Google Updates Smartphone User-Agent of Googlebot

Google announced that in April, it will update the smartphone user-agent of Googlebot. The company says the update is so that its renderer can better understand pages that use newer web technologies.

    After

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 4.14.55 PM

“Our renderer evolves over time and the user-agent string indicates that that it is becoming more similar to Chrome than Safari,” says Google software engineer Katsuaki Ikegami. “To make sure your site can be viewed properly by a wide range of users and browsers, we recommend using feature detection and progressive enhancement.”

“Our evaluation suggests that this user-agent change should have no effect on 99% of sites,” Ikegami adds. “The most common reason a site might be affected is if it specifically looks for a particular Googlebot user-agent string. User-agent sniffing for Googlebot is not recommended and is considered to be a form of cloaking. Googlebot should be treated like any other browser.”

Google suggests checking your site with is Fetch and Render Tool (in Search Console) if you think your site might be affected.

The change will take place on April 18.

  • Groupon Announces New Merchant Tools Including New Tablet App

Groupon announced new website, mobile, and tablet enhancements aimed at making it easier for merchants to create and manage Groupon marketing campaigns across devices.

These include redesigned web and mobile tools under the Groupon Merchant brand, as well as a new tablet app that lets users track and manage their Groupon campaigns and more self-service deal options.

The company says this provides merchants the ability to customize the structure and appearance of their promotion.

“We’ve seen first hand that local businesses can compete in an increasingly connected world and against online giants, and we’re focused on continuing to enable that competition,” said Aaron Cooper, SVP of North America Services at Groupon. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to bringing in new customers, which is why we’re giving merchants every option they need to run a promotion with us in a way that’s the most advantageous for their business.”

“The new Groupon Merchant tablet app works in tandem with existing web and mobile tools so merchants can track and manage their Groupon campaigns across all of their devices,” the company said. “Businesses can use the app to redeem Groupons, monitor campaign performance, share positive feedback via social media and respond to customer service inquiries.”

The app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

Deal Builder users can now choose a customized discount, and merchants can now use their own images and descriptions.

  • Google Gives Game App Developers New Ad Formats, Targeting

Google Gives Game App Developers New Ad Formats, Targeting

At the Games Developers Conference, Google announced some new features for AdWords and AdMob to make it easier for developers to reach the right users and do so at scale. These include the ability to let users try apps before downloading (right from Google Search) as well as portrait videos, a new type of targeting, and a new monetization option.

In December, Google introduced Trial Run Ads for the Display Network. These ads are now being extended to Google search results in beta for select advertisers in the United States. When someone searches for a game, they can hit “Try Now” from within a search ad and try it out before installing it.

Only smartphone users on WiFi will see the ads, and they’ll be able to play a game for up to 10 minutes before deciding if they want to download it. The goal is for users who are most likely to spend more time using the app to be the ones downloading.

Google will also launch Portrait Video Ads in the coming weeks. These give users a full-screen experience in portrait without them having to re-position their device. Google says it has already seen these ads improve click-through and conversion rates.

“Advertisers have long been able to control who sees their AdWords ads, and in the coming weeks we’ll be launching even finer options to reach high-quality users with Active User Targeting for Games,” says Sissie Hsiao, Product Management Director of Mobile Display Ads. “This new type of targeting for Android apps can show ads to users who have spent more than 30 minutes playing games, or who have played a Google Play Games integrated game in the last 30 days. Game developers can show their ads to game lovers, and combined with other types of targeting, such as a particular game category (e.g., Adventure), they can reach a very precise audience.”

“AdMob helps app developers around the world earn through in-app advertising with best-in-class formats and smart tools to maximize revenue,” Hsiao adds. “Increasingly, rewarded advertising is becoming a popular form of game monetization: users are given the choice to engage with ads in exchange for in-app rewards. Today, we’re introducing a way for developers to easily monetize apps with rewarded video ads from a number of ad providers in AdMob Mediation. Supported networks and platforms include AdColony, AppLovin, Chartboost, Fyber, Upsight, and Vungle, with more being added all the time. So if you’re a developer monetizing with these providers, you can easily manage and optimize them through the AdMob interface. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to provide app developers with a first-class mediation solution, and follows our recent launch enabling SDK-less mediation.”

Google is hosting talks and each day of the conference, and will be part of its main sessions on Thursday.

  • Google Not a Fan of Workarounds For App Install Interstitials

Google doesn’t like app install interstitials, and it doesn’t like sneaky workarounds for things, so it should come as no surprise that it doesn’t like sneaky workarounds for app install interstitials.

As an update to its mobile-friendly algorithm in November, Google said pages with an app install interstitial that hide a significant amount of content on the transition from the search result page won’t be considered mobile-friendly.

“Instead of full page interstitials, we recommend that webmasters use more user-friendly formats such as app install banners,” Google said at the time. “We hope that this change will make it easier for searchers to see the content of the pages they are looking for.”

Some app owners have found a way around this, but what they’re doing may not help them for much longer.

Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable points to a Q&A in a Google webmaster hangout (start at 49 minutes in).

Someone points out Yelp specifically as an example (which is interesting given the company’s vocal opposition to Google’s policy on this) of a mobile site that uses a “splash screen that’s not really a splash screen,” because it just makes the user scroll down.

According to Google’s John Mueller, Google may take manual actions on things like this and may even alter its algorithm to penalize such practices.

  • AdWords Gets Bulk IDFA/Advertising ID Upload On Android, iOS

Google announced the launch of bulk IDFA/advertising ID upload for app marketers across Android and iOS. According to the company, this will help advertisers increase customer activation and retention with easy app engagement.

The feature enables app marketers to reconnect with app users in “relevant moments,” Google says.

“Simply put, it’s a tool that allows a developer to upload their own list of existing app users that they’d like to engage further on their app,” says Google’s Tom Price. “For example, say a retail app wants to get purchasers from their holiday sale to check out their new spring discounts. They can pull a segment of their app users’ IDs from their own analytics tools and upload them to AdWords. They can then run engagement campaigns across apps on the Google Display Network while targeting a group of potentially high-value users. The targeted campaign can incentivize users by providing a special discount on their retail app purchase and reduce friction by opening a specific section of the app upon ad click.”

“You can also use this feature if you have both a site and a mobile app,” Price adds. “If your site has had success targeting an audience who’ve shown interest in, for example, board games on your site, use your app analytics tools to create this segment of app users, and upload to target those users in AdWords. This helps you get in touch with users during those crucial micro-moments across platforms. Bulk IDFA/advertising ID upload is now available via AdWords and runs on the Google Display Network.”

Price points app marketers to Google’s best practices for app engagement here.

  • Google Offers Office Hours for AMP Help in 8 New Languages

Google Offers Office Hours for AMP Help in 8 New Languages

Google has been holding a number of AMP office hours hangouts to help publishers better understand how to implement Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) on their sites and deal with the various issues and scenarios that come along with that.

Google began sending search traffic to AMP pages last month, and will likely only increasingly point users to these pages when applicable as time goes on. AMP isn’t a direct ranking signal yet, but it could be in the future. Google is already exclusively showing AMP content in news carousel results on mobile.

Over the next couple of weeks, Google will roll out a new series of office hours in the following languages: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and Indonesian.

The hangouts will feature product managers, technical managers, and engineers from Google, who will speak in these languages and answer questions accordingly.

There’s a schedule of the planned office hours here.

As reported earlier, Google has been working with Lullabot to create a Drupal 8 module that supports AMP, and the beta version is now available. They’re also working on one for Drupal 7.

  • Google Announces New Hands Free Payment App

Google Announces New Hands Free Payment App

Google announced it is piloting a new payment app called Hands Free with South Bay residents. The goal is to let users pay in stores in completely hands-free fashion.

The app is available for both Android and iOS and works at a few McDonald’s, Papa John’s, and local eatery locations in South Bay. Those lucky enough to be able to use it can even get $5 off their first Hands Free purchase.

Senior director of product management Pali Bhat writes on the Google Commerce blog:

Once you’ve installed and set up the app, Hands Free uses Bluetooth low energy, Wi-Fi, and location services on your phone to detect whether you’re near a participating store. When you’re ready to pay, you can simply tell the cashier, “I’ll pay with Google.” The cashier will ask for your initials and use the picture you added to your Hands Free profile to confirm your identity.

At select stores, we’re also in the early stages of experimenting with visual identification so that you can breeze through checkout even faster. This process uses an in-store camera to automatically confirm your identity based on your Hands Free profile picture. All images captured by the Hands Free camera are deleted immediately.

It’s unclear when the pilot might be opened up to more people and/or include more partners, but that probably depends on how it goes during this initial run.

Google has averaged 1.5 million new registrations per month for Android Pay since launching it in September. Currently in the U.S. alone there are over 2 million locations that accept it. Google made it available for apps in December.

  • Drupal 8 Module For AMP Released in Beta

Drupal 8 Module For AMP Released in Beta

Google and the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Project announced a new Drupal 8 module that provides support for AMP. Google has been working with Lullabot to create the module, and the beta version is now available.

The two are starting to work on a Drupal 7 version of the module as well, which will be available later this month if everything goes according to plan.

“One of the most touted features of Drupal is its flexibility, so making Drupal produce AMP HTML has required a lot of careful consideration of the design approach,” says Lullabot’s Matthew Tift. “To make Drupal output AMP HTML, we have created an AMP module, AMP theme, and a PHP Library.”

“When the AMP module is installed, AMP can be enabled for any content type,’ Tift adds. “At that point, a new AMP view mode is created for that content type, and AMP content becomes available on URLs such as node/1/amp or node/article-title/amp. We also created special AMP formatters for text, image, and video fields.”

With the module, the AMP theme is triggered for any node delivered on an /amp path, and can be extended using a subtheme to give publishers more flexibility. This enables them to place AMP ad blocks on the AMP page with Drupal’s block system.

Tift discusses the module more in this post on the AMP blog.

For WordPress publishers, an AMP plugin was also recently made available.

Google began sending search traffic to AMP pages last month. For now, it is only showing AMP results in the news carousel on mobile devices.

  • WhatsApp To End Support For These Mobile Platforms

Last week, WhatsApp turned seven years old. Facebook acquired it for $19 billion two years ago.

Late on Friday, the company announced that by the end of the year it will end support for WhatsApp Messenger on several mobile platforms. These include: BlackBerry (including BlackBerry 10), Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1, Android 2.2, and Windows Phone 7.1.

“When we started WhatsApp in 2009, people’s use of mobile devices looked very different from today,” the company said in a blog post. “The Apple App Store was only a few months old. About 70 percent of smartphones sold at the time had operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia. Mobile operating systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft – which account for 99.5 percent of sales today – were on less than 25 percent of mobile devices sold at the time.”

“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future,” it said. “This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.”

Earlier this month, WhatsApp announced that it passed the billion active users milestone (the same time as Gmail coincidentally).

Last month, WhatsApp announced that it would no longer charge users for any of its services. Most people weren’t using paid options anyway, but they’ve done away with charges while still not introducing ads.

The company did say that starting this year, it will test tools that allow users to use WhatsApp to communicate with businesses and organizations, not unlike the path Facebook Messenger is on.

Businesses, stay tuned for opportunities there.

  • Facebook Launches Canvas Full-Screen Ads

    Facebook Launches Canvas Full-Screen Ads

Facebook just announced the international release of Canvas, which it describes as a new full-screen, immersive mobile ad experience, which loads “nearly instantaneously” when someone taps on a News Feed ad.

“Facebook built Canvas in collaboration with brands and agencies to achieve any objective by giving them a fully customizable space on which to build multimedia stories. Advertisers can use a mix of video, still images, text and call-to-action buttons to build beautiful and effective brand and product experiences on mobile,” the company said.

“Within a Canvas, people enjoy moving through digital stories easily,” Facebook says in a blog post. “They can swipe through a carousel of images, tilt to view panoramic images and zoom in to view images in detail, making the Canvas experience immersive and engaging in a way that mobile sites aren’t. And Canvas uses the same technology that makes photos and videos load quickly on Facebook, so it loads as much as 10 times faster than the standard mobile web.”

According to the company, Canvas loads as much as ten times faster than the standard mobile web. It calls the ads easy to build with no code or software required.

Any advertiser can begin building a Canvas starting today. The tool is available in Power Editor and the Publishing Tools tab on Facebook Pages. The ads work on both Android and iOS.

You can see Canvas in action in a handful of videos here.

  • Google Announces AMP In Search Results

Google Announces AMP In Search Results

As reported on Tuesday, some users were already seeing AMP results in Google mobile search results, but there was no official announcement.

A previous report from Ad Age indicated that the launch would come on Wednesday, and Wednesday indeed, Google made the official announcement:

In just over four months, AMP has come a long way, with hundreds of publishers, scores of technology companies and ad-tech businesses all taking part in this joint mission to improve the mobile web for everyone. And starting today, we’ll make it easy to find AMP webpages in relevant mobile search results, giving you a lightning-fast reading experience for top stories.

Now when you search for a story or topic on Google from a mobile device, webpages created using AMP will appear when relevant in the Top Stories section of the search results page. Any story you choose to read will load blazingly fast—and it’s easy to scroll through the article without it taking forever to load or jumping all around as you read. It’s also easy to quickly flip through the search results just by swiping from one full-page AMP story to the next.

According to the company, pages built with AMP load an average of four times faster and use 10 times less data than equivalent non-AMP pages.

As speed has been a ranking factor for some time, it stands to reason that using AMP will benefit you for SEO purposes.

  • Microsoft Kills Skype Qik App After Adding Features to Skype

Microsoft Kills Skype Qik App After Adding Features to Skype

About a year and a half ago, Skype launched the Skype Qik video messaging app. After adding some of its features to Skype itself, the company has decided to shut it down.

As the company notes, Skype is consistently rated as one of the top apps in all the app stores and with key features available in that, there’s just not a lot of point in keeping the separate app around.

The Skype team says in a blog post:

We’re always hard at work evolving Skype for mobile, and have continued to add new features, such as group video calling. Some of the features we’ve added might look familiar, and for good reason. In 2014, we launched Skype Qik, a mobile video messaging app to help share moments with groups of friends. Since then, we have learned that many of you are already doing these things in Skype, and as a result, we migrated some of Qik’s most used features into the Skype app you already know and love.

We’ve enabled video messaging in Skype and fun features such as filters, to make your messages even more personal. To send a video message in Skype today, simply look for the video message icon in the media bar.

Skype Qik will be available for use until March 24. If you have anything in it you need to save, do so before then.

  • Microsoft Launches Skype Group Video Calling For Mobile, Tablets

Microsoft Launches Skype Group Video Calling For Mobile, Tablets

Microsoft announced the launch of Skype group video calling for mobile phones and tablets. This is now rolling out on iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets in Western Europe and North America.

“At Skype we believe that video is essential to maintaining personal connections with the people who matter most,” Skype says in a blog post. “To see someone’s face, to view a reaction and to experience that closeness with people you love — these are the things that inspired and motivated us to deliver a first-rate group video calling experience on mobile and tablet. Here are some of the things you can look forward to on your next group video calling experience.”

“For the ultimate get together experience, group video calls are in glorious HD quality and optimized specifically for the device you’re using, giving a more natural feel to the call,” it adds. “The person talking is displayed front and center and video is immersive and full screen. Audio is also crystal clear, thanks to our SILK Super Wide Band audio codec in our cloud conferencing stack. To achieve this, we’re proud to have worked with one of Microsoft’s biggest partners, Intel, which helped enable us to optimize SILK Audio specifically for Azure running on Intel processors.”

More on group video calling here.

The roll-out to the mentioned markets is expected to be complete within the next week or so. The feature will roll-out worldwide next month.

  • Big Facebook News For Anyone Publishing Content

Big Facebook News For Anyone Publishing Content

Facebook announced that on April 12, it will open Instant Articles to all publishers. This means that any publisher, regardless of size, will have this same content advantage as the major players Facebook has already catered to with the offering. If you create content, listen up!

Do you plan to implement Facebook Instant Articles? Do you expect it to be an advantage? Share your thoughts in the comments.

So far, Facebook has been allowing a few hundred publishers to take advantage, but this should mean a better user experience for many more pieces of content in users’ News Feeds.

To be clear, Facebook says it’s extending the offering to any content publisher or blog. If you have a blog, you’ll be able to utilize Instant Articles.

If you don’t have a blog, why the heck not? As we recently saw in a study from TrackMaven, blogs are frequently overlooked by businesses these days in favor of social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. But blogs can still be very effective and utilizing them more often can help you out a lot. Hopefully Instant Articles will only add momentum.

You can sell and serve your own display ads in Instant Articles and keep 100% of the revenue. You can also monetize unsold inventory using display ads from Facebook’s Audience Network.

You don’t have to create original content for Facebook. It’s just another way to distribute content you’re already producing. When someone shares an Instant Article on Twitter or by email, it also shares a link to your site.

Beyond loading quickly, Instant Articles offer publishers some other interesting functionality such as autoplay videos that begin as readers scroll, the ability to zoom in on photos while tilting the phone, the ability to like and comment on individual photos and videos in a story, geo-tagged images, and swipable photo galleries.

    Product manager Josh Roberts says:

Media organizations and journalists are an integral part of Facebook, and we’re committed to delivering products that will create the best experience for publishers and their readers. With Instant Articles, publishers have full control over the look of their stories, as well as data and ads. They have the ability to bring their own direct-sold ads and keep 100% of the revenue, and track data on the ads served through their existing ad measurement systems, or they can monetize their content through the Facebook Audience Network. Additionally, publishers can use their existing web-based analytics systems to track article traffic or use third-party providers. They can do all this while accessing a rich suite of multimedia tools to create dynamic, interactive stories, that will load quickly everywhere on Facebook, regardless of where in the world their readers are.

We’ve made it easy for publishers to join by building a system based on the tools they already use. Instant Articles uses the languages of the web and works with publishers’ content management systems, and we have documented an open standard that is easy for publishers to adopt. We encourage all interested publishers to review our documentation and prepare for open availability in April, at which point they will be able to share this fast, interactive experience with their readers.

Regarding content and audience analytics, Instant Articles supports comScore attribution, and publishers can use their existing analytics systems or third-party providers like Google Analytics or Omniture. The company is also in talks with European attribution and measurement providers.

Facebook also lets publishers track reader-engagement with its own analytics tools. In addition to aggregate activity data, it provides info on article reach and engagement, time spent in each article, scroll-depth and engagement with rich media assets like photos and videos.

The Instant Articles themselves so far appear for iPhone and Android users. Facebook says they work for any article type from daily coverage to long-form, in-depth articles.

In case you’re wondering how much work it’s going to take to implement Instant Articles, Facebook says it has tried to make things as easy as possible.

“After some basic setup, publishers can automate Instant Article production directly from their own content management systems, via RSS,” the company explains in an FAQ document. “Facebook provides tools so publishers can see all the items in their Facebook publishing feed and edit or revise content manually. Facebook also provides tools for publishers to preview articles before publication.”

You’re no doubt wondering if using Instant Articles will help you in News Feed ranking and organic reach. Facebook’s official answer is no, but I’m sure it won’t hurt. They certainly seem to favor Facebook videos over YouTube videos.

The April 12 launch date coincides with Facebook’s f8 developer conference, so there will no doubt be plenty of related takeaways coming out of that.

F8 registration opened up earlier this month. You can apply here. They’ll also stream the event online.

Google’s answer to Instant Articles – the open source AMP (which is being adopted by a variety of other organizations) – will get its real start for users this month when Google starts sending search traffic to the pages.

Between AMP and Instant Articles, the mobile user experience in general is probably about to get a lot better over the coming months.

Are you going to implement Instant Articles with your content? What about AMP? Let us know in the comments.

  • AdWords Android App Gets More Useful

AdWords Android App Gets More Useful

Last year, Google finally launched an AdWords mobile app. While it only came to iOS last month, it’s been around for Android since March.

While the app has no doubt proven to be incredibly helpful for many advertisers, it has still been missing some things. On Friday, Google announced that the Android app now includes universal app campaigns and new conversion columns.

In a Google+ post, Google explains:

If you’re promoting your app, you can can get a quick snapshot of how your universal app campaigns are performing by viewing metrics like downloads and average cost-per-install, and make adjustments to daily budget or target cost-per-install.

With new conversion columns, you can check on how well your campaigns are achieving your business goals by monitoring metrics for total conversion value and conversion value per cost — while on the go.

The app can be found in Google Play of course, and the new iOS app is in the App Store.

  • Reddit Announces Android App Beta, New iOS App to Follow

Reddit Announces Android App Beta, New iOS App to Follow

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced on the site today that the company is putting out an Android app (in beta) today with a new iOS app to follow.

The announcement is just casually noted in a longer post about Reddit in 2016. It talks about issues the site has faced and continues to face. From the post (via TechCrunch):

Spam and abuse threaten Reddit’s communities. We created a Trust and Safety team to focus on abuse at scale, which has the added benefit of freeing up our Community team to focus on the positive aspects of our communities. We are still in transition, but you should feel the impact of the change more as we progress. We know we have a lot to do here.

I believe we have positioned ourselves to have a strong 2016. A phrase we will be using a lot around here is “Look Forward.” Reddit has a long history, and it’s important to focus on the future to ensure we live up to our potential. Whether you access it from your desktop, a mobile browser, or a native app, we will work to make the Reddit product more engaging. Mobile in particular continues to be a priority for us. Our new Android app is going into beta today, and our new iOS app should follow it out soon.

This isn’t great news for all of the unofficial Reddit-reading apps out there that have been filling the void, but for many users, it is long overdue.

The app doesn’t appear to be in the Google Play store yet, but presumably it will be soon.

  • Yahoo Mail Mobile Apps Get New Features

Yahoo just made a couple of Yahoo Mail announcements. The iOS app is getting new customizable swipes and a recent attachments feature. The Android app is getting the swipes and new actionable notifications.

Here’s what Yahoo says about new swipes for iOS (you can see the explanation for Android here):

Swipes are one of the fastest ways people clean up their inbox. However, everyone uses email and actions differently. Now you can personalize your swipes with your favorite actions, including “star,” “move to folder” and “archive” (if you have multiple mailboxes) to help you save time. Just open your “Settings” and choose “Swipe actions.”

On iOS, when you compose an email, you can now see all recently received photos and file attachments with a search bar to find what you’re looking for. Also, new is the ability to create, delete and rename folders and subfolders, which was only available on desktop before.

You can also now star and mark emails as spam when you multi-select emails. This is also available on Android.

Also on Android, you can now take action on incoming emails from the notification.

  • Yahoo Updates App, Homepage

Yahoo announced some updates to its mobile app and homepage in the U.S. making it easier to get to news and content and follow developing news stories.

The company says it looked at the latest mobile trends to guide its design of the new app and homepage.

“With this update, we’ve made it possible to sift through more content in less time,” says Yahoo SVP Simon Khalaf. “You no longer need to open individual articles in multiple browser tabs; instead, you can simply scroll through related stories inline. Up top, our editors pick some of the most important stories you need to know, alongside content most relevant to you. For a more in-depth understanding of a story, see related stories by clicking the “heart” icon, or clicking through to find additional related stories below each article. Over time, as you click on more content, the Yahoo stream becomes more tailored to your interests. The more you use the app and homepage, the better your experience will be.”

“News stories have the power to start meaningful conversations,” he adds. “With tens of millions of you sharing your views daily as part of our vibrant community, we want to amplify your voice. We’ve made it easier for you to share your thoughts, engage and converse with each other about a particular topic or story. This new update surfaces comments directly in-line, making it easy to share and hear reactions from our community, in one place.”

Stories now have follow buttons so you can receive notifications when a story is update.

The updated app is available in the the App Store and Google Play.
