Lawmakers Introduce Bills to Ban TikTok

A bipartisan group of lawmakers have introduced bills in the US Senate and House to ban TikTok.

TikTok has been under fire repeatedly for its privacy practices, as well as concerns regarding Beijing’s influence and TikTok’s handling of US user data. Senator Marco Rubio and U.S. Representatives Mike Gallagher and Raja Krishnamoorthi have introduced legislation that would ban TikTok over such concerns.

“The federal government has yet to take a single meaningful action to protect American users from the threat of TikTok,” said Senator Rubio. “This isn’t about creative videos — this is about an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day. We know it’s used to manipulate feeds and influence elections. We know it answers to the People’s Republic of China. There is no more time to waste on meaningless negotiations with a CCP-puppet company. It is time to ban Beijing-controlled TikTok for good.”

“TikTok is digital fentanyl that’s addicting Americans, collecting troves of their data, and censoring their news,” said Representative Gallagher. “It’s also an increasingly powerful media company that’s owned by ByteDance, which ultimately reports to the Chinese Communist Party – America’s foremost adversary. Allowing the app to continue to operate in the U.S. would be like allowing the U.S.S.R. to buy up the New York Times, Washington Post, and major broadcast networks during the Cold War. No country with even a passing interest in its own security would allow this to happen, which is why it’s time to ban TikTok and any other CCP-controlled app before it’s too late.”

“At a time when the Chinese Communist Party and our other adversaries abroad are seeking any advantage they can find against the United States through espionage and mass surveillance, it is imperative that we do not allow hostile powers to potentially control social media networks that could be easily weaponized against us,” said Representative Krishnamoorthi. “The bipartisan ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act is a strong step in protecting our nation from the nefarious digital surveillance and influence operations of totalitarian regimes. Recent revelations surrounding the depth of TikTok’s ties to the CCP highlight the urgency of protecting Americans from these risks before it’s too late.”

Pressure has been mounting against TikTok, especially in the wake of revelations that the company misled Congress regarding how US data is handled. The company’s executives had testified that US data was handled by a US team when, in fact, the data was often forwarded to China and handled there. In subsequent testimony, following the revelation, execs refused to commit to keeping US data out of China. The company has also been accused of planning to surveil specific Americans.

Calls for a ban on TikTok have been increasing, with FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr being particularly vocal in his belief that action should be taken against the Chinese firm. In the meantime, states have begun taking matters into their own hands, banning the app and website from state-owned and operated devices.

  • Kelly Clarkson Ridiculed For Weight Gain, Chris Wallace Apologizes

Kelly Clarkson received an apology from Fox News anchor Chris Wallace after he body shamed her on talk radio.

The 67-year-old news anchor was on Mike Gallagher’s radio show on Friday and a discussion on pizza led to the two men poking fun at Clarkson’s weight.

At first, Gallagher jokingly called Wallace out about fat shaming. “Don’t fat shame me. You do a lot of fat shaming,” the radio host warned before inexplicably moving on to Clarkson.

“Have you seen Kelly Clarkson? You know the singer, Kelly Clarkson? Holy cow, did she blow up,” said Gallagher.

Wallace didn’t react at first and even mentioned that the first American Idol had a lovely singing voice, something that the radio host agreed with. But the veteran news anchor later came back to the topic and said “She could stay off the deep-dish pizza for a little while.”

The comments didn’t escape the ire of listeners, with a lot of them going on social media to criticize the fat shaming. Even Wallace’s Fox News colleague Greta Van Susteren denounced the comments and demanded that he apologize, which he did.

“I sincerely apologize to Kelly Clarkson for my offensive comment,” the Fox News Sunday host said in a statement. “I admire her remarkable talent and that should have been the focus of any discussion about her.”

Mike Gallagher also posted his own apology on his personal website. Mocking his own weight issues, the radio host posted that “Tubby Mike is the last person in the world who should bring up anyone’s weight” before adding “I couldn’t possibly feel any worse than I do for making an observation that led to the conclusion that I ‘fat-shamed’ this talented and classy entertainer.”

“It was a really stupid thing for me to do,” Gallagher confessed.

Clarkson hasn’t commented yet on the apology.

  • Chris Wallace: Fox Anchor Fat Shames Kelly Clarkson, Should Apologize

Chris Wallace owes Kelly Clarkson a big apology. The Fox News Sunday anchor made a very derogatory comment about the singer during a radio interview on Friday, and now many people are outraged by his rude behavior.

It was on The Mike Gallagher Show that Mike Wallace got carried away with his mouth. He and the host began dishing on Little Caesar’s bacon-wrapped pizza when the conversation spiraled. Neither of the men behaved in a gentlemanly manner.

“Have you seen Kelly Clarkson? You know the singer, Kelly Clarkson? Holy cow, did she blow up,” Mike Gallagher said, steering the conversation in an unacceptable direction.

“Really? Do we want to talk about some of your friends? Kelly Clarkson’s got a lovely voice,” Chris Wallace said.

And then he got in on the diss.

“She could stay off the deep dish pizza for a little while,” he said.

This isn’t the first time Kelly Clarkson has been dissed for her weight since giving birth to daughter River Rose Blackstock back in June. It was about a month ago when British TV personality Katie Hopkins very cruelly said Clarkson looked like she had eaten her backup singers.

It was while she was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that Kelly Clarkson spoke out about the hurtful comment–the first one.

“I love that people think [the topic] is new. Like, welcome to the past 13 years,” she said. “I yo-yo. Sometimes I’m more fit and I get into kickboxing and hardcore, and then sometimes I don’t and go, ‘Nope, I’d rather have wine!’”

Do you think Kelly Clarkson will respond to Chris Wallace and Mike Gallagher’s unkind remarks as well, or does she figure they’re not worth the effort it requires to comment?

What’s your take on Chris Wallace’s remark? Being a Fox anchor, he surely knows better.

Do you agree he owes Kelly Clarkson an apology?
