  • Denise Thiem: Body Found in Spain Identified as Hers

    Denise Thiem lived in Arizona. The 41-year-old went missing five months ago as she walked along an ancient Catholic pilgrimage route in northern Spain called the Camino de Santiago. Sadly, a body was discovered on a farm in Spain on Friday. Spanish police confirmed on Saturday the body is that of Denise Thiem.

    Just prior to discovering Denise Thiem’s body, police detained the man who owns the farm. Spanish television stations have featured reports showing the suspect, whose name is Miguel Ángel Muñoz Blas, handcuffed and being led away by authorities. Police in that region say the man has a police record and that Denise Thiem’s death is likely related to reports of recent threats and harassment along the Camino.

    Ms. Thiem quit her job in Phoenix in 2014 to travel the world. Prior to arriving in Spain in March, she spent time in Asia. She went missing on April 5-Easter Sunday.

    The Camino de Santiago has a big tourist draw. Authorities didn’t want to admit that Denise Thiem’s disappearance might be related to recent threats made to those along the route for this reason. Pressure from Thiem’s family and friends prompted Senator John McCain to appeal to Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy last month, requesting that the F.B.I. become involved in the search for the American woman.

    The director general of the Spanish police, Ignacio Cosidó, announced positive identification of Denise Thiem’s body via Twitter. That message translates into English as, “Following months of intense investigations, our agents have found the body of Denise and detained the alleged perpetrator.”

    Close friends and family members of Denise Thiem set up a Facebook page called Help Us Find Denise.

    The last entry on the page was clearly made prior to positive identification of her body.

    A film about the Camino de Santiago called The Way starred actor Martin Sheen. It inspired Denise Thiem to travel there and walk the Catholic pilgrimage. How sad that her lifelong yearning to travel the world ended in tragedy.

    Martin Sheen Joins Netflix’s ‘Grace and Frankie’

    Grace and Frankie, the upcoming Netflix comedy series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, has cast its first male lead – Martin Sheen.

    Sheen will play a man who plans to leave his wife for another man, who is married to his wife’s nemesis. The show is written and created by Friends creator Marta Kauffman, as well as Howard J. Morris. Like many Netflix originals, the first season will consist of 13 episodes. We recently learned that The Help‘s Tate Taylor had signed on to direct. It’ll be his debut in the world of television directing.

    Here’s Netflix’s official description of the show:

    The single-camera comedy focuses on nemeses Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) facing the last chapter of their lives, though not in the way they expected. When their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married, the women find their lives both turned upside down and to their dismay, permanently intertwined Eventually, to their surprise, they find they have each other.

    The Hollywood Reporter says that Sheen will play Fonda’s husband.

    “Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever and it’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix. The show created for them by Marta and Howard is warm, very funny and anything but wholesome. We can’t wait,” said Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the announcement.

    Grace and Frankie has an unspecified 2015 release date.

  • Kate Mara Asked Rooney Mara for David Fincher Advice

    House of Cards star Kate Mara, 31, admitted in a recent interview that she asked her sister Rooney Mara for advice on working with director David Fincher in the hit Netflix series.

    “I ask my sister for advice if I’m ever questioning whether to take a job. I called her for advice on Fincher when I first started working with him.”

    Rooney Mara, 28, worked with Fincher on 2010’s The Social Network and in the 2011 movie adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Scandinavian thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

    Mara has been acting a few years longer than her younger sister.

    “It’s such a special thing to have a family member doing the same job as you. She didn’t start acting until much later, but it makes me feel sort of looked-after, having her and knowing that she “gets” it,” she said.

    Mara has been busy promoting Season Two of House of Cards which released February 14 on Netflix.

    The political drama is a Netflix original series starring Kevin Spacey as scheming politician Frank Underwood and Robin Wright as his wife Claire. Mara stars as political journalist Zoe Barnes. Barnes is killed in the first episode of Season Two,

    Of her departure from the show, Mara has said “… I was bummed to leave, but I was also so excited about what we had done.”

    Next up for Mara is the April release of the science fiction thriller Transcendence in which she stars opposite Johnny Depp.

    She’s also starring in the true-life thriller Captive which is scheduled for a 2014 release. It was recently announced that she’s been cast in the remake of The Fantastic Four.

    Rooney Mara starred in 2013’s Side Effects with Jude Law and Channing Tatum and in the critically acclaimed Her which has been nominated for five Oscar Awards.

    She stars opposite Martin Sheen in the British drama Trash, which is scheduled for a May 2014 release in the UK.
