  • Monster Hunter Is Free For PlayStation Plus Members This Week

Has your PS Vita or PSP felt a little lonely lately? Well, it won’t be lonely anymore if you happen to be a PlayStation Plus member and a fan of monster slaying.

Sony announced this morning that this week’s PlayStation Plus update will feature only one new addition – Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. The title was originally released on the PSP a number of years ago, but it’s now free for PSP and PS Vita owners. If you’re new to Monster Hunter, Freedom Unite would be a good place to start for those wondering what Capcom’s super popular series is all about. I can assure you – it’s more than just hunting monsters.

Here’s some of the features players will find in the game:

  • The biggest Monster Hunter title to date with over 500 hours of gameplay.
  • Huge variety of character customizations including 1400 weapons and over 2000 armor sets.
  • Players can form a team of up to 4 players through Ad-Hoc play and experience the social gaming phenomenon.
  • AI Felyne companion, who will accompany players on quests and provide aid through the challenging battles.
  • Fans of the series can transfer their data from Monster Hunter Freedom 2.
  • If Monster Hunter isn’t your jam, there’s a number of other games going on sale this week for PlayStation Plus members. The standouts include the entire BioShock franchise and Fez. The latter is launching on Tuesday for the PS4, PS3 and Vita, and PlayStation Plus members can get a small discount as part of the Spring Fever sale. Here’s everything going on sale:

Sony would also like to remind gamers that Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition for PS4 and Tomb Raider for PS3 will both leave the Instant Game Collection on April 1. If you have yet to download either game, you’ll want to download them before the start of the month.

  • ‘Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate’ Announced For Nintendo 3DS

Less than one year ago, Capcom released Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Though the franchise does not have the same huge fan base in the U.S. that it has in Japan, Monster Hunter is still loved by a dedicated group of fans who aren’t always at the top of publisher Capcom’s to-please list.

Monster Hunter fans in Japan have been enjoying Monster Hunter 4 for months now, while fans in the west have had to wait (or import). Now, Capcom has revealed just how long that wait will be.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be coming to the U.S. and Europe sometime in early 2015. The game has only been announced for the Nintendo 3DS, with no Wii U version mentioned.

For their wait, western Monster Hunter fans will get a game based on Monster Hunter 4G, the expanded version of Monster Hunter 4 that was announce for the Japanese market earlier this week. It seems that the original Monster Hunter 4 will not be localized for the U.S. or European markets.

The official release date announcement was accompanied by a video from Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. In the video, Tsujimoto teases the new gameplay and enemies in Monster Hunter 4:

  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Launches March 19

Capcom today announced that the localization of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (MH3U) will be coming to Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS consoles on March 19 in the U.S. and March 22 in Europe. The game will also be released as a downloadable title in Nintendo‘s eShop sometime around March 22. A downloadable demo will be coming for the game on February 21.

New details on MH3U were also revealed in Capcom’s announcement. The title will support voice chat for multiplayer via the Wii U. For those who prefer to type, the game supports both a touch screen keyboard on the Wii U GamePad or a USB keyboard.

Unfortunately for fans of Monster Hunter Tri for Wii, the release of MH3U will mean the end of that game’s online play. Monster Hunter Tri’s servers will be shut off on April 30, and Capcom is, obviously, encouraging fans to upgrade to MH3U.

  • Some Notable Wii U Launch Window Games Have Been Delayed Into Spring

Back before the Wii U launched, Nintendo said that the console would enjoy 51 launch window titles. In short, there would be 51 games out for the console before the end of March. It seemed ridiculous at the time, and Nintendo seems to think so now as well since a number of those games have now slipped into April and beyond.

Nintendo released an updated release schedule this morning for the first part of the year. A number of high profile games will be released over the next two months for the system, but an even greater number of great looking games have now been delayed.

So the Wii U owners don’t get too depressed, here’s the good news. The Wii U will still get some killer content in February and March. Ubisoft has the fantastic Rayman Legends on tap for launch on February 26. Capcom will be bringing Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on March 19. Nintendo will be publishing LEGO City Undercover on March 18. EA will be bringing the Wii U port of Need for Speed: Most Wanted on March 19 as well.

As for eShop content, The Cave will be launching on Jan. 22. Other games like BIT.TRIP Runner 2 and Toki Tori 2 will be launching sometime before the end of March.

As you may have noticed, a number of great looking Wii U launch window titles are no longer present on this list. Game & Wario, The Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U and Pikmin 3 have all been delayed into an ambiguos realm known as “the first half of the year.” In short, we won’t be seeing these games until sometime after April, but June.

Speaking of June, the Wii U game shortage should be sorted out by then. Nintendo needs to have a clean slate so it can focus on all the new games it will be announcing at E3 this year. It’s looking promising already with rumors swirling around regarding new projects from Retro Studios that may or may not include a new Metroid.

  • Wii U Sells Over 300,000 Units In Japan At Launch

The Wii U has now officially launched in every major territory. It pulled respectable numbers for its US and UK launch, but what about Japan? The numbers have just been reported and it’s another good launch weekend for Nintendo’s newest console.

According to numbers from Famitsu, the Wii U sold 308,570 units in the two days since its launch. Compare that to the 400,000 units in the US and 40,000 in the UK. It should be noted again that the numbers from the UK don’t represent all of Europe and Australia so the sales there are obviously higher. With all that being said, it seems that Nintendo has easily sold over 1 million Wii U units since its launch last month.

I predicted that Monster Hunter would be the big seller in Japan for the new console. That prediction turned out to be only partially accurate as New Super Mario Bros. U was the biggest performer over the two-day period with 170,563 units sold. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate came in second with 110,159 units sold. Third place was Nintendo Land with 78,41 units sold. Its numbers are a bit lower as it’s not bundled with the console like it was in North America and Europe.

Nintendo is still hoping to sell 5.5 million Wii U units before the end of its fiscal year in March. It’s assumed that it’s already sold over a million units worldwide now. Now Nintendo has a little over three and a half months to see another 4.5 million units. Can it do it? It’s possible, but the company needs to pick up its pace and deliver more stock to stores, especially in the UK.

  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Coming To Wii U And 3DS

Nintendo is on a roll this morning. They just hooked the casual market with Nintendo TVii and they got the hardcore gamer with Bayonetta 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Now they’re reaching even further into the most hardcore of the core gamer to bring them Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

In what was a small announcement out of Nintendo this morning, Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that Capcom would be bringing Monster Hunter back to the West as a Wii U and 3DS exclusive. Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto shares the news and says that more details are on the way:

The game is being made for the Wii U and 3DS for a very specific reason. The series has always been strongest on portable systems and Capcom wants to continue that in a big way. Save data from Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate can be transferred between both versions of the game. Players on the 3DS version can also play cooperatively with those on the Wii U through a local wireless connection.

The Wii U version of the game is host to a number of console specific features. The main feature being the new abilities afforded by the Wii U gamepad screen. Players will be able to access items, maps, books and more through the second screen.

Both games will be powered by Capcom’s powerful MT Framework engine. The game has already proven itself on the 3DS with the impressive Resident Evil Revelations. The engine has also proven itself capable of handling large open world games with Capcom’s excellent Dragon’s Dogma. In fact, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate may be the closest thing we get to a Dragon’s Dogma sequel for the time being.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for both the Wii U and 3DS will be available March 2013.
