  • Google: Why Are You Asking Us If Your Ears Make You Look Fat?

Google Fellow Amit Singhal spoke at SMX London this morning. Daniel Waisberg at SMX sister site Search Engine Land liveblogged the whole discussion. Towards the end, Singhal answered a humorous question from Danny Sullivan, who asked about funny searches Singhal had come across.

The liveblog says: “Amit says that once he read a query along the lines ‘do my ear[s] make me look fat?’ Amit laughs: ‘why are you asking Google that? Go figure it alone!’”

Judging by Google’s own search results for the query “do my ears make me look fat,” I’m guessing it’s because of the meme portrayed in the top three results, which all come from Cheezburger.com:

Do my ears make me look fat?

Do my ears make me look fat?

Do my ears make me look fat?

But maybe some people really do want to know if their ears make them look fat. I guess Google won’t be getting into physical criticism of its users anytime soon, although, you can probably judge for yourself how your ears make you look if you fire up a Google+ Hangout. Perhaps there are some universal search opportunities for Google there.

A couple of us here at the office tried to ask Siri the same question several times, and just couldn’t get her to understand the question. She can’t seem to distinguish “my ears” from “my years”.

  • Scumbag Steve Debuts Scumbaggy Rap

    Scumbag Steve Debuts Scumbaggy Rap

In the annals of internet memedom, it’s hard to find a more widely used and recognized meme than Scumbag Steve. He’s the guy that asks for a ride and then spends the entire time dissing your car. He’s the guy who asks if he can borrow money and takes a year to pay it back. He’s the guy who sleeps with your sister and won’t shut up about it.

Basically, Scumbag Steve is used to express any sort of behavior that’s, well, scumbaggy. Not only is the now-ubiquitous image of Steve in his sideways fitted hat and furry coat an internet staple, but that legnedary hat is shopped on images to give anything “scumbag status.” Scumbag brain, scumbag congress, scumbag Google Chrome – almost anything can achieve it.

Here’s a good sampling of the Scumbag Steve meme, courtesy of KnowYourMeme:

    (image)

After shooting to quick infamy online, Scumbag Steve was identified as 21-year-old Blake Boston. He apparently has a pretty good sense of humor and according to his blog

Hey I’m Blake Boston aka Scumbag Steve. The meme, What ever the f*ck that is. Ya, it’s really me. Im down with the meme. Like I had a choice?

He says that his mom snapped the famous picture during a photo class. He was 15 or 16 when it was taken.

Looking to capitalize on his internet fame a little more, Blake Boston has just dropped a rap titled “Scumbag Steve Overture.” What can I say? It’s not great. As one YouTuber put it: “Who just killed his own f*cking meme? Scumbag Steve, Scumbag Steve.” You’ll start reading that comment in a melodic fashion after listening to the rap below (NSFW):

Well, at least he’s not bitter about being the butt of a giant internet joke. If you want to see more of the real Scumbag Steve (if), you can check out this interview he did last year.

  • Google Glasses As Interpreted By A Meme-Fueled Internet

I absolutely love Project Glass, Google’s smart glasses project. While the concept itself is exciting enough, the potential uses in the future for the device are pretty awesome. From being a Terminator to playing Battlefield 5 in an empty lot, the potential is limitless. The latest concept/parody video might be the most truthful of all the videos though as it shows us what happens when Project Glasses gets into the hands of the Internet.

YouTube user ElectRoulette has created what will probably be the Internet’s first use for Project Glass – turning them into Meme Glasses. What follows is a day in the life of what you might call a casual purveyor of Internet culture. I’m sure it would be much worse for the people that live and breathe the Internet.

Of course, there are some pitfalls that come with the Meme Glasses beyond using memes over a safe limit. The concept of being able to spot ninjas in the open is a terrifying prospect indeed. The glasses being able to tell your ethnicity just by how you drive might also open the door to some potential litigation.

Regardless, this is one of the best parody videos yet, because I can see this actually happening within a year of the glasses being on sale. Give people the power to take memes anywhere they go and the world would be a much better (and funnier) place. The only problem would be updating the glasses with the most recent memes. As we all know, there’s nothing worse than a tired, over-used meme.

  • Infographic Divides Users of the Internet Like High School Cliques

The following infographic from Flowtown categorizes users of the internet into seven different personas.

The graphic warns its viewers to avoid engaging politicos and lurkers but the two have different agendas. The politico is obsessed with reposting headlines and copy and pasting political speeches while the lurker enjoys monitoring the Facebook posts and Skype chats of others. Lurkers eventually get sick of living in the shadows and attempt to provoke responses from the people he or she has been observing.

Even more annoying are the fact finders and meme machines that regurgitate information to entertain themselves as they float along in their solitude.

    (image)

Two internet faces that should be added to this infographic are the winking wankers — these are individuals who are always trying to hook up by offering swanky hotel dates, back rubs, and the best sex in the galaxy. The other face would be that of the reminiscer. You know the type; they are the ones who are always posting pictures of themselves from when they were in 5-12th grade and are creating groups like “Remember the Time When Eastman High Had a Mercury Spill” or “Prom of 1999 Was Epic.” These are people who live in the past and are addicted to reposting their old school buddy’s wedding photos despite the fact that they were not invited.

What personality describes you the best?

  • Dave MacDowell: Art, Lebowski, And The Internet

Dave MacDowell has made quite a name for himself in the art world over the years, garnering a huge following on Facebook as word spread of the brilliantly talented artist with a stellar sense of humor.

Using anything and everything related to pop culture–characters from movies like “The Big Lebowski” play a recurring role in his work–and making it his own, MacDowell takes the things that resonate with our society and turns them into a work of art that we can both relate to and laugh at. His pieces are a commentary on our obsession with both pop-culture and the way information is spread in a digital world.

“Everything pop-culture is fair game!” he told WebProNews. “Aside form television and books, most entertainment streams through the computer. If the internet ever becomes regulated, most artists and galleries will be screwed royally….I imagine we’ll just all go underground with magazines and more pop-up art shows. You can’t stop the movement, and the work will find a way to get seen by any means necessary.”

The Virginia Beach-based artist says the internet plays a big role in both inspiration for the art and putting it out into the world; he even estimates that as much as 75% of gallery sales happen virtually.

“The internet is a powerful tool for every artist these days,” MacDowell says. “The images fly fast and free, and prospective opportunities are a click away. Everything is virtual these days, because reality sucks.”

For art lovers/pop-culture enthusiasts like myself, MacDowell’s work is particularly brilliant because he’s not afraid to poke a little fun at iconic figures from film and music; everyone from Steve Martin–who was turned into Scumbag Steve Martin for a meme-inspired work entitled “Dirty Rotten Scumbag Steve” earlier this year–to Notorious B.I.G. has been immortalized by MacDowell’s brush.

    (image)

His creations, which usually entail taking two or more pop-culture references and merging them in some fantastic, colorful, hilarious way, have won the admiration of art enthusiasts everywhere, including some big-wigs at NBC/Universal. They put MacDowell in touch with Carson Daly, who interviewed the artist last year for his show, Last Call With Carson Daly.

But as much as the internet helps get his artwork out there, MacDowell says it will never replace seeing a work of art in person and experiencing the small textural details that get lost in digital translation.

“I’ve seen million dollar deals signed just by images chosen over a computer screen,” he says. “With that said, the internet will never recreate the experience of seeing and experiencing art live and in person. A lot gets lost through pixels and there ain’t nuthin’ like the real thing.”

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Suggests Titanic Alteration, Cameron Complies

In about four days from know, you’ll be able to take another trip on James Cameron’s Titanic. The difference between this one and the one that came out in 1997? 3D.

Actually, that’s not quite right. While the “added dimension” is the most notable revision, thanks to the badassery of Neil deGrasse Tyson–the Internet’s current favorite super-genius–James Cameron has also included an additional alteration, one that makes the stars in movie match the time period. And no, I’m not talking about the Leonardo DiCaprio or Kate Winslet, either.

I’m talking about the massive balls of plasma that decorate the night sky.

Thanks to the suggestions of deGrasse Tyson, the star field Winslet’s character was looking at while drifting on her wooden floatation device, shortly after DiCaprio’s character sinks beneath the surface, now reflects the time period Cameron was aiming for. deGrasse Tyson, calling on his considerable knowledge of astrophysics, noticed the stars in Cameron’s orignal film did not match the actual star field on April 15, 1912 at 4:20 AM in the morning. And so, deGrasse Tyson emailed the director, informing him of the overlooked detail.

According to SlashFilm, deGrasse Tyson wasn’t necessarily “nice” when he told Cameron about the error, either:

Cameron described Tyson’s original message “quite snarky,” but conceded that the scientist had a point. “With my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have put the right star field in,” Cameron acknowledged. “So I said, ‘All right, send me the right stars for that exact time and I’ll put it in the movie.’”

One can imagine how being scolded by someone of deGrasse Tyson’s considerable intellect could be quite humbling. To celebrate the celestial alteration, here’s Celine Dion reminding everyone what her heart will do whenever she’s confronted by a sinking luxury liner and losing the one she loves:

This, apparently, was Cameron’s reaction after he got over deGrasse Tyson’s snarky email.

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Talks About Being A Meme

Neil deGrasse Tyson is a widely respected astrophysicist and authority on many things science. His job, as of now, is to direct the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space. He’s also an author and frequent guest on an array of popular shows like The Daily Show and Real Time with Bill Maher. He’s basically pop culture’s favorite scientist.

But on the internet, he might be best-known in some circles as the “we’ve got a badass” guy. Yes, Neil deGrasse Tyson has achieved what some people can only dream about (or have night terrors, it kind of depends): he has become an ever-present meme.

This isn’t to say that the denizens of the internet only know Tyson as his meme’d self. His achievements and works in his scientific field are much-celebrated – especially on reddit, where Tyson has somehow garnered hero-like status. Tyson has participated in multiple AMAs on reddit, “Ask Me Anything” sessions that work like a crowdsourced interview. Every AMA that he does becomes the talk of the reddit town – oftentimes for days afterward.

But you might have seen his countenance used in one particular fashion on the web – as a standard commentary used to make fun of people who make self-important, boastful statements online. Like all memes, the various acceptable uses can morph, and in this case the meme is also used as a joke when people buck authority in the lamest way.

It started as “Watch out, we’re dealing with a badass over here,” but you’ll see it as “watch out, we got a badass over here” or some other similar phrase.

    (image)

The meme got its start after Tyson gave a certain reaction during an interview with Big Think. He was discussing his love for Isaac Newton, and the hands-up motion came when Tyson mentioned that Newton invented Calculus before the age of 26. That reaction became a gif, and the meme was born.

Months later, here is Tyson reflecting on how it feels to be a meme, courtesy of On The Verge:

The prediction about Tyson’s reenactment of the meme becoming a new one? Yeah, it’s already happend.

  • Zuckerberg/Peres Facebook Meme Goes Viral

Ever since the latest update on Facebook allowed users to upload larger images to their wall and photo albums, memes have become more and more popular via the world’s largest social networking site (e.g. What My Friends Think I Do). Another meme has started to blast virally around Facebook, this time involving Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Israeli President Shimon Peres.

The meme involving Zuckerberg and Peres is an image of Peres about to write a statement on a chalkboard with Zuckerberg standing behind him. With this image, users can write whatever they want to display on the chalkboard via the Shimon Peres Says Facebook application.

The Zuckerberg/Peres meme is also starting to spread on Twitter as well:

Leap Year 2012 Humor: A Collection of Leap Day Memes

Reddit is truly a great place for web content, truth be told. With today being a Leap Day, Redditors are not disappointing with their unique way about things. We’ve seen numerous comical posts, and quite a few images / memes.

This post is an homage to some of the creations by Redditors. We’re not trying to compile a comprehensive Leap Day / Leap Year meme list, as that would take forever. Instead, we’re merely just highlighting some of the ones that made us chuckle.

  • Rage Faces In Real Life

    Rage Faces In Real Life

If you’re any kind of experienced Internet user, you’re probably awfully familiar with the rage face memes that permeate across a large number of platforms. While Reddit deserves a large amount of the credit for the growing the popularity surrounding these images, they’ve grown beyond just the fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu subreddit.

These faces have pretty much crossed over the mainstream; at least in relation to the Internet mainstream. While your local news may be confused by them; hell, maybe even the national media, too; if you’re any kind of regular Internet user, there’s little doubt you’ve come across some kind of rage face, be it accidentally or from a shared link on your social media platform of choice. Much like the “I Can Haz” group, the rage face community has created a “build your own” rage face maker, which only further indicates their popularity.

But what would these faces look like in real life? Considering that most were inspired by real life facial expressions–Bruce Lee, anyone?–we have something of an idea, but now, thanks to the folks at Pistol Shrimps, there’s no mistaking what these kinds of rage faces would look like if you could pull them off in person:

    Creepy or awesome? Or both?

As for the video’s popularity, since being upload on February 25, the Rage Comics In Real Life has acquired over 2.2 million views, with almost 40,000 likes. If that doesn’t clarify the popularity of this particular meme, I’m not sure anything will.

  • New Pokemon Drinking Board Game is Candyland for Adults

New Pokemon Drinking Board Game is Candyland for Adults

It is Tuesday night and you are looking to keep the party going. You have finished watching your Sailor Moon DVDs and are still hung over from playing the Meme drinking board game with your maintenance guy and three Kirby salesmen last night. Well, if you are stuck in 1996 or live in Portland, read on.

A new Pokemon drinking game popped on reddit Monday and is sure to get even the biggest geek socially lubricated and ready to battle. Almost every square on the white, yellow, and silver game board threatens to punish players by instructing them to drink up those Zimas or else! And if you do not like the fact that only 151 Pokemon are on the board the game creators tell players to go *%$@ themselves.

Upon further examination, I began to think that the creators are from North Korea considering the rigid and oppressive rule structures.

People who viewed this game have also commented that they do not believe they would survive the game considering almost every square requires the player to drink considerable quantities of liquor. While the game was intended for beer drinkers it is certain that other users will understand this factoid a little too late. But if you want to be a true Pokemon drinking champion, gamers like reddit user Batmanner posted say linked chat that you need to drink Sailor Jerry’s rum. What a puke fest!

For obvious reasons, playing this game with a buch of drunk friends around expensive electronic devices is moronic. To avoid a Guiness soaked iPad snafu, gamers have opted to laminate and mounted the picture of the board on foam core, which will cost you average Pikachu fan around $43.

  • The Meme Drinking Board Game: Imbibe With Your Favorite Internet Pals

The Meme Drinking Board Game: Imbibe With Your Favorite Internet Pals

Still trying to figure out what to do on your Friday night? You could go to the bars, but it’s crowded and you’re tired of paying eight bucks for a crappy beer. You could go to the movies – but then again that really cuts in on your beer drinking.

Here’s an idea: How about you gather some of your best friends, some good beer, and a die and sit down for a rousing round of the Meme Drinking Board Game.

The brainchild of reddit user kc_sharky, the game features many of the memes that reddit (and other sectors of the interwebs) love so dearly. And what’s even more impressive – the memes are used correctly. We start with Jimmy McMillan letting us know that whoever’s dice roll is too damn high gets to go first. We pass Socially Awkward Penguin, Scumbag Steve, High Expectations Asian Father, Good Guy Greg, and many many more. The winner is the first to reach Success Kid, who relishes in the fact that he won and everyone has to drink.

I think my favorite is Joseph Ducreux giving us an archaic rap about bros before hoes and then making all the girls drink. Not sure if the creator meant for it to work out like this, but both the Fry tiles and the Boromir Tile force players to go back to the “Wenches Imbibe” tile.

From the looks of the game, there’s going to be a lot of going back to the start, which means more drinking.

As far as your game pieces go – there’s no thimble or top hat here. You get to play with many an internet legend like Rick Astley, Business Cat, and even Ron Paul.

If you don’t want to take the time to print it out and play it as a real board game, you can play it online here.

Between this and Battleshots, everyone should have a pretty fun weekend.

  • “What My Friends Think I Do” Meme Popular on Facebook

Ever since the dawn of the latest update of Facebook, picture sizes within the Facebook feed have increased. This helps memes become more viral on the well-known social networking site, along with various cute ICanHasCheezburger pictures.

    • What my friends think I do
    • What my mom thinks I do
    • What society thinks I do
    • What my boss thinks I do

  • UC Davis Pepper Spraying Cop Is The Internet’s New Favorite Meme

UC Davis Pepper Spraying Cop Is The Internet’s New Favorite Meme

The events that took place on the UC Davis campus a few days ago are pretty hard to watch. But that doesn’t mean that people haven’t taken a good, hard look at the incident. People have drawn parallels to historical events involving protests – as well as used the brutal video to further the discussion surrounding the state of First Amendment rights in this country.

And of course, the internet has decided that it’s perfect meme fodder.

The most indelible image from the video that went viral last week is definitely UC Davis Campus Police Lieutenant John Pike casually pepper spraying the protestors, who appear to be sitting on the ground in an absolutely peaceful manner. The few-second clip of the high-powered, red-orange spray covering the faces of the students has been played thousands of times across news outlets since last Friday.

If you somehow have yet to see the video, check it out below:

Now, the image of Lt. Pike spraying the students has spawned its own Tumblr blog, the aptly titled Pepper Spraying Cop.

Little did we know that Pepper Spraying Cop has cracked down on so many famous moments in history!! This Tumblr will help document the long pepper spraying arm of this officer of the law!

And it does just that – by inserting the pepper spraying cop into various films, works of art, and famous photographs from history. Here are some of my favorite images from the blog:

Pepper Spray Cop ruins Abbey Road shoot –

Pepper Spray Cop Grinches Cindy Lou Who:

Pepper Spray Cop at the dawn of creation:

Pepper Spray Cop makes immolation a little worse:

Reddit has joined in the Lt. Pike meme fun as well. Some pertinent street art has been spotted. Only the spray has been replaced by butterflies:

Before I could think “That’s going to be a really popular t-shirt design pretty soon,” someone on reddit already made himself the t-shirt.

Memes pop up sometimes even when the source is decidedly less than funny. But they have a way of keeping things alive, and once you become a popular meme, the memory of you or your actions takes a long time to fade.

  • Steve Jobs Memes Pay Respect to a Visionary

The unfortunate death of Steve Jobs caused massive reverberations around the Internet in particular, as people all over the world paid their respects the one of the great visionaries to grace the tech industry. Twitter and Facebook were two main areas of focus for these messages, but social network outlets were not the only place people were expressing themselves.

A number of memes that paid respect to Apple’s fallen quickly hit the web as well, and the images sub category of Reddit.com did a great job of cataloging these tributes, as well as capturing just how much the death of Steve Jobs resonated around the world.

To help keep the memory of Steve Jobs alive, we’ve collected some of the best memes that have popped up since the announcement. After looking at these, it’s pretty clear just how much Steve Jobs meant to his fans and the tech industry in general:

While Reddit has been a fantastic source for these images, even some in the community go a little overboard, as the following collection demonstrates nicely:

    Reddit Overload

Cleary, Reddit members everywhere wanted to get in on the Steve Jobs karma love.

The downpour of Steve Jobs related memes and images just shows how much “pull” he had, especially with Internet users. Whether you are an Apple fan or not — I fall into the “not” category — you cannot deny the impact and the vision Jobs had for the tech industry as a whole. Hell, the iPhone single-handedly turned the Mac brand into a legitimate destination for video games, something the company still struggles with in regards to their home computers.

Just ask the Angry Birds creators, a group that openly acknowledges the role the iPhone played in making the game into the worldwide success it became.

Of course, Jobs’ footprint goes well, well beyond the success of the iPhone, but it’s also obvious just how crucial the device was to the overall success of Apple, which has skyrocketed into becoming the world’s most valuable brand.

All thanks to the genius of Steve Jobs.

  • Iron Mic Viral Freestyler Eli Porter Gets A Documentary

Iron Mic Viral Freestyler Eli Porter Gets A Documentary

Do you remember the viral video “Iron Mic: Eli Porter vs. Envy“? It’s been making it’s way around the Internet since late 2007, and has been seen over 5 million times.

If you’re having a hard time placing the video… it’s the one with the timeless line: I’m the Best Man. I Did It.

To give you brief rundown on the video, Eli Porter was a high school student at Chamblee High School in Georgia. He appeared on a student produced rap battle show entitled “Iron Mic“. The show saw Eli go up against a fellow student named Envy. After a comical battle between the two, a 2-1 decision was made and Envy was declared the winner. You can see the original video below.

There is no questioning the videos comedic value. But, after viewing you’re probably left with several questions you wished you had an answer for. Here are a few of mine:

1.) Is Eli truly the best, as he so claimed?
2.) Why was the host rubbing on the middle judge?
3.) What was that loooong pause all about?
4.) Why did Envy win the battle?
5.) What’s the deal with the heart vignette?

    So many questions.

Well, we’re in luck. As our questions will finally be answered… all of them. A new documentary has came out, People’s Champion: Behind The Battle, which breaks down each moment of the four-and-a-half video Internet meme.

The documentary explores almost every possible angle… talking to teachers, the students running the cameras, the producers, the judges, and even Eli Porter himself. People’s Champion runs about thirty minutes, and is worth a watch.

  • Chinese Photoshop Gaffe Goes Viral

To the scrutinizing eyes of the internet, no Photoshop disaster will go unnoticed. That doesn’t just apply to the Western web, but also to those in the East.

Chinese internet users have taken a fairly egregious editing error and run with it. Late Sunday evening, an article was posted to the government website of Huili County, China. Huili county is part of the Sichuan Provine and is under the adminstration of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture.

The article, about upgrades to road conditions within the county, had a photo with three government officials on the scene who appear to be discussing the road conditions. The only problem is that the photo is so clearly photoshopped that it’s laughable. Apparently one user who spotted this error posted it to a Chinese internet forum and said:

I had nothing to do today so I visited the website for our county government. The headline story was about the upgrade for the road to the countryside. I looked at the photo and I almost coughed out half a liter of blood! Even a rank amateur like myself can tell that this was a PhotoShop job, and they had the nerve to put this on the home page!

So many people visited the government website that it was down for a brief period of time. Here’s the photo in question –

Chinese internet users took the photo began creating their own Photoshop masterpieces. I present to you, some winners of the Levitating Government Officials meme, courtesy of the Chinese site tt.mop.com –

When this began to go viral, the Huili County Government went into damage control mode. They set up an account on Weibo, which is China’s version of Twitter, just to address the Photoshop faux pas. On Weibo, they said that government officials did in fact go on site for the road inspection, but the original photos weren’t very clear. They also said that they learned a lesson from all this and thanked the internet community for their criticism.

They also posted what are supposed to be the original photos from the road inspection. Check them out for yourself but in my opinion, the argument could be made that they still look a bit off.

Photoshop disasters are some of the best things on the internet, hands down. If you have some time to kill, may I suggest browsing through the Top 20 Photoshop Disasters of 2010 as judged by PSDisasters.com.
