarthy said before adding, “but we will get cuddle time in. We’ll spend two hours spooning, warming back up.”

  • Sonia Sotomayor to Lower NYC’s New Year’s Eve Ball

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will have the honor of pushing the button that will lower the Times Square ball in the final countdown to 2014 in New York City on Tuesday.

Sotomayor, who calls the Bronx home, will lead the million plus crowds that flock Times Square to ring in the new year by pushing the crystal button at 11:59 p.m., event organizers announced in a news release.

“Justice Sotomayor is an inspiration to many, and it is a privilege to welcome her to our celebration to ring in 2014,” said Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins in a statement.

“Who better to join us in the Crossroads of the World than one of New York’s own,” he added.

Tompkins said that regular attendee Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who led the celebration last year, will not be present this year, opting instead to celebrate privately with family and friends.

Sotomayor is the first Latina and the third female Supreme Court judge and was appointed in 2009. She is also the first Supreme Court justice to have the honor of pushing the New Year’s Eve ball button on Times Square.

The famous, giant New Year’s Eve ball is lit from within by more than 32,000 lights and is covered in more than 2,600 crystal triangles.

  • Dick Clark to be Celebrated on “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve”

ABC announced today that its yearly New Year’s Rockin’ Eve countdown will this year feature a tribute to Dick Clark, who died in April of this year at age 82.

A two-hour special will air at 8 pm EST before the yearly countdown show begins. Titled New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Celebrates Dick Clark, the show will be hosted by Jenny McCarthy from Times Square, and by Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie in Los Angeles. It will feature American Bandstand clips and other famous Dick Clark moments from the past half-century. The performances will reach back as far as Johnny Cash in 1959, Sonny & Cher in 1965, and The Doors in 1967. Other featured artists include ABBA, Beach Boys, Blondie, James Brown, Neil Diamond, Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Stevie Wonder.

Though Dick Clark rang in the new year on network television for four decades, a stroke in 2004 left him unable to perform his hosting duties as he had in the past. Just days after Dick Clark’s passing in April, ABC announced that Ryan Seacrest will be taking over as the host of the new year’s countdown. The news didn’t go over well on Twitter, though that didn’t deter ABC or Seacrest.

Following the two-hour Dick Clark tribute, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2013 will begin at 10 pm EST and run until around 2 am.

  • JWoww, Snooki To Host MTV’s New Year’s Bash

JWoww, Snooki To Host MTV’s New Year’s Bash

On the one night a year it’s totally acceptable to get toilet-hugging wasted and kiss strangers (hopefully not in that order), it’s only fitting that MTV would tap members of the Jersey Shore crew to host a bangin’ party.

JWoww and Snooki will be co-hosts with Jeff Dye for the annual New Year’s Eve bash thrown by the former music-channel and will be joined by some big-name acts to keep everyone entertained while we wait for the big ball to drop in Times Square, including Ke$ha, Ne-Yo, and Rita Ora.

“New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year where everyone leaves their inhibitions at the door and comes together in a sweaty, drunken, dance-fueled orgy of bliss,” said Ke$ha.

The Jersey Shore stars and best friends will also be celebrating the upcoming premiere of their spinoff show, “Snooki & JWoww”, so let’s hope Snooki’s got a babysitter planned for the wee hours, because she’ll be ready to party.

“I hope they have a leopard bedazzled microphone for this co-host, I’m so excited to ring in 2013 with Jenni and Jeff, so look out Times Square!” she said.

Of course, not everyone is so excited.
