  • Paul McCartney to Receive NME Award

Paul McCartney is set to receive NME’s special Songwriter’s Songwriter award later in February. It is expected that the former Beatle will be on hand to accept his award in person. McCartney, whose hit single Queenie has put him back on the music charts at the age of 71, is seen performing the track in the music video above.

The Beatles’ co-frontman–he held the stage alongside the late John Lennon–launched the 5th decade of his music career with the release of his new album New in 2013. Now he is being honored for his own songwriting. He and John Lennon co-wrote hundreds of songs during their time together.

The 2014 NME Awards will take place on February 26 at Brixton’s O2 Academy, where Paul McCartney will accept the coveted gong after being chosen by the world’s leading songwriters who voted him the “best practitioner of their craft.” Is there possibly anyone who could top Paul McCartney?

NME’s editor Mike Williams said the following about McCartney.

“We’ve spoken to the biggest and best musicians around, and they’ve told us: Paul McCartney is the world’s ultimate songwriter. Paul’s enduring and stunning talent is worth celebrating, and I’m incredibly honoured that NME are giving him the special, one-of-its-kind Songwriter’s Songwriter award to recognise that,” he said. “I’m equally thrilled for us to be singling out Belle & Sebastian at this year’s ceremony, an act who have always had a special place in our readers’ hearts and minds. And of course, to have Huw Stephens – a man who’s probably the most respected young DJ around, as well as a friend to practically every band in the room – presenting on the night is a dream come true too.”

Belle & Sebastian are a Glasgow based band who will receive the Teenage Cancer Trust Oustanding Contribution to Music Award at the NME Awards.

Who would have thought when they saw Paul McCartney take the stage on The Ed Sullivan Show back in 1964 that the fresh faced mop top boy beside John Lennon would still be making music–and being honored for his craft–in his 70s? He is certainly well deserving of the accolades.

  • Katy Perry And John Mayer’s Sexy Cover Photo

Katy Perry and her boyfriend John Mayer posed together for a sensual black-and-white which will serve as the cover art for their collaboration “Who You Love,” which will be on the song list of Mayer’s album entitled Paradise Valley.

The photo depicts a more demure John Mayer looking downward (probably to conceal his always-red eyes) and sitting below Perry with his fingers on the guitar strings. Perry’s arm is possessively but gracefully placed on his shoulder as she lies on a couch draped in a dark, velvet gown.

Hopefully all of the attempted sincerity and successful sex appeal of the photo shoot is good enough to make you wonder what it’s all for, and what the song “Who You Love” is all about.  With all this promo, the song had better be worth the listener’s while.

According to E! News, Mayer described the song as this:

“Who You Love” is a sweet melody that tells the story of opening up your heart and allowing yourself to fully love the person in your life—or specifically to ‘love who you love, who you love’”… whatever in the world of tangled-up metaphors that is supposed to mean.

But you shouldn’t expect much clarity from either of the two songbirds who have heart badges stitched all over their sleeves. Mayer continued to express his excitement about the song in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel:

“It was a really great experience and the song is one of these like old FM ‘70s and ‘80s sort of like duets. And I listened back to it; it’s, like, really convincing. And I watched it get made and I am still taken aback.”

So, um, basically all curious fans will just have to listen to the song in order to decipher the deep, heart-felt emotions that these love-struck crooners have poured into their music. If you need to ease your musical curiosity as well as any confusion that John Mayer has caused you, take a listen to “Who You Love” below.

  • Paul McCartney Performs For The Kids & Celebrates Anniversary

Paul McCartney sure knows what a woman wants on her second wedding anniversary.

The legendary musician performed some new material from his aptly named upcoming album, “New,” at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens on Wednesday. It also happened to be McCartney’s second wedding anniversary with wife Nancy Shevell.

The 400 teenagers in attendance were quite surprised to get a concert from the ex-Beatle during class time.

McCartney is making the rounds to promote his new album, “New,” set to be released Tuesday, October 15. This event with iHeartRadio had McCartney performing 13 songs. The set found McCartney performing songs from the Beatles, Wings, and his solo career. To name a few, McCartney sang “Hey Jude,” “Eight Days a Week,” “Jet,” “We Can Work It Out,” “Back In the U.S.S.R.” and “New.”

“New,” which is from the upcoming album, is a song inspired by his wife Shevell. Before performing the number, McCartney looked at his lovely lady and said, “Happy anniversary, Baby.”

McCartney retweeted Tony Bennett, the founder of the school.

Bennett further explained why McCartney performed at the school.

Not only did McCartney perform for the students, but he also answered some of their questions. During the Q&A, he gave some insight into what he’s learned over his years as a performer. Said McCartney, “When we first started out, I was terrified of doing anything wrong onstage. I got to learn, though, that people don’t mind. In fact, they kind of like it. People go, ‘I was at the show where he made a mistake!’ ”

Before leaving the students, he gave them some words of wisdom, “You rock on. You be great.”

  • Glomper App Launches Today at SXSW

Glomper App Launches Today at SXSW

Glomper Event is a new app that allows users to get pertinent details about an event, with photos, conversations, comments, and interactions while on the go. It launched today at SXSW to give festival attendees a better glimpse of its capabilities with a pre-populated list of all the SXSW events.

The Glomper interface looks a lot like Pinterest, with streaming photos from events aligning down the center of the page. The user can click on an event to see the full details, including pictures, people who are attending and comments. When you click to view an event, it sort of looks like a Facebook home page for parties instead of people. Glomper even includes a feature where you can “heart” something by clicking an outline of a heart which fills in when you “like”, um, “heart” something.

The free app version is now available for iPhone or Android phones, and lists all of the parties and activities going on at SXSW. Event attendees can keep track of where all there friends are and share photos of what they’re doing.

    Glomper features

    • See full stream of one event – pictures, comments, tags, and conversation happening there
    • Offline mode
    • Interactive map so people can see where their friends are hanging out.
    • Uses Facebook Connect, allowing anyone to share pictures and posts.

Here is what Glomper CEO, Alexander Borodich said about the launch and the hopes he has for Glomper:

“Social media plays a huge role in our online and offline social lives – that’s how we hear about events, conferences, meet-ups; decide which clubs, restaurants, bars are the best; what parties are going on, if it’s rocking or if it’s a dud – and for the busy social butterfly, there’s currently no way to track it all in one place – instead we’re forced to scour our social networks for information and piece it all together ourselves. Glomper Events is the perfect mobile app for everyone with an active social life, who likes to explore new places, and meet new people – we want to bring the engagement of social media to their offline world, and what better place to launch than at SXSW.”

  • Foursquare, The Next Social Up-And-Comer

    Foursquare, The Next Social Up-And-Comer

It’s funny how early adoption works and how you start to see recurring patterns. When I started using Twitter there were numerous people who questioned what it was, why it was useful, and mocked it. A couple of years later, Twitter is still on a tear.

I’m seeing the same thing with Foursquare today. Early adopters are using it, it’s starting to spread, and once again people I know are confused by it, think it’s useless, and that it has no real business.

However, in some ways it may even have a brighter future than Twitter based on creating the location to local business connection. They’ve started to roll out some very interesting partnerships which I assume have revenue implications. If they don’t now, they will in the future as Foursquare’s user base takes off.

Check out this quote for example:

“Being able to drive foot traffic into our restaurant partners and our retail partners is a huge opportunity, because that’s where our product is sold,” said B. Bonin Bough, director of social and emerging media for PepsiCo.

There are going to be some very interesting things that can be done with this, and it’s going to drive Yelp, Facebook, Yahoo!, Google, and others after checking in and driving local traffic to businesses.

I had my first real example of this when I checked into my hotel for Ad Tech San Francisco, and Foursquare alerted me that I could get half off appetizers in the hotel bar. I had already settled in my room, but it made me think about actually taking advantage of the deal which would have driven more revenue to the hotel. That is worth something to the hotel, something worth paying Foursquare to drive to them. Foursquare also doesn’t appear to be waiting until they’re huge to make this happen, which seems like a wise move to get established as the early player working with businesses.
