  • YouTube Is Ending Overlay Ads

    YouTube Is Ending Overlay Ads

YouTube is ending its overlay ad format, with April 6th slated as its termination date.

The company made the announcement in a blog post:

Starting on April 6th, 2023, the “Overlay ads” ad format will no longer appear on YouTube to help improve the viewer experience and shift engagement to higher performing ad formats on desktop and mobile devices. Overlay ads are a legacy ad format that only served on desktop and are disruptive for viewers. We expect to see limited impact for most Creators as engagement shifts to other ad formats.

As the company highlights, this particular ad format only appeared on the desktop, so the overall impact should be relatively minor.

YouTube recently had a CEO changeover, with long-time CEO Susan Wojcicki resigning to focus on “family, health, and personal projects” she is passionate about. Neal Mohan, YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, is taking over as the company’s new CEO.

While there’s nothing to suggest that the change of CEO is behind the ad format decision, it wouldn’t necessarily be surprising. It’s not uncommon for companies to make changes under new leadership, and it could be that trimming an under-used format is Mohan’s first move.

YouTube Unveils Super Thanks So Fans Can Support Favorite Channels

YouTube has unveiled a new feature, Super Thanks, as a way for fans to support their favorite channels and content creators.

Like other social media platforms, YouTube is looking for ways to keep content creators happy and loyal to the platform. Its latest endeavor is Super Thanks, a new way for fans to support creators.

“For creators, building a business isn’t a one-size-fit-all approach,” writes Neal Mohan, Chief Product Officer. “Some may gravitate towards tools like channel memberships while others may double down on Super Chat. At YouTube, we’re always looking for fresh ways creators can diversify their revenue streams. That’s why I’m excited to unveil our fourth Paid Digital Good — Super Thanks. This new feature gives creators yet another way to earn money while also allowing them to strengthen relationships with viewers.”

The feature appears to already be gaining fans, with some streamers seeing the feature accounting for nearly 15% of their revenue.

The feature is currently in beta but, with today’s announcement, is now available to thousands of creators.

  • YouTube TV Bringing 4K Video, Unlimited Streams, Offline Viewing

YouTube TV Bringing 4K Video, Unlimited Streams, Offline Viewing

YouTube TV is adding some big new features, including 4K video, unlimited concurrent streams and offline viewing.

YouTube TV is one of the premier TV streaming services. The service is often compared with Hulu + Live TV, with the two duking it out for the top spot. One of YouTube TV’s biggest advantages is the power of Google behind it. As a result, the service has features, such as unlimited DVR space, that other services struggle to compete with.

The service is preparing to add additional features that will widen the gap even more.

“After just a few years, YouTube TV now has more than 3 million paid subscribers, 85+ networks, and offers unlimited DVR,” writes Neal Mohan, Chief Product Officer, YouTube. “Sports fans can even enjoy their favorite games with the ability to view key plays, hide spoilers, and check out real-time stats. And there’s more to come, including a new add-on option that lets viewers watch available shows in 4K or download them to their DVR to watch later offline. Plus, this option will add unlimited concurrent streams at home, so the whole family can enjoy YouTube TV on different screens at once.

With a starting price of $64.99, one of the most expensive options on the market, it remains to be seen if customers will want to pay more for another add-on package. 4K content and unlimited streams, however, may be enough to get customers to bite.
