  • Trayvon Martin’s Tweets Are Now Available

Last month’s shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin has sparked a world of controversy in the public arena, especially over topics like racial profiling and “stand your ground” self-defense provisions. The case appears shrouded in mystery and confusion, with very conflicting reports from shooter George Zimmerman and his attorneys, who allege that Zimmerman was acting in self defense, and representatives of Martin’s family, who claim that the boy was unfairly profiled and followed by Zimmerman, and who portray Martin as a kind, helpful, A and B high school student.

Evidence was initially slow to appear, but it eventually became known that Martin was on the phone when the incident occurred. The case is currently being reviewed by a grand jury, while in the meantime activists are expressing solidarity with Martin and his family through rallies like New York City’s Million Hoodie March, or by posting pictures of themselves in hoodies on Twitter and other websites. Even the Miami Heat got involved.

The key issue in the case may be the character and background of the Zimmerman and Martin. Zimmerman was not arrested following the shooting because police found insufficient evidence to contradict his claim of self defense. While currently immune from prosecution under Florida self-defense laws, if a court were to find that Martin, rather than Zimmerman, was acting in self-defense during the altercation, then Zimmerman could be tried for manslaughter. Attorneys in the case may draw on character evidence and witnesses and criminal background to determine culpability.

New information is now out on the case, with possible implications for the public’s view of Martin’s character. The Daily Caller made available today a history of Martin’s tweets from the last month he was alive. Shortly after his death Martin’s twitter account, with the handle NO_LIMIT_NIGGA, was disabled.

Many of the tweets and retweets found in the document make reference to sex and drugs, and a lot of them contain profanity. Others, though, express common teenage sentiments: enthusiasm for an upcoming youth fair, and observations on love, heartbreak, and dating. It’s really hard to gauge Martin’s character from two months of tweets (I advise you never to judge anyone’s character based solely on a snippet of social networking activity), and while the tweets suggest that Martin was not necessarily an innocent and naive boy, I encourage readers to remember the playful posturing of teenage boys acting tougher and more experienced than they really are. Here they are for your perusal via [The Daily Caller].

  • Al Sharpton To Speak At Trayvon Martin Rally After Resignation Of Police Chief

The Reverend Al Sharpton is set to attend a rally tonight for Trayvon Martin despite his mother’s sudden death this morning. Sharpton says she would have wanted him to support Martin’s family, who will also attend tonight at Fort Mellon Park in Sanford.

Sanford police chief Bill Lee Jr. announced today that he will be temporarily stepping down from his post due to the negative attention brought on the department by the shooting of the teenager in February.

“My role as the leader of this agency has become a distraction from the investigation,” said Lee. “It is apparent that my involvement in this matter is overshadowing the process.”

The crowd gathered at the press conference where Lee made the announcement reportedly began chanting, “The chief is gone! Zimmerman is next!”

George Zimmerman, the man who admitted to shooting 17-year old Martin in “self defense“, has not been arrested yet despite public outcry because an investigation is still pending–and has the FBI involved.

“He took a life,” Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, said. “He took my son’s life and he needs to punished in a court of law for what he did.”

The rally, which is being called the “Million Hoodie March” due to attendees’ plans to wear a hoodie in support of Trayvon–who was wearing one on the night he was shot–is expected to start tonight at 7 p.m.

  • Trayvon Martin March Supported by Former Michigan Governor

Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm donned a hoodie yesterday to show her solidarity with the “Million Hoodie March” that took place in New York City. The march was in support of the family of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teenager who was shot and died in an altercation with a self-appointed community watch member last month.

The post on her Facebook page reads: “Suiting up in solidarity with the ‘Million Hoodie’ March for Trayvon Martin.” Granholm was the first female governor of Michigan and served from 2003 until 2011. She now hosts a political news and commentary show on Current TV called The War Room with Jennifer Granholm.

The Trayvon Martin case has garnered attention for its unusual circumstances, involving Florida self-defense laws and race. Protesters online and (now in New York) are outraged by what they see as a failure of police to properly investigate the shooting. New evidence has recently come to light that could support their assertion that Martin was murdered. The case has only recently been taken up for further investigation by Florida and federal authorities.

Organization for the march was helped by the use of Twitter, and the outrage about the case has been growing:
