  • Carrie Underwood Is No Longer Top ‘American Idol’ Moneymaker

For the past two years, Carrie Underwood has been the top attraction when it comes to American Idol alums, raking in the most cash of all the former contestants.

But for 2015, that changed. There’s a new top dawg when it comes to American Idol alums.

According to Forbes, season eight runner-up Adam Lambert is the highest-earning Idol star, raking in $10m over the course of the year.

How did he do it? Mostly with touring, apparently. Lambert plays huge shows as the new frontman for Queen. The classic band and Lambert joined forces in 2011, and they set off touring the world in 2014.

Don’t feel too bad for Carrie Underwood, however. She’s still number two with a cool $8m in 2015.

“Kelly [Clarkson] too, but, you know, I was just on New Year’s with Carrie, and she’s just a superstar. She really is. So I take Carrie,” he said.

There’s not much more time to make a new American Idol star. The show it currently airing its final season.

  • Natalie Cole: Cause of Death Revealed by Family

The cause of death of singer Natalie Cole has been revealed.

According to her family, Cole died of complications from idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH).

In a statement, Cole’s family said that she was diagnosed with IPAH shortly after her successful kidney transplant in 2009.

“This is a very serious and progressive disorder in which the small blood vessels of the lungs are markedly narrowed or obstructed … She responded well to PAH-specific agents over many years, during which she performed many concerts world-wide, but eventually succumbed to intractable right heart failure, an outcome that unfortunately commonly occurs in this progressive disorder, despite modern therapies,” said Cole’s family in the statement.

Cole, the daughter of Nat King Cole, died at the age of 65 last week.

“It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our Mother and sister’s passing,” her family said at the time. “Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived…with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever.”

  • Barry Gibb Remembers ‘Dear Friend’ and Manager Robert Stigwood

Longtime Bee Gees manager and producer Robert Stigwood died on January 4th at the age of 81, and Bee Gees member Barry Gibb has paid tribute to his “dear friend”.

“Robert Stigwood was an enigma. A victorian figure cast into the sixties to work with Brian Epstein and The Beatles. He hitch hiked from Adelaide to London with a powerful vision to rule the entertainment world. He was almost aristocratic in nature, the mixture of talent and insight from the moment you met him was omnipresent,” Gibb said in a statement.

“He signed us as his group at a moment in time when groups were no longer being signed. The odds against us having success was very high but Robert took an act of faith and against the advice of others, became our manager. He also became a member of our family and all the success we had was because of Robert Stigwood. On behalf of Linda and our family we wish you god speed. Every time the first of May comes around I will think of you and I will miss your phone call. We shared so many wonderful moments. I will never forget you my dear friend.”

Stigwood also produced the classic film Saturday Night Fever and served as a manager for many other legendary acts, including Eric Clapton and The Who.

Robin Gibb’s son announced Stigwood’s death on Monday.

“I would like to share the sad news with you all, that my godfather, and the longtime manager of my family, Robert Stigwood, has passed away. A creative genius with a very quick and dry wit, Robert was the driving force behind The Bee Gees career, as well as having discovered Cream, and subsequently managing Eric Clapton. He was also of course, the creator of the movies Saturday Night Fever and Grease, and many Broadway musicals with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. RSO Records pretty much defined the late 70’s. Of course, his biography is very extensive and can easily be found online…..I would like to thank Robert for his kindness to me over the years as well as his mentorship to my family. “Stiggy”, you will be missed,” Spencer Gibb wrote on his Facebook page.

  • Guns N’ Roses Original Band Line Up To Come Together for Coachella 2016

Guns N’ Roses Original Band Line Up To Come Together for Coachella 2016

After almost two decades of waiting, fans will surely be delighted to hear that their beloved rock band Guns N’ Roses will be reuniting for Coachella in April 2016.

It seems Axl Rose and Slash are ready to set aside any ill feelings they have for each other and move forward with the rest of the Guns N’ Roses gang in a get-together concert next year. The two have had a rocky relationship that prompted Rose to not show up during their band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

However, it looks like all is well now as rumors of the band coming together have been circulating around the web. According to various sources, the original band line up – Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan – are reuniting to headline Coachella 2016. Initial reports claimed Rose and Slash will team up for their first gig together after more than 20 years, but other sources also stated that bassist McKagan will be joining the reunion.

The founding members will be performing on April 15-17 and April 22-24, claimed multiple sources.

Moreover, the band is reportedly planning to do as many as 25 North American stadium tours in the summer of 2016. The lineup is also set to perform at the new Las Vegas Arena, which is scheduled to open on April 6.

Guns N’ Roses founding members last performed together in July 1993 at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires. Rose is the only original member who remains in the group up to this day. The band’s most recent tour took place mostly in South America and The Joint in Las Vegas, which reportedly earned $15.2 million.

Reports allege that the rock band is being paid between $3 and $8 million dollars per show with ticket prices ranging from $250-$275.

Guns N’ Roses was formed in 1985 with original members Axl Rose on vocals, Slash on lead guitars, McKagan on bass, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitars, and Steven Adler on drums. They debuted in 1987 with Appetite for Destruction album, which carried their famous single “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” G N’ R Lies, and Use Your Illusion I and II are considered two of the most successful albums the group released in their entire career.

Guns N’ Roses Received a Platinum Honor for this 1987 Song

Appetite for Destruction was hailed as the biggest-selling debut with 18 million in U.S. sales. It remained at the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart for five weeks, according to Billboard. The rock band sold 44.5 million albums in the U.S. alone, declared the Recording Industry Association of America.

The Internet has been abuzz with reports of their forthcoming reunion after the band updated their official website recently. Their original logo was also featured on their website, which further ignited the get-together concert rumor.

Besides Guns N’ Roses, LCD Soundsystem will come together for Coachella 2016. Coachella has become a venue for reunions and band revivals in recent years. In 2007, it was able to get the Rage Against the Machine to reunite and perform together. Fans were also able to witness My Bloody Valentine to perform in 2009 and Outkast in 2014. Last year’s event attracted 198,000 people with a total revenue of $84.2 million, according to Boxscore.

Meanwhile, representatives for Guns N’ Roses have yet to comment on the reports. Coachella producer, Paul Tollet, as well as agent Ken Fermaglich at United talent Agency have not released any official announcement with regard to the 2016 event. AEG Executives, which will be responsible for the operation of the new Las Vegas Arena, also has not aired their side yet.

  • Dee Snider: Twisted Sister Singer Gives Donald Trump the OK to Use Song

Not everyone is pleased about Donald Trump using their music at his campaign events. Just ask R.E.M. Or Neil Young.

But one famous frontman is OK with The Donald rallying support with his mega-hit.

Dee Snider, lead singer of the band Twisted Sister, says he gave Trump permission to use his classic song “We’re Not Gonna Take It” at his events.

Snider says that he and Trump don’t agree on all the issues, but the two are friends and the song itself is “about rebellion.”

Here’s what Snider told Canadian Business in a interview:

He called and he asked, which I appreciated. I said, ‘Look, we don’t see eye to eye on everything—there are definitely issues that we’re far apart on.’ But thinking back to when I wrote the song and what the song is about, it’s about rebellion, speaking your mind and fighting the system. If anybody’s doing that, he sure is. Trump and Bernie Sanders are the two extremes. They’re raising holy hell and shaking everything up. That’s what ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ is about. And we’re friends. I have spent time with Donald and his family. I don’t think either of us expected that we would like each other, but you know, Donald Trump is a pretty chill guy. He’s a frontman. When that camera goes on, he furls his brow, he does his thing. Off-camera he’s very self-deprecating. He makes jokes about being too orange and about his hair.

That’s one way to go about it. Snider and Trump appeared together on a season of Celebrity Apprentice. Trump fired Snider.

  • Warren Beatty Is So Vain, Apparently

Carly Simon’s 1972 hit “You’re So Vain” has been sung about plenty of exes. But who was Carly actually talking about in the song? There’s been speculation for years, as Simon had her string of famous exes. Now, one piece of the puzzle has fallen into place.

Simon has divulged that the song is at least in part about actor Warren Beatty.

The list of possible targets of “You’re So Vain” is pretty long. Names that have been mentioned over the years include Mick Jagger, David Bowie, James Taylor, David Cassidy, Cat Stevens, and of course, Warren Beatty.

In a recent interview with People, Simon says that the second verse is definitely about Beatty.

“I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren,” she told People.

So, do you remember that second verse?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and. ..

Apparently, Beatty always knew the song was about him, in part.

“Warren thinks the whole thing is about him,” says Simon in an upcoming memoir.

But Beatty is only the subject of the second verse. There are still two other men referenced in that song. Who do you think they are?

  • Microsoft’s Zune Completely Dead Now

    Microsoft’s Zune Completely Dead Now

Microsoft first released the Zune as its competitor to Apple’s iPod in 2006. While the device looked promising at the time, it just didn’t work out. It was discontinued in 2011, but the brand and some associated capabilities have lingered around in the meantime.

That ends now. A couple months ago, Microsoft announced the official retirement of the Zune brand. From Microsoft Support:

As of November 15, 2015, Zune services will be retired. You will no longer be able to stream or download content to your device from the Zune music service. However, Zune devices will still function as music players and any MP3 content that you own on the Zune device will remain there. You’ll also be able to transfer music to and from your Zune player.

Note Content that was purchased with DRM may not play if the license can’t be renewed.

Existing Zune Music Pass subscriptions will be converted to Groove Music Pass subscriptions.

Note If you’ve received a 25-digit code and it doesn’t work, wait until the day of the month your subscription began before trying again. If you don’t know what day that is, you can find it in your Microsoft account, or you can contact Xbox Support. (For example, if your annual subscription began on February 5, then it would be the 5th of the month.)

If you’re still clinging to your Zune, I’m afraid the time has come to loosen your grip and evolve with the times.

  • YouTube Music App Arrives For On-The-Go Streaming

YouTube Music App Arrives For On-The-Go Streaming

Last month, Google unveiled YouTube Red and announced that a new standalone YouTube Music app was on the way. YouTube Red is a new paid subscription-based tier that allows YouTube users to watch videos without ads, save videos to watch them offline, and play videos in the background while using other apps.

That costs $9.99 and it also enables you to better take advantage of the new YouTube Music app, which the company unveiled today.

“No matter where you start in the app, the music will never stop,” says product management director T. Jay Fowler. “Every song you play or artist you choose will take you on an endless journey through YouTube’s music catalog. A simple tap and you’re on your way, enjoying your favorite music and discovering new artists effortlessly. The home tab will recommend tracks just for you and create personalized stations based on your tastes.”

The app is significantly different than Spotify and the like. A key difference is that YouTube has tons of stuff that you won’t find anywhere else. This includes remixes, covers, live videos, etc. Of course the sound quality on this content varies too.

“And you can also amplify your experience with a YouTube Red membership,” explains Fowler. “With YouTube Red, you’ll get to experience all that the Music app has to offer without ads. You’ll also have the ability to listen to music offline and seamlessly switch between video or audio-only (so you can decide whether you actually watch Silentó whip and nae nae). And also be able to hear any video play, even when you’re in another app or have your screen turned off.”

The app is available for iOS and Android now and Google is giving you access to the “amplified” experience for free for fourteen days.

  • Passion Pit Frontman Michael Angelakos Comes Out

Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos announced his split with wife Kristy Mucci a couple of months ago.

Now, Angelakos has come out as gay.

“I lived in such a group of straight people …not that anybody was going to be not understanding .. it was just not the time,” he said about the last few years, in an interview with author Bret Easton Ellis on his podcast.

According to Angelakos, his wife was one of the main reasons he decided to be honest with himself about his sexuality.

“When I decided to really deal with it head on, which was, I don’t know, in June, she was the one who spearheaded it in a way,” he revealed, according to ET. “She said, ‘You need to figure out what’s going on with your sexuality because you can’t hate yourself anymore.’”

“I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much,” he added. “I think that was one of the most painful things when we decided to separate.”

Passion Pit’s Twitter account recently tweeted that “everything’s gonna be ok,” and that Angelakos has “received so many kind and supportive messages.”

“When you are teetering on the edge of homosexuality, it’s just so much more comfortable to keep going back to what you know because … I didn’t want to deal with other people,” says Angelakos.

And why did he choose now to reveal it?

“When this was all happening recently, finally, I just decided it might be best to talk about it here,” he told Ellis. “I don’t really know what happened, but it’s just one of those gut feelings. It’s the same gut feeling I had when I said, ‘OK, I kind of just need to talk to people about the fact that I am.’ I’m gay. And that’s it. It just has to happen. This was exactly the type of situation where I don’t feel like I’m being threatened.”

  • Facebook Is Turning Spotify, Apple Music Links Into 30-Sec Previews That Anyone Can Listen To

Facebook Is Turning Spotify, Apple Music Links Into 30-Sec Previews That Anyone Can Listen To

Since the dawn of the status update, Facebook users have been posting about what music they’re listening to. A lot of the time, users post links to YouTube videos. For a while, Spotify shares have gone in and then out of favor. Nobody really liked linking their entire Spotify activity to Facebook. That was just overkill.

Now, Facebook has thought up a new way for users to share music. The company is now rolling out what it calls “Music Stories” on its iOS app.

Music Stories are basically 30-second clips from songs shared via Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes. When users share a song on their Facebook feed from Spotify, for example, Facebook converts that track to a Music Story and allows users to listen to a 30-second clip.

The music is contained inside Facebook’s wall – meaning you don’t have to be a member of Spotify or Apple Music to hear the samples.

    From Facebook:

On the Facebook iPhone app, songs and albums shared from the leading music services will become “Music Stories,” a new post format which allows people to listen to a 30-second preview of the shared song (or album) while on Facebook. The preview is streamed from either Apple Music or Spotify (depending on the source of the link shared), and can be purchased from or saved to the respective music streaming service.

The previews from Apple Music and iTunes are available directly through Facebook. If you want more, click through to stream full tracks on Apple Music or add music to your library with a single click to purchase through the iTunes store. The previews from Spotify are also available directly through Facebook. If you want more, click through to stream full tracks on Spotify or add to your library without leaving Facebook.

According to the company, Music Stories will expand support for other streaming platforms in the near future.

So, long story short, expect a lot more music to pop up in your news feed.

  • Jimi Hendrix’s London Flat Restored, To Open As Museum

A museum dedicated to Jimi Hendrix will be opened in London next year. The London flat of arguably the greatest guitarist in the history of rock music will open its doors to the public after undergoing a £2.4m renovation made possible by private donors and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Hendrix purchased the third floor Mayfair flat located at 23 Brook Street in 1968 and shared it with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham. Hendrix called this flat “the first real home of my own.” The bedroom of the renowned musician was restored to how it would have looked when he was still alive. There will be an exhibit about his life and career, and one of the main attractions of the exhibit will be his Epiphone FT 79 acoustic guitar.

Opening the Hendrix museum will establish the building as home to two great musical talents: Hendrix and Baroque composer Georg Frideric Handel.

Handel lived at 25 Brook Street for 26 years, where he penned many of his best musical creations including Messiah. Hendrix and Handel’s homes were separate buildings in the past but were merged together. Handel House Trust owns both homes and had used the Hendrix flat as an office.

“It is hard to think of another home in the world with such a concentration of musical genius. We hope that the opening of Jimi Hendrix’s flat will give people an added insight into the life and work of a figure whose actions have been examined to no end since his death in 1970,” Alistair Stranack, Chairman of the Handel House Trust said in a statement.

Stranack added that they were able to paint an image of one part of Hendrix’s life in Brook Street through their thorough research into the building and interviews with the musician’s friends.

It will be open to the public on February 10, 2016 and tickets will be available starting November 2.

Gomez reportedly made a jump from 9th place to 2nd to reach her highest rank in her 55th week on the list. The jump was primarily the result of Gomez’ latest album selling 85,000 copies. This has boosted her ratings by 182 percent, and contributed 65% of her total Artist 100 points. Gomez sent a tweet to her followers and fans to express her gratitude for supporting her.

“I just wanna say thank you to all you guys for the past few weeks. Reminds me of why I do what I do!” she said.

Meanwhile, Canadian singer and songwriter The Weeknd has returned to No. 1 on the Artist 100, led by “The Hills”, which sits at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100. His eight weeks at the top of the list is only second to Taylor Swift’s 31 trips to the weekly rankings’ summit.

The Artist 100 list ranks artists based on Billboard’s other charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Top Album Sales, and Social 50. Billboard then uses these statistics and combines them with album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming, and social media popularity to come up with the top artists of the week.

Also included in this week’s Artist 100 are Drake, who slides from the top spot to No. 3, Swift goes down one level from 3 to 4, and The Game re-enters the top 5 with his new album The Documentary 2.
