  • Mr. Poo Is India’s Anti-Public Defecation Mascot

Warning: Those who have a weak stomach should not read this story.

According to Unicef, around 620 million people (half the population) in India alone poops in public; that’s around 143,300,482 lbs. of feces every day. The rampant rise of excrement leads to higher risks in bacterial and virus contaminations of water, which is, to say the least, very unhealthy for the public and can cause diarrhea in children.

So, as a way to clean up the streets, Unicef came up with this great idea for their public health campaign in India by making a giant dancing anthropomorphic turd named Mr.Poo who will attempt to French kiss you. The whole campaign is dubbed “Take Poo to the Loo”, which seeks to spread awareness and garner support through pledges that will be sent to Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India; people can also donate, which allows for, according to the site, “long-term sustainable solutions for children of India to ensure that every child gets the best start in life.”

According to The Independent, since the start of the campaign via YouTube videos, people have had mixed reactions. Some commenters think of the campaign as “degrading”, while others criticized the videos for targeting audiences that are most likely already using toilets.

There’s a ton of disgusting animations involving Mr. Poo and his pals loitering and leaving stains everywhere. Watch at your own risk:

Mr. Poo will also bother you in public:

And if you really want to get into it, there’s a behind the scenes making of the poo song… which is a bunch of guys in a room emulating fart, toilet, and dripping sounds with drums and synthesizers, it’s actually pretty well done:

There’s a Mr. Poo Facebook game if you’re into that kind of stuff.

  • ‘Cookie Monster’ Arrested For Pushing a Two-Year-Old

Cookie Monster is well-known to have an obsession (addiction?) to cookies, but it seems that the blue Sesame Street character can also become a bit belligerent when he doesn’t get paid.

According to a New York Post report, a man dressed as Cookie Monster in Times Square assaulted a two-year-old boy this weekend.

The man, named Osvaldo Quiroz-Lopez, is reported to have posed for a picture with the child and then pressured the boy’s mother for two dollars (for cookies, presumably). According to police, when the mother refused to tip, the man “cursed her” and pushed the boy to the ground. Quiroz-Lopez was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

This isn’t the first time costumed characters have run afoul of the law in New York City. In December 2012, a man dressed as the video game character Mario in Times Square was arrested for placing his hand on a woman’s thigh. In June 2012, a man named Adam Sandler (not that Adam Sandler) was arrested while wearing an Elmo costume and going on an anti-Semitic tirade in Central Park.

  • Before There Was Bugdroid, These Terrifying Creatures Were Proposed As Android Mascots

Most Android fans know and love Bugdroid, the adorable mascot of the brand. Even if you’re an Apple or Windows Phone fan, you can’t deny the little guy has a charm that’s unmatched in the mobile industry. The funny thing is – Bugdroid wasn’t the first mascot proposed for the brand as Dan Morrill has just revealed his terrifying Dandroids.

In a recent Google+ post, Morrill shared the Android mascots he created as part of the internal developer launch of the first Android SDK in 2007. He thought the slides they were presenting had no “eye candy” so he created what he calls the “first proposed mascots for Android.” Check ’em out:

Morrill says that his creations “had a brief flurry of minor popularity amongst the team.” The little guys were even lovingly called “Dandroids” after their creator. Shortly thereafter, Irina Blok came through with her brilliant Bugdroid design that has become the face of the operating system. While there is a certain “charm” to Morrill’s original designs, I think we can all agree that Bugdroid was the right choice for the Android brand.

  • Mascots: Best Brand Accesories on Social Media

Apparently, brand mascots are back in a big way. With the ever increasing popularity of social media, characters who promote a branded lifestyle and assign a particular face to a product, are once again in demand.

Carol Phillips, president of the consulting group Brand Amplitude comments on the utility of mascots:

” [They are] the gift that keeps on giving,”

“They never get in trouble with the law. They don’t up their fees. You can use them for a long, long time.”

Brand Mascots get people talking about products without even knowing it in many cases. This little tree is the newest mascot from Stub Hub. It features tickets as the leaves to its branches. This little guy has created a lot of buzz for the company, especially on social media sites.

Look at some of the reaction:

Come on! How else could Stub Hub be part of everyones conversation without the addition of this mascot? They couldn’t. Basically, this little tree has everybody talking about Stub Hub. Next time you need tickets, what’s one of the first associations you’re going to make? Creepy tree equals Stub Hub, equals ticket sales. Cha Ching!

Insurance companies are great at the mascot product positioning game. Who doesn’t know this next character? That’s right, it’s Flo from the progressive commercials. Most of us didn’t even realize she was a mascot, but when you think Flo, you think insurance.

Listen to how people have let Flo become part of their lives:

She’s not just an actor in a commercial anymore, Flo has a whole parallel life that she leads in consumers minds. People think about Flo and have conversations about her. What about this little guy below? He’s been the subject of a lot of weird conversations and off-color jokes, I am sure. The Geico Gecko has to be one of the most famous mascots ever.

This is how people think about that little gecko:

Seriously, without these great mascots none of these folks would be carrying on conversations about Stub Hub or car insurance. Companies are beginning to realize advertising on social media platforms is vital to product awareness and marketshare.

To get the most out of those spots, marketeers need to capitalize on mascots the same way television has. We are constantly bombarded with different brands and different products, but one thing that seems to always stick in our minds is characters. Characters go beyond just what is presented in a commercial, they take on lives of their own.
