Woman Grows Beard To Raise “Movember” Money

Siobhain Fletcher, a 36-year old woman from England, has grown a beard in order to raise money for prostate cancer awareness while taking part in “Movember”, an event which has increased in popularity around the world this month as men grow out their facial hair.

Fletcher says she was diagnosed with a disorder–polycystic ovary syndrome–when she was in her twenties, but had noticed the symptoms when she hit puberty. The disorder causes her to grow thick facial hair, and Fletcher says that after trying several methods to remove the hair which turned out to be both costly and painful, she made the decision to let it grow out for a good cause.

“It helps people get checked for prostate and testicular cancer, and hopefully people will, instead of going to a funeral, be going to a remission party,” she said.

Fletcher now has a profile set up on the UK site for Movember and says people are surprisingly supportive.

“To actually go out there, and get out there, you see people still have manners. People may look, but mostly it’s been very positive,” she said. “I think only one negative comment on the whole of the Internet.”

To date, Fletcher has raised over $1600 for prostate cancer, but she says taking part in the event could have an unexpected side effect.

“My condition used to contribute to depression and anxiety but this is for a good cause and I want to highlight that people shouldn’t judge you on what you have on your face, it’s what is inside that matters,” Fletcher said.

  • Nick Offerman Helps You Battle the Movember Moustache Blues

Growing a manly moustache is not for the weak-willed or the faint of heart. A full, robust stache only comes natural to a select few – most of us have to wade through trying times of thin, sparse, in-between staches when it seems like the best thing would be to give up. Nick Offerman knows your pain. Well, not personally – his moustache is fantastic. But he does know of your pain, and he has a message for you:

    It gets fuller.

It’s still November, which means it’s still Movember to those participating. Movember asks men to grow out their moustaches and women to support their men in order to raise awareness (and funds) for men’s health initiatives. If you haven’t started participating in Movember, it’s not too late.

Check out Nick Offerman’s take on the famous “It Gets Better” campaign below:

This is the second time Offerman has teamed up with MadeMan to promote moustache awareness. You can check out his previous turn here.

  • Nick Offerman Gives Tips on Growing a Movember Moustache [VIDEO]

Nick Offerman is known for his manly activites, both on and off the screen. His now-iconic character Ron Swanson from NBC’s Parks and Recreation loves bacon and outdoor activities, and the real life Offerman is a talented woodworker (who also enjoys bacon, I’m sure).

So who better to lead us all through the manliest of months, Movember.

Movember was founded in Melbourne, Australia a decade ago and tasks men to grow fine moustaches in support of men’s health initiatives, including prostate and testicular cancer awareness. Movember men (known as Mo Bros) can register to be a part of the initiative on movember.com. To this date, over 854,000 Mo Bros (and Mo Sistas, their female supporters) have generated $126.3 million for the cause.

In honor of the month, Nick Offerman wants to give every man tips on growing a proper ‘stache. He knows not every man will be able to achieve the elegance that his moustache achieved through years of training and maintenance – but hey, they can try.

Today, we learned the Google is once again supporting Movember as well.

  • Google Celebrates Movember Again, This Time With A Chrome Video

Remember last year when Google’s Matt Cutts and Bing’s Duane Forrester grew moustaches? That was for Movember, a decade-old campaign to draw awareness to men’s health started in Australia.

This year, ahead of November, Google has released a new Chrome video celebrating the campaign.

“For ten years, Movember has been changing the face of men’s health,” says Gabriella Conlon from Google’s Chrome marketing team. “Movember has grown from humble beginnings with a couple of blokes having a beer and deciding that it was important to raise universal awareness for men’s health. The movement took off across the globe as photos and support were shared over the web.”

“At Google, we have been inspired that a group of motivated Aussie guys could spark global change — and have such fun doing it along the way,” says Conlon. “So we’ve chosen to celebrate this story in our new Chrome video.”

We haven’t heard yet if Cutts and Forrester will be going the moustache route again this year.

  • Movember Keeps On Moving

    Movember Keeps On Moving

In the penultimate day of Movember‘s month-long mission against prostate cancer, Google has released a new video to highlight the success of the movement. The video has enlisted a cast of international supporters offering testimonials (as well as several impressive ‘staches) from participants.

As the month comes to an end, supporters have begun to rally on Twitter by posting pics of their month’s harvest of facial hair, make plans to celebrate the success of the fundraising and encourage supporters to make a donation in the final hours of Movemeber.
