  • Lana Del Rey Threat By Eminem Shines Light On Misogyny In Rap Music

Who’d want to punch Lana Del Rey “in the face twice”? Eminem apparently.

Or at least that’s the impression given in his controversial freestyle rap video.

During the 18-minute rant set to music, the 42-year-old rap artist said the following about the “Young And Beautiful” singer:

But I may fight for gay rights, especially if the dyke is more of a knockout than Janay Rice

Play nice? Bitch I’ll punch Lana Del Rey right in the face twice, like Ray Rice in broad daylight in the plain sight of the elevator surveillance

‘Til her head is banging on the railing, then celebrate with the Ravens

So not only did Slim Shady brag about a desire to hit female pop artist, he used a highly controversial situation involving an alleged victim of domestic violence in order to make his point.

Sadly, this type of imagery is hardly foreign to rap music.

Beyonce’s husband Jay-Z made a reference to domestic violence on her track “Drunk In Love”:

I’m Ike Turner … baby, no, I don’t play / Now eat the cake, Anna Mae

    Who is “Anna Mae”?

    Domestic violence survivor Tina Turner.

The “eat the cake” line is a reference to a scene in the biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It?, which goes into the abuse that Turner said she suffered at the hands of her former husband in graphic and disturbing detail.

There are other, far too many examples of anti-woman language that can be pulled from hip hop.

Lana Del Rey and Janay Rice just happen to be the latest in a long line of women held up as examples of the contempt many male rappers have for women.

Although many will rise to condemn rappers like Eminem and Jay-Z for their words and behavior, how many of the outraged will express this opinion towards the people who buy their music?

Both men and women will continue to spend money on the misogynistic music made by these artists.

The Lana Del Rey line and reference to abuse will hopefully help shine a brighter spotlight on the problematic attitudes casually expressed in modern rap music.

  • Demi Lovato Talks Body Image and Shame

Demi Lovato Talks Body Image and Shame

Demi Lovato was stunning at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. She wore a sexy red dress that revealed lots of cleavage. It wasn’t too long ago that the ‘Heart Attack’ singer wouldn’t even consider wearing such a dress. She suffered from serious body image problems.

Wilmer Valderrama’s long time girlfriend went to rehab for a fairly lengthy stint, back in 2010, and although she did have some drug and alcohol problems, she also fought bulimia. Stemming from a body image problem, her dislike of her body reached the dangerous point. Now she is hoping that her new, healthier feelings about her body might help others struggling with a poor body image to realize there is hope.

Demi Lovato shared some pictures of herself on Sunday’s VMAs red carpet via Instagram. She said of the them, “This picture makes me feel so many mixed emotions.. I remember the day I wore the dress in the very first picture. I remember asking for Spanx to flatten my stomach because I use to feel so heavy and ‘fat.’ Now looking at this picture, you can clearly see my hip bones.”

“It makes me sad because I wasted so many years ashamed of my body when I could’ve been living the happy and healthy life I live today,” she continued. “It TRULY just goes to show you that your perceptions can lie to you. OR they can make you learn to enjoy life.”

“Fortunately looking at the picture of myself in the red dress…I not only feel so grateful for the love and support I’ve had from fans, friends and family, but… I also feel.. beautiful,” she concluded. “I’m so excited to live my life the way I deserve to and to the complete fullest. Thank you guys once again.. I’m so thankful for my Lovatics. I love you… And never forget that staying strong is worth it.”

The last of Demi Lovato’s Instagram post read, “Fortunately looking at the picture of myself in the red dress…I not only feel so grateful for the love and support I’ve had from fans, friends and family, but… I also feel.. beautiful,” she concluded. “I’m so excited to live my life the way I deserve to and to the complete fullest. Thank you guys once again.. I’m so thankful for my Lovatics. I love you… And never forget that staying strong is worth it.”

Demi Lovato went to hell and back when suffering from her eating disorder. As anyone knows who has experienced it or stood beside someone else who has, it’s a very real medical issue. Kudos to Demi for working hard and finally seeing that all her work and therapy was worth her time and energy. She sets a fine example for others who may be battling bulimia or another type of eating disorder.

  • Miley Cyrus Warns Parents About Tour’s Raunchiness

Ever since Miley Cyrus twerked at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, it seems that she’s been out to prove one thing: That she’s no longer Hannah Montana and she’ll do almost anything to let people know that.

So it’s probably no surprise that her Bangerz Tour is full of carefully planned raunchiness, which may be appealing to some of her young fans but not necessarily their parents.

Over the past few days there have been several reports that the 21-year old singer’s tour may be canceled because a lot of parents think it’s too racy. However, those reports have since been denied.

“There is no truth whatsoever to any stories of rumors of venues pulling out of the Bangerz Tour,” said events company Live Nation.

“Miley has created a tour that’s big, spectacular, entertaining and everything you would expect from Miley Cyrus. Reviews have been amazing and most important, fans are loving the show and having a great time.”

So far the tour has received tons of attention, but not really for the actual songs or Cyrus’ performance. Most of the hubbub has been about how risque the show is, and how it’s extremely inappropriate for young teens and preteens, since they make up a large number of Cyrus’ fan base.

But will all of these complaints force the singer to tone it down a bit or tweak her performance at all? Probably not, since that would totally go against her contrived image of being a rebellious rock star.

This past Thursday Cyrus took to her Twitter account to let people know that things will continue to be raunchy on her tour, so folks should brace themselves for the unexpected. “You can’t say I didn’t warn you,” she wrote. “Now sit back relax and enjoy the show.”

  • Taylor Swift Drops ‘F-Bomb’ at Video Music Awards

Taylor Swift found a good friend in her tour’s opening act, Ed Sheeran, when he explained the truth behind Taylor’s “f-bomb” outburst at last Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards.

As Harry Styles, Swift’s tumultuous ex-boyfriend, and his band, One Direction, took the stage to accept an award at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Swift said, “Shut the f*** up!” The statement was caught on camera, which Swift soon realized.

Taylor quickly figured out that anyone who heard this may see it as her latest jab at Styles. However, Sheeran said at a press conference recently that Taylor approached him as soon as the episode was over and said, “I think I messed up.”

Sheeran relayed that Swift was not talking about, or to, Styles or One Direction with her lewd comment; rather, BFF Selena Gomez had just confessed to Swift that she thought Miley Cyrus would take home the award for Best Pop Video, for which Gomez was also a contender. Swift then said, “Shut the f*** up!” to Gomez as a sign of support.

Gomez also refused to comment on such rumors, telling one brazen reporter, “Don’t try that with me,” when he tried to lure Selena into a trap of gossiping about girlfriends.

Nevertheless, One Direction definitely wasn’t too happy about the comment, although Styles, Swift and Sheeran sat together at an after-party later that night. Sheeran describes himself as the common dominator for Swift and Styles now, as a mutual friend of both. (Harry and Taylor dated for a couple of months in 2012 but broke up after a reportedly terrible trip to the Virgin Islands in January.)
