‘Murdered: Soul Suspect’ Coming June 3

Square Enix today announced that Murdered: Soul Suspect will be launching in the U.S. on June 3, 2014. The game was announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One less than one month ago and will cost $60 for those platforms. In an odd pricing twist, though, the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of the game will all cost only $50.

The publisher is also throwing in an “interactive digital strategy map” for customers who pre-order any version of the game from Amazon, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, or Walmart. The strategy guide can be downloaded and accessed on tablets and smartphones.

Announced Shortly before Sony’s big PlayStation 4 reveal in 2013, Murdered: Soul Suspect was largely lost among Square Enix’s marketing push for its Final Fantasy titles and Thief. The title was promptly forgotten by many as the hype surrounding action-packed next-gen launch titles rose.

Soul Suspect, in contrast to so many current high-budget game projects, is a supernatural detective thriller. Players will take on the role of a detective named Ronan O’Connor who has just been murdered. As a ghostly entity O’Connor finds himself in the half-world of Dusk and must solve his own murder to find peace.

The concept is a unique one coming from a large publisher, and especially one that is leaning increasingly on mobile development. The latest preview for the game shows that the dark, horror-laced themes of Soul Suspect will be thoroughly explored during the story-focused game:

  • ‘Murdered: Soul Suspect’ Coming to PS4, Xbox One

One year ago, on the eve of the PlayStation 4 announcement, Square Enix revealed Murdered: Souls Suspect. The game’s first teaser trailer promised a type of supernatural detective work that hasn’t yet been seen in video games.

Since that time, though, only a few details have emerged about Murdered: Soul Suspect. Players will take on the role of Ronan O’Connor, a detective shot down in his prime. As Ronan’s ghost, players will pass through walls and possess other characters to lear more about Ronan’s murder and help catch the murderer.

Murdered: Soul Suspect had already been announced for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Today Square Enix officially (but unsurprisingly) announced that the game will also be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The publisher promises that these version of the game will have better visuals, including many of the graphical upgrades seen in the recent Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. Square Enix also promised that the game will run at a native 1080p resolution on both consoles, though it did not reveal whether the Xbox One version of the game will run at lower framerates.

A new trailer for Murdered: Soul Suspect was also released today. It previews a bit more of the game’s story and introduces a new key character:

  • Square Enix’s “Murdered: Soul Suspect” Looks Damn Intriguing

With the gaming industry becoming a land of modern combat sequels, it’s nice to see an industry leader continue to explore new characters and storylines not connected to previous games from their stable. Granted, not every video game developer is focusing on their next big sequel; and, to be sure, not every new chapter of an established property dooms the video game to repetition and lack of creativity. That being said, anytime a big name developer dives into a new IP, it’s probably worth noting.

Which brings us to Murdered: Soul Suspect, a new action/solve-the-mystery game from Square Enix, the company synonymous with Final Fantasy and the new Tomb Raider, to name a (very) few. Again, because this is an established developer with a proven track record, the fact they are introducing a brand-new, non-sequel-related set of characters and their surrounding storyline is worth your attention. Of course, this is helped by the fact that Square Enix released an awesome trailer that gives us a peek at the universe they are creating. In it, you play Ronan O’Connor, a police officer who recently met his demise. In the form of a ghost, it’s up to Ronan to solve his own murder using his newly acquired spectral abilities.

Take a look and see what the fuss is about:

The glowing bullet holes in Ronan’s chest are an incredibly nice touch, something that will, in all likelihood, become the game’s recognizable symbol. As you can probably tell, the game allows players to possess NPC characters as you try to figure out who had you killed and why. Because the game isn’t scheduled until 2014, other details still remain a little sketchy. It’s uncertain what other abilities players will have. For instance, when players are in apparition form, will they be able to interact with the environment, much like Patrick Swayze learned how to do in Ghost, or is that particular skill only attainable if the player is in possession of another character?

According to early reports, Murdered: Soul Suspect will be available in 2014 on the PS3, Xbox 360, and the PC. No word as to whether M:SS will be ported over to the next-gen consoles, with such news was not available in the initial announcement.

  • Murdered: Soul Suspect Announced For “Early 2014”

For a while now, Square Enix has been hosting an alternate reality game (ARG) from the website murdered.com. Today the publisher has officially announced an upcoming game called Murdered: Soul Suspect.

The game’s tentative release date has been set for “early 2014,” though it’s not uncommon for dates of that sort to be pushed back. Soul Suspect will definitely be coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. No word yet on whether the title will also show up on next-generation consoles, which are expected to go on sale this holiday season.

Earlier this week, gamers and ARG fans sifted through clues to uncover a short teaser trailer for the game. It seems that players will be tasked with solving “the hardest case of all…their own murder.” Whether this means the game detective work or ghostly gunplay, as the trailer suggests, but the preview does seem to indicate the game will have will have a noir styling and flavor.
