  • Wario Land 2 Lands On 3DS Virtual Console This Week

Besides the excellent Crimson Shroud, Nintendo’s eShop has been devoid of any decent games the past few weeks. This week’s update contains a few notable games, but the real treat is a blast from the past.

Headlining the 3DS eShop update this week is the rerelease of Wario Land 2. The second game in the Wario spin-off series introduces a number of whacky gimmicks that help Mario’s worse-half get through some sticky situations as he takes on Captain Syrup.

Other titles hitting the 3DS eShop this week include escapeVektor, 2 Fast 4 Gnomz, Mario Tennis Open, Pilotwings Resort, Pokemon Rumble Blast, 3G Game Collection, BIT.TRIP SAGA, PIX3D, Riding Stables 3D, Anonymous Notes Chapter 3 – From The Abyss, Cake Ninja: XMAS and Castle Conqueror – Heroes 2.

Continuing its support for New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendo is also releasing two new DLC Coin Rush course packs. The “Mystery Adventures Pack” and “Impossible Pack” are available from the in-game shop.

Unfortunately, all is mostly quiet on the Wii U front this week. The only additions are Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune which are shovelware at best and THQ misappropriating resources at worst. Don’t feel down though as the Rayman Legends demo is still available on the eShop. If you haven’t had the chance to check it out, I highly recommend it.

  • Nintendo 3DS XL Pushes The Company Into The Digital Age

Nintendo continues its fine trend of reworking its portable hardware this week with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS XL. It’s like the original 3DS in every way, but features a 90 percent larger screen. It is also of the perfect size for those of us who had trouble with the original 3DS’ size. More importantly, however, the 3DS XL ushers in a new era for Nintendo.

The Wii and DSi featured downloadable games to an extent. The systems featured the Virtual Console, Wii Ware and other services that allowed players to download older games onto their system. It’s not until today, however, that Nintendo will finally be releasing full retail games via the 3DS eShop.

The game in question is New Super Mario Bros. 2, the next entry in the successful line of 2D mario platformers. Unlike the first two entries, New Super Mario Bros. 2 puts an extraordinary focus on collecting coins. It even tasks players to collect one million coins throughout their adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom. The game also features co-op, but be sure not to make any bets.

Nintendo seems to think that 3DS XL is the perfect compliment to New Super Mario Bros. 2. Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s VP of Sales and Marketing, says, “The larger screens of the new Nintendo 3DS XL really bring all your games to life. The colors and visuals in New Super Mario Bros. 2 look great, especially when all the levels are packed full of gold coins.”

Interested players can buy the game at stores for $39.99, but Nintendo would really like it if you helped them kick off their entry into digital distribution. They are offering double the Nintendo Club coins if you buy the game on the eShop. Digital warriors can either buy a download card at retailers or just buy the game via credit card on the eShop right now. They don’t care as long as you add more gold coins to their coffers.

As for the 3DS XL, the system is going for $199.99. It’s a much better price than the 3DS’ original launch price of $249.99. Nintendo claims to not be selling the 3DS or XL at a loss anymore so the new redesign may help push them back into profitability after a disappointing loss last quarter. Nintendo knows that there’s still room for the dedicated gaming handheld even in a world full of rude people playing Words With Friends on their phone during a movie.

  • Nintendo Kicks Off A Month Of Mario Starting Today

Mario is still probably the most recognizable chap in video games today. There are others like Master Chief, Kratos and Angry Birds, but everybody instantly knows who Mario is. That’s why Nintendo is kicking off The Month of Mario today to celebrate the launch of the newest entry in the series – New Super Mario Bros. 2.

Before we get to the celebration, let’s take a look at the other games hitting the Nintendo Download today. First up is the classic Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. It’s arguably the best of the Super Mario Land games on the Game Boy and it’s Wario’s first starring role.

The other Game Boy classic hitting the virtual console today is Mole Mania. A puzzle game designed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself, Mole Mania puts you in the role of Muddy Mole as he attempts to defeat Jinbe, an evil farmer.

New eShop originals this week include Planet Crashers and Dot Runner: Complete Edition. Planet Crashers is an original action/adventure RPG filled with multiple dungeons to explore. Dot Runner is a Pacman clone of sorts where the goal is to eat all the dots in a dungeon within a certain time limit.

The Game of the Weekend falls to Colors! 3D this time. It’s a painting application for the 3DS that “caters to everyone from serious artists to aimless doodlers.” It’s available on the eShop at a special price of $3.99 for a limited time.

As for The Month Of Mario, starting today a different Mario game will be discounted each week until August 19. This week’s discounted game is the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES. It’s available for the slightly reduced price of $3.99 until August 1. Pick up a little practice on the original before you jump into the coin-obsessed world of New Super Mario Bros. 2.

  • Nintendo Begins Offering Retailer-Specific Pre-Order Exclusives

Nintendo Begins Offering Retailer-Specific Pre-Order Exclusives

Last month it was revealed that New Super Mario Bros 2 will be getting downloadable content (DLC) in the months following its release. Gamers will be able to purchase and download new Coin Rush stages for the game.

This week, Nintendo announced that customers in the U.K. who pre-order New Super Mario Bros 2 through GAME or Gamestation stores will receive a collectible case necklace styled to look like a gold coin from the game. U.S. customers can order the game online (and only online) from GameStop to have a Gold Mario Pin shipped with the game. Note that neither of these bonus items contains any real gold – they are only gold-colored.

Exclusive pre-order bonuses based on what retailer gamers pre-order through has been a growing trend over the past few years. For example, gamers who pre-ordered The Amazing Spider-Man with Amazon received a playable Stan Lee, while those who pre-ordered at GameStop received a Rhino mini-game. Capcom is providing exclusive Mercenary Mode map unlock codes to each of its retail partners for Resident Evil 6 pre-orders, and gamers who pre-ordered Hitman: Absolution from GameStop can even play pre-release game content. Of course, these exclusive DLC offers are as good as telling gamers that there is more content for their game that they cannot access, unless they pre-order several versions of the game.

To Nintendo’s credit, it’s pre-order exclusive is not exclusive game content already on the game disc that gamers have purchased. When the company begins giving away different colored Yoshi’s for each retailer, then we will all know that gaming as we once knew it is gone.

  • New Super Mario Bros 2 is All About the Gold (And DLC)

Nintendo had a lot of new titles to promote during its Nintendo Direct presentation yesterday, but perhaps none are anticipated as much by fans as New Super Mario Bros 2. Nintendo announced some new details on the title during its presentation, and revealed that Nintendo has finally turned a corner and will be charging customers for downloadable content (DLC) for the game.

From what Nintendo has shown of New Super Mario Bros 2, it really emphasizes gold. Gold coins, gold rings, gold blocks, gold enemies, and even a gold Mario. Players will be encouraged to collect coins through a new Coin Rush Mode. The mode selects three random courses for a player to play back-to-back with only one life, and players must rush through the levels collecting as many coins as possible. Coin rush records can be used to challenge friends using StreetPass. The game also has a 2-player local co-op mode, which can be used through the entire game.

New Super Mario Bros 2 will keep track of all coins collected in every mode, totaling them up into one mega-total of coins. Nintendo emphasizes that collecting 1 million total coins is a major goal in the game, insinuating that something special will happen once it is reached.

As for the DLC, it will be collections of new coin rush levels. Nintendo was careful to emphasize that the DLC content was not taken out of the full version of the game to later sell to gamers.

“We’ll be making new downloadable coin rush stages available for purchase, after the game comes out,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and CEO of Nintendo of America. “After our developers finish working on the main game – and make no mistake, out of the box this is a full-featured Mario game, as full featured as we’ve ever made – they’ll turn their attention to making even more stages so that you can keep playing coin rush mode again and again. I can’t say how or when we’ll be releasing these stages, since they haven’t even been made yet.”

Check out the New Super Mario Bros 2 info video below, and start saving up your own real-life “coins” – the game is a launch title for Nintendo’s new 3DS XL.

  • Nintendo To Release New 3DS XL In August

Yesterday, in a Nintendo Direct video, Nintendo announced the release date for the 3DS XL. They did this kind of thing once before when everyone was expecting them to announce a successor to the DS and all they did was release the DS XL. This isn’t a huge surprise for a lot of people seeing as the 3DS just came out last year, but it is fairly interesting that Nintendo felt that the sales were already starting to lag so much that they had to introduce it. Maybe mobile gaming is hurting Nintendo more than we know.

The 3DS XL features an updated form factor and will feature a new system battery life that outperforms that of the original Nintendo 3DS, and it comes bundled with a 4 GB SD card. The screens are each 90% bigger, resulting in a 4.88 inch top screen and a 4.18 inch bottom screen but they will have the same resolution as the 3DS. The only problem I see is that once again they released a handheld without a second stick!!!!

“No other hand-held entertainment experience compares to the fun of Nintendo 3DS,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “With the launch of Nintendo 3DS XL on Aug. 19, consumers will be able to enjoy the great lineup of current and upcoming games on an even grander scale. Plus, Nintendo 3DS XL gives owners even more real estate on their screens to enjoy entertainment applications like Nintendo Video and Netflix.”

The “new” hand-held is due out in North America on August 19th which is the same day that the newest Mario game, New Super Mario Bros 2 comes out. The new system will be available in red or blue and will retail for $199.99 plus tax at any electronics store that carries Nintendo products.
