  • Green Bay Packers: Will Lacy Be Ready For Sunday?

With Super Bowl aspirations still in mind, the Green Bay Packers took the practice field today for the first time since getting beat up by the Seattle Seahawks last Thursday night in Seattle. The good news is that they will be facing the New York Jets at home in Lambeau this Sunday, the bad news is that they may have to face them without their stellar running back Eddie Lacy.

Lacy did not practice on Wednesday after receiving a concussion in the fourth quarter of last week’s game. The NFL’s concussion protocol demands that Lacy must be cleared by an independent doctor before he can return to a practice or game. Lacy was able to attend practice today as a non-participant.

According to Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy, the sophomore back is almost finished with the mandated concussion protocol. “He’s had good workouts. He progressed very quickly,” said McCarthy during the team’s post-practice press conference today.

If Lacy is able to practice tomorrow, the running back should be ready to face the Jets come Sunday. Lacy had 12 carries for only 34 yards against a very tough Seattle defense last week playing in hostile territory. However, Lacy was a beast last year with 11 touchdowns and 1,178 rushing yards. He was also the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

If you own Lacy on your fantasy football squad, a la the Shady Rangers, and are waiting to see if he is going to play on Sunday, it’s just too early to tell whether his concussion will keep him on the bench or not. However, the mere fact that Lacy was at practice is a good sign because players ready to come off concussions typically attend practice as part of the last stage of recovery.

Here’s the rest of the Packers injury report from this afternoon’s press conference:

LB Brad Jones (thigh) – DNP
OT Bryan Bulaga (knee) – limited
TE Brandon Bostick (leg) – limited
CB Demetri Goodson (concussion) – full

  • Green Bay Packers Prepare For The 49ers

After beating the Chicago Bears to clinch the NFC North, the Green Bay Packers will have to face the San Francisco 49ers, again.

This Sunday the Packers will take on the 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Playoff game.

As a Packers fan, I’m happy to see them make it this far into the playoffs. It was touch and go for a while, first Clay Matthews broke his thumb in the week 5 game against the Lions, then Randall Cobb got hurt in the game against the Ravens in week 6, then Jermichael Finley’s season ending injury he suffered week 7 against the Browns, and quite possibly the greatest loss for the team for a while, when Aaron Rodgers got hurt during the Monday Night Football game week 9 against the Bears.

All the worry and frustration dissipated when news broke that both Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb would be playing in the playoff game against the Bears.

Now a win against the 49ers will determine if the Packers continue their season.

When word came that the Packers would be playing the 49ers, flashbacks to last season’s final game against the 49ers began. It was the game that would send the winner to the Super Bowl. That winner was the 49ers. That game still stings for this fan.

That game was played in San Francisco though. Maybe the bitter cold of winter in Green Bay could be an advantage for the team? Not necessarily so according to Rodgers, “You know, not everybody in this locker room is from the great state of Wisconsin. We do practice in it, live in it. I think we’re going to be better adapting to it initially, but once the game starts, it’s about who can execute in the cold weather. It does some different things to the football. It’s about taking care of the football in the playoffs and making some big plays. It definitely does change the texture of the football. So, you have to factor that in when you’re tossing the ball to a (running) back or when you’re throwing it. You have to make some small adjustments.”

However, that bitter cold could have one downfall – fewer butts in the seats at Lambeau Field, but head coach Mike McCarthy isn’t worried about ticket sales. “I’m not concerned about it. Lambeau Field, I fully expect and have great confidence that it will be an incredible environment come Sunday. We have great fans. These are the games our fans live for, so I really have no concern about it at all. I have confidence that whatever needs to be done will be done,” said McCarthy.

With their offense looking fresh again, it’s the defense the Packers need to worry about and keeping 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick contained. The Packers defense was ranked 29th and they have been struggling the past nine weeks. Matthews breaking his right thumb again in the week 16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers isn’t helping either.

These injuries and changes the Packers have faced this season doesn’t seem to phase McCarthy. “We’re a playoff football team. Our identity has changed. This team has embraced it, and we know it’s going to take the full game to get it done, and that’s the way we play,” said McCarthy.

You can watch the Packers take on the 49ers on Sunday, January 5 on FOX at 4:40 p.m. EST.

  • Green Bay Packers Are Without Aaron Rodgers Again

For a Green Bay Packers team that has been struggling since his departure several weeks ago, the news that Aaron Rodgers will be out of the lineup in this week’s game is not good for the Packers, and their fans.

As they are still attempting to make the playoffs, the inclusion of Aaron Rodgers in the lineup would certainly help, but without him, they will be hoping for a miracle in order to make the playoffs.

This Sunday, they will play against a Steelers team in a similar situation, although with the Packers playing in the NFC North, they have an easier time of making the playoffs than the Steelers, who trail both the Bengals and the Ravens.

The Green Bay Packers currently have a record of 7-6-1, and have struggled greatly since the loss of their star quarterback. Aaron Rodgers, being one of the best quarterbacks to play football, was surely going to be missed on the team, but they had no idea how much.

There has been plenty of speculation about the return of Aaron Rodgers recently, and he is continually not being cleared to play.

The latest report came from coach Mike McCarthy when he said “As an organization we do not feel like we are ready for him to play. He’s not medically cleared, that’s still the case today. As an organization, we don’t think this is the right time for him to play.”

After going down during a Monday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears on November 4th, Rodgers has not returned to the field, and they were not able to win a game during the month of November. They finally got their second win since his departure during a late comeback in their last game, with some help from Tony Romo’s interceptions, beating the Cowboys.

They have won their last two games, and in the remaining games of the season, they will play the Steelers and their division rivals, the Chicago Bears. The Bears currently lead the NFC North with a record of 8-6. The Lions led the division for much of the season, but after recent losses, they no longer control their own destiny, and may not make the playoffs.

After the Packers lost Aaaron Rodgers to injury, the Packers tried out a few different quarterbacks including Seneca Wallace and Scott Tolzien, but finally turned to someone they were familiar with, and re-signed Matt Flynn, who has started ever since.

With two remaining games, Matt Flynn and the Green Bay Packers will have to step up their game if they hope to continue playing in January.

  • Aaron Rodgers Has Not Been Ruled Out, But Return Is Unlikely

Aaron Rodgers has certainly been missed by the Green Bay Packers since his collarbone injury that he suffered on November 4th against the Chicago Bears. Seneca Wallace finished the game, and two other quarterbacks have had the opportunity to start in his place, while Matt Flynn has become the current starter.

Rodgers has not been cleared to play in Sunday’s game yet, but the possibility of him being able to play has not been ruled out yet. In the 5 games that Aaron Rodgers has been out, the Packers have lost four games, and tied once.

While Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the sport, fans probably did not expect such a downward skid after his injury. Matt Flynn, who took over for Rodgers the last time that he got injured was tossed around the league since then, and was just recently signed by the Packers in order to fix the problem at the quarterback position.

He went down early in their game against the Bears, a game that they would later lose. It was originally reported that the star quarterback would be out 3-6 weeks, and as this weekend marks the 6 week mark, it comes time for coach Mike McCarthy and Packers to reevaluate the situation.

Aaron Rodgers’ fate in the remaining games of season is uncertain at this point, and with the way the team has played without him, it is unlikely that they will be able to make the playoffs. With any injury, it is better to play it safe and not come back too soon, which Rodgers understands, and he does not want to chance anything.

He will have a limited participant in practice on Wednesday with Matt Flynn as the starter. In Sunday’s game, the Packers will play the Atlanta Falcons, a team that has had a lot of trouble winning this season.

Over the weekend, a source told NFL Media Insider Ian Rappaport that Aaron Rodgers would be “lucky” to play on Sunday, and recent comments from Mike McCarthy have done nothing to change that.

Upon seeing the x-rays, Rodgers said “We’re now four weeks and one day from my fracture. I’ve made a lot of progress. A lot of it is just the bone healing. Bone takes three to six weeks to heal. We all hoped we’d be on the short end of that. … I desperately want to be out there, but it has to look good.”

As one of the top players in the league, the Packers have missed Aaron Rodgers greatly, and would love to see him return to the field. However, if he is not cleared medically, then bringing him back on the field may not be the smart decision in this case. Coming off of a blowout loss against the Lions, the Packers have a record of 5-6-1, and since Rodgers left the field, they are 0-4-1, proving that they are unable to play without him. They are currently in third place in the NFC North.

  • Matt Flynn Is Returning To The Packers To Fix Quarterback Situation

Matt Flynn is set to return to his old team, after an awful situation has occurred at the quarterback position. Flynn previously played for the Packers, but has since been traded around the league, and had a spot on the roster of the Seahawks, Raiders, and Bills. He recently made a return, and worked out with the Packers on Monday.

It was certain likely, given the situation that Flynn had been in since leaving the Packers, and their recent situation at quarterback, that he might return.

Aaron Rodgers was recently injured in their game against the Bears, and if that was not enough, his backup Seneca Wallace, also suffered an injury in their loss against the Eagles.

If Wallace is not able to play, then Scott Tolzien will be the one who will step in and start, being the only healthy quarterback on the team. Due to the recent addition of Flynn, he will only be used as Tolzien’s backup. Tolzien has been listed as the starter, so what does that mean for Flynn, and going forward with the team?

Matt Flynn had two excellent performances for the Packers the last time that Aaron Rodgers got injured two years ago, but since then he has been a bit of a disappointment in the league. He signed a deal with the Seahawks, but soon lost the job to the young star Russell Wilson, and the same thing happened with Terrelle Pryor, after being traded to the Raiders. After that he was traded to the Bills, but was released earlier this month.

What was a topic of serious speculation in recent weeks has now become a reality, after Matt Flynn signed a contract with the Packers, and had his first practice on Monday. Scott Tolzien is set to start in their next game, but depending on how he performs, Flynn may be able to get a start sooner rather than later.

Coach Mike McCarthy has already made a statement about Flynn’s return, and said “(Flynn) went through his workout this morning. (He) looks good. That’s really all I have for you right now. Everything else is a work in progress.”

With Matt Flynn on board as a backup, the Packers will get set to play against the New York Giants in their next game.

  • Randall Cobb Injured: WR Will Miss Multiple Weeks

Randall Cobb, the wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, was injured in Sunday’s game. In a season that seems to be attacking almost every team in the league with some sort of injury, the Packers are the latest team to fall victim, losing both receiver Randall Cobb and fellow receiver James Jones in the same game.

Both players were injured in yesterday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. Despite the injuries to an already ailing Packers team, they were able to prevail and defeat the Ravens in a very odd scoring game with a final score of 19-17. ESPN senior analyst Chris Mortensen confirmed that Cobb has a fractured fibula and could miss up to 6-8 weeks.

Cobb leads the team with 29 receptions. He did return to the game after being hit in the right leg by Ravens safety Matt Elam. He was also seen using crutches on the sideline. James Jones was also injured, going down in the first quarter, and did not return. In relation to both injuries, head coach Mike McCarthy said “James, my understanding is he may have a chance. Randall does not have a chance this week. Randall will be multiple weeks.”

The absence of both Cobb and Jones has left the Packers with only two viable options for receiver in Jordy Nelson and Jarrett Boykin. They will likely need to add another for next week. They have already re-signed the rookie Reggie Dunn to their practice squad, as of Monday.

It was previously reported from Adam Schefter of ESPN that reports were good, and that he was only likely to miss a week or two. After further analysis of the injury, he is going to miss more than that, and will be a tough blow to the offense of the Packers.

Randall Cobb’s injury will certainly hurt the Packers moving forward, after already struggling at third place in the division. They trail the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions in the NFC North division, with a record of 3-2. Next week, they play against the Cleveland Browns at home.
