  • ’12 Years A Slave’ Wins Best Picture At The Oscars

The historical slavery drama 12 Years a Slave bagged the award for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. Just as noteworthy, British film director, Steve McQueen, made history as the first black director to win the Best Picture award since the Academy Awards’ inception.

12 Years a Slave went against The Wolf of Wall Street, Philomena, Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club, Captain Phillips,  Her, American Hustle, and its biggest contender Gravity.

12 Years a Slave is based on the 1853 memoir with the same title. It focuses on the story of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor,) a New York-born man who was kidnapped by slave traders, sold into slavery, and worked in Louisiana for years under William Ford (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), the owner of a plantation.

During his acceptance speech, McQueen dedicated the golden statue to the millions of people who are still enduring slavery in the world today saying, “Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live.”

The movie took home two other awards – Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o who is a newcomer in the business. The Mexican-born actress who was raised in Kenya won the award a day after her 31st birthday. In her speech, she reminded everyone that dreams do come true, no matter where you are from.

Other winners are Alfonso Cuarón as Best Director for Gravity, Matthew McConaughey as Best Actor for “Dallas Buyers Club,” Cate Blanchett as Best Actress for “Jasmine,” and Jared Leto as Best Supporting Actor for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Other highlights from the Academy Awards included musical performances from U2, Pharell Williams, Bette Midler, and Pink. The ceremony also had a tribute segment for famous personalities that the industry has lost in the past year including James Gondolfini, Harold Ramis, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

  • Jeff Goldblum Is Golden With Viral Laugh And New Movies

Seriously, who doesn’t love Jeff Goldblum?

With his stream-of-consciousness witterings, interview improvisations, and miscellaneous quirks, the man remains positively enigmatic into his 60’s.

That’s why they couldn’t refuse to ask him back to reclaim his role for Independence Day 2. This Jeff confirmed in a manner consistent with his unique brand of verbal hypnosis:

“Oh, good, so he’s talked about it,” he said, referring to the director. He added, “Yeah, they’ve talked to me about it and I’ve talked to them about it and they’re excited and I’m anxious and eager to see — I haven’t read anything — what they cook up. You know, I think they’re trying to put it together,”

Learning it will be released on Independence Day, 2016, made me feel old – mostly because I came across the yellowing aged ticket stub for the first one (remember when we used to voluntarily sit in large, dark, and deafening auditoriums without 3D glasses – for fun?) while cleaning the other day. That was 20 years ago, kids.

Meanwhile, in the other part of Hollywood creating 90’s sequels, nobody who’s making Jurassic Park Part Elevnty-Hundred asked Jeff to be in the upcoming production of the fourth installment, Jurassic World. Rather, Vincent D’Onofrio (also excellent at delivering a quirk-factor of his own) will be playing the villain. Moving on.

Now that you perhaps feel a bit old and maybe a little sad inside, let’s bring on the laughter.

You know that sound your dog makes when she knocks over the meal you’ve painstakingly prepared for her, and does a protest dance in the spilled remnants because she prefers what you’re eating? Well, take that noise, beam it from the chuckling talk-box of a charismatic actor like Jeff, and voila! The sound is viral voodoo on its own. Yet, some holy soul took it a step further by generating a remix imbued with this magical cacophony:

If you don’t love him enough after that, watch him play in Wes Anderson‘s latest and greatest work of art, Grand Budapest Hotel. The great thing about Anderson’s films is that you could pause it at any part, and any given frame is a masterpiece of photography with perfect symmetry. Goldblum corroborates the artistic prowess of Wes in the below interview, calling the film a “surreal, whimsical, hilarious and touching” movie that’s like a “Jungian Dreamscape”.

Of course, this was after reassuring the female anchor, “You don’t need any kind of corset! You know, you’re alive as a – as a… cat. You know, cat’s are alive…”

    Yes, Jeff. Definitely. Unequivocally. Always.

Unless, ya know, Schrödinger has a hold of said cat. Then a corset’s the least of its problems.

  • Godzilla Roars And Bryan Cranston Panics In New Movie Trailer

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Godzilla in which fans get to hear the monstrous roar and see Bryan Cranston freak out.

The movie’s second trailer debuted online on Tuesday, and shows why “Godzilla” is synonymous with destruction and mayhem. The trailer gives viewers sweeping shots of the smoldering city, a skyline covered in smoke, falling sky jumpers, a gargantuan rising tide, and people running for their lives.

The highlight of the trailer is Cranston, as scientist Joe Brody, shaking and seething amidst the widespread destruction. “It wasn’t an earthquake…What’s really happening is that you’re hiding something out there,” he accuses the government, “and it’s going to send us back to  the Stone Age!”

What did the government do now, and what are they hiding?

The trailer reveals that in 1954, the same year as the original Japanese movie, the nuclear tests being conducted by the United States military in the Pacific were not tests at all. They were actually trying to kill the monster, to no avail. The nuclear blasts just served to annoy the beast instead of inflicting damage.

It appears that the people were being told that the recent rumblings and catastrophes were caused by a typhoon, or probably an earthquake, or some other natural disaster. Brody, of course, had the gut feel that it wasn’t so, with the state of devastation he’d seen. Thus Brody’s panicked outburst.

And how could he not, when Godzilla looks to be stronger and more impenetrable than ever? Ken Watanabe, who plays a Japanese scientist, gravely says that man’s arrogance is in thinking that nature is within our control, “And not the other way around.”

Director Gareth Edwards shows viewers glimpses of the monster of all monsters, but is careful not to show Godzilla’s whole body yet. Fans will have to wait until the movie is released on May 16, but for now everyone can see Godzilla’s spiky reptilian back and his chops, bared in a horrific roar.

  • ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Landing On Earth Soon

Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy will soon leap out from print and into the big screen.

It was in 1969 when Marvel first came out with the story of a team of superheroes in an alternate universe. A reboot of the comic series in 2008 introduced a modern version of the team, which is based in the mainstream Marvel Universe. The film will be based on the 2008 team.

The main hero and head honcho of Guardians of the Galaxy is Peter Quill (superhero name: Star-Lord), who was taken from Earth when he was 9 years old and was raised in space ever since. He captains the spacecraft Milano, and has in his possession a mysterious orb, which turns out to be a powerful artifact that can blow up the galaxy into smithereens.

The other members of the team include Drax the Destroyer (unassuming human name: Arthur Douglas), who very much does what his name implies; aliens Groot and Rocket Raccoon, the indomitable tag team you’d want to have on your side at all times; and Gamora, who has “connections” to galactic bad boy Thanos.

Director James Gunn says the film will not only be about the things sci-fi geeks will find worthwhile, but will also have some elements of romance, drama, and humor thrown in. After all, even Guardians of the Galaxy have emotions and complex relationships. Quill, who did retain some of the 1980s culture within him, is definitely someone to watch.

Chris Pratt, who plays the lead role, says that Quill’s background makes for an odd mix of “youthful vibrancy and cluelessness in a childlike man.” He adds, “But he is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.”

A 20-second trailer was released on Wednesday, showing four of the film’s characters: Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel; Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt; Korath, acted out by Djimon Hounsou; and Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana. Also starring are Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro, Bradley Cooper, and Dave Bautista.

  • Matt Damon And ‘Monuments’ Cast Attend Premiere

It’s been a busy week for the cast of The Monuments Men.

From Live! With Kelly and Michael to The Late Show with David Letterman and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, stars of the film have been making the press rounds.

On Tuesday, February 4, the cast attended the New York premiere of the film at the Ziegfield Theatre.

At the premiere the cast joked around, telling stories about each other.

George Clooney – cast member, director, and writer – said of Matt Damon, “[He was] usually drunk, so we had somebody on the set all the time to make sure he stayed sober.” He later added, “I’ve done six films with him and he’s absolutely the best.”

Co-star Hugh Bonneville quipped about Clooney as a director, “It was a nightmare. I had to teach him a lot. Like when the camera’s over there, you try not to put your back to it. Things like that. The lens cap is for removal before filming starts. But he’s catching up. He’s learning, he’s sweet.”

Damon also took the time on the red carpet to talk about pal Ben Affleck’s role as Batman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman, and has even seen a photo of Affleck in the Batman suit. “I’ve seen a picture. I have seen a picture. It’s excellent. And I’ve talked to him about the story line, and it’s great,” said Damon.

While many think Affleck as Batman is a bad choice, Damon thinks otherwise. “Look, I’ve known him for thirty-something years. I’d be the first guy being like, ‘Buddy, what are you doing?’ But I think the movie is going to be great,” said Damon.

Fans of Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pleased to see Damon and other members of The Monuments Men cast as guests on the show on Thursday, February 6. Damon was last seen on Jimmy Kimmel Live when he took it over in January 2013. Kimmel is taking advantage of Damon being a guest on the upcoming episode and already taped a bit where Damon reads mean tweets about himself. One such tweet that Damon read in a deadpan voice said, “Too bad they don’t give an Oscar for blowing ass because Matt Damon would win every year. Go buy another zoo and live in it, Bourne I-d–khead. #NODISRESPECTTOBENAFFLECK”

    Ouch.

Next up the cast can be seen on Good Morning America on Friday, February 7.

The Monuments Men will hit theaters Friday, February 7, 2014 after the release date was pushed back.

  • New X-Men Images: Empire Covers Show Off Characters

    Okay, I admit it.

I am one of those people that has suffered from a “Wolverine” overdose in recent years. I respect Hugh Jackman’s interpretation of the character (especially in the very first X-Men movie). Still, I feel like the stand alone movies and X-Men 3 had disappointed me to the point where I couldn’t even be cautiously optimistic.

Now Wolverine is meant to have an important role to play in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past movie. A role that will once again put him front and center. I won’t spoil what that role is for any non-comic fans who have no idea what’s going to happen. I will say that my expectations aren’t as high as others.

However, when I saw the covers that Empire magazine began to roll out and glimpsed a take on the classic Wolverine costume, I might have gasped. And I might have become a tiny bit more excited for this film than I want to admit.

Empire has released a total of 25 covers on the movie for fans to get excited about. In addition to familiar characters such as Magneto, Mystique, and Storm, the covers feature some new faces.

Quicksilver is introduced (the first of two separate interpretations of the character). Does this mean we’ll be getting the Scarlet Witch at some point? Will the character be connected to Magneto? No idea, but what is known is that the redesign isn’t unanimously popular.

Blink is introduced to these movies as well. This is a character to keep your eye on as well. Not only does she have a part to play in this film, but with the announcement of an X-Men: Apocalypse movie, she may have an even bigger role to play in the next film, should they go the “Age of Apocalypse” route.

There are a couple of “re-introductions” as well.

The Sentinels may have been glimpsed in the Danger Room in the past, but now it looks like we’ll be seeing the infamous giant robots of X-Men lore in action.

Toad’s character has been rebooted, and even features a new actor. I have to say the goggles do make him look a bit more toad-like. It will be interesting to see what is done with this character.

There are many other covers and characters to see. Check them out and feel free to share which ones are your favorites!

  • Fifty Shades Of Grey: “Most Amazing Shock Ever”, Says Rita Ora

Fifty Shades of Grey” fans may still have to wait a bit with bated breath before their favorite piece of lusty literature finally hits the silver screen; but musical artist and actress Rita Ora certainly is tantalizing fans with her take on it already.

“It’s gonna be the biggest and most amazing shock ever,” she shared with reporters on Saturday at the annual Roc Nation pre-Grammy brunch.

Some might know Ora best for her music career. The 23 year old singer and girlfriend of DJ Calvin Harris, wouldn’t share too much about her upcoming album. She did, however, say: “It comes out in a few months,” and went on to add, “It’s been about a year and a half of kind of doing it undercover, but I can officially say it’s done. The album’s gonna be great.”

While Rita’s first love may be music, Fifty Shades isn’t her first encounter with acting. For the sixth sequel of the high-octane Fast & Furious movie series, she took on a small non-speaking part when she was cast as a racer. Now, with respect to her upcoming role in the torrid drama, it seems like she’s taking the next step in her acting career.

She admitted, “Oh, I was nervous because it was the first time I ever did a movie with words.”

Cast to play the adopted sister of Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), Rita will star in the film alongside a list of names including Eloise Mumford, Victor Rasuk, Jennifer Ehle, Max Martini, Marcia Gay Harden, Luke Grimes, and Dakota Johnson who portrays Anastasia Steele. Of her first experience delivering lines in a feature film, she said, “It was so nice. The director Sam, she was incredible, so it was all love.”

The aforementioned director of the highly anticipated Universal Pictures and Focus Features project is Sam Taylor-Wood. Sam (short for Samantha) is also an artist and has directed such films as Nowhere Boy. She was chosen to direct the adaptation of the erotic novel from a list that also included Angelina Jolie, Steven Soderbergh, Joe Wright, and Gus Van Sant.

As for the release date, it seems like there’s just as much taunting as the characters impose upon one another in the book. Mr. Grey won’t be “ready to see us” in the theaters until Valentine’s Day – of next year.

Will your “inner goddess” still be dancing by then?

  • Razzie Nominations: Adam Sandler Strikes Again

The 2014 Razzies nominations were announced on Tuesday, and once again, an Adam Sandler film leads the pack. Some moviegoers may be surprised to see that Johnny Depp made the cut for the first time ever (we know that pretty much no one thought The Lone Ranger was good, but still…Johnny Depp?). Other actors receiving Razzie nominations include Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. Some people probably didn’t realize that those two are still making movies, but it may help to know that their roles come along with “Worst Actor” designations.

Sandler’s Grown Ups 2 received eight Golden Raspberry Award nominations. As staggering as this number may be, it’s nothing compared to his Jack & Jill film from 2011. That movie was bad enough to sweep the Razzies in 2012, which is the first time any film has “won” every Razzie category.

  • Juanita Moore, Academy Nominee, Deceased at 99

One of Hollywood’s most renowned actresses has passed away.

Juanita Moore, an Academy Award Nominee, collapsed and died Wednesday January 1 at her home in Los Angeles. According to her grandson, Kirk Kelleykahn, she was 99 years of age.

Moore first got her foot in the door in the 1949 film, “Pinky.”

Some of her other respected career achievements include:

    • 1950s- Stardom at black-owned Los Angeles’ Ebony Showcase Theatre.
    • 1965- Broadway appearances in the play production of “The Amen Corner.”
    • 1973- A Motherly role in “The Mack.”
    • 2000- Her grandmother role in “The Kid.”
    • Most currently- TV appearances on “Judging Amy” and  “ER.”

However, Moore was better known for her groundbreaking performance in the 1959 film, “Imitation of Life,” making her the fifth African-American entertainer to be nominated for an Oscar.

Unlike her other films where she played a typical nurse or housemaid, Moore’s character finally opened the door for better roles in her acting career.  She has said that her role in the heartfelt film touched her more than any other character she has portrayed.

“I cried a lot in the making of this movie because it was real easy for me to cry,” she said. “I had a lot to cry about. Conditions for black actors were unbelievable back then. Very few actors got the opportunity to hone their craft in the same way white actors did.”

Yet, Moore said her recognition for the award was a little off considering the fact that she previously landed numerous roles before the nomination.

“The Oscar prestige was fine, but I worked more before I was nominated. Casting directors think an Oscar nominee is suddenly in another category. They couldn’t possibly ask you to do one or two days’ work. You wouldn’t accept it. And I’m sure I would,” Moore said.

Her legacy continues to live on through Kelleykahn, who is also an actor and the CEO of the Cambridge group.

Moore leaves behind her grandson and two nephews.

  • Mary-Louise Parker Fights for Troubled Son in “Jamesy Boy”

In a sneak-peek clip of Mary-Louise Parker’s upcoming-featured film,” Jamesy Boy,” it shows a mother who fights to keep her gang-related son in school.

Based on a true story about James Burns, portrayed by Spencer Lofranco, the film illustrates the let downs a young 14-year-old teen experienced by the school system.

The clip, however, shows a prelude to the administration’s admission rejection.

“Miss Burns, let me be frank with you. We have some concerns. We’ve read your son’s record and we’re not convinced that our school is the right place for a student with his particular history,” said the admissions officer to Parker’s character in reference to her son. (image)

The officer then goes on to elaborate on her son’s unstable violent behavior and list of convictions. She unashamedly admits that the school is afraid that Burns would be a danger to other students.

Burns ends up joining a street gang, which eventually leads to his incarceration in a maximum-security prison. However, his relationship with a convicted murderer mentors him in changing his life around. (image)

Throughout the movie, you can expect to see “…an education system resisting the wayward, failing a mother, and pushing a young person further into despair.” Other costars include James Woods, Taissa Farmiga, Taboo of Black Eyed Peas and Ving Rhames.

Directed by Trevor White, “Jamesy Boy” is set to release on Demand January 3 and premier in theaters January 17.

  • ‘Weird Science’ Star Kelly LeBrock Arrested

‘Weird Science’ Star Kelly LeBrock Arrested

Kelly LeBrock, former wife of martial arts expert Steven Seagal, as well as of Pantene shampoo’s “don’t hate because I’m beautiful” infamy, was arrested in Santa Barbara, California on November 30 for suspicion of driving under the influence.

LeBrock was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. A California Highway Patrol officer spotted LeBrock driving erratically – the actress was speeding in a 55 mph zone, repeatedly crossed the center line, and blew through a stop sign.

Prosecutors are reviewing the case, and charges have yet to be filed.

LeBrock is likely best known for her role as “Lisa” in John Hughes’ 1985 masterwork Weird Science, also starring Anthony Michael Hall, Bill Paxton and Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. Here’s the 1985 trailer:

The title song of Weird Science was written and performed by New Wave band Oingo Boingo, which featured Danny Elfman, who also scored the famous theme of The Simpsons, as well as the majority of the films of Tim Burton.

Here LeBrock displays her luxurious 1980’s coiffure, while infamously peddling Pantene hair products:

LeBrock’s line in the commercial, “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful,” drew out scores of haters, and likewise became a pop culture catchphrase at the time. During the era, the actress was typecast as an “idyllic woman” character, culminating in the sort of magical-fantasy-robot-lady-wizard-construct created by misunderstood teens in Weird Science:

  • Lebron James Is Set To Make His Film Debut

Lebron James has become quite the superpower as a player in the NBA, and even nicknamed himself “The King.” What’s next for the basketball superstar? He is planning to be the star of a new film, something that he has been planning for a number of years, but has not been able to get going until recently.

The film will not feature him in some serious dramatic role, but in fact James will star as a basketball player, something that he has plenty of experience doing. The film will be titled Ballers, and after becoming a close friend to Lebron James and other members of the Miami Heat over the past few years, Kevin Hart has been attached to the project.

Kevin Hart, the well-known stand-up comedian, and comedy actor, will be writing the script, as well as co-starring in the film with James. Hart will appear in the film as the lesser known brother of the NBA star played by Lebron James. He lives in the shadow of his superstar brother, constantly getting all of the attention. His character gets a chance to prove himself when he and some friends attend a fantasy basketball camp in Miami, hosted by James’ character.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwuM3IhsdQs

Despite being in the early stage of development, Hollywood media outlets have already been comparing the film to Twins, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito. It will be quite the pairing for the NBA star and actor, with James being 6’8, and Hart only 5’3.

The film will be a comedy about an adult fantasy basketball camp. The idea has been brewing since 2008 when he played for the Cavaliers, and has been in various stages of development since then. Lebron James, and his business partner, Maverick Carter, will serve as executive producers on the film.

Lebron James has appeared in a film once before, being the subject of a documentary called More Than A Game, focusing on his years as a high school basketball player.

The worlds of comedy and basketball will collide for the new film, and pairing Kevin Hart with Lebron James will make for quite the comedic sports film. Production on Ballers begins in the summer of 2014.

  • Henry Cavill Named Sexiest Man; Talks Affleck Choice

In a recent poll from Glamour magazine, Henry Cavill was named the Sexiest Man of 2013, winning the most votes from 95,000 readers.

For the past four years, Robert Pattinson (of Twilight fame) had won the title. One would think Pattinson would have gained more mass appeal after his break-up with Kristen Stewart, but apparently the style of the year is huge, muscle-bound, classy (but with rough, bearded appeal) men instead of sparkling vampires.

Other prominent celebrities on the list include Liam Hemsworth at number 3, Tom Hiddleston at number 4, Benedict Cumberbatch at number 5, Harry Styles at number 6, Chris Hemsworth at number 7, and Justin Beiber at number 10.

When one wins a sexiest man award, it also brings with it a new level of ethos that makes every statement one makes from that moment on more credible than it previously would have been (by the laws of sexiness). Therefore, fans should be appeased by hearing that Cavill has allayed fears that Ben Affleck will not make a proper Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel:

“I’m sure he’ll be fantastic above all else. And as a filmmaker, he’s got his own style, you know. He’s not copying anyone else. And he’s also sort of being tenacious in his career. He’s had ups followed by downs and now he’s very up again, and I think that requires and shows a very special strength of character. And it’s something which I enjoy working with because jobs like this require strength of character, they require a dedication to the work and belief in oneself. And Ben has that, clearly.”

Cavill’s comments support the vision held by the sequel’s producer, Charles Roven: “We wanted a guy who had a certain age and a certain gravitas to what he had done in terms of his recent work. If you take a look at The Town and Argo, he plays a couple of serious guys in those movies. He’s a big man. He’s also a mature man. As you see him and Henry together, one definitely has much more experience just by looking at him. That’s what we wanted, particularly juxtaposed against our Superman.”

Not only did Cavill opine about the choice of Affleck as the next Batman, but he also spoke on looking forward to working with Affleck’s version of Batman on stage: “The next instalment, as we all know, is involving another rather important character, and i’m looking very forward to that interaction, because ultimately they’re two sides of the same coin. How they interact, how they clash and how they ultimately aim towards the same goal is going to be an interesting relationship, and I look forward to playing that with Ben especially.”

While not much information has been released concerning the Zack Snyder directed Batman vs. Superman flick, Roven’s vision coupled with Cavill’s and Affleck’s attitudes toward the project should make one excited. Even if one has some skepticism left in them, at least this clash of comic book titans paves the way for a Justice League movie, something we have all been itching to see since the success of The Avengers franchise.

  • Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon’s Daughter, Sosie, Named Miss Golden Globe 2014

On Thursday evening, The Golden Globe held its 71st ceremony at the West Hollywood Restaurant Fig and Olive, in which Miss Golden Globe 2014 was awarded to a special honoree.

Sosie Bacon, the daughter of Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, was the recipient of the role.

Sosie’s father was infamous for his role in the 1984 film, “Foot Loose,” making him a very admired pop-culture icon. However, Sedgwick is currently the star of “The Closer,” which won her an Emmy award as the best lead actress in a drama series.

“As we all know, she comes from a very talented family and this gets us one degree closer to Kevin Bacon,” said HFPA President Theo Kingma.

Sedgwick went on Twitter Thursday to express her excitement for her daughter.

Every year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association crowns the son and daughter of well-known celebrities for a special duty. Those selected assist in handing out awards.

This year’s Mr. Golden Globe, Sam, is the son of Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan. He will be standing alongside Sosie in the ceremony events.

According to Sosie, the nomination process consists of a simple interview.

“They just ask if you want to do it and then I met with the [Hollywood Foreign Press Association]. We had a nice meeting — they asked me some questions about myself, like a job interview, sorta. Pretty painless,” Bacon said in a Q&A with the Hollywood Reporter.

In a statement to Fox News, the 21-year-old aspiring actress expressed her humble acceptance.

“As a young actress who is just beginning my career, it is truly an honor to be a part of such a special night in film and television,” she said.

Sosie has been featured in movies and TV series with her parents such as playing the niece of her mother in “The Closer.”

Last year’s honoree was the daughter of Clint Eastwood and Frances Fisher, Francesca Eastwood.

The ceremony will air January 12 on NBC at 8 p.m.

  • 12 Years A Slave: Will It Win Best Picture For 2013?

“12 Years A Slave” has come with a bang, and is receiving rave reviews online. Indeed, Vulture movies editor Kyle Buchanan has already awarded “12 Years A Slave” this year’s Best Picture trophy in his review. Already, the film has won the top award at the Toronto Film Festival. “Suspend the betting, close the books and notify the engraver,” wrote Kyle Buchanan after the film’s first Toronto screening, on Sept. 7. “I’ve just seen what will surely be this year’s Best Picture winner.”

However, in September Steve Pond, The Wrap’s  Awards expert, thought that “12 Years A Slave” still had a long way to go because “the Oscar race is a marathon, not a sprint.”

“It will likely win a number of critics’ awards, and it will be impossible for any serious voter to ignore when Oscar ballots become available in December. But does that make it an automatic winner? Not now. Not yet.” Says Steve Pond.  There are certainly valid points for and against the “12 Years A Slave” winning the grand trophy, but until then, we are better off concentration on the content of the masterpiece.

Well, it’s now mid November and the film seems more like a shoo-in for The Academy’s Best Picture Award, but of course we have to wait and see.

“12 Years A Slave” has been heralded as very emotional and a true picture of what it was like to be a slave in pre-civil war America. The film features Chiwetel Ejiofor acting as a free black man from New York who gets abducted and sold into slavery. The story, which moved Oprah Winfrey into tears while discussing it, is based on a true story of a man named Solomon Northup. Northup compiled his autobiography which was published in 1853, although many thought that it was fiction.

12 Years a Slave was released in the US on October 13th and has been called a must-see by critics.

  • “Roots” Remake in the Works with History Network

The historically ground-breaking television mini-series may be making its way back to cable television. However, it won’t be the classic 1977 version, based on Alex Haley’s original screenplay. Like most notable films, “Roots” has been selected for a remake.

According to CBS News, the History network announced on Tuesday that a deal had been reached with film producer, Mark Wolper to acquire rights to remake the film. For those who aren’t familiar with Wolper’s work, he actually produced, the film sequel, “Roots: The Gift,” back in 1988. The notable producer has a history with executive production of television movies, series, documentaries, and mini-series. Wolper’s father, David, is also credited as the producer of the original “Roots” mini-series. The project is still in the early developmental stages, which means there is still a substantial chance that it won’t make it to production.

The original production of “Roots” captured the grueling generational oppression of a slave family. The film chronicled more than 300 years of the family’s lineage. “Roots” garnered 37 Emmy Award nominations, and nine wins. The film also received a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award.

The History network has been relatively successful with their latest mini-series releases. The network is also responsible for the full-length dramatization of “Hatfields & McCoys,” with Kevin Costner, and the 10-hour mini-series of “The Bible.” The History network received a number of laudable accolades for the production of “The Bible.” The film attracted an average of approximately 11 million viewers, and received three Emmy nominations.

While great strides will be required to top the staggering 100 million viewers that the original series received, the network definitely has a reputation of delivering where mini-series are concerned. If their “Roots” remake is anything comparable to their recent productions, then fans can expect the new mini-series to be a modernized masterpiece. If everything goes according to plan, the film should be slated for a 2015 release.

  • Idris Elba to Attend White House Screening for “Mandela”

Famed actor Idris Elba has definitely had a lot on his plate lately. With two films in post-production, one currently filming, and another two in pre-production, it’s safe to say he’s a busy man. However, there’s yet another film in particular that has caught a vast amount of media attention – “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” Elba stars in the Justin Chadwick-directed film as none other than Nelson Mandela, himself. The biopic, which is based on the 1994 autobiography of Mandela, chronicles the South African politician’s life.

The film starts with Mandela’s humble beginnings in a rural African village to his most memorable moments of triumph, being elected as the first official president of South Africa. While preparing for the initial screening of the film in Johannesburg, Elba was slowed down by a health scare, due to complications of asthma. The “Prometheus” actor suffered a severe asthma attack, while in route to South Africa. Due to the severity of the attack, he was taken off the plan and rushed to the hospital. He ended up missing the Johannesburg press conference as a result of his hospitalization. However, the minor setback didn’t stop him.

In fact, according to the Guardian, Elba ended up catching another plane out of Heathrow International Airport, arriving ‘just in time’ for the premiere. The British actor was lauded for his performance, receiving Mandela’s approval and high regards from many of his close family members who also attended the private screening. But the pre-screening praises won’t stop here.

While the Johannesburg screening was first priority on the screening list, it’s definitely not the only one, as there will be two others in the coming weeks. In addition to the pre-screening in South Africa, the film will also be shown at another prestigious location – the White House. The film’s distributor, the Weinstein Company, stated that President Obama will screen the film on Thursday. Mandela’s two daughters, Zindi and Zenani, and Elba, along with his co-star Naomie Harris, will all be in attendance for the prestigious event. Former president, Bill Clinton, will also host a screening for the film, Nov. 20 at the Kennedy Center.

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” is tentatively scheduled for international release on Nov. 29, 2013.

  • The Heavenly Sword Movie Gets A Debut Trailer

Remember Heavenly Sword? The PS3 launch window title was often called “Goddess of War” and for good reason. It was about as close as we were going to get to a God of War game on the PS3 until Sony Santa Monica released God of War III in 2010. Now the game is getting a film adaptation, and the first trailer has just been released.

In the debut trailer for the Heavenly Sword movie, we’re introduced to the basic premise of the game. Nariko must fight against an invading kingdom by wielding a weapon known as the Heavenly Sword. The sword is cursed, however, and wielding it will doom her to a fate worse than death. As you can already tell, it’s quite pleasant.

As the trailer notes, Anna Torv is reprising her role as the voice of Nariko, but she appears to be the only returning cast member from the game. The main antagonist, King Bohan, was originally voiced and mo-capped by Andy Serkis, but Alfred Molina will be taking over the role in the film.

Unlike the upcoming Ratchet & Clank feature film, the Heavenly Sword film adaptation will be a direct-to-video effort. In other words, fans of the game should probably keep their expectations in check.

The Heavenly Sword film adaptation is on track to hit DVD and Blu-ray at some point this year.

  • Entourage Movie: Get Ready Fans, It’s Official!

The Entourage movie has finally been made official after years of delay, and speculation about the fate of the film. Members of the cast and director, Doug Ellin continued to tweet about the fate of the film recently, until yesterday when it was finally revealed that it would be made.

Entourage was a very popular television show that aired on HBO from 2004-2011. After the show’s finale, an Entourage movie was rumored to be made almost as soon as the show’s emotional end. The film was originally green-lit in January, but has been delayed several times since.

The show featured Adrian Grenier as the star of the show, Vincent Chase, a Hollywood actor. He is joined by his “entourage” of Eric, Turtle, and Johnny “Drama” Chase, his brother. The crew all originated from New York, and came to Hollywood where they meet Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), and the show focused on the ups and downs of Chase’s career.

The Entourage movie’s original announcement came from Jerry Ferrara, who played Turtle on the show, and it came in the form of a tweet. Earlier in the day, he also appeared on the Wendy Williams show in order to promote his new film Last Vegas, when of course, he was also pressed on the fate of the Entourage movie. On the show, he told Williams “It’s looking good. It’s looking real good. It could be closed today.”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2iFnsXJLcw

There has been much controversy over the film, and the reasons for it being delayed. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the reason for the delay was because of Jeremy PIven’s high paycheck, and his co-stars wanted a similar deal to Piven’s.

Despite those reports, Ferrara claimed that the problems have just been due to scheduling, and that he would be happy to do it for free. He went on to mention that they hope to start shooting in January, and in fact, the Entourage movie needs to start shooting by January 2014 in order to be eligible for the California tax credit, which Warner Bros. has made a condition of the film being made.

Adrian Grenier aslo humorously posted this fake driver’s license on both his Facebook and Twitter.

When fans last saw the Entourage gang, many people probably remember an emotional finale with everyone seeming to go separate ways, at least temporarily. Eric finally proposed to Sloan, Vince was off to work on a new film, Turtle was making more moves as a businessman, and Johnny was even starting to see a bit of success, with Ari becoming the head of his own studio.

Perhaps the most important tweets of the night came from Doug Ellin, who in one tweet, even responded to NBA star Kevin Durant saying that this is arguably the best day of his life.

The Entourage movie will pick up six month after the series’ finale, with Ari being featured as a powerful head of a studio. Well, the emotional roller-coaster for fans is finally over, and we can all rest assured knowing that the film will begin shooting in a matter of months.

  • ’12 Years A Slave’ Depicts Unspeakable Horrors

To hear about the brutality of slavery is one thing, but to witness the events through a firsthand narrative is an entirely different horror and matter altogether. Director Steve McQueen, who also co-wrote the script for the film with John Ridley, has brought the real-life devastation of slavery to light in such a personal perspective through the latest masterpiece, 12 Years A Slave.

The movie is based on a novel by the same name and focuses on the true events that happened to Solomon Northup in 1841. The movie stars a compilation of recognizable talent including: Chiwetel Ejiofor who is the movie’s main star, Paul Giamatti, Brad Pitt, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, and Afre Woodard. The performances are so moving, so gripping, and so heart-breaking that there are already rumblings of potential Oscar nominations.

Moviegoers have been notably touched by the strong, intimate portrayal of a free man, Solomon Northup, who personally fights to maintain his spirit through the violent tortures unwittingly imposed on him after he is kidnapped from his home streets of Washington and sold into slavery. While Steve McQueen shows the full breadth of actual beatings and physical pain inflicted during that period of history, his movie is most heart-wrenching for showing that the people suffered without hope.
