  • The Avengers International Hulk, Cap TV Spots

    (image)

The studio is throwing “The Avengers” trailers at us faster than we can process. Just like last week, this time we get 2 more trailers. These ones show the Hulk and Captain America. While neither movie really gives anything away, they do a really good job reenforcing my idea that “The Avengers” is going to be freaking awesome!

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson. It is set for release on May 4th, 2012.

  • The Avengers Actor Defends Superhero Movies

    (image)

Superhero movies are up in the air with serious movie buffs as far as the seriousness of the art. Are they in fact art? Or ar they just a ploy by the studio to make a quick buck? For whatever reason, the non-comic movie fans like to look at films like Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Spiderman 3, and say “see? terrible movies!” They do not want to look at The Dark Knight and the increadible Joker played by Heath Leger. They don’t want to look at the classically trained Christopher Reeves playing Superman.

Well actor Tom Hiddleston, who plays villain Loki in this summers “The Avengers“, has something to say about all of this in a recent blog post he made for the Guardian in England. In the post he talks about his personal childhood with superheros saying: “I grew up watching Superman. As a child, when I first learned to dive into a swimming pool, I wasn’t diving, I was flying, like Superman. I used to dream of rescuing a girl I had a crush on (my Lois Lane) from a playground bully (General Zod). Reeve, to my mind, was the first real superhero.”

He goes on to explain that “Actors in any capacity, artists of any stripe, are inspired by their curiosity, by their desire to explore all quarters of life, in light and in dark, and reflect what they find in their work. Artists instinctively want to reflect humanity, their own and each other’s, in all its intermittent virtue and vitality, frailty and fallibility.” This is the reason Christopher Reeves chose to play Superman even though his contemporaries on broadway mocked him.

As far as how superheros are perfect characters to play, he explains that “The Hulk is the perfect metaphor for our fear of anger; its destructive consequences, its consuming fire. There’s not a soul on this earth who hasn’t wanted to “Hulk smash” something in their lives. And when the heat of rage cools, all that we are left with is shame and regret. Bruce Banner, the Hulk’s humble alter ego, is as appalled by his anger as we are. That other superhero Bruce – Wayne – is the superhero-Hamlet: a brooding soul, misunderstood, alone, for ever condemned to avenge the unjust murder of his parents. Captain America is a poster boy for martial heroism in military combat: the natural leader, the war hero. Spider-Man is the eternal adolescent – Peter Parker’s arachnid counterpart is an embodiment of his best-kept secret – his independent thought and power.”

The awesomeness today is a report from Nightline, a behind the scenes featurette, and a bunch of behind the scenes photos.

  • “The Avengers” Posters By Mondo Are Amazing

“The Avengers” comes to theaters on May 4th. Is it going to be a huge movie? Um, I’d venture to say that this movie is going to be the biggest movie in years and has a real chance to knock the terrible environmental message movie “Avatar” off of it’s lofty perch. The big indicators that you have that the movie will be huge include the $100 million plus advertising budget, and the constant bombardment of new cool drawings and videos.

In a Huffington Post exclusive, we get some new awesome posters of Hawkeye and the Black Widow. These posters are the first of 6 Avengers posters. Maybe 7 if you include Nick Fury. Check out these super stylized prints:

Here is the newest trailer featuring Iron Man and Thor “training!”:

  • What If “The Avengers” Were Dinosaurs?

If you are anything like me, you have been asking your self one question these past few days. What if the Avengers were all dinosaurs? Well my friend, the wait is over!

The artists name is Teryll Whitlatch. He had this to say about making the awesome drawings:

“It was fun deciding what dinosaurs should be what characters. I ended up with an Ankylosaur as Iron Man (a no-brainer, as this animal is naturally armored), a Parasaurolophus as Captain America, just because I thought with that crest it would look really funny, a Triceratops as Thor, especially since when it grows up it is actually a Torosaurus, hence “Thor”-osaurus, and a T-rex as the Hulk so I could give it really muscularly odd little arms. It’s a breath of fresh air to do fan art, and any excuse to draw dinosaurs is a good one!”

Check out the awesome drawings below, and try really hard to choose your favorite!

  • X-Men Vs. Mad Men In These Awesome Posters

With the highly popular and highly rated AMC show Mad Men in it’s second season, it’s time to give those hooch swigging, womanizing douches a taste of the The Ol’ Canucklehead! This great stylized poster features Wolverine eviscerating a guy who has the look of a character in the Mad Men TV show.

    (image)

The second poster features Emma Frost (The White Queen) standing in the hall with Mad Men character Don Draper. Maybe it is a before and after pic. As you can see it looks as though Emma is using her telepathic abilities to do something. Maybe its to call Logan to take care of the guy. Both posters are drawn by artist Axel Ryan.

  • Marvel Comics to Receive Free Digital Download Codes

In a move that is very un-Disney like, Marvel has announced that, beginning June 2012, all Marvel super hero comics priced at $3.99 will include codes for free digital copies of those same issues on the Marvel Comics app for iOS and Android devices at no extra cost!

“We’re committed to bringing fans the best value in comics. By including codes for free digital copies in all our $3.99 super hero comics, we’re doing just that” said David Gabriel, SVP of Sales, Marvel Entertainment. “We’ve seen a tremendous response to the digital codes in Avenging Spider-Man, our Season One graphic novels and the Ultimate Comics line. The positive reactions from both retailers and fans make it clear that including these codes with our books drives customers into comic stores on a repeated basis.”

Marvel made comic book history in 2011 by announcing all titles in the Ultimate Comics line would include codes for free digital copies on the Marvel Comics app, with unrivaled incentives for comic shop retailers. Then, in 2012, Marvel announced the acclaimed Season One graphic novels would also include similar codes making them the first graphic novels to ever include codes for free digital copies at no extra cost.

“At Marvel, we’re always looking for ways to bring the worlds of print and digital media together to deliver the best comics experience for our fans,” said Peter Phillips, SVP & GM, Marvel Digital Media. “With this next step, fans will soon be able to buy their comics from their favorite retailers but also enjoy them on their mobile devices and tablets, all at no extra charge. Welcome to the Revolution.”

  • Marvel Unveils “Marvel ReEvolution” at SXSW

Marvel Comics is embracing the digital age more than ever as they reveal ReEvolution at South by Southwest (SXSW). Since the popularity of the tablet has grown in recent years, comic book creators have adapted to this new medium by converting their publications to digital formats. Marvel is taking this one step further with “Marvel Infinite Comics”, a new comic book format, and “Marvel AR”, a new app that allows users to be further immersed in their comic book experience. Both are to be released with Avengers vs. X-Men #1 on April 4th.

Marvel Infinite Comics is a new digital medium that allows creators to add motion and 3D effects to a comic within the typical format. Creators will now make the comic within this format instead of doing the drawings on paper and then converting them to digital.

“We call these Marvel Infinite Comics because the storytelling possibilities are, frankly, infinite. Writers and artists now have a whole host of new tools at their disposal to redefine the comic book medium,” said Alex Alonso, Marvel comics Editor in Chief. “Current tablets and smartphones, along with comiXology’s Guided View technology, allow us to develop new, full length stories for a different medium that are very much truly comics—but experienced by readers in a way no other major company has ever executed.”

Marvel AR features include the ability to scan comics with the Marvel AR logo and view them with the app. Added 3D effects and bonus material bring the comics to life. Users can view original pencil drawings and behind the scenes content from the creation of their favorite comics.

In an interview with Forbes Magazine, Alonso outlines the details of Marvel ReEvolution and the future he sees for comic book technology:

  • Superman Versus The Hulk: Fan Film Excellence

How many of you have wanted to see two of the most powerful entities in the comic book universe square off in battle royale outside of the comic book pages? Since neither Marvel or DC Comics will cross their content streams in the world of movies–crossover comic stories don’t count; nor do video games–it’s up to the fans to provide what’s missing.

And that’s just what Michael Habjan did by bringing us installments of his “Superman vs Hulk: The Fight” series. There have been three of these installments of the fan-made series, with the latest one dropping earlier this week. Part one of the fight hit YouTube on June 11, 2011, and after over 4 million views, the incentive to continue with further “episodes” was obvious. It should be noted the series began with an introduction video before the fight episodes, acting almost as a trailer for the upcoming videos.

Note how Habjan made his Superman look like Christopher Reeves:

This led to the first episode of the fight, which dropped six months after the initial video, which gives you an idea about how long it takes Habjan to make these videos. Next up is the first installment of the Hulk/Superman throwdown:

For part two, Habjan concentrated on improving the look of the models he used for both Superman and the Hulk, and the results are noticeable:

Notice how it ends with something of a cliffhanger? Will the Hulk pound Superman into dust or will Kal-El be able to turn the tables and get the upper hand? Since Habjan has already indicated Part 3 will soon be available, it’s clear the fight between the two comic book power houses isn’t over. Not even close. As for the production and the credits, Habjan lists them over at video’s YouTube page, while acknowledging he’s not affiliated with either Marvel or DC. With that in mind, it’s a little surprising neither company has stepped in and issued a cease and desist request.

    The credits, according to Habjan:

This is the second part to my ongoing animation project, a tribute project to Superman and The Incredible Hulk. As you’ll notice, the models and overall look has evolved and will continue to do so in future sequences. I’m already working on a new look for the Hulk on the next one. I got professional help this time in the music and sound design department, provided by the talented Francois Gratecap, which has made the whole project that much better. So my thanks to him.

Hat-tip to Geeks are Sexy for pointing the second episode out.

  • Marvel and Visa Team Up To Teach Kids About Finances

Marvel Comics and Visa Inc. have teamed up to create a new, one-of-a-kind financial literacy comic book called Avengers: Saving The Day. Combining Marvel’s iconic characters, including the Avengers and Spider-Man, with Visa’s financial literacy expertise, this free comic introduces children to basic money concepts.

“In today’s increasingly complex financial world, we must find creative ways to help parents and educators teach children the fundamentals of money management,” said Jason Alderman, Senior Director of Global Financial Education, Visa Inc. “A comic book with Spider-Man and the Avengers is the perfect device for making the sometimes dull subject of financial literacy entertaining and educational,” Alderman added.

This financial literacy comic was created by a well-known team of Marvel storytellers, including veteran writer James Asmus (Generation Hope). Fan favorite Andrea Di Vito (Avengers Academy) designed the comic which features the world’s most popular superheroes including Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Hulk and Black Widow. The collectors’ item comic also features a new cover by comic’s legend Tom Grummett. “A wise man once said that with great power there must come great responsibility and that certainly applies to managing your finances,” said Marvel editor Bill Rosemann. “In an uncertain world, understanding how to save and properly budget your hard-earned money is one of the keys to personal success. The Avengers are not only the world’s greatest heroes, but they also know a thing or three about financial health. After all, Iron Man hasn’t managed his vast wealth of Stark Enterprises by accident, and as Spider-Man learns, you don’t have to be a millionaire to be a saving hero,” said Rosemann.

Avengers: Saving The Day is a 16-page comic book with a fast-moving plot revolving around Spider-Man and the Avengers learning about personal finance, while battling the evil Mole Man during an attempted heist. The book is accompanied by a teacher’s guide that uses Marvel’s characters to introduce children to basic financial concepts such as budgeting, saving and banking. Available at no cost, both in print and online at www.practicalmoneyskills.com/avengers, Avengers: Saving The Day is being released around the world and is available in Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, English, French, Portugese, Russian and Spanish.

Comic Book Companies and Financial institutions are not usually linked together. Occasionally you will get something like the great Visa commercial with comedian Jerry Seinfeld and the legendary Superman.

  • The Avengers, Spider-Man, And More Marvel Graphic Novels Come To iTunes

Listen up, comics fans – you can now get dozens of Marvel graphic novels on iTunes.

Marvel has just announced 80 titles that are now available through the iBooks app or by simply heading to iTunes.

Today, Marvel has entered a bold new era in digital comics. For the first time ever, classic stories—from the first appearance of the Avengers to the “death” of Captain America—will now be available for purchase on Apple’s iBookstore. With an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, Marvel fans across the world can now purchase over 80 graphic novels with fan-favorite characters like Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Spider-Man.

Not only that, but titles like Marvel Zombies, John Carter: World of Mars, Ender’s Game: Battle School, and X-Men: Second Coming also adorn the list of titles available at launch. Marvel says that they will be adding titles every week.

As a gift to fans, they are offering New Avengers Vol. 1: Breakout for free. “Fate has brought them together, and now Captain America wants to make it permanent! Who will take his hand and join the new Avengers?” You’re just going to have to read it to find out.

Marvel already has their own iPad app, but this move puts the longer graphic novels available for the masses through the iBookstore.

In other Avengers news, the second official trailer dropped today, and man does it look good. You should really go check it out…oh well, what the hell – let’s just watch it together:

  • Stan Lee Revealed As A Playable Character In New Spiderman Game

Stan Lee is Marvel, Marvel is Stan Lee. So it makes perfect sense that he has a cameo in nearly every single thing that Marvel makes right? But up until now he has never been a playable character in a video game. This new Spiderman game bucks that trend.

Stan Lee is the creator of many characters in comics history. Including iconic names such as: Spider Man, the X-Men, The Hulk, Thor, The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, The Silver Surfer, Iron Man, and Daredevil just to name a few.

The game is being made by Quebec, Canada developer Beenox. They also did the last 2 Spiderman games: the awesome “Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions”, and not so awesome “Spider-Man Edge of time.” Beenox is trying to be for Spiderman what Rocksteady is to Batman, or what High Moon Studios is to Transformers.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” game, based on the upcoming 2012 blockbuster movie, is set for release on the PS3, XBox 360, Wii, and 3DS this summer. Check out the video below to hear Mr. Lee talk about his Cameo.

Here is the first trailer for the game.

  • Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Battles Onto Vita Today

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Battles Onto Vita Today

Alongside all the great content already hitting the PlayStation Vita today, Capcom is releasing Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the titular handheld.

For those who don’t know about the fantastic Marvel vs. Capcom series, imagine taking all the greatest characters and fighters from both the Marvel and Capcom universes and mashing them together in one giant fighter.

While Capcom might have some raised some ire among gamers over their decision to release Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 so soon after the release of the original, the decision seems to be a good one.

The expanded roster is worth the $40 asking price alone as it adds 12 new characters to the roster bringing the total character above 50. Some of the new characters include fan favorites Phoenix Wright and Rocket Raccoon.

    nemesismvc

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 also adds some much needed balancing tweaks to the main game that make the game far more competitive but easier for new players to ease themselves into the mayhem. Players can also watch the other fighters duke it out live over the Internet with the game’s Spectator mode.

The game’s transition to Vita suffers no harm as its a nearly flawless port of the console versions. The only difference is that players can take the game on the go with them. It’s going to be my preferred version as I love playing fighters on handhelds over consoles.

    ghostridermvc

The reviews so far confirm my suspicions that the game has turned out to be a great treat for portable fighting fans. You won’t want to miss this one, folks. Let Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 take you for a ride.

  • 104th Annual American Toy Fair: Care Bears And Ninja Turtles Still Big

Technology was the big seller this past year. While physical toy sales fell by over two percent, iPad and other tablets sold like hot cakes at breakfast time. Toymakers have latched on to that trend and are hoping to turn things around this year by integrating the physical toy into applications for tablet-style devices.

EVP of Marketing for Jakks Pacific Inc., Jeremy Padawer comments on what motivates sales:

“Although the down economy still presents many challenges, at the end of the day, kids will always want the latest and greatest toys. Technology and value will continue to be key factors in purchasing decisions,”

Mattel for example, is now going to offer a scratch resistant toy car that can be ran across the screen of an iPad on virtual racetracks (AppCessories). Hasbro offers a gaming platform just for younger children and Crayola offers another gaming app. that would fall under the AppCessories category.

Adrienne Appell, toy trends specialist with the Toy Industry Association comments on the trend:

“It’s a nice way to bridge the generation gap because a lot of these games are games that adults are going to have fun playing too,”

While it may be a current trend, I don’t know if I would be passing off my $600 iPad to my kids so they can play cars on it. An entirely separate gaming system might be okay, but I think it would still be pricey for something that will most likely be cast aside in a couple months. Regardless, that is probably why the old favorites are still a big hit.

What are those old favorites? The same stuff we had when we were kids; Legos, Care Bears, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and other comic book-based action figures are still the big hits at the show. I believe these are still favorites because they allow children to make believe and fantasize about the characters and their adventures; it’s good for stretching their imaginations. True, interactive games on the iPad and other gaming systems may be superior for learning and instruction, but sometimes playtime is just playtime.

I think it’s is very interesting that toy makers choose to bring back old favorites every ten years rather than creating new characters and providing different icons for a different generations. Perhaps there isn’t enough creativity in the business? I guess we haven’t come with anything better since Transformers, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Care Bears stole the show in the 1980’s and 90’s. That’s kind of sad.

  • Marvel: Avengers Alliance Coming Soon To Facebook

This year we will see an Avengers movie release, and with that we’ll also see tie-ins from all forms of media. Video games, action figures, comic books, television shows and so on. One such tie-in is a Facebook game, titled: Marvel Avengers Alliance.

The game will follow its own independent storyline, which involves a universe threatening event called “The Pulse”. This makes Marvel’s stable of villains even more powerful, and they are targeting New York City. The player’s role is that of a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, tasked with putting together a team of heroes to stop the threat.

Based upon what has been shown so far, all of the Marvel staples looks to be represented: Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and The Hulk. On the villain side of things we have: Green Goblin, Loki, Dr. Doom, and Whiplash somehow made the cut.

Being a Facebook game, the gameplay looks to be a mix of RPG and click based action. You will level your heroes up, and unlock special abilities as you progress. It is being developed by a Facebook savvy company, Playdom, who’s released titles such as: Gardens of Time, Deep Realms, Sorority Life, and Wild Ones. Quite an eclectic portfolio.

The game is slated for a Q1 2012 release, and there’s an official Marvel: Avengers Alliance Facebook page you can follow. Marvel has a teaser trailer which you can watch below. Enjoy.
