  • Teyana Taylor To Dethrone Rihanna? Meet The NEW ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’

    “Who is Teyana Taylor?”

It’s a question you’ve either asked in recent weeks or perhaps have heard others around you wonder aloud.

It’s okay to ask as Taylor isn’t someone that too many people would be familiar with—even fans of black R&B and hip hop artists.

But it’s highly likely you’ve seen Teyana before…you just don’t remember her.

Think back to the days of MTV’s cringe-worthy “My Sweet Sixteen”, a show dedicated to annoying us with spoiled teenage brats.

Teyana Taylor was one of the girls featured in this series. Taylor’s mission at the time was to have an amazing sweet sixteen birthday party that would impress all of her friends.

Years later and Taylor’s ambitions are far more grown-up. Now the aspiring singer is anticipating the release of VII, an album that celebrates her arrival after several frustrating years of working in the music industry.

“Seven is the number of completion,” Teyana said during her interview with Rolling Out Magazine.

“I feel like I’ve been in the business for seven years and [there have been] a lot of bumpy roads and detours. [B]ut now in the seventh year everything is finally completed and coming together.”

Teyana Taylor has enjoyed an increasing level of hype thanks to new music she’s shared in recent weeks.

She released the full music video for her single “Maybe”, and there has been much buzz after she dropped a sizzling teaser for “Brokenhearted Girl”:

After years of questioning, self-doubt, and dealing with haters, it seems that Teyana Taylor will finally get to share her beautiful voice with the world.

Could that spell trouble for divas already on the scene? Some noted that Teyana Taylor’s Rolling Out spread was sexy in the same vein as popular artist Rihanna.

However, it could be that the new girl on the block has a bit more talent to keep listeners tuned in.

Will Teyana Taylor dethrone pop music’s “good girl gone bad”?

  • Willow Smith Back For “Your Love”. Does New Song Impress?

After listening to “Your Love”, it’s hard to believe Willow Smith could have done such a musical about-face in such a short window of time.

There’s nothing in this latest effort that conjures images of Willow whipping her hair back and forth.

Instead, we get a dreamy alternative pop song featuring Smith cooing about loving someone.

Even though Willow’s new song mentions snowfall, it’s very easy to get an image of black and white beach scenery.

    The vibe is deceptively laid-back.

Even though the melody is mellow, the lyrics speak of longing for someone that she hardly sees.

“My emotions change like the weather, and I’m sad.”

Perhaps Smith is talking about the changeability of teen love. One minute she is filled with joy and bliss (laughter features throughout the track) and yet this quickly becomes lost with the sense that she is missing someone, and the sadness that comes with their absence.

This is certainly a mature topic for a 13-year-old, but Willow Smith pulls it off nicely.

For one thing the tune is very light and playful, not trying to grasp a hold of some emotional depth that she’s far too young to express convincingly.

It’s a song that doesn’t demand too much of the teenager vocally. Smith is able to “la la la” her way through it largely on key and hold the final note.

Overall, I’d say that this is a solid effort from Willow Smith. She seems to be working hard to evade Rihanna comparisons while carving out a niche for herself in the indie pop market.

Now comes the question of what Willow’s music video will look like. Will it be upbeat like the melody or a more solemn representation of the lyrics?

Have you heard Willow Smith’s new single? What did you think?

  • ‘Babymetal’ Brings New Music Craze to the USA

The phrase “Babymetal” has been popping up around the Internet lately, and if you’re confused on what it means, you’re not alone. The newest music sensation to hit the states comes in the form of three tiny Japanese girls who go by the name “Babymetal.” Their names are Su-Metal, Yuimetal, and Moametal, who sing, scream and dance on stage to heavy yet bouncy beat, with plenty of theatrics to boot.

Though Babymetal formed in 2010 (as an off-shoot to Japanese pop group Sakura Gakuin), the trio performed their first US show this July to a sold out crowd, then supported Lady Gaga on a string of her North American tour dates.

“I didn’t even know what metal was all about before this,” says Su-Metal, 16. “When they told me I’d be doing BABYMETAL, I listened to [metal] and its heavy drums. I thought it was interesting and I imagined the choreography I would do.”

Many critics think this new emergence is “contrived” and “gimmicky.” Perhaps, although NPR is quick to point out that many metal acts thrive on gimmicky, contrived acts:

Metal is as much about contrivance as it is about substance, and often its best bands have been able to skillfully combine the two. What makes metal so uniquely charming is that the bands and their audiences buy into those contrivances and gimmicks fully, without irony.

Babymetal’s self-titled debut was released just this February, and quickly went to the #1 spot on iTunes Metal chart in the US, UK, and Canada. Babymetal is the youngest Japanese group to break into Billboard’s 200 chart. Listen to Babymetal for yourself and see if you’re on board with the newest music craze:

  • Alicia Keys Coming With New Album

Alicia Keys Coming With New Album

After two years of keeping her fans waiting, Alicia Keys is swinging back with a new studio album.

“With this album, I find I have much more I want to talk about. This album is more about the concept, the thought I’m trying to get across, where in the past it’s been more about the melody. This time it’s more about what we’re going through as human being,” Keys told Women’s Wear Daily.

Alicia Keys says the material on her new album will have something that everyone can relate to, but it particularly carries themes of independence and breaking expectations that others have of us. As a mother, these themes are closer to her heart than ever.

“We all experience similar things. I find that the world puts us in these boxes where we’re only allowed to be one way — like, ‘to succeed as a career woman, you need to do it this way,’ or ‘to be a gay man, you have to be this way.’ First of all, we’re so much more complex than that. It’s about breaking down those boundaries. The songs concentrate on concepts like that. As human beings, we like to identify with something, and as for me, I love people with a strong point of view,” she explained.

Keys herself puts her money where her mouth is when it comes to seeing people for more than others would expect. She is the co-Founder of Keep a Child Alive, a group that provides medicine to children and families in Africa with HIV and AIDS.

She also has developed her own sneaker line with Reebok.

The songwriting process is something Alicia Keys is fascinated by. Sometimes things start one way but end up someplace entirely differently than you expected.

“You come into it with a thought, with an idea, with a melody,” she said. “But you don’t know what you’re going to get, which is the mystery of it. That’s how it becomes something.”

Keys’ new album is as yet untitled and is slated for a 2015 release.

  • Phil Collins Collaborating With Adele On New Music

World-renowned, singer-songwriter Phil Collins is a well-accomplished legend is his own right. The 62-year old icon has sold an estimated 150 million records worldwide.

He’s also won numerous awards throughout his career, including seven Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards, an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards.

With such a long list of accolades, it comes as no surprise that Grammy award-winning singer Adele contacted the former Genesis leader.

A number of media outlets have reported talks of the two collaborating for the singer’s upcoming third studio album, but the claims were only speculative. However, Collins has confirmed that the news is true.

According to Spin Magazine, in an interview with Inside South Florida, Collins shed light on his song-writing collaboration with the 25-year-old soul singer.

“I’ve just started to work with Adele. She contacted me to write together,” he said, according to MTV before going on. “I wasn’t actuality too aware [of her]. I live in a cave [but] she’s achieved an incredible amount and I really love her voice and I love some of that stuff she’s done. So, to me, it’s always an eye-opener [to work with new people]. Educational.”

Although Collins announced his retirement from music in 2011 to direct his focus toward family, he clarified in 2013 that he would still be writing songs. He even revealed that he was considering a full return to the music industry.

According to MTV News UK, earlier this week claims began circulating about a new song attributed to Adele. The song titled “Devil On My Shoulder” was registered with ASCAP some time last month. No further details regarding the song or the new album, have been released. However, in addition to working on her new album, there has also been reports of Adele planning a tour for 2015.

A source close to the “Rolling In The Deep” singer informed The Mirror that the tour is currently in the preliminary stages of planning.

“At the moment the discussions are all about a 2015 tour of the UK and North America at least, possibly a world tour,” the source said. “She has managed to spend a lot of the past two years focusing on being a mother, and wants to continue to do that while releasing and promoting new material.”

  • Stevie Wonder Set to Release 2 New Albums in 2014

Unlike most legendary artists, a greatest hits compilation won’t be the only thing you’ll have to listen by Stevie Wonder. In an interview on Tuesday, the soul legend confirmed that he plans to release not one, but two new albums next year.

His plans include a collaboration project with legendary, 16-time Grammy award winning producer David Foster. He also plans to release a solo project.

According to CBS, the collaboration project entitled, “When the World Began”, and the solo album, “Ten Billion Hearts,” will include newly written songs by the 63-year-old performer.

    (image) (image)

Wonder briefly gave insight on what listeners can expect from the lyrical standpoint of the new album. His separation and current divorce proceedings with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Kia Mallard, are the main inspirations behind the majority of his new lyrics. The circumstances that led to the lyrics include, ‘children, family, change, growth, heartbreaks,” he said.

He even stated that he’s implementing hip-hop as a form of inspiration to address political messages. “I listen a lot to rap, and I’m inspired to take it, to use it in another way, to get the message across.”

Wonder is also working on a third album in an effort to fulfill a long-standing promise to his mother, songwriter Lula Mae Hardaway. He promised her he’d one day record a gospel album. Now, he plans to make good on that promise, commemorating her legacy. “I might sing a gospel song in Arabic or do something in Hebrew. I want to mix it up and do it differently than one might imagine. Obviously the good word at the end of the day, it’s not about the religion, it’s about the relationship. And I think we all need to check our relationship.”
