  • Mars: War Logs Delayed, New Localization Coming

Back at the end of April, Mars: War Logs was released on PC to mediocre reviews. Critics praised the action RPG’s setting, ideas, and the ambition of developer Spiders, but also panned the game for a poor translation and story issues.

In an unusual move, Spiders and publisher Focus Home Interactive took the criticism to heart, and today announced that a new translation of the game has been created. The publisher states that the game was originally written in French, and that the English version of the game “strayed too far” from what the original story and character motivations were.

To fix it, the release of Mars: War Logs on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 has been delayed until sometime in September. The game was originally scheduled to come out on consoles sometime in May. The English localization of the game has been completely redone, with voice actors called in to re-record dialogue. The new translation can now be patched into the PC version of War Logs and will be included in the console versions at launch.

“Mars contains a vast amount of dialog, even by RPG standards,” said Luc Heninger, director of production at Focus. “The plot has numerous strands and the dialog often has many variants to mirror the hero’s changes in reputation. The tight deadlines between the game release dates meant that the initial English translation lacked depth and contained a number of errors; it was then sent to the recording studio, making the job of the actors extremely difficult. The actual game was thoroughly tested and released with very few bugs on PC, but unfortunately the procedures for the audio and text QA failed and allowed many English localization issues to slip through. We realized the extent of the problem after seeing the first feedback from the press and gamers. The result was so far removed from what we usually produce that we took the decision to halt the submission process for the console version, which was due for release only weeks after the PC title. We have re-written the game text and dialog and, of course, recorded the actors again, replacing the sections that weren’t true to the characters in Mars. All these problems will therefore be fixed in the console version. An update is now available for players with the PC game, and we have also incorporated the new audio in the PC versions on the various download sites.”

In addition to pointing out that War Logs is 33% off today on Steam, Focus has released a new video featuring the re-localized first seven minutes of the game. The voice acting in the game has gotten a noticeable quality boost since it’s release on PC.

  • Mars: War Logs Launches, Trailer Released

Mars: War Logs, a new cyberpunk action-RPG, has been released for PC today. It is currently selling for $20 on Steam. The game’s publisher has stated that it will be available on the Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network “very soon.”

Spiders Studios first announced the title back in December, when it seemed the announcement of cyberpunk-themed games had become a trend. The developer revealed the game as being set in a decadent, dystopian Mars where survivors of a “great cataclysm” fight over the planet’s precious water supplies.

Though the fighting in the game is real-time, the game’s mechanics still incorporate many RPG aspects. Players will be able to level up their characters to make them hard-hitting, stealthy, or into a “technomancer.”

As a downloadable title, Mars: War Logs isn’t likely to be as long or as polished as RPGs from larger studios. As the launch trailer for the game shows, however, the game’s intriguing art direction and allusions to Dune may be enough for certain types of sci-fi fans to give it a try.

  • Mars War Logs Trailer Shows Off Combat, Skills

Last December, Spiders Studio revealed the first trailer for its upcoming Mars: War Logs. The game was billed as a cyberpunk RPG set on the planet Mars. Players will be able to take on the role of a man named Roy as he battles agains Technomancer dictators who control the red planet’s water resources.

Promises were made that Roy will have “dozens of skills and perks” for players to adapt their play-style to be combat effective, stealthy, or technomancer-y. It’s an ambitious project for something that is slated to be released via Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network, presumably at a price comparable to other downloadable indie titles.

Today, Focus Home Interactive and Spiders released a trailer for the game focusing on the real-time combat players will be involved in. The system appears to be similar to other other modern third-person action games, such as the Assassin’s Creed games or the Batman: Arkham games.

The trailer also provides a glimpse at the game’s skill tree and shows off a few of the powers that can be enabled. The crafting and gear system gets a quick mention near the end, but I suspect that might need a video of its own before the game’s “Spring 2013” release date.

  • First Trailer For Mars: War Logs, a New Cyberpunk RPG

It seems that cyberpunk might just be the next trend in video games. Along with Remember Me and Cyberpunk 2077, a new game called Mars: War Logs will have a decadent, dystopian future as its setting.

The game, developed by Spiders Games, will take place on Mars, where survivors of a “great cataclysm” are huddled in slums and ruled by guilds that control the planet’s water supply. According to Spiders, the game will feature the clash of technology, supernatural powers, and mystical creatures. Spiders provides a more detailed description of the game:

Today, we are off on the trail of Roy “Temperance,” the hero of the game. The war for water that pitted Aurora against Abundance has come to a close, and Roy finally returns to Shadowlair, Aurora’s capital city. However, he will not find home there. The city, now under the grasp of the mysterious Technomancers who use their powers to lead with an iron fist, has become a dictatorship against which a handful of resistant civilians fight for survival. Caught in the crossfire, and labeled a renegade, Roy will have no choice but to choose his side, and take arms once again.

Mars: War Logs plunges you into a thrilling cyberpunk RPG on the Red Planet. You will develop Roy and his combat style by choosing from dozens of skills and perks: pure combat, stealth and trickery, or the fierce Technomancer powers. the choice is yours! The real-time combat system requires both reflexes and tactics, while you battle fearsome opponents and Mars’ most terrifying creatures in dynamic combat. The crafting system lets players create and modify equipment to maintain an edge over their enemies. Dialogue choices as well as player actions will influence the destiny of the people Roy crosses paths with…and perhaps the fate of all colonies on Mars.

The game is a third-person RPG that is currently slated to launch in spring 2013 on Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network, and PC. The first trailer for the game was released today, and Spiders emphasized that the video does not contain dubstep. That’s a gesture that’s sure to win over more than a few dubstep-weary gamers.
