  • Moms Online: 75% on Facebook, 4.9M on Pinterest, and 1 in 3 Blog

Whether its by blog or by Pinterest, by now it’s a recognized fact that women are the driving force behind much of the internet. Ahead of this Sunday’s annual observance of the difficult and often under-appreciated labor women endure to raise their progeny, Mother’s Day, now is as good of a time as ever to take a moment to see just how mothers are occupying their time on the internet.

A study from NM Incite earlier this year revealed that 1 in 3 bloggers are mothers and in general moms are more likely to visit blogs. While women make up the majority of Facebook users, nearly 3 out of 4 moms visited Facebook in March. And yes, to perpetuate the misguided assumption that Pinterest is only for women, 61% of mothers are more likely to visit the site than the average American. What can I say, moms know a well-designed site when they see one.

Internet savvy moms are on the go a lot, too, as 50% of them access social media via mobile devices and more than 54% of les mères own a smartphone.

So what does this all look like? I’m glad you asked, because Nielsen knew you would ask and so it compiled an infographic that details what the moms of America are up to in their online lives. Happy (early) Mother’s Day, ladies, and don’t stop until you get enough internet.

  • Half of Moms Friending Their Kids on Facebook

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, which means that sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, and husbands everywhere will spend at least a little while trying to figure out how to make mom happy. A new survey from Crowd Science suggests that although you still might not want to buy her that brand-new gadget that just hit the shelves, sharing a nice status about her on Facebook is likely to get her approval.

That’s because your mom is on Facebook. In fact, half of the moms on Facebook have even friended their kids. Not only that, but nearly 80% of moms reported sharing photos, videos, and links online. Face it guys, your mother is becoming a little more social media savvy.

And all I can say is good – maybe that will save my email inbox from the forwarding deluge of yore.

Sandra Marshall of Crowd Science says that Facebook (and other social channels) are just modern ways for mothers to do what they have wanted to do for centuries: stay in contact.

“It’s no surprise in the age of social media, that 79% of moms share content like videos, photos and links with friends and family online, but the fact that they use digital channels to stay connected with their kids is very telling,” says VP of research Marshall. “Moms today are no different than in the past. They just want to stay connected with the people that matter to them most: their kids.”

So this Mother’s Day, give your mom the most special gift of all: stop ignoring her friend request. If you don’t want her to know about your borderline-scary affinity for Jack Daniels, fine. Tweak your privacy settings. And since when know that moms love sharing links, if you don’t want to see them, just turn down her volume in your news feed.

  • Skype Offering Mother’s Day Video Cards

Mother’s Day will be here before you know it. The annual holiday is a chance for us to show our mothers how much we appreciate them. Some people buy flowers or chocolates. They might even give their mother a “coupon” for chores that she would normally do. I was always partial to “I’m poor so here’s a hug” gift. Unfortunately, Skype is making that hard for me to do this year.

Skype announced today that they are now offering a “Say it with Skype” Mother’s Day edition video card. “Say it with Skype” is a service that allows people to wish well greetings and happy birthday to their friends and significant others via the video service.

The Mother’s Day promotion has the user going on Facebook and creating a music video with one of three bands in a “Mom, You Rock” styled concert. You can add your own performance alongside the band of choice to make you look extra goofy.

The reason behind this initiative goes beyond just wanting to wish your mother well. They found that more and more mothers will be using Skype and other video or voice call services to keep in touch with their loved ones this year. This is because more than half of mothers won’t be around their loved ones in person this year.

If you need more reasons to wish your mother well on May 13, Skype is throwing charity into the mix. For every Mother’s Day card that is sent via Skype between now and May 14, the company will donate $1 to the Save The Children’s Global Action Fund to help children who may not have a mother to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to.

If you want to send your mother a greeting this year, just hit up Skype’s “Say it with Skype” page. You can start crafting your own special Mother’s Day message now. Here’s hoping that this doesn’t devalue the “Free hug” gift anymore than it already has. It’s all I have to give!

  • Mother’s Day In UK celebrated This Weekend

Mother’s Day In UK celebrated This Weekend

Unlike here in the states, where moms are given a special day in May, the UK celebrates Mother’s Day on the fourth Sunday in the month of Lent to honor the Virgin Mary. Since the days of Lent change every year, Mother’s Day is not a fixed date in the UK, and this leads to forgetfulness regarding the holiday. This year it falls on Sunday, March 18th, which just happens to be this weekend. Twitter users have been helpfully reminding each other, lest they be subject to their mum’s guilt wrath.

UK folks – whatever you do, don’t forget it’s Mother’s day this weekend! http://t.co/Y13fjnqC(image) 2 hours ago via HootSuite ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The day has deep roots, going back to at least the 1600’s. In those days, the poor used to send their children to work as domestic servants in the homes of the wealthy. Once a year, these children were given leave for a day to visit their Mother Church as well as their own mother. The day coincided with the middle Sunday during the fasting period of Lent, and since then it has become a tradition to honor one’s mother on that day. Children would present their mothers with flowers and the traditional fasting rules of Lent were relaxed a bit, prompting the nickname “Pudding Pie Day”.

Popular gifts may change from year to year, but flowers are always in demand for the holiday and reportedly ranked highest last year, even over cards. For those last-minute shoppers, there are sites which feature free greeting cards which can be sent via email to mom as well as some that offer free delivery of personalized gifts.

Of course, these days companies are using social media tools to help make sales. Twitter was buzzing today with posts about Mother’s Day UK, from promos and giveaways–which range from theater tickets to chocolate baskets–to gift ideas. It seems everyone is trying to make sure that moms are not forgotten this weekend.

  • Twitter Promotes Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, April 8th. Twitter is promoting an interesting gift you can give her – the gift of social media.

    From the Twitter blog:

When you’re hanging with your mom this Mother’s Day, try teaching her a thing or two about Twitter…moms on Twitter are like moms in real life: fun, funny, caring, adorable and engaging. It’ll bring you closer and provide some laughs as well.

Twitter also prepares you for the resistance that may arise from your mother when you suggest she creates a Twitter account – statements like “But I don’t have anything to say” and “I don’t care about [following] celebrities.” They say to tell her that Twitter is an easy way for her to check up on you and that of course she wants to follow celebs, Martha Stewart is on Twitter!

I love my mother, but I doubt those would be the roadblocks we would run into. Ours would be more like “People are going to steal my identity,” or “I’d love to, but my son didn’t get the hint and buy me a new computer last Christmas.” Perhaps “What’s the internet?”

Psst, there’s a secret ending in this video. http://t.co/oCS7wA2 Hint: @ConanOBrien gets emotional.#MyMomTweets 21 hours ago via Twitter for Mac · powered by @socialditto

Twitter is promoting the hashtag #MyMomTweets to promote mothers on Twitter, but it is a morphed version of that hashtag that is trending currently. #mamasays is the hot hashtag right now, and besides the obligatory #mamasays knock u out, here is my favorite that I’ve seen. Good one, Mitch.

#MamaSays That You Tha Devil! 5 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

I can only imagine the Twitterverse using this and #MyMomTweets for nefarious purposes, however. Just imagine, combine an @ mention with #mamasays and the perfect mom jokes are born on Twitter.

But I am a pessimist. Mom awareness on Twitter could be a good thing. Seriously, with all the incessant crap that people tweet about, tweets with sound motherly advice or tributes to wonderful moms are quite welcome. Plus, at least in my family, teaching the parents about anything tech related is a win for all.

Just don’t think that explaining Twitter to her counts as her present. You still have to get her flowers, guys.

  • Mothers Day Gift? Target Offers $150 Off on iPhone 4

Mothers Day Gift? Target Offers $150 Off on iPhone 4

Target is sending out emails today encouraging customers to buy an iPhone 4 for their mothers for Mothers Day (this Sunday, in case you didn’t know). They’re calling it the gift “she’ll use every day.”

If you’re on the frugal side, they’ll even let you trade in your own iPhone 3GS or 3G to knock off $150.

Mothers Day Gift - iPhone 4 from Target?

Note that this is at “select” Target stores. It doesn’t appear that they even sell the iPhone 4 on their site (though they do provide a variety of accessories). It’s unclear whether the new White model is available as an option.

Back in November, Target announced it would carry the iPhone in 846 stores – those that include Target Mobile Centers.

If you do buy your mom an iPhone for Mothers Day, you might also want to make sure she’s aware of the whole location tracking thing that’s been in the news that last couple weeks. It couldn’t hurt.
