  • McDonald’s Dollar Menu to Offer Items That Cost More than $1

McDonald’s Dollar Menu to Offer Items That Cost More than $1

You know how McDonald’s Dollar Menu gets a little skimpier with each passing year? There was a time when you could get two slices of cheese on that double cheeseburger for a buck instead of that McDouble with its lonely slice of cheese. Well, McDonald’s Dollar Menu is about to get revamped and better items will be added. The catch? You’ll have to pay more than a dollar.

McDonald’s confirmed that it will be adding some new items to its Dollar Menu, such as a 20-piece nugget and burgers with more than a single patty or cheese slice. Don’t get too excited, though–those items won’t cost a dollar. These items will be added under McDonald’s new Dollar Menu & More starting in November.

According to a spokesperson for McDonald’s, the fast food chain will change “some elements of the dollar menu, [while] adding two more tiers for our customers.” In addition to the traditional Dollar Menu staples, the new menu will include items for $2 and $5.

With the introduction of the Dollar Menu & More, McDonald’s will do away with the Extra Value Menu, which was introduced in 2012 and hasn’t done so well. Since the Dollar Menu was introduced about ten years ago, it has accounted for “13-15% of sales,” according to Consumerist. During the recession, McDonald’s was one chain that saw its profits increase, as more people looked to the cheap offerings the Dollar Menu provided at mealtimes.

What do you think about McDonald’s changing its Dollar Menu? Respond below. A few folks on Twitter are quite distressed:

In other McDonald’s-related news, if you have kids (or buy Happy Meals for reasons of nostalgia), you’ll notice another change rolling out at McDonald’s soon–books will be added to Happy Meals beginning November 1 for a limited time. Some customers are still getting over the renovations that attempted to make the fast food chain look more upscale (but just felt weird), and now McDonald’s is rolling in Dollar Menu and Happy Meal changes in the same month? Oh, boy.

  • McDonald’s CEO Says, ‘We Don’t Sell Junk Food’

McDonald’s CEO Says, ‘We Don’t Sell Junk Food’

This week, during McDonald’s annual shareholders meeting, McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson fielded a question about nutrition from a 9-year-old girl.

The girl, who identified herself as Hannah, took issue with the famous fast food company selling food that isn’t good for children using “toys and cartoon characters.” She claims that children her age are suffering from obesity and diabetes, and ends her statement with the question, “Mr. Thompson, don’t you want kids to be healthy so they can live a happy life?”

Sure, it’s a loaded question. One she was no doubt coached into asking by adults who used her as a sympathetic prop. However, Thompson’s answer shows that he may not have been prepared to fend off such a question at the shareholder’s meeting.

Thompson begins his answer by saying, “First off, we don’t sell junk food Hannah.” With junk food generally defined as food with low nutritional value, Thompson’s statement implies that all of McDonald’s food has at least a better-than-low nutritional value.

Thompson goes on to provide a personal anecdote, stating that his children eat McDonald’s, but that they also cook “foods and veggies” at home. He points out that McDonald’s sells apples and salads, and says that the company will try to provide products like kiwi-on-a-stick and pineapple in the future. Thompson’s response, in full:

Hannah, thank you very much for your question and by the way it’s good to meet you upfront. Couple of things Hanna. First off, we don’t sell junk food, Hannah. My kids also eat McDonald’s, when they were about your size to my son who is with us was a little bit bigger – he was a football player – and also they cook with me at home. I love to cook, we cook a lot of foods and veggies at home. We serve a lot of foods and veggies at McDonald’s and are trying to sell even more with the apples that we introduced into the Happy Meal. We serve different foods and different variety. I was telling you a little bit earlier about things we would like to introduce even more, there is a affinity for them, like kiwi on a stick and pineapples, and we serve salads ,and we serve those for a dollar on the Dollar Menu and they are very affordable. And so there’s a lot of things that we’ve done, our chicken nugget happy meals, fat free milk, both. We also just changed the chocolate factory milk. We are making a lot of changes at McDonald’s and we will continue to. I think it’s really great that you want to continue eating more fruits and more vegetables. I honestly hope even more kids do. I know that as my kids came up sometimes I had to nudge them a little bit more to eat some more fruits and vegetables, but they did eat quite a bit of fruits and vegetables and that’s what we served in our household as well. So thanks so much for the question. Next question?

  • Living Social Offers 5 Big Macs & Fries For $13, Twitter Doesn’t Approve

Most of you are probably familiar with Living Social, they offer a new deal each day to their members. Well today they’ve put out the largest national fast food daily deal – ever. The deal is a $13 voucher booklet, redeemable for five individual Big Macs and five individual large french fries. Snagging this deal will net you a savings of 50%.

According to Teter Sterling, Vice President of Marketing for McDonald’s, “Both LivingSocial members and McDonald’s customers are looking for delicious food at a great value, and this deal hits the sweet spot for both personal purchases and holiday gifts.

Best. Burger. Ever…Big Mac. Best. Deal. Ever…@LivingSocial. C http://t.co/s0BioD7C 4 info 1 hour ago via CoTweet · powered by @socialditto

At the time of this writing 67,557 of the voucher booklets had been sold. If you do the math, thats 337,785 Big Macs. That’s a lot of special sauce McDonald’s will be slinging around this holiday season.

A little FYI: each Big Mac contains 580 calories, couple that with large fries, you’re looking at 1,150 calories.

As I’m sure you can imagine, McDonald’s began receiving flak on Twitter questioning their quality of meat… you know, the usually. It got so bad that McDonald’s tweeted out the following, in attempt to stop some of the negativity:

    FYI – All of McDonald’s
hamburgers are made with 100-percent USDA-inspected beef. 49 minutes ago via CoTweet · powered by @socialditto

It should be noted that purchasers of the deal will receive individual vouchers for each item, not one big voucher. So you won’t have to order the 5 Big macs & 5 large fries at one time… though we’re sure some of you will, I can see a Tumblr account coming out of this.
