  • This Is What Need For Speed: Rivals Looks Like On The Xbox One

Resolutiongate – that’s the term given to the current controversy regarding Call of Duty: Ghosts being rendered at 720p on the Xbox One and 1080p on the PS4. Despite the fact that both versions look nearly identical, this is apparently a big deal to those who have nothing better to do with their time than just yell at strangers on the Internet all day. Well, you better strap yourselves in because EA may have just started another comparisons race.

EA decided to share gameplay of Need for Speed: Rivals running on both the Xbox One and PS4 today. While we should be excited to see the latest Need for Speed title running on the Xbox One for the first time, it will inevitably turn into a petty argument over which version looks better. So let’s just get it over with, shall we?

Here’s Need for Speed: Rivals looks like on the Xbox One:

Wow, that’s a fine looking racing game. I’m sure those picking up on the game on November 22 for their brand new Xbox One will be very happy with the title.

Now, let’s take a look at some new footage released today of the PS4 version:

Would you look at that – they’re nearly identical.

Now I know that some of you will immediately start to compare the videos side-by-side looking for anything that sets the two apart. Considering that this is compressed flash video of a game normally rendered at 1080p on a large screen, you’re wasting your time. Just wait until Digital Foundry comes out with their head-to-head comparisons before you start covering the Internet with your self-righteous corporate loyalty.

So please, just drop “resolutiongate.” It’s a dumb name anyway.

  • ‘Need For Speed Rivals’ Now a PS4 Launch Title

EA today announced that its newest racing game, Need for Speed Rivals, will be a PlayStation 4 launch title in North America.

The game was originally expected to launch on November 22 – the launch day for the Xbox One. The new release date announcement was made over at the PlayStation blog, where EA stated that developer Ghost Games “has been pushing themselves to be a part of PlayStation’s big launch day.”

The current-generation version of Rivals for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC will still hit store shelves and Origin on November 19.

EA also emphasized that Need for Speed Rivals will take advantage of several of the PlayStation 4’s next-gen features. Players will be able to share footage using the DuakShock 4’s Share button and the game will work on the PS Vita through PlayStation 4 Remote Play on day one. Of course, this is assuming that players have downloaded the huge day-one software update for the PlayStation 4, which enables these and many of the other features touted for the console.

Need for Speed Rivals is set to provide players with all the racing and car chases that the series is known for, with some visual updates for next-generation consoles. The game will also feature a silly story about cops being the enemy, though it’s unlikely to be quite as silly as the planned Need for Speed movie.

  • Need For Speed Rivals Will Apparently Have A Silly Story

Do racing games need a story? Need For Speed: The Run proved that story modes in racing games are actually kind of lame. All you need is some fast cars and great track design to make a great racing game. Need for Speed Rivals looked like it would be ditching the kind of stories that result in stuff like the Need for Speed movie, but the latest trailer for the title leaves one skeptical.

In a new Need for Speed Rivals trailer released today, the narrator lays it on thick as we’re introduced to a world where the police are under investigation for using excessive force to bring down street racers. The police aren’t going to let these racers embarrass them, however, and are now pursuing them with extreme prejudice. The trailer than ends with a melodramatic one-liner about how the cops were once rivals, but now they’re enemies.

It’s really silly set up, but we can only hope that it doesn’t get in the way of the game. After all, racing games never benefit from a story mode. All we need to know is that there are cops and racers, and that these two sects of cars will occasionally butt heads.

In the end, we can only hope that we end up with a game that’s like a cross between Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Anything else, and things might get messy.

Need for Speed Rivals will launch November 19 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The PS4 and Xbox One versions will launch three days later on November 22.

  • Need For Speed Rivals Wants To Reinvent Multiplayer With AllDrive

Ever since Burnout Paradise, Criterion and EA have been experimenting with the idea of seamlessly integrating multiplayer into racing games. There was still a disconnect, however, as players would have to open a small menu to find a multiplayer game. With the latest Need for Speed title, that menu has been replaced by something much more ambitious.

EA revealed today that Need for Speed Rivals will feature a new multiplayer matchmaking system called AllDrive. No longer will you have to stop, open up a menu and search for a multiplayer match. With AllDrive turned on, every race has the potential to become a multiplayer session. The feature has been worked into every event so everything from head-to-head races to pursuit events can end up with players facing off against other real players from all over the world.

So, what about those who just really hate people and would prefer to play the traditional single player campaign alone? According to Polygon, there will be an option to turn AllDrive completely off and just race against AI opponents for the entirety of the game. If you want to be a bit more open, you can also set AllDrive to only match you up against those on your friends list.

Need for Speed Rivals will be available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC on November 22.

  • Check Out Some New Need For Speed Rivals Gameplay

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from EA regarding its annual racing game franchise – Need for Speed Rivals. With it being the first game in the series to grace next-gen consoles, you’d think EA would be a little more aggressive with its marketing. Instead, the publisher has only revealed the first trailer for the sure to be awful live action movie based on the franchise.

That all ends today though with the release of a new trailer for Need for Speed Rivals that shows our first real look at some next-gen racing footage. The first thing you’ll notice is that it looks really good. Racing games are always some of the best looking games on any platform, but Need for Speed Rivals looks exceptionally beautiful. It doesn’t hurt that the environments, including the snowy mountains, look more lifelike than ever before thanks to the game’s use of Frostbite 3.

As for the gameplay, it looks like tried and true Need for Speed gameplay. Players will either take on the role of a racer trying to escape from cops, or the cop trying to take down racers. In this particular trailer, you will get to see the tools cops can use to take down opposing racers, including spike strips and EMPs.

If you were expecting something different out of EA with its Need for Speed franchise, you’re probably not going to get it this time around. It does, however, look like the developers at Ghost Games and Criterion are adding some kind of story mode into the title. Whether it ends up being as insipid as past story-based Need for Speed titles remains to be seen though.

Need for Speed Rivals will launch November 19 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It will launch on November 15 for the PS4 and November 22 for the Xbox One.

  • Need For Speed: Rivals Brings Playable Cops To The Party

When Need For Speed: Rivals launches, it will be another step with EA commitment to crossing over the single and multiplayer experiences with their AllDrive feature that promises “seamless” integration between the two styles of gameplay. Whatever your opinion on a game that essentially forces you to play multiplayer, there is reason for excitement concerning the next Need For Speed release: the opportunity to play an undercover cop who can pursue racing punks to your heart’s content. To help celebrate their appearance at Gamescom 2013, a trailer was released focusing on the law enforcement side of the street racing life.

It should be noted that there’s not much gameplay to see. Instead, a cinematic trailer that supposed to tweak your imagination was the offering:

According to reports, players will be able to choose from three different kinds of playing styles if they choose the law enforcement side, including patrol officers, enforcers, and undercover cops. The trailer focuses on the undercover aspect, and it looks like players will be able to drive exotic cars allowing them to perhaps enter, and then disrupt races as they try to catch drivers who have no respect for traffic laws. The game is schedule to launch on November 19, and it will be available for all both console generations (PS3 and 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One) as well as the PC environment. There is, of course, a pre-order bonus if you are so inclined.

    This includes the following:

  • Exclusive access to the Nissan GT-R Black Edition
  • Early access to advanced pursuit technology
  • A custom livery
  • Is the Nissan a good enough reason to get in early?

  • Need For Speed: Rivals Is EA’s Next-Gen Racing Game

Both Sony and Microsoft will be launching their next-gen consoles with a racing game. EA will be joining them with its own racing franchise later this year.

EA announced today that it’s new studio – Ghost Games – is knee-deep in development on the next Need for Speed title. The game – titled Need for Speed: Rivals – will be the first next-gen entry for the series. The game is also coming to current gen systems and the PC. Like other games from EA this year, there was no Wii U version announced.

The above trailer indicates that the footage is all in-game. It’s also revealed that Criterion is helping out with development. With their racing game expertise, Rivals may just be the prettiest, and best playing, racing game this year.

Need for Speed: Rivals will launch on November 19 for all current-gen consoles and PC. It will presumably be a launch title for the PS4 and Xbox One.
