  • Nelly Furtado Ruins Canada’s National Anthem At All-Star Game, Twitter Reacts

Nelly Furtado is trending this week on social media for her unique rendition of Canada’s national anthem “O Canada” at the NBA all-star game on February 14. While some fans were amazed by her take on the country’s national anthem, some were clearly not impressed.

Furtado and Ne-Yo kicked off the NBA all-star game, performing their countries’ national hymn. Furtado, 37, sang a slow version of “O Canada” and was accompanied by Native American flutist Tony Duncan on an instrument made by Saskatoon’s Richard Dube.

Audience at the Air Canada Centre cheered after Furtado sang, but televiewers took to Twitter to slam the singer for her rendition of their national anthem. CBC Toronto asked its Twitter followers for their opinion on Furtado’s performance, and many were upset and disappointed because it seemed the singer was not able to give justice to the song.

One Twitter follower called it the “worst rendition ever!” while another said he felt “betrayed.” ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon also reacted to the singer’s performance tweeting, “Is Nelly Furtado having a breakdown? That’s about the worst performance of the Canadian Anthem I’ve ever heard…”

However, some fans were delighted to see Furtado on the court singing “O Canada” and they believe the “I’m Like a Bird” singer did a great job for keeping the melody slow and the accompaniment simple. The Canadian singer has over 20 million albums sold worldwide but she has been quiet on the music scene lately.

@tresbanging commented: “I love that @NellyFurtado opted for simple accompaniment for her performance.”
“My girl Nelly Furtado just nailed the national anthem at the NBA Allstar game! #NBAAllStarTO,” Twitter user @docchrisblair wrote.

Before Furtado showcased her unique vocals, Ne-Yo performed a low-key version of the U.S. national hymn “Star Spangled Banner.”

  • Sheryl Crow: Debate National Anthem Draws Mixed Reviews, Jokes

Sheryl Crow performed the National Anthem before last night’s Democratic Debate, and not everyone was a fan.

Before we dive into the criticism, check it out for yourself:

    So what did you think?

Here’s what Twitter had to say:

All she wanted to do was have some fun, I’m sure. Apologies.

  • Marlana VanHoose: Blind Teen Belts Rousing National Anthem In Game 6 Of NBA Finals

A 19-year-old teen named Marlana VanHoose wowed the audience as she performed the national anthem during NBA Finals on Tuesday.

The Cleveland Cavaliers decided to invite VanHoose to sing the national anthem for Game 6 of NBA Finals at Quicken Loans Arena. High profile artists like Rascal Flatts, Usher and Carlos Santana have all performed the anthem at Cleveland but the Kentucky native arguably had the best rendition of  “The Star-Spangled Banner” this year.

VanHoose was born with the cytomeglo virus and her optic nerve has never formed — she has been blind her whole life. According to her website, doctors didn’t expect her to live for more than a year.

VanHoose has sung at games for the Cavaliers before and performed at several University of Kentucky women’s basketball games. She has also shared her talent for singing at a number of other sports events including the NASCAR Sprint Series Cup Race.

The Cavaliers believed that VanHoose would bring them luck for their game against the Warriors in Game 6.

In 2012, the Lady Wildcats were undefeated in games before which VanHoose sang the national anthem. That was the time when she became an internet sensation. Her popularity grew so much that ESPN’s “E:60” even did a profile on her in December of last year.

The Cavaliers have also witnessed similar luck when they won their matchup in April against the Miami Heat after VanHoose performed the national anthem.

VanHoose’s rendition of America’s national anthem caused a buzz  on social media platforms like Twitter.

One tweet from Matt Jarrells wrote, “If you missed that National Anthem, then you missed out on goosebumps on top of goosebumps.”

“Marlana VanHoose performed a magnificent National Anthem,” said The Cauldron.

Jeff Van Gundy also commented on VanHoose’s performance tweeting,”Courage personified there.”

  • Idina Menzel, John Legend: Super Bowl’s Patriotic Voices

Idina Menzel and John Legend will serve as the patriotic singing voices of Super Bowl XLIX at Phoenix Stadium on February 1st. Menzel, best known for her vocals behind ‘Let It Go,’ from Disney’s Frozen, will belt out the National Anthem. John Legend will rouse patriotism with his rendition of ‘America the Beautiful.’

Legend follows in the footsteps of some strong voices with his performance. ‘America the Beautiful’ has been performed at past Super Bowls by the likes of Ray Charles, Alicia Keys, and Jennifer Hudson. While those are big shoes to fill, there’s no doubt that John Legend has what it takes. Anyone who has heard his recent performance of ‘Glory,’ from the Academy Award-nominated film Selma, knows they’re in for a treat when he sings.

Idina Menzel follows in some pretty amazing footsteps as well, although her spot has occasionally served as an embarrassment for both the singer and everyone at the Super Bowl. Christina Aguilera, for example, blew it big time back in 2011, when she flubbed a few lines of the song most have been singing since childhood.

In addition to Christina, Idina Menzel succeeds a throng of music greats including Garth Brooks, Diana Ross, and Beyonce in singing ‘The Star Spangled Banner.’ Hopefully, when she is announced, the commentator doesn’t do a ‘John Travola‘ and completely slaughter her name.

While Katy Perry is the headlining half time act at the Super Bowl, she might not hold a candle to the voices of Idina Menzel and John Legend. Frozen fans–even those who aren’t football fans–will likely tune in to Super Bowl XLIX–simply to hear the voice of their beloved Elsa. Hopefully if Chrissy Teigen (John Legend’s wife) is in the stands, she’ll leave her ‘cry face‘ at home.

Fans can hear both Idina Menzel and John Legend raise their patriotic voices on Sunday, February 1st on NBC.

  • Ariana Grande: How Was Her Version Of The National Anthem?

Ariana Grande: How Was Her Version Of The National Anthem?

Ariana Grande sang the national anthem for a game that saw the Seattle Seahawks play host to the visiting Green Bay Packers.

Upon hearing that the 21-year-old “Problems” singer would be doing the honors, I admit I was concerned about whether or not I would be able to understand our nation’s anthem as sung by Grande.

She is a talented girl, but enunciation is not yet a strong suit for the young talent.

    Luckily two things were clear.

Firstly the lyrics (thank goodness) and the fact that the young singer has quite the set of pipes on her.

She gave a beautiful rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” that boasted both modern pop appeal and the ability to hit all the high notes comfortably.

The packed stadium cheered, and perhaps breathed a sigh of relief.

So many other singers, and especially popular recording artists, have a way of butchering the national anthem.

Women singers are forever chasing the flawless rendition given to us by the late Whitney Houston.

Often there are unnecessary runs or notes are held way too long.

And of course there are moments when persons hit bad notes (if they can get close to the right note at all).

Thankfully Grande avoided all the familiar traps that too often leaves sports fans uninspired and looking at their watches.

It’s been a bittersweet week for the young singer.

She had to fight off rumors that nude pictures of her had leaked to the internet as part of an ongoing stolen image scandal.

She declared on Twitter that her own rear end was far cuter than the supposed impostor.

That drama aside, Grande’s new album My Everything topped the Billboard 200 album chart this week.

It is the second time an Ariana Grande album has debuted at number one, and she is able to boast having done so within about a year’s time.

It’s safe to say things are really looking up for the former Nickelodeon starlet.

  • Renée Fleming Delivers National Anthem At Super Bowl XLVIII

This past Sunday’s Super Bowl (XLVIII) was one to remember with various highlights and lows that happened throughout the whole duration. With many so concentrated on the different teams’ performances, along with the commercials, the music of the Super Bowl helps create the explosive atmosphere of this once-a-year event. The American National Anthem is also one of the pieces performed during the Super Bowl that helps set the tone for the whole event, and this year, it was performed by well-known opera singer Renée Fleming.

Fleming is an American classical soprano singer who has been performing since the 1980s during her graduate studies at Julliard, and she currently serves as the Creative Consultant for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Her musical concentration consists of: Mozart, Richard Strauss, Handel, and other classical opera composers. Fleming has also been the recipient of various prestigious musical awards, such as: the Richard Tucker Award, the National Medal of Arts, and the Swedish Polar Music Prize.

Fleming has also recently become visible in the media with various performances at media-attended events, such as: her performance of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial back in 2009, along with an appearance on The Dave Letterman Show in 2013, where she sang The Top 10 Opera Lyrics.

On Sunday, February 2nd, 2013, Fleming gracefully performed the American National Anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner” (assisted by the Armed Forces Color Guard) at the 48th Super Bowl at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey:

Prior to the game, Fleming announced via Twitter that she would be performing the National Anthem and invited viewers to tune in for her performance.

According to The New York Times, Fleming was the first opera singer to perform the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. This makes a milestone for both the Super Bowl’s history, as well as how far opera music has come.

A day later, Fleming tweeted a picture of her and Queen Latifah, who had earlier performed “America The Beautiful.”

Various celebrities who watched the Super Bowl tweeted their appreciation for Fleming’s outstanding performance.

  • Renee Fleming Nails National Anthem

We wouldn’t have known it before kickoff, but Renee Fleming’s rendition of The Star Spangled Banner may have been the highlight of the night. The Seattle Seahawks handily defeated the Denver Broncos in yesterday’s Super Bowl 43 – 8. But at least audiences got the pleasure of hearing a LIVE version of the national anthem accompanied by a grandiose 32-voice military choir backed by a pre-recorded track of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Fleming is the first opera singer to get a chance at performing the anthem for a Super Bowl. We are typically accustomed to hearing pop singers and divas take a swing at Francis Scott Key’s nearly impossible song to sing. Last year, we heard Alicia Keys. The five years priors were all female pop superstars: Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks. Interestingly enough, four of those five were American Idol standouts.

If you were wondering if perhaps Fleming was aided by some sort of backing vocal track, like Whitney Houston was in her remarkable performance in 1991, the opera singer set the story straight before the big game. “It would be a disaster. I only know how to sing live.”

The 54-year-old soprano is a four-time Grammy winner. She’s quite famous among the opera crowd and is known for her powerhouse voice. The fans in the stands and players alike seemed mesmerized by her lyrical performance. Fleming has performed at the White House for President Obama. The Metropolitan Opera regular also sang the national anthem at the 2003 World Series in Yankee Stadium.

Music appeared to take center stage last night, as the game seemed to be over by the end of the first half. In fact, today most people are talking about the performances of Fleming, Queen Latifah (who sang America the Beautiful before the game), and the half-time show which featured Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

  • Grace Potter Sings National Anthem

The equally talented and beautiful leading lady of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals performed the National Anthem for Sunday’s Pro Bowl game.

Prior to the game the singer jumped on Twitter as a last-minute gesture to announce the exciting news.

The cameras panned in, slowly falling on Potter standing alone with her Flying V guitar strapped to her chest. The announcers cued her and without missing a beat the singer climbed her way into the song. While it seemed her vocals were a tad strained from prior singing, she cruised along each historical lyric with generous warmth and rasp.

The Vermont native was clearly feeling the warmer vibes of Hawaii, sporting a very tropical, kimono-styled dress paired with a chunky gold necklace.

Her performance wasn’t overstated but rather perfectly delivered in a humble, confident way.

This was the first time the multi-talented musician had performed the national anthem.

  • Renee Fleming Has Been Chosen To Sing National Anthem At Super Bowl

The singer of the national anthem for Super Bowl XLVIII has been selected. Opera singer Renee Fleming will sing her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” for audiences watching the big game on February 2nd.

The tradition of singing the national anthem before sporting events dates back many years, and a variety of famous musicians have been chosen to sing the celebratory song at the Super Bowl over the years.

Renee Fleming will be carrying on the tradition that talented musicians such as Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Kathy Lee Gifford, and Whitney Houston have all participated in at the beginning of past Super Bowls.

Fleming certainly has big shoes to fill, but according to Entertainment Weekly, she is undoubtedly one of the most competently trained singers to take on the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in some time.

The upcoming Super Bowl will be host to the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos, the two teams that have remained at the top throughout the season and have rightfully earned a trip to this year’s Super Bowl.

The Broncos defeated the Patriots in order to advance, and the Seahawks were able to handle their bitter rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, in a fierce battle in Seattle.

Renee Fleming is an acclaimed opera singer who has picked up four Grammys over the course of her lengthy career. She was also one of the voices on the soundtrack for The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, and performed the theme song for the animated film Rise Of The Guardians. She is also the first opera singer to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.

Actor and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger was also recently added to the Super Bowl festivities, and is set to be the subject of a Bud Light commercial.

Renee Fleming brings the musical performances of the evening full circle. She joins Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will be performing the halftime show, and U2 is also set to make a performance of some sort during the show, likely in the form of an ad in support of their new single “Invisible” and/or their upcoming new album.

She has a tough job, and one that singers have been known to struggle with in the past – but her talent and experience should help her succeed at the big event.

  • James Taylor Starts National Anthem Wrong [Video]

Music legend James Taylor is known for many things; his rhythmic voice, impressive guitar skills, and now added to the list is his incorrect start to the “National Anthem.” The 55-year-old began singing “America the Beautiful” instead of “The Star Spangled Banner,” during Game 2 of the World Series, which took place at the world renowned Fenway Park.

The soothing voice for the Hall of Fame honoree, was able to maneuver the mistake with grace. James Taylor, who has won five Grammy awards, proved that even legends make mistakes.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfd2a2jTO9s

Chris Cuomo from CNN shared his views through a tweet, “Best save in singing national anthem: James Taylor tonight during #WorldSeries.”

James Taylor may have hoped that the miss would go under the radar; however, Twitter is buzzing with the news.

Singing the “National Anthem” at Boston’s Fenway Park sounds intimidating enough, but to recover quickly from any type of misstep would take a legend to pull off so effortlessles. As many have already commented, only James Taylor could make a mistake sound that great.

  • James Taylor Messes Up National Anthem at World Series Games [VIDEO]

It happens to the best of us, right? We’re ready to sing a song or recite something we’ve done a million times and know by heart, only to have a brain fart. This happened to James Taylor on Thursday when he sang the national anthem at Game 2 of the World Series in Boston. Taylor momentarily forgot which song he was supposed to be singing. Watch the flub below.

“Oh, beautiful…,” Taylor began instead of starting with “Oh, say can you see.” Whoops, a case of confusing patriotic songs. After accidentally launching into “America the Beautiful” instead of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Taylor quickly recovered and otherwise pulled off the national anthem without a hitch. Taylor was singing “America the Beautiful” during the seventh inning stretch, which explains why he started off with a couple words from the wrong song.

Messing up the national anthem in front of millions of people would cause many musicians to have an “oh, crap” moment and force them to start over, but not James Taylor. He changed to the right song so quickly that you almost didn’t realize he made a mistake. If you’re going to mess up, that’s how you do it.

While most folks are usually quick to be very critical of anyone who messes up the national anthem, most people were very understanding of Taylor’s mistake:

Taylor, a Boston native, was happy to be at Fenway Park singing at the World Series. “It’s been a hard year for Boston,” Taylor said, referring to the Marathon bombings. “I’m glad I can do this. I’ve been struck by how personally everyone in the city responded and how much it made us feel like a community.”

  • James Taylor and Mary J. Blige Sing National Anthem

It’s official. Soulful lady, Miss Mary J. Blige will be singing the National Anthem for the premiere game of the World Series tonight between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox.

And who better to sing the National Anthem at Fenway Park Thursday than Boston native and folk-rock extraordinaire, James Taylor? That’s right, the 65-year-old musician will be belting out the sacred song before the second game of the World Series on Thursday night.

Bronx native Blige is an old pro with experience singing the vocally-challenging anthem at Yankee Stadium during the 2009 Series.

But Blige isn’t the only singer with the musical-experience prowess when it comes to performing on such a momentous occasion.

Taylor sang the song twice, both in 2004 and 2007 for the Fall Classics at Fenway. He’s even performed the anthem for the NHL Winter Classic surely representing the Boston Bruins hockey team.

“It’s hard to believe for a Red Sox fan that we’re actually going back to the World Series,” Taylor told The Berkshire Eagle on Tuesday, “especially after last year. I guess the message is that Sox fans can never give up hope despite the roller coaster we’re usually on.”

And apparently Taylor is keeping up with the Sox, rocking that Boston beard. Will the rock legend be sporting the beard tomorrow, or will he take the razor to it? Looks like we’ll have to wait to see it on Thursday.

Tonight’s Game 1 airs at 8:07 p.m. on the Fox network.

  • Petition to Make R. Kelly’s ‘Ignition (Remix)’ the National Anthem Is the Most Important Petition

In the past, I’ve been critical of some of the more frivolous petitions to hit the White House’s “We the People” online petition site. A petition to build a functioning Death Star becoming so popular that it receives an official response? Not that exciting.

Then you have the totally batsh*t petitions like the ones from states that asked to secede from the Union or to deport Piers Morgan for expressing a view about gun control. What a waste of the platform, even if the platform is shallow and patronizing.

This petition does not qualify as frivolous. This is important.

A new petition with just over 5,300 signatures wants to change the U.S. National Anthem from the tired old Star Spangled Banner to R. Kelly’s 2003 hit “Ignition (Remix).

And they make a compelling argument:

We, the undersigned, would like the Obama administration to recognize the need for a new national anthem, one that even a decade after its creation, is still hot and fresh out the kitchen. America has changed since Francis Scott Key penned our current anthem in 1814. Since then, we have realized that after the show, it’s the afterparty, and that after the party, it’s the hotel lobby, and–perhaps most importantly–that ’round about four, you’ve got to clear the lobby, at which point it’s strongly recommended that you take it to the room and freak somebody. President Obama: we ask you to recognize the evolution of this beautiful country and give us an anthem that better suits the glorious nation we have become.

Since the White House recently raised the signature threshold to 100,000, we’re going to have to do some hard work to make this a success. I know we can do it guys.

  • Luke Bryan Doesn’t Know the National Anthem, Issues Apology

Luke Bryan, the country music singer who began his career by penning tunes for the likes of Travis Tritt and many others, recently performed the National Anthem at the Major League Baseball All-Star game. Although it would appear that Bryan is well-versed in the country’s patriotic ditty, eagle-eyed viewers noticed the musician kept looking at his hand during his performance. As it turns out, Bryan didn’t know the words to the song by heart, forcing him to read the lyrics he’d scrawled on the palm of his hand. Naturally, people were angry.

“I had a few keys words written down to insure myself that I wouldn’t mess up. I just wanted to do my best. I promise it was from the heart,” Bryan said of the debacle. “If I offended anyone with my approach I sincerely apologize. Anytime I sing the anthem it is an honor and my heart beats out of my chest.”

Honestly, I kind of feel bad for the guy. Singers who tackle the anthem at sporting events are under the insanely critical eye of the masses, who, if forced to sing the anthem in front of a large crowd of people, would probably have some trouble remembering every single word to the song. People make mistakes, folks — it’s going to happen. Calling Bryan “unpatriotic” for his efforts is madness, as I seriously doubt he was attempting to insult the country by making sure he didn’t screw up. In fact, he was trying to prevent such a thing for happening.

Guess what? Bryan isn’t the first singer to botch his performance of the National Anthem, and, chances are, he’s not going to be the last person to do it. Below you’ll find a collection of videos from folks who, for whatever reason, didn’t rise to the occasion when they were tapped to perform the song for the masses. So get off Bryan’s back, already. Unless he was singing the song while burning an American flag, I seriously doubt he meant any harm.

And, because it’s funny, a clip from “Naked Gun”.

  • Lana Del Rey Transforms Kennedy Story Into Her Own

Lana Del Rey was all but unknown until last summer, when a little video for a song called “Video Games” quickly spread like wildfire across the web. In the subsequent year, Del Rey has managed to get into the public consciousness with catchy beats and lovelorn lyrics, often tying in audio clips from real events into her songs. Now, she’s taken a very famous tragedy and spun it on its head.

Playing characters inspired by both Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy, the singer tackles a love story so famous it was daunting to even imagine trying to recreate it. But Del Rey and the video’s director, Anthony Mandler, insist it wasn’t about trying to recreate it so much as it was portraying a deep, aching loss.

“It was never about re-creating a death scene, it was always about the person sitting next to him. It was always about seeing it through her eyes, seeing this kind of castle crumble in the moment, and that shot where she’s coming up out of the car, and the pain in her eyes, that destruction, it’s like the whole castle is crumbling around her. That’s what we were going for,” Mandler says.

The video gives us powerful images of a young couple in love, living a life of privilege with their three children; rapper A$AP Rocky plays the Kennedy role, which has some people concerned about the image of a black president being assassinated.

“There’s a kind of micro-commentary of ‘This is the new royalty,’ you know, A$AP and Lana, trying to pick two people to maybe represent the next generation of something,” he said. “I think even with an African American president, it’s still controversial to see him sitting and playing JFK, it’s still taboo, even if it shouldn’t be. You’re kind of like ‘Is this right or wrong? This feels very right, but also feels very wrong at the same time.’ And I think in all of Lana’s songs, and her image in general, and the person she is, it all fits in. It’s kind of like there are two sides of a mirror, and you’re not sure which side you’re looking at.”

The tale gets a retro-goes-modern spin, with Jackie and Kennedy throwing dice at a yacht party and dancing seductively with each other. When the end comes, it is beneath Del Rey’s spoken-word finale, which evokes a woman’s enormous grief at the loss of life as she knows it:

And I remember when I met him, it was so clear that he was the only one for me. We both knew it, right away. And as the years went on, things got more difficult – we were faced with more challenges. I begged him to stay. Try to remember what we had at the beginning.

He was charismatic, magnetic, electric and everybody knew it. When he walked in every woman’s head turned, everyone stood up to talk to him. He was like this hybrid, this mix of a man who couldn’t contain himself. I always got the sense that he became torn between being a good person and missing out on all of the opportunities that life could offer a man as magnificent as him. And in that way, I understood him and I loved him.

I loved him, I loved him, I loved him.

And I still love him. I love him.

Kelly Clarkson Doesn’t Blow National Anthem At Super Bowl

Were you betting that Kelly Clarkson would pull a Steven Tyler and make a mockery of the most sacred of songs? Well, she didn’t.

The pop singer performed the National Anthem just mere minutes ago and the crowd was ecstatic. She pulled it off very nicely.

The added touch of the children singing it alongside her really made the moment. It really captured the American spirit on display at the Super Bowl.

Twitter, of course, is always a great place for knee jerk reactions. Let’s see what they had to say!
