Sylvester Stallone Considered Boycotting Oscars, “Creed” Director Told Him to Go

Sylvester Stallone grappled with boycotting the Oscars in light of the lack of diversity shown by Academy voters this year. After receiving his nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Creed, he decided to ask his director his thoughts on the boycott.

Director Ryan Coogler is African-American, but he didn’t want Sylvester Stallone to boycott the event.

“I spoke with Ryan Coogler when this happened. I said, ‘Ryan how do you want to handle this? Because I really believe you are responsible for me being here,’” Stallone said. “I said, ‘If you don’t want me to go, I won’t.’ He said, ‘I want you to go.’ That’s the kind of guy he is. He wanted me to stand up for the film.”

There are some who believe Ryan Coogler, as well as Creed and its leading actor, Michael B. Jordan, were snubbed.

Sylvester Stallone holds out hope that the Oscars will become more diverse in the coming years.

“It’s a matter of time. Eventually, all talent will rise to the top. It’s a matter of getting a new paradigm, a new way of thinking,” he said.

Will you tune in to the Oscars on February 28? Do you expect Sylvester Stallone will win an Academy Award for his role in Creed?

  • Sylvester Stallone On Michael B. Jordan Getting Knocked Out And Why He’ll Never Play Rambo Again

Sylvester Stallone is a Hollywood action staple. He has impressed two generations of action fans with his stints as Rocky, Rambo and various other no-nonsense powerhouses.

While Sylvester Stallone was out promoting his latest film, Creed, which centers around his relationship with the son of Apollo Creed, he took some time to sit down with Jimmy Fallon.

We are ever so glad he did.

Sylvester Stallone revealed that he made Michael B. Jordan, who plays Apollo Creed’s son, take a real hit as an initiation of sorts into the Rocky family. He calls the process Dead Man Walking.

He explained, “Otherwise, you’re kind of like a dead man walking, because unless you take the shot, you can’t be part of the family because we’ll bring it on.”

    The CREED goes on !

He added, “you have to get clobbered, usually by a man infinitely stronger and larger.”

To which Michael B. Jordan replied, “Bring it on.”

Michael B Jordon taking it on the chin for real! Got up and did it again!!! I know the feeling…

And bring it on, he did. Sylvester Stallone had Jordan’s fictional adversary, “Pretty” Ricky Conlan (British boxer Tony Bellew), deal Jordan a blow that knocked him out instantly.

And made all who saw it cringe.

Sylvester Stallone also talked about having to do the same thing when he was filming the Rocky movies.

When asked about the worst hit he ever took, he admitted it was from Dolph Lundgren.

He said, “It was unbelievable. He hit me so hard in the chest that the next thing I knew I was on a low-altitude flight to intensive care at St. John’s Hospital surrounded by four nuns.”

But, it seems those days are over for Sylvester Stallone. After he’d previously hinted at an encore for Rambo almost a year ago to the day, he revealed to Variety that he’s just not up for it.

He said, “The heart’s willing, but the body says, ‘Stay home!’ It’s like fighters that go back for one last round and get clobbered. Leave it to someone else.”

Sylvester Stallone is 69, after all. Maybe it’s time to slow down?

What do you think of Sylvester Stallone’s induction of Michael B. Jordan into the Rocky family?

  • Tessa Thompson Breathes New Life Into “Rocky” Franchise in “Creed” Role

Tessa Thompson plays the role of aspiring singer Bianca in the newly released film Creed. Her acting, in addition to her singing and songwriting skills, breathes new life into the “Rocky” franchise.

This is the first prominent film role for Thompson. She starred in the indie film Dear White People, and had a small part in Selma.

Both an actor and a singer, Tessa Thompson convinced director Ryan Coogler she was exactly what he needed for Creed.

“I’ve been in this band, “Caught a Ghost,” for about two and a half years. When I was auditioning for Creed, Ryan told me they were interested in casting a musician. I convinced him that it should be me, and later he called and asked me to be in the studio with a composer and producer. To work on such a deadline and write these songs specifically for the movie is really a unique challenge that at various moments was frightening and really fun,” she says in a recent interview with Variety.

Tessa Thompson believes Creed will draw a whole new audience to the Rocky franchise.

“The movie definitely brings a new kind of audience into the franchise. In this film, Philadelphia is a character in the movie. It’s also a part of Philadelphia that we’ve never seen. Ryan Coogler is into the stories that he writes, like what it means to be a young black man in this country. It’s tremendous to get to work with someone who has a specific stake in a story, and isn’t afraid to tell it,” she says.

In addition to Tessa Thompson, Creed, of course stars Sylvester Stallone, although he takes a backseat to younger characters in the film. It stars the very handsome Michael B. Jordan as the son of Rocky’s longtime opponent, Apollo Creed.

Creed opened in theaters on Wednesday.

  • Kate Mara’s Star Power Is On The Rise

Kate Mara has always been a powerful actress, but with the success of the Netflix series House of Cards, her star power is definitely on the rise.

The 30-year-old actress has been acting for 17 years. Her first role was in Law & Order when she was 14 and over the years, she’s been one of those actresses you see over and over but can’t quite recall their name.

She’s starred in numerous television shows and made appearances in acclaimed films like Brokeback Mountain and 127 Hours. But, she never quite broke into the spotlight.

    But, all that is changing.

Her strong performance in House of Cards playing newspaper reporter Zoe Barnes has led to roles in some high-profile films that are in the works.

Mara just signed on to play Sue Storm (Invisible Girl) in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, joining other rising Hollywood stars Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), Miles Teller (Dr. Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm/The Thing).

The project has been in development over the past five years and is expected to be one of the biggest summer blockbusters in 2015.

Mara said working with Academy Award-winner Kevin Spacey, who plays Frank Underwood on House of Cards, is a wonderful experience and nothing like she imagined.

“Most people have this sort of picture of him as – and I sort of did as well before I started working with him – I thought he was going to be very, very serious, and a little intimidating,” said Mara. “And that’s not my experience with him at all. He’s hilarious and with all the dramatic stuff we had to do together, he kept it light with me and I always felt really comfortable with him.”

  • The Fantastic Four Reboot Makes Controversial Casting Decisions

It’s official…almost: the Fantastic Four reboot came closer to finalizing the cast this week. Previous reports revealed that Michael B. Jordan plans to play the Human Torch/ Johnny Storm. In Feb, several actors screen tested for the other three major roles. Among those actors and actresses were Kate Mara, Emmy Rossum, and Miles Teller.

Eventually Mara won the role of Sue Storm/the Invisible Woman over Emmy Rossum. 20th Century Fox and director Josh Trank offered Mara and Jordan final deals. However, due to Teller’s busy filming schedule, his deal is still in the works. Trank wants to work around Teller’s other projects, to avoid scheduling conflicts. If Teller officially joins the cast, he’ll play Reid Richards / Mr. Fantastic.

Another addition to the cast is Jamie Bell. Bell was offered the role of Ben Grimm/ the Thing, but has not finalized his deal with Fox and Trank for the role.

The Fantastic Four began in the 1960s, during Marvel Comics’ golden age. The comics revolved around a scientist, his family, and his best friend. They develop powers after cosmic radiation exposure. The Fantastic Four battle various creatures throughout the series, but their main nemesis is Dr. Doom. Previous reports claim Fox wants an A-list actor for that role, which may result in a gender swap.

Marvel Comics and Fantastic Four fans still have to wait a little longer to discover what, if any, changes will be made to ensure an A-lister plays Dr. Doom.

Trank’s reboot is based on the Ultimate Fantastic Four series, which ran from 2004-2009, and had 60 comics. Ultimate Fantastic Four followed a much younger version of Sue, Ben, Reed and Johnny; the origin of how they developed their powers was changed as well.

Many comic purists already labeled the reboot a failure, because of the racial, age, and physical differences between the cast compared to the original Fantastic Four characters. However, all four young actors have proven their talent in various shows and movies, so they may silence naysayers after the film’s release.

The Fantastic Four reboot hits theaters June 19, 2015.
