  • Chris Hughes, Co-Founder of Facebook, Weds Boyfriend

Chris Hughes, one of the four guys credited with founding Facebook in a Harvard dorm room, married his longtime boyfriend Sean Eldridge in a ceremony attended by Mark Zuckerberg, Sean Parker, and a couple of U.S. Congresspeople including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

And unsurprisingly, he posted some photos of the event to Facebook.

Earlier this week, Facebook unveiled some new Timeline icons for marriage events that featured two males and two female spouses. This move was obviously made in solidarity with the LGBT community, a group that Facebook has supported for many years. Just last year, Facebook granted gay and lesbian couple the chance to be “in a civil union” or “in a domestic partnership” on the site. For things like this, as well as their deep commitment to anti-bullying initiatives, Facebook recently became the first ever social media company to be honored with a GLAAD Media award.

Hughes and Eldridge got to show off those new icons on the Timeline:

Hughes, along with Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and Eduardo Saverin, launched Facebook more than eight years ago. Hughes, a North Carolina native, is currently the publisher and editor-in-chief of The New Republic, a post he grabbed back in March of this year.

He also played a big part in the social media strategy that helped Barack Obama win the Presidency back in 2008.

Of course, Hughes isn’t the only Facebook co-founder to tie the knot recently. Mark Zuckerberg married longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan the weekend after Facebook went public.

  • Alicia Etheridge, Bobby Brown Tie the Knot in Hawaii: Twitter Reacts

Alicia Etheridge is now officially Bobby Brown’s wife, according to reports. The couple apparently tied the knot on June 19th at a small ceremony in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their 3 year-old son, Cassius, was the ring bearer at the event, which was only attended by close family and friends. Of course, Brown did what most modern individuals do whenever they experience a life-changing event: he shared at photograph on Instagram.

Brown popped the question to Etheridge back in 2010 during a concert in Jacksonville, Florida.

Although the vast majority of Brown’s offspring were in attendance, Bobbi Kristina was nowhere to be found. According to The Daily Mail, the girl was in New York with her grandmother, shooting scenes for their upcoming Lifetime reality show “The Houston Family Chronicles”. The program, which is tentatively scheduled to debut on the network later this year, follows Whitney Houston’s family as they attempt to cope with her passing.

Below you’ll find the image that Brown posted to Instagram. Positioned directly beneath this moment of wedded bliss are Twitter reactions to the “New Edition” singer’s recent marriage. Snarkiness and endless sarcasm are all on-display, which is pretty much par for the course when you’re dealing with Twitter users. If you have any interest at all in what they have to say, some of their posts have been embedded in the space provided.

  • Mark Zuckerberg Forgoes The Tip On European Honeymoon

Mark Zuckerberg Forgoes The Tip On European Honeymoon

It has been a busy month for Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. Not only did his company go public (and take quite the epic nosedive), but the 28-year-old billionaire married his longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan.

The newlyweds visited Italy for their Honeymoon, and according to sources they quickly adopted one particular aspect of the European culture – forgoing the tip.

According to the Telegraph, Zuckerberg and Chan went for a nice meal of sea bass ravioli and fried artichokes at a local Jewish restaurant in Rome. Per the report, the bill came to 32 Euros and that’s exactly what the Zuckerbergs paid – 32 Euros.

Apparently, the owner of the restaurant recognized Zuckerberg, who apparently enjoyed the meal:

“I asked him ‘how was it?’ and he said ‘very good’”, the owner said. “I had gone up to him and said ‘Are you …?’ and he said ‘Yes’.”

But not good enough for a tip, apparently.

Of course, we can’t knock Zuckerberg for going against what is customary. In most European countries, leaving a tip is considered extra and is not expected as it is in the States. Many countries in Europe impose a service charge that’s worked into the bill, and waiters there typically receive a higher compensation than the $2-$3 per hour rate common in the U.S.

Then again, some European establishments may expect a tip from American tourists as they know that it is customary in the culture. Travel guy Rick Steves explains that tipping in Italy isn’t expected, but it is definitely accepted for outstanding food or service:

In Italy you tip if you really like the place, the food and the service; if the waiter was very friendly for example. In US a waiter has a small salary, but just because he will have a lot of tips: tipping is necessary; in Italy no, the salary is good and the tip is something exceptional, so a guest can tip or not and normally only the 10/20 percent of guests tip. Giving a tip to the waiter or leaving it on the table it is up to you. Leaving it on the table is the standard

So, Zuckerberg technically wasn’t in the wrong with his lack of a tip, but when you’re worth $20 billion it definitely comes off as a bit cheap. Maybe he had just heard the latest on the dropping Facebook stock and decided he better start saving up.

  • Facebook Isn’t The Best When It Comes To Marriage

Facebook is great for a lot of things – catching up with old friends, discussing topics with like-minded individuals and following your favorite celebrities. It’s not so great when it comes to marriage though.

Back in January, a survey found that over 30 percent of all divorces in the U.K. mentioned Facebook in the filings. From that survey, we could gather that the openness Facebook brings with it is not good for marriage. Sure, society tells us that we should never keep secrets from our spouses, but Facebook makes sure that those secrets don’t stay secret for long.

That was all in the U.K. though. Surely the Internet, specifically Facebook, doesn’t play as large of a role in our divorce-happy nation, right? Unfortunately, Smart Money has found that over 80 percent of divorce attorneys have started to find social networking in their clients’ filing according to a report from the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Individual lawyers are also coming forward and saying that over half of all cases that submit electronic material as evidence include Facebook.

So what’s the big deal with Facebook and divorce? It’s the same problem that plagues a lot of stupid people on the social networking site. People think they’re anonymous when on Facebook even when the site clearly displays a lot of identifying and potentially incriminating information. This leads to people posting stupid things like siphoning gas from a cop car. It can also lead to people potentially admitting to an affair or other damning information, like leaving the toilet seat up.

What could be even worse is that Smart Money has found judges using Facebook posts to determine child custody and alimony. I understand that Facebook offers an extra layer of evidence in determining the competency of a human being, but I hope that it’s not the only thing being used. A lot of posts, at least from me, are full of hyperbole and exaggerated statements that aren’t meant to be taken literally.

It’s important to remember, however, that Facebook is just one part of the problem. Nothing can save a bad marriage, even when concealing your activities on Facebook. Posting irresponsible content on Facebook that brings your loyalty or maturity into question will not help matters at all.

Once again, the moral of the story is to always be careful of what you post to Facebook. You never know who is going to see it and it could have disastrous effects. I would also advise you not to obsessively stalk your spouse’s Facebook account. It’s their privacy and they will share it with you if they want. Being suspicious is only going to add undue stress to the relationship.

  • Mark Zuckerberg Marriage Gets Over 1 Million Likes

Mark Zuckerberg Marriage Gets Over 1 Million Likes

It’s no secret now that Mark Zuckerberg got married on Saturday after a lackluster day on Wall Street. Like the responsible Facebook CEO that he is, he updated his Facebook Timeline to indicate that he had indeed been married. When we covered the marriage on Sunday, the announcement was sitting around 700,000 likes. Since then, a lot more people have liked it.

The original post now has over 1.2 million likes. The comments thread has also reached 770. It’s definitely no world record breaker (which currently sits at over 1 million comments), but it shows that people obviously care about the man behind Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg Marriage Gets Over 1 Million Likes

The real meat of this story is obviously the comments on the post. I wouldn’t really be able to call myself a journalist if I didn’t sift through all 770 comments, most of them just saying “congrats,” to find the really endearing, or funny, ones.

This is the way real men celebrate success, making a commitment to someone you love. This proves that Mark Zuckerberg for all of his creativity and above the clouds thinking, he is a human being in touch with what matters in life. The guy has achieved monumental success and with an air of humility celebrates with those who he collaborated with at his company, his family and then marries his love. This is frankly model behavior for a Corporate Leader in America, if you ask me. I do not know how you do not root for this guy and consider yourself someone who respects America and what this country is all about. As I near middle age, maybe the Facebook crowd is teaching me that the world just might have a better, smarter and more determined generation to extend the American experience. Call me romantic but I am impressed and this is an undertone of humanity that maybe won’t be the story in the Financial News Media.

The most important journey of your life has arrived! I’m really looking forward to seeing how many good things you will yet bring to our world to make it a better place for all of humanity. I would like to send you one of my works as a wedding gift. If you like one of my works on my FB wall then I’ll make it as on original and send it to you an your beautiful bride.

There are things that deserve a white shirt and tie. An IPO is not one of them. Congrats =)

I now have something in common with Mark Zuckerberg: we share the same wedding anniversary. Congratulations!

Congrats Mark but next time you upload a photo you didn’t take you should really let everyone know who took it!

You were greedy during the stock IPO and hurt your followers. I’ve lost confidence in you and the FB brand. You’re no better than Jamie Dimon and his Wall Street friends.

That last one came out of left field, but is probably the only negative comment in the entire batch. There was one more that was a call back to the prenup stories over the weekend – the music video for Kanye West’s Gold Digger. The original poster of the video was quick to point out that he was “jk.”

Now if only we can get the million plus people here to invest in Facebook. That might help the share price that is now sitting around $31.

  • Mark Zuckerberg Gets Married After Big Facebook IPO

Mark Zuckerberg Gets Married After Big Facebook IPO

Mark Zuckerberg must be on top of the world right now. Facebook went public on Friday to the tune of $42 a share, even though it settled to $38 after a not so hot day.Regardless, it’s still a reason to celebrate. Zuckerberg wasn’t going to let the good times stop at the IPO though as the founder of Facebook also got married this weekend.

Zuckerberg updated his Facebook Timeline to show a picture of himself with long-time girlfriend, and now bride, Priscilla Chan. The picture of the newly wed couple has already attracted over 700,00 likes and over 600 comments. While it doesn’t break any records, it shows that the Facebook community is super excited for Zuckerberg. All the comments are full of good will and congratulations instead of the jokes that I was kind of expecting.

According to Daily Finance, the wedding ceremony was set to friends only. It took place at Zuckerberg’s home in Palo Alto surrounded by only 100 friends and family. The ring given to Chan was adorned with a “very simple ruby.” Here I was hoping that he was going to give her a ring with a sapphire shaped in the Facebook logo.

The funny thing is that most who attended the wedding were completely caught off guard. It would appear that the couple was waiting for Chan to graduate medical school so the date of the marriage was always in flux. It appears that the guests were invited under the pretense of a party, but found out it was a wedding after they arrived.

Like any good relationship, the marriage has become Facebook official. Both Zuckerberg and Chan have updated their profiles to show that they tied the knot.

We here at WebProNews wish the newlywed couple the best of luck in the coming years. Here’s hoping we will soon be able to report on some little Zuckerbergs running around the Facebook HQ causing all kinds of chaos.

Elizabeth Smart Gets Married, Twitter Reaction, Photos

Elizabeth Smart, kidnapping and rape victim, was married to Matthew Gilmour today after pushing the ceremony forward.

According to MSNBC, the marriage took place at Hawaii in the Laie Hawaii Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The marriage was originally planned to take place this summer, but was moved to today to avoid any distractions by the press.

Only the couple and their families were invited to the private ceremony and the couple plan on taking an extended honeymoon.

Elizabeth Smart is most well-known for being kidnapped at knife-point in 2002. She was held captive and sexually abused for nine months until she was rescued. After the ordeal and putting her captors behind bars, she became an activist for those who suffered the same indignities. She has also formed a foundation to help victims of abuse.

There are no public photos of the actual marriage due to its private nature, but Smart published a photo of herself and her husband. Just imagine them in a dress and a suit and it’s almost like you’re there.

  • Study: Online Role-Playing Games Hurt Marriages

Online role playing games negatively affect real-life marital satisfaction, according to a new Brigham Young University study published today in the Journal of Leisure Research.

The study reports that 75 percent of spouses of sword-carrying, avatar-loving gamers wish they would put less effort into their guilds and more effort into their marriage. The researchers, led by graduate student Michelle Ahlstrom, and recreation management professor Neil Lundberg, studied 349 couples to learn how online role-playing games such as World of Warcraft, affect marital satisfaction for both gamers and their spouses. And in some cases, gaming even increased satisfaction.

“It’s common knowledge that many couples experience challenges around gaming,” Lundberg said. “Particularly when husbands are heavy gamers, it clearly has a negative impact on their marriages.”

What the researchers found confirms popular opinion, with some interesting new details. The study revealed it’s not the time spent playing games that caused dissatisfaction, but rather the resulting arguments or disrupted bedtime routines. These issues can cause problems such as poorer marital adjustment, less time spent together in shared activities and less serious conversation, the study reports.

“It’s not the hours that make a difference,” Lundberg said. “It’s really what it does to the relationship– whether or not it creates conflict and quarreling over the game.”

The study showed that gaming is dominated by men, but there is a contingent of women gamers who play with their spouses.

“We didn’t realize that there was a whole group of couples who game together,” Lundberg said. “In those gaming couples where the marital satisfaction was low, the same issues existed. For example, if they argued about gaming and bedtime rituals were interrupted, even though they gamed together, they still had lower marital satisfaction scores.”

However, the study found that for couples in which both spouses play, 76 percent said that gaming has a positive effect on their marital relationship. Interestingly, for those who do game together, interacting with each others avatars–their online persona—leads to higher marital satisfaction. However, both must be satisfied with their mutual participation, especially the individual who plays less.

“Not all video games are bad,” said Ahlstrom, the graduate student. “Some are fun leisure pursuits that when played together may strengthen your relationships with others. With any type of gaming, consider the content of the game. Consider what you are doing in the game, how much time it is taking, how it is affecting you, your schooling, work, sleep, body and especially how it is affecting your spouse and marital relationship.”

The researchers believe the problem could be more severe than the study shows because they found many dedicated gamers were not willing to participate in the study. The average age of the respondents to their nationwide survey was 33, and the average marriage length was 7 years. Of those couples in which only one spouse gamed, 84 percent of the players were the husbands. Of those couples where both gamed, 73 percent of those who gamed more were husbands.

“This study really does verify that gaming has an effect on marital satisfaction,” Lundberg said. “It’s not just a random occurrence that a few couples are dealing with. Based on the large number of married gamers – 36 percent of multi-player online role-playing gamers report being married– we can assume this is a widespread issue.”

  • Microsoft Supports Marriage Equality

Microsoft is joining the fight for marriage equality.

Yesterday, Microsoft posted a lengthy blog post on their support for marriage equality and the reasons they do. The company says that it prides itself on their products and services, but their greatest asset has always been their employees.

To be successful, it’s critical that we have a workforce that is as diverse as our customers. Every day, the national and global economies are becoming more diverse. The lifeblood of a business is its ability to understand and connect with its customers. We’re no exception. Now more than ever, the most effective workforce is a diverse workforce.

The company states that it employs people from every state and almost 150 countries around the world. They say that this diversity is reflected in their work and that they use this creativity in developing new products.

They claim that Microsoft was the first Fortune 500 company to provide same-sex domestic benefits to their employees. The resulting support from their LBGT employees could has been very beneficial for the past two decades.

To that end, Microsoft is throwing their support behind two bills in Washington State that would give marriage equality to their employees and everybody in the state.

They claim that Washington’s employers are at a disadvantage as long as they can’t offer an inclusive environment to their employees. They claim that marriage equality would be Washington businesses on par with the six states that already have marriage equality laws in the books. They say that such laws that provide marriage equality would allow them to hire talent in the highly competitive tech field.

They do stress though that they don’t want this to be turned into a religious issue. They want a bill that’s similar to the one passed in New York that preserves religious freedom while ending discrimination in Washington law.

“Like the New York bill, we believe Washington’s legislation should be passed into law. It will make our state and our economy stronger,” the blog stated.
