Salesforce Looks At The State Of Sales

Salesforce just released its 2015 State of Sales Report looking at industry trends after surveying over 2,300 sales leaders around the world. It looks at priorities, behaviors, and technology in use by sales teams and finds that the best performing teams are more likely to maximize technology, especially when it comes to analytics and mobile.

“Technology is rapidly becoming the difference between big quarters and big misses,” said Mike Rosenbaum, executive vice president of Sales Cloud at Salesforce. “The companies who deliver strong sales results not only use modern CRM platforms to gain critical insight into all the customer touchpoints, but are also deploying newer technologies like sales analytics to sell smarter and mobile to respond anytime, anywhere.”

The report finds that high-performing sales teams are three and a half times more likely to use sales analytics than under-performing teams, and predictive analytics represents “the next phase of analytics innovation.” 19% of those polled are currently using predictive analytics, but Salesforce expects adoption to grow by 135% over the next twelve to eighteen months.

High-performing sales teams are more than twice as likely to be “heavy tech adopters” than moderate and under-performing teams. Technology accelerates sales processes three times more often for high-performers than for under-performers, it finds.

“Mobile is becoming a key accelerator for sales,” the company says. “Inspired by consumer adoption, mobile devices and apps are now becoming mainstream for business users,” Today’s highest performing sales reps use mobile apps for everything from lead management to sales forecasting.”

According to the report, the top sales organizations are about five times more likely to rate their mobile sales capabilities as “outstanding” or “very good,” and 60% of the high-performing teams currently use or are planning to use a mobile sales app. Among those surveyed, mobile sales app use will more than double in the next two years. Over half currently deliver or plan to deliver sales directly via a mobile app in the next two years. A surprising 83% of all sales teams are currently using or planning to use wearables in some form in the next two years.

“Sales success now begins with a collaborative culture,” Salesforce says. “Creating a culture where sales is the collective responsibility of the entire organization is critical to success. In many cases, that means breaking down silos and unifying sales and marketing processes to get a complete view of the customer.”

Those with high-performing sales teams are three times as likely to view sales as the responsibility of the entire company. These high-performing teams also largely (93%) rate employee satisfaction as very important.

You can find the full report here.

Earlier this week, we looked at another report for the company which examined CPMs across leading social platforms.

  • Salesforce Unveils ‘Wave Analytics’ Application

    Salesforce Unveils ‘Wave Analytics’ Application

Back in October, Salesforce announced Wave, the Salesforce Analytics Cloud, marking the company’s entry into the $38 billion analytics market. On Thursday, it unveiled its first Wave Analytics App, Sales Wave Analytics.

Sales Wave Analytics marks the inaugural app for the Wave Analytics Apps line of apps, more of which will come later. Sales Wave Analytics will provide sales teams with personalized templates, historical analysis, and the ability to take immediate actions.

“Until today, analytics were not built for everyone,” said Alex Dayon, president of products, Salesforce. “We are changing the game by combining intuitive analytics with business processes in Wave Analytics Apps, so every business user can not only see performance in real-time, but also take actions directly within the apps.”

The templates in Sales Wave Analytics are called Sales Wave Accelerator Templates, and let you browse all Salesforce sales data, including things like pipeline management, forecasting, quarterly business reviews, team performance, etc.

    salesforce wave analytics

“For example, a sales operations executive will be able to instantly conduct a real-time pipeline analysis and cross reference it with product sales performance from their mobile phone to determine whether they need to reset forecasts or identify which deals need to be accelerated to hit key targets,” the company explains.

With the historical analysis feature, sales leaders will be able to surface historical metrics quickly from any device. Salesforce says they’ll be able to “organically explore every facet” of the team’s historical performance to discover trends and potential investment areas.

With Sales Waves Actions, teams can create new tasks, change close dates, and engage with people from within the app.

    Salesforce tasks

Sales Wave Analytics is in pilot mode for the time being. Only select customers can access it, but it’s expected to be generally available in English later this year. Additional language support will be added in time.

The app will be available on a per user per month subscription model, but the pricing won’t be announced until it becomes generally available.

The app will be available on iOS at first with additional device support (presumably Android) later.

  • Apple Watch Pre-orders Nearly Hit a Million on Launch Day

Apple Watch Pre-orders Nearly Hit a Million on Launch Day

Hours after Apple opened up pre-orders on its new wearable device, the Apple Watch, the product sold out. Shipping times slipped from the original target of April 24 to 4-6 weeks out, and even longer in some cases.

Of course, Apple doesn’t tell us how much supply it had to begin with, so selling out doesn’t necessarily mean a stellar product launch. Nearly every product Apple puts out sells out within hours. It’s nothing new.

But now, data from analytics firm Slice Intelligence provides us with a more concrete look at the first day of sales.

According to Slice, about 957,000 people preordered an Apple Watch on Friday. The average Watch buyer pre-ordered 1.3 watches, and spent $503.83 per watch. Most people went for the less-expensive Sport version – 62 percent in fact.

Slice has some more info on the most popular styles:

The most popular type of case is the Space Gray aluminum case, with 40 percent of Apple Watch buyers choosing the option, followed by: stainless steel at 34 percent, silver aluminum at 23 percent and finally Space Black stainless steel at three percent.

The Black Sport Band was by far the most popular among both Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport buyers, with 49 percent overall pre-ordering one, followed by the White Sport Band at 16 percent and the more expensive Milanese Loop ($149 versus $49 for the black Sport band) rounding out the top three at around 10 percent.

Early reviews of the Apple Watch have been mostly good, but if you want to see a giant list of everything wrong with Apple’s new device, check here.

  • Cyber Monday Sales Not Much Higher Than Last Year

Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year, and for good reason. Not only do retailers heavily discount goods, but many also offer free shipping. That’s why Cyber Monday sales growth has been steady for the past few years, but it may finally be showing signs of slowing down.

ABC News reports that Cyber Monday sales are up by only 8.1 percent this year over last. It’s a significant decrease compared to last year when sales rose by over 20 percent compared to Black Friday 2012. When retailers are looking for increased growth, the numbers seen today aren’t looking so good.

Of course, there are a number of factors to consider when looking at online shopping this year. First, the results being reported don’t represent all the shopping taking place today. After all, there are some people who will do their Cyber Monday shopping at night and that may increase the total haul for this year. The more important factor, however, is that many online retailers are holding Cyber Monday week or month events. In other words, shoppers have already been treated to Cyber Monday deals for the past week so there’s less reason to shop today.

Speaking of which, analysts are saying that retailers may be offering subpar deals compared to past years. The feeling is that retailers know people are going to show up anyway so why try to attract their attention with amazing deals. After all, just simply saying something is on sale is usually enough to entice shoppers even if the sale price isn’t much lower than the retail price.

If you’re in the market for Cyber Monday deals, you can still get your hands on discounted goods before some sales end tonight at midnight. It’s good to remember, however, that some sales will be going for the rest of the week or month. As we approach Christmas, expect to see some crazy deals as retailers look to clear stock.

Oh, and if you find yourself in the giving mood tomorrow after treating yourself to cheap movies, video games and computers, the White House has an idea:

  • iPads On Sale, Other Apple Products Discounted For Cyber Monday

Apple’s iPad is going to be a hot holiday item, but the price may be a little prohibitive for some shoppers. There were some decent deals on Black Friday, but Cyber Monday presents the best deals there are on tech gifts.

BGR reports that MacMall is holding a big Cyber Monday sale today with multiple Apple products, including the iPad Air, being sold at a discount. First up is a 32GB iPad Air for $434 – $15 off the regular price. If you want something a little more cutting edge, the 64GB iPad Air 2 is going for $575 – $24 off the regular price. While the discounts don’t seem that significant at first, MacMall regularly undercuts Apple on their retail prices. In other words, further discounts mean that shoppers can get the iPad Air for much cheaper than Apple’s own prices.

If you’re not into the iPad, MacMall has other Apple products on sale as well. For example, the 13.3 inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display goes for $1,029 – $269 off the regular price. For something a little lighter, the 13.3 inch iPad Air can be yours for $929 – $69 off the regular price. Finally, the 27 inch iMac with 5K Display is going for $2,399 – $100 off the regular price.

Outside of Apple products, MacMall has some fantastic deals on storage and hardware going on today as well:

For more Cyber Monday deals, check out our coverage of the sequel to Black Friday.

  • Cyber Monday Sales: Best Deals On Video Games

Cyber Monday is like the rushed sequel to Black Friday. That doesn’t make it any worse than America’s annual celebration of cheap TVs and trampling old people though. In fact, it might even be the superior holiday since you don’t have to brave the elements or that jerk down the block to score cheap goods.

We’ve already previewed a few of the Cyber Monday deals coming from major retailers, but the video game fans out there are going to want to pay attention to this year’s Cyber Monday. For starters, Amazon is hosting a week of Cyber Monday sales starting today. One of the standout deals is half-off Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor for Xbox One and PS4. For only $30, you too can explore the vastness of Mordor while making enemies out of every orc you let live. Other notable deals on Amazon include Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition on PS4 for $18 or the recently released Lords of the Fallen for $40.

For more deals, be sure to check out Amazon’s landing page for Cyber Monday. There will be new sales all week as the world’s largest online retailer attempts to siphon money out of gamers across the country.

What about GameStop? Does the nation’s largest games specialty retailer have any good Cyber Monday sales in mind? While the retailer has yet to send out its annual Cyber Monday ad, it has already lowered the prices on the games that will be seeing discounts come December 1. Of particular note is recently released The Evil Within – the $60 PS4/Xbox One title has seen its price slashed in half for Cyber Monday.

If you’re in the market for some last gen consoles, GameStop has you covered with some rather generous bundles. For starters is the Wii Holiday Blast from the Past bundle that throws in a Nintendo Wii and five games – New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Wii Sports, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga and Just Dance 2. The bundle retails for only $90 on Monday.

If the Wii is a little too underpowered for you, GameStop is also offering a first gen Xbox 360 with a 60GB hard drive for $99. To make the deal even sweeter, the bundle throws in a free copy of last year’s excellent Tomb Raider reboot.

Best Buy’s Cyber Monday sales are a little more disappointing. The best deal available is the Destiny White PS4 bundle for $419. It’s safe to assume that most of those bundles were picked up at better prices on Black Friday so it’s probably not worth the $30 unless you really want Destiny and a PS4.

Last but not least, PC gamers still have the Steam Exploration Sale that lasts until Tuesday. We won’t know what Cyber Monday deals are in store for us until 9 a.m. PST tomorrow, but there’s likely to be some good deals. In fact, there are already over 5,000 titles on sale right now.

Like all Cyber Monday deals, we may not be seeing the full picture until the namesake day rolls around at Midnight. Be sure to keep checking back at your favorite online retailer all day on Monday to see if the game you want for Christmas goes on sale.

  • LinkedIn Sales Navigator Hits iOS [Updated]

LinkedIn Sales Navigator Hits iOS [Updated]

Update: A LinkedIn spokesperson has informed us that the app went up prematurely, and that the company is still in the process of finalizing some of its functionality. They’ve removed the app, and plan on making it available in the next few weeks.

LinkedIn recently unveiled a big redesign of its Sales Navigator tool on the web, promising mobile apps in the future. The future is now for iOS users. The app is now available in the App Store.

    Here’s the app description:

Keep up with your accounts and leads with LinkedIn Sales Navigator – now on your iPhone.

Whether you’re waiting for a meeting, travelling between clients’ offices, or just in line for a latte, Sales Navigator Mobile gives you access to Sales Navigator’s key features where you need them most: everywhere.

  • LinkedIn Sales Navigator Gets Big Refresh

LinkedIn Sales Navigator Gets Big Refresh

LinkedIn announced the launch of a major refresh to its Sales Navigator tool in the middle of its Q2 earnings report on Thursday. It’s described as an “enterprise-focused SaaS product.

On the company’s earnings call, CEO Jeff Weiner had this to say about it: “This new SaaS product delivers a customized view into LinkedIn to better connect sales professionals with the right buyers by leveraging key insights and connections across the LinkedIn network. Our research shows that social selling transforms the sales process — buyers are over five times more likely to engage with sales professionals when introduced through a common connection versus a cold call. Just as the launch of our flagship Recruiter product transformed the way talent professionals recruit, we expect Sales Navigator will similarly transform the effectiveness of sales professionals.”

The company put a post up on its Sales Solutions Blog discussing the offering further. LinkedIn’s Mike Derezin explains:

Here’s what’s different. Users of the original Sales Navigator conducted their social selling efforts through their LinkedIn member experience. The updated version of Sales Navigator is a completely standalone experience — with a separate login — that brings comprehensive information directly to the salesperson. Many features like lead recommendation by account, news mentions, and account recommendation are being made available for the first time.

Additionally, finding other important insights in the original Sales Navigator required complex manual searches, which is hard to scale if a salesperson is managing more than a few accounts. Now all of this information is presented to the sales professional through the new Sales Navigator.

Features include lead and account recommendations, news mentions of key contacts through Newsle integration (LinkedIn acquired Newsle last month), notifications (job changes, common connections, etc.), CRM integration with Salesforce/Microsoft Dynamics, and advanced leads search, TeamLink, InMails, and Who’s Viewed Your Profile.

The new Sales Navigator is now available in English on Desktop and mobile (web). It will get its own mobile apps and additional language support later.

  • Advice On Sales Pipeline Management From Google Partners

Google is sharing a video featuring C.J. Hayden and Kristine Carey from Get Clients Now discussing sales pipeline management.

“As a business owner you know it can be challenging to get customers, follow up on leads, make sales pitches, and close the sale,” says Google.

With that in mind, the talk takes on the subjects of finding customers, following up with them in a timely fashion, having a sales conversation where you learn their needs and share your features and benefits, and of course landing the sale.

Google has been sharing a lot of these types of discussions on its Google Partners YouTube channel. You can find more of them here.

  • Two Out Of Five Salespeople Aren’t Meeting Their Quotas [Report]

Qvidian has some new research out finding that only 63% of salespeople are making their quotas. As a result, improving overall quota attainment is one of the top goals of executive managers.

The report, based on data from CSO Insights, is visualized with some graphs created by eMarketer (even Qvidian itself links to eMarketer for the report). As you can see from this one, the goal falls under only increasing win rates.

According to the report, the most likely reason quotas aren’t being reached is that opportunities end up as “no decisions”. Other reasons include salespeople being burdened with tasks with less time to spend selling, being unable to effectively communicate value, selling content and resources that aren’t aligned to the buyer, inability to find the necessary content or resources for selling, and selling content not tailored to the specific selling situation.

Areas cited by respondents as needing improvement include (from most to least): conducting thorough needs analysis, identifying and gaining access to all decision-makers, clearly understanding customer’s buying process, generating winning proposals and personalized selling, differentiating from competition, providing content specific to selling situation and buyer, and effectively presenting value.

SurePayroll president Michael Alter wrote an article for Inc.com a few years ago discussing ways to overcome unmet sales quotas. He suggested considering each sales rep’s experience and performance when developing individual quotas, getting more by asking for less, comparing results to past performance, and compensating successful reps adequately.

Joseph DiMisa, who has written multiple books on salesforce effectiveness, shares some insight into designing effective sales quotas in a more recent article.

  • iPhone 5c Target of New Apple Marketing Campaign

Earlier this year, CEO of Apple Tim Cook revealed that the iPhone 5c did not sell as well as Apple had expected it to, placing the blame upon the immediate market-recognition and appeal of the iPhone 5s: “I think the 5s, people are really intrigued with Touch ID. It’s a major feature that has excited people. And I think that associated with the other things that are unique to the 5s, got the 5s to have a significant amount more attention and a higher mix of sales.”

If a recent report from Taiwan is proven to be true, sales of the iPhone 5c could be worse than Apple is letting on. According to Digitimes, some 3 million iPhone 5c units are sitting in warehouses in Taiwan waiting to go to market, but the demand simply isn’t there.

Perhaps it is due to these low sales numbers and the impending release of the iPhone 6 that Apple forsaken its shunning of social media to virally market the iPhone 5c.

Earlier this month, 9to5Mac reported that more and more Tumblr users had mentioned seeing a new ad which seemed to be marketing the iPhone 5c, hosted at isee5c.tumblr.com. The ads feature a background color in the same palette as the choices for the 5c along with the now iconic dots featured on the back of the iPhone 5c case.

Beyond simply creating minimalist art inspired by the iPhone 5c aesthetic design, the ads also feature a brief music tune with a catchphrase at the end, such as “Viva o Carnaval”, “Porte de Lilas”, and “Enjoy the show”.

After doing some investigation, 9to5Mac is fairly confident that it is Apple, and not some Apple fan, that is behind this social media marketing campaign; The ads are popping up as “sponsored” on Tumblr users pages and the source code shows that the videos are being hosted by a Vimeo account with the username MAL – MAL being an acronym for Apple’s advertising agency, Media Arts Lab.

If this wasn’t enough of an indication that iPhone 5c sales are not good, one only need to look at the recent price cuts given to the 5c at Walmart retailers nationwide. If one is to start a new, 2-year contract with the iPhone 5c at Walmart right now, it would only cost $29 – a $16 reduction from the already ridiculously low price of $45.

While Apple is most likely trying to drastically reduce the iPhone 5c inventory before the release of the iPhone 6, the design of the 5c is not going to disappear anytime soon. Recent reports suggest that the aesthetic design of the iPhone 6 will be a hybrid of the iPhone 5c and the 7th generation iPod Nano, keeping the color palette and button configuration of the iPhone 5c and adopting the anodized aluminum construction of the Nano.

  • Sony Celebrating Vita’s Second Birthday With Sales

It’s been two years since the PlayStation Vita first hit store shelves. The handheld has been through some ups and downs (mostly downs) since then, but it’s finally starting to come into its own as a premium handheld device with games that largely cater to a core audience. Now some of those games are going on sale.

Sony announced today that its holding an anniversary sale on the PSN to celebrate the Vita surviving its first two years on the market. Many said it wasn’t possible within it first few months on the market, but things are looking up for it.

As a way of saying thank you to all the fans that spread the Vita gospel throughout its two years on this earth, Sony will be discounting a variety of games, like Castlestorm, Escape Plan, flOW, Flower and Hotline Miami. Many of these games support cross buy so you’ll be getting them on the PS3 and PS4 as well.

  • Nissan Leaf Sales Slow, Yet Set January Record

In 2010, Nissan became one of the first companies in the world to unveil a completely electric, emission-free automobile, the Nissan Leaf. When first released, however, the electric car craze had yet to hit the United States. Thanks to recent innovations and attention from the Tesla Model S and the Chevy Volt, however, the popularity of all-electric vehicles has begun to soar. While the Nissan Leaf may not have the name recognition of its competitors, its features and affordability make it one of the best all-electric models on the market.

Last month, Nissan sold its 100,000th Leaf, making the Leaf the number one selling electric vehicle in the world. (A number which Nissan celebrated by gluing 100,000 coins onto the car.) Despite selling more cars than any other electric car manufacturer, Nissan saw sales of the Leaf drop considerably from December to January. In December 2013, Nissan sold 2, 529 models. In January 2014, Nissan only sold 1,252. While this number is less than half of what it was one month earlier, the sales show a 92.6% increase from sales in January 2013, when Nissan sold 650 units total.

The 1,252 units sold this January is a new record for January sales for the Nissan Leaf.

One may wonder why the Leaf is performing so well when it often plays third fiddle in the media behind the Chevy Volt and Tesla Model S. For starters, one has to look at the price. The base model Leaf sells for $21,300 here in the US. That fact, coupled with government incentives for buying an electric vehicle and lowered prices due to moving manufacturing from Japan to Smyrna, Tennessee, make the Leaf a much more affordable option than the Chevy Volt or Tesla Model S. Aside from that, however, is the fact that the Nissan Leaf is superbly built.

The 99,999th buyer of a Nissan Leaf, Amy Eichenberger of Charlottesville, Va., explains why she made the switch from a Mercedes to a Nissan Leaf:

“As an architect, the style first got my attention, and I loved the concept of zero emissions… I’d been told once I drove a Mercedes I’d never drive anything else again. I don’t need fancy, but I do appreciate the solid feel and craftsmanship of a luxury vehicle, and I get that in the LEAF… The general fuel economy out there is unimpressive and many of them felt tin-canny. I didn’t even want to look at anything in the 20 MPG range. I considered the VW Jetta TDI, Toyota Prius, Honda CRV and a couple of Subaru wagons, and I always came back to the Nissan LEAF. Everything else seemed stuck in the past.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylePiNsCCFY&list=UUW47Uio6Y_pC_0No0Reak-g&feature=c4-overview

Fortunately for Nissan, the United States is not the only location where the Nissan Leaf is succeeding. In Norway, the Leaf has led all vehicle sales several times in the past year. In fact, Norwegians buy so many EVs that it ranks number 1 in the world in per capita EV ownership, with 21,000 Norwegians, out of 5 million total, owning an electric vehicle.

If an all-electric vehicle is not appealing enough, just wait. Last year in Japan, Nissan tests a prototype version of the Leaf with fully-automated controls. The test turned out to be quite a success; therefore, one may see self-driven Leafs on the road sooner than later.

  • Penney Store Closings of 33 Locations Will Cut 2,000 Jobs

On Wednesday, January 15th, J.C. Penney Co. announced the shutdown of 33 stores mainly located in smaller markets that have been experiencing a continual decline in customer visits.

According to Chief Executive Mike Ullman, the clothing company chain has experienced a drastic fall in sales and the closing of selective locations will help to improve the performance of the company’s stores.

This in result will affect present-day workers of Penney, which operates more than 1,000 locations and employees over 100,000 staff members. A staff cut of 2,000 workers is expected to occur within the next few weeks and will be completed by May.

The company, who has endure nine quarters without a successful profit, proposes that this strategy will help revive their loss by saving $65 million annually.

The company has not closed a large portion of its stores since 2001, but unfortunately, the ex-CEO’s prior strategy of replacing sales and discount promotions with low prices caused the company to plummet in revenue.

J.C. Penney to close 33 stores, cut 2,000 positions. http://t.co/6RzqIhrPUq

Ullman, who replaced former CEO Ron Johnson in April, “has restored promotions, brought back popular private-label brands and reinstated commissions for some salesmen while ending his predecessor’s strategy of remodeling the stores into collections of boutiques,” according to Bloomberg.

Kirk Ludtke, an analyst of CRT Capital Group, agrees that Ullman’s new strategy has improved the condition of the store.

“I think he’s done a good job of stabilizing the situation,” Ludtke reported to USA Today.

Ludkte also states that Penney’s closing will assist them in catching up to other national chains in the market.

However, Penney’s is not the only clothing company going through a setback.

Macy’s announced last week that it plans to cut 2,500 staff workers, close down a few stores but open new locations as well.

Analysts have concluded that early discounts during the holiday season were not too kind to retailers across the nation, which ultimately resulted in the reevaluation of store performances and profit.

  • IPhone 5C Discount May Help Target’s Sales

IPhone 5C Discount May Help Target’s Sales

IPhones, or any Apple related product, usually causes buyer fever, especially around the holiday season. Many people have some form of Apple product on their Christmas wish list. Teens and early 20-somethings are especially likely to have the IPhone 5C or the IPhone 5S on the Christmas list they give to their parents or favorite aunts and uncles. Therefore, Iphone sales will probably see a major increase from Black Friday until New Year’s day. Additionally, a big discount on an IPhone 5C could entice consumers enough to shop at a  struggling company.

Last weekend, to make up for the huge data breach, Target gave a 10% discount to all their shoppers. Many have complained that the discount wasn’t enough to draw them into shopping there anytime soon, or that they deserve a bigger discount. However, It could tempt enough consumers for Target to see a couple major sales days or weekends.

Over the 10% discount weekend, the Iphone sales were not enough to give Target a huge increase in profits. In fact, its sales were down by about 4% percent from last year, while other major retail stores remained about steady over that weekend.

The Target deals for last weekend, plus the 10% discount, made the Iphone 5c as low as $45 dollars. This deal also included a $50 dollar gift card.  The catch, of course,  is that you must sign a 2 year contract with one of the three major phone service providers (Verizon, AT&T or Sprint), which would cause customers to pay more in the long run. The current Target Iphone 5c sale offers the phone for between $30 and $200, with a $30 dollar gift card included.

Last minute shoppers might run out and take Target up on this tempting deal. However, they might find a better deal by searching around other retailers or waiting for the after Christmas sales, which are happening earlier than ever this year.

With so many other retailers selling IPhones, Target will have even more competition than ever, especially with people now questioning if Target is a reliable source for making purchases.

  • After Christmas Sales – Before Christmas?

When retailers start offering before Christmas sales before the actual holiday, you have to question – what is up?

Retailers have Black Friday– the most insane shopping day of the entire year – and all of those weeks in between Thanksgiving and Christmas to make their yearly quotas – could it be they are not making them – or are they just getting greedy.

Amazon.com is already offering “after Christmas” deals of up to 70 percent.

Old Navy advertises its “after-holiday sale starts early” with discounts of up to 75 percent. And CVS Pharmacy, which opened early Christmas Eve, is in on the trend with heavy discounts.

Some revealing yet advanced estimates for November 2013’s sales for retailers were up 4.7 percent compared to November 2012. Then perhaps it is greed.

This year, stores gave Black Friday shoppers an earlier window – opening in the evening of the Thanksgiving Day Holiday for those who wanted a head start.

This rush to discount inventory in early sales raises a lot of red flags.

Why are stores moving up their timelines earlier and earlier? Why are stores dropping their prices even before the end of the traditional holiday sales season? What message are we inadvertently getting about the economy?

With sales up from last year, could it be that stores are just exercising their power of the free market and becoming more and more competitive? You would certainly think so with all the competitive television ads going on during the holiday season.

Could it be the stores are afraid of hitting January with merchandise that won’t be worth squat because they’re seasonal, or could it mean that the pre-order sales expectations have not been met? The merchandise can be written off as a loss by the retailers, and some returned to the manufacturers, so this is really puzzling.

Perhaps these stores are concerned about unforeseen losses and are grabbing at every straw to prevent this from happening.

For the retailers and manufacturers, this aggressive, early sales strategy just could be an indicator of a weak and unsteady 2014 first quarter, with retailers and manufacturers wondering how to dump the unsold inventory.

After all, we have not yet come out of the worst recession since the “Great Depression” – is this just erring on the side of caution?

“Our store checks coupled with numerous other reports from over the weekend suggest the final Super Saturday weekend, while busy, did not generate the final crush of shoppers necessary to save this holiday season from being ‘ho-hum,’” said Ken Perkins, the president of Retail Metrics.

Either way, it is bizarre – and hopefully whatever these retailers are up to, it will help them fulfill their quotas and stay afloat. It really is helping customers get some great deals on products from cars to electronics.

  • Beyoncé’s New Album Destroys iTunes Records

A few days ago Beyoncé pretty much broke everything when she released a surprise album – and not just any surprise album, but a fully realized, self-titled album that also includes 17 accompanying music videos. The album, which initially launched as an iTunes exclusive, is only available as a complete package. iTunes will start selling individual tracks later this week.

Now, we’re learning that Beyoncé’s surprise gamble payed off. Apple has announced that the album is the fastest-selling album in the history of iTunes. In its first 3 days of availability, BEYONCÉ sold a staggering 828,773 copies – 617,213 of which were sold in the U.S. (also record-breaking).

The album also went #1 in 104 countries and has taken Billboard’s top spot as well.

The album (and all the videos) is $15.99 on iTunes.

The fifth full-length album from the singer has received near-universal acclaim and features a handful of guest stars including Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, Jay Z, Pharrell, and Timbaland.

  • Hey Small Businesses – Square Stand Is Only $99

This is a public service announcement for small business owners out there – Square had drastically reduced the price for their point of sale system, Square Stand. Starting today, you can purchase the all-in-one POS for just $99.

When Square first launched Square Stand back in May, it was $299.

Square Stand lets you attach your iPad to an adjustable stand, complete with an attached card reader. This replaces the old method of attaching the smaller Square Reader to your iPad. The Stand can be secured to your countertop, and when it is all said and done it becomes a more secure, permanent, and faster POS system for your business – at least according to Square.

“Local business owners take as a given that they need an ugly, slow, expensive, and complicated point of sale system cluttering their counter,” says Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of Square. “Square Stand is elegant, fast, affordable, and easy to use. Whether you’re selling cupcakes, cardigans, or cappuccinos, running your business with Square has never been easier.”

One of the top comments on Square’s video for Square Stand is simply “It’s too much,” and $299 was a pretty hefty price to pay when the company first launched the POS system. But for just $99, I’m sure there are plenty of small businesses who will find room in their budgets for and easier, more permanent way to process payments.

In other Square news, the company just unveiled a brand new card reader that’s thinner and is able to process swipes with better consistency.

  • PlayStation Store Discounts Tomb Raider, Dungeons & Dragons In Second Week Of Holiday Sale

Last week, the PlayStation Store started up its weekly holiday sale where a number of games would be heavily discounted in the weeks leading up to Christmas. While last week’s sale had a number of great deals on some of the best RPGs of 2013, this week will appeal to a wider variety of gamers.

Sony announced that this week’s holiday sale will be headlined by a Tomb Raider bundle that includes this year’s excellent reboot of the franchise and all its DLC. While normally $30, the game will be discounted to $14.99 during this week. PlayStation Plus subscribers can enjoy an additional discount of $1.50 for a total price of $13.49. While $13.49 for Tomb Raider is a great deal, those of you who own a next-gen console may want to wait for next February’s next-gen port of the title.

Other highlights include a bunch of excellent classic games from Capcom, including Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, Marvel vs. Capcom Origins and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. All of the above games will be available for $7.49 or $3.75 for Plus members.

Here’s the full list of games on sale this week:

If you happen to be a PlayStation Plus member, you’ll get an extra gift today in the form of Borderlands 2 for free. If you haven’t had a chance to play the game yet, there’s no better time to jump in for some shoot and loot action. Unfortunately, none of the DLC is on sale, but it just might be discounted as we move closer to the holidays.
