  • Elisha Cuthbert Marries Hockey Star Dion Phaneuf

Elisha Cuthbert and Toronto Maple Leaf captain Dion Phaneuf decided to finally tie the knot this weekend in a private wedding.

Cuthbert, a Canadian actress (and professional eye roller) well-known for her roles in films like Love Actually and The Girl Next Door, married long time boyfriend Phaneuf over the weekend on Saturday. The wedding is said to have taken place at St. James Catholic Church in Summerfield, Prince Edward Island.

An insider speaking to Us Weekly said the couple wanted a formal wedding:

“The wedding will be in tents, and if it’s not raining, the tents will be open. There will be fireworks while guests are eating and food trucks at midnight, courtesy of the in-laws.”

I don’t see how fireworks and food trucks are formal, but I can only assume that one’s perception of formality changes as they go up the income ladder.

Speaking of which, Phaneuf hosted the reception at his waterside estate nearby. It’s been a favorite of Cuthbert’s since she started dating him in 2008 as it gave them a kind of privacy that’s nearly unattainable anywhere else.

As for the wedding itself, it was as normal as the wedding between two stars can be. The Journal Pioneer says that the ceremony itself was a private affair, but hundreds of people lined up alongside the road to catch a glimpse of the couple before and after they exchanged their vows at the church. Cuthbert was reportedly a good sport about all the extra attention, and welcomed the warm wishes from the crowd with a wave.

  • Solange Knowles Didn’t Show Up At Her Dad’s Wedding

Solange Knowles may not be as famous as her sister BeyoncĂ©, but she’s a successful singer/songwriter in her own right. That success ensures that she stays pretty busy – busy enough to miss an important wedding.

It’s being reported today that BeyoncĂ© and Solange were both missing at their father’s wedding on June 30. Some might speculate that their absence is a result of bad blood left over from their fathers divorce to their mother – Tina Knowles. Matthew Knowles told TMZ, however, that his daughters were simply too busy:

“Unfortunately, Beyonce and Solange had previous engagements which made it impossible for them to attend.”

And before you start thinking that Matthew is just covering for his daughters, his story does check out. BeyoncĂ© in particular has been busy this year with The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. She also has a toddler at home to take care of. There are also rumors that she’s pregnant with a second child, but Jay-Z says those rumors are unfounded.

As for Solange, she released a new EP called True earlier this year. She also announced in May that she has started her own label. The label – Saint Records – will be used to launch her new full length album later this year.

Back to the wedding, Matthew Knowles married his fiancé Gena Avery, a model turned real-estate agent. The two had been dating for about a year and a half. His ex-wife, who divorced him after his affair with Alexsandra Wright became public, has yet to remarry.

  • Joran van der Sloot to Marry in Prison

Joran van der Sloot to Marry in Prison

Back in 2005, Joran van der Sloot was implicated in the disappearance of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway. The American girl was last seen with van der Sloot during a high school graduation trip to Aruba. He was never tried for a crime connected to the disappearance. Last year, van der Sloot was convicted of the murder of a Peruvian woman named Stephany Flores, and sentenced to 28 years in prison. Now, it appears that rumors of van der Sloot’s impending marriage are true.

According to an Associated Press report, the 25-year-old van der Sloot is planning to wed a Peruvian woman while serving his sentence. If approved by prison officials, the wedding would take place within two weeks.

Van der Sloot’s lawyer told the AP that his client is “truthfully in love.” In October 2012 it was reported that van der Sloot had impregnated his girlfriend while in prison.

There is speculation, however, that the marriage is a move to avoid extradition to the U.S. to face extortion charges. Van der Sloot is accused of receiving $25,000 from Natalee Holloway’s mother in 2010, in exchange for information on where Holloway’s body can be found. The information he provided was allegedly false, and a U.S. District Court has since charged him with extortion and wire fraud.

  • Pitt Slams Aniston Marriage, Calls It “Pathetic”

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were once quite the pair. Their marriage lasted five years before the two called it quits in 2005. Looking back on it, Pitt says his marriage to Aniston was “pathetic.”

In a 2011 interview with the World War Z star in Parade Magazine, Pitt reflects upon his marriage with the Friends star. He told the magazine that his marriage with Aniston had basically devolved into him “sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out.” He then said that it started to feel “pathetic.”

He went on to say that he was so absorbed in trying to “find a movie about an interesting life” that his real life became uninterested. He partially blames his marriage to Aniston for the feeling by saying that he was “trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t.”

This all may sound like Pitt blames Aniston for the above, but that’s not the case says the star. He says that he means he was becoming dull to himself in the marriage, and the blame fell on himself. He holds that Aniston “is an incredibly giving, loving and hilarious woman.”

In a more recent interview with Esquire Magazine, Pitt refers to the 2011 interview saying that he was a “drifter” during his marriage to Aniston. He also said that he spent the years during the marriage just “f*cking off.” He finally started to move on after an “epiphany” caused him to feel that he was “wasting [his] opportunity.”

As for his current life, Pitt says that he’s “satisfied” in his relationship with Angelina Jolie. The two raise children they have adopted from around the world and are regular activists for various causes. In fact, Jolie was raising awareness for breast cancer last week when she announced that she had undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of developing the cancer. In the op-ed announcement, she urged other women to get tested for breast cancer, and to not be afraid of the surgery.

  • Schwarzenegger And Shriver Are Not Getting A Divorce Just Yet

Arnold Schwarzenegger and his ex-wife Maria Shriver were on track to be divorced after it came to light that Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with a member of his household staff. That divorce may notwbe on hold for a pretty weird reason.

TMZ reports that sources close to both Schwarzenegger and Shriver have said that they aren’t in any rush to finalize the divorce. Of course, you can’t look too deep into this. It seems that they both aren’t ready to jump into divorce because neither have anything to gain.

Wait, what? It’s reported that couple are worth $400 million together. The divorce settlement would have them splitting that right down the middle. Neither side would be better off monetarily after a divorce.

Of course, there’s another, more logical reason, for both of them to hold off on the divorce. Sources close to both told TMZ that they may still have feelings for each other. At this point, however, it’s still very much in the air as they’re Schwarzenegger and Shriver are both sending mixed signals in regards to their future plans.

Either way, it seems that Schwarzenegger and Shriver aren’t quite done with each other yet.

  • Jada Pinkett Smith: Open Marriage Rumors Addressed

Rumors have been swirling about Jada Pinkett Smith’s marriage to Will Smith since the actress made cryptic comments in a recent interview. More specifically, fans and gawkers wondered whether the couple have an open marriage.

Now, Jada has directly responded to the rumors, in a way. The actress may actually have complicated the rumors a bit, since she has still not directly stated that her marriage isn’t open. That was her point, though, as she mused about what a marriage should be, and how trust and knowledge of a person are better than threats and controlling behavior.

    From the Facebook post:

    Open marriage?

Let me first say this, there are far more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening in the world than whether I have an open marriage or not. I am addressing this issue because a very important subject has been born from discussions about my statement that may be worthy of addressing.

The statement I made in regard to, “Will can do whatever he wants,” has illuminated the need to discuss the relationship between trust and love and how they co-exist.

Do we believe loving someone means owning them? Do we believe that ownership is the reason someone should “behave”? Do we believe that all the expectations, conditions, and underlying threats of “you better act right or else” keep one honest and true? Do we believe that we can have meaningful relationships with people who have not defined nor live by the integrity of his or her higher self? What of unconditional love? Or does love look like, feel like, and operate as enslavement? Do we believe that the more control we put on someone the safer we are? What of TRUST and LOVE?

Should we be married to individuals who can not be responsible for themselves and their families within their freedom? Should we be in relationships with individuals who we can not entrust to their own values, integrity, and LOVE…for us???

Here is how I will change my statement…Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship…this means we have a GROWN one.

    Siempre,

    J

  • Jeremy Irons’ Gay Remarks Include Incest Speculation

With the tipping point on gay marriage already reached and even conservative commentators such as Bill O’Reilly admitting that gay marriage supporters have a “compelling argument,” it now seems inevitable that gay marriage is on the fast-track to legality.

As the arguments continue to rage online, at least one person is looking ahead to what gay marriage will mean for marriage in the future. Actor Jeremy Irons this week appeared on HuffPost Live and discussed his views on gay marriage.

The Oscar-winning British actor expressed his concerns over what changing marriage might mean in future courtrooms. Irons pointed out that in Britain gay couples could enter into a “union” that would give them rights of marriage without the name. He then goes on to explain in a convoluted way what he foresees happening.

“It seems to me that now they’re fighting for the name, and I worry that it means somehow we debase or we change what marriage is,” said Irons. “I just worry about that.”

The actor stated that he thinks “the lawyers are gonna have a field day with same-sex marriage.” As an example of what he worries about, Irons brought up taxes and incest. In particular, he worried that, since he doesn’t consider same-sex incest to be incest, a father could marry his son to pass on his estate tax-free after death.

“It’s not incest between men,” said Irons. “Incest is there to protect us from having inbreeding, but men don’t breed…so incest wouldn’t cover them.”

Though his rambling comments sparked even more online debate, Irons himself stated that he doesn’t feel strongly one way or the other about gay marriage, and that “it’s lovely to have someone to love.”

  • Jesse James Marries Pro Drag Racer Alexis DeJoria

It seems that both Kat Von D and Sandra Bullock are in the rear view mirror of Jesse James’ love life.

People magazine is reporting that the 43-year-old James has married his fiance, Alexis DeJoria, at her father’s home in Malibu. DeJoria is the daughter of John Paul DeJoria, the billionaire co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems and the PatrĂłn Spirits Company.

Alexis DeJoria is a professional drag racer who races with the NHRA. She races for the Kalitta Motorsports team and competes in the Nitro Funny Car class.

James’ love life has been the stuff of tabloid fodder since he married actress Sandra Bullock in 2005. Their 2010 divorce was overshadowed with allegations of James’ infidelity, and he began dating reality show star Kat Von D later that year. James and Von D were engaged in 2011, but split before the end of that year. Though Bullock has not been linked to any suitors since that time, Von D last year accepted a public Twitter marriage proposal from famous DJ Deadmau5.

McKellen also jokingly propositioned Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, who briefly showed up during the interview. The host later plays a clip of McKellen’s first appearance on television in 1964. The marriage revelation begins at the 11-minute mark in the video below:

  • National Cathedral to Host Same-sex Weddings

Very Rev. Gary Hall, the dean of Washington National Cathedral, announced today that same-sex weddings can now be performed at the cathedral. The cathedral has been designated by congress as the “National House of Prayer” and has been the venue for many U.S. memorial services and funerals, including those for Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

“Washington National Cathedral has a long history of advancing equality for people of all faiths and perspectives,” said Hall. “The Cathedral is called to serve as a gathering place for the nation in times of significance, but it is also rooted in its role as the most visible faith community within the Episcopal Church. For more than 30 years, the Episcopal Church has prayed and studied to discern the evidence of God’s blessing in the lives of same-sex couples. It is now only fitting that the National Cathedral follow suit. We enthusiastically affirm each person as a beloved child of God – and doing so means including the full participation of gays and lesbians in the life of this spiritual home for the nation.”

Same-sex marriage ceremonies performed at the cathedral will use a rite adapted from an existing blessing ceremony the Episcopal Church approved last year, which allows individual bishops in each diocese to decide whether or not to allow the rite to be used for same-sex marriage. The bishop overseeing Washington D.C. chose to allow same-sex marriage using the rite just last month.

“In my 35 years of ordained ministry, some of the most personally inspiring work I have witnessed has been among gay and lesbian communities where I have served,” said Hall. “I consider it a great honor to lead this Cathedral as it takes another historic step toward greater equality – and I am pleased that this step follows the results made clear in this past November’s election, when three states voted to allow same-sex marriage.

“Matters of human sexual identity and questions about the Church’s role in blessing lifelong, committed relationships between its members are serious issues around which feelings run high and people of good will can often disagree. It is my hope and prayer that, if all of us open ourselves to the fullness and diversity of our nation’s many voices, we will learn to walk together in a new way as we listen for God’s call to us to be faithful to each other and to God.”

Images of same-sex weddings at the National Cathedral will certainly help illustrate that a tipping-point has already been reached in the U.S., and that same-sex marriage rights (in addition to others) will soon be recognized across the country. There is a catch, however: not everyone can be married at Washington National Cathedral.

At least one member of a couple must be Christian and baptized to be married at the cathedral. Also, “as a general rule,” only active members of the cathedral’s congregation, alumni of it’s schools, big donors to the cathedral, or those judged by Hall “to have played an exceptional role in the life of the nation” are eligible to be married at the cathedral.

So, while the first same-sex marriages performed at the National Cathedral are likely to be small affairs for church members, it’s possible that some well-known LGBT people who have “played an exceptional” role in the U.S. could be married there in the near future.

  • Boy Meets World Star Engaged, Rider Strong To Marry Girlfriend

Boy Meets World Star, Rider Strong, is engaged to girlfriend Alexandra Barreto. Us Weekly reports that Strong, who is best known for his role as Shawn Hunter in Boy Meets World, proposed to Barreto on December 23.

It’s reported that proposal went down while Baretto’s parents were visiting for the holidays. He designed and created the engagement ring himself. He told Us that he received lessons in wax casting from an “old-school jeweler” in Echo Park, and then set up a workspace himself to craft the ring out of white gold. His father, who also created an engagement ring for his own marriage, made the wooden box that housed the ring.

As for the special moment itself, Strong described the scene to Us:

“I took her for a walk under the redwoods on the property where I grew up in Northern California. It was pouring rain, but it didn’t look like it was going to stop anytime soon, so I just decided to go for it.”

For now, Strong will be focused on his upcoming marriage to Barreto, but will he have any involvement with Girl Meets World? He told Us that he has no “official involvement” in the spin off series starring the daughter of Cory and Topanga, but he says that he “can’t wait to see it evolve.”

  • Magical Proposal May Bring a Tear to Your Eye

Putting your cute, over-the-top marriage proposal on YouTube is nothing new. Having your girlfriend film her own proposal and presenting the ring with a magic trick? Ok, that’s pretty good – I’ll give you that one.

Let’s just hope their love is no illusion.

  • Fallout-Themed Proposal Leaves Vault Girl Speechless

It’s always great to see nerds in love. It’s not surprising that those passionate about the geeky things they love would be similarly passionate about the people they love. When it comes to marriage proposals, leave it up to the nerds to combine all of their passions.

YouTube user satisyingsigh (Trevor in real life) decided that PAX Prime in Seattle this past weekend was the perfect time to pop the question. Since the couple were doing a little Fallout cosplay at the event, he decided to make his proposal Fallout themed. From Trevor’s video description:

We had been saving up bottle caps since November 2011 with the intention of using them at PAX Prime 2012 to attempt and purchase something from the Bethesda booth (the creators of Fallout 3). It was originally going to be a sort of “gag” to try and score some interesting swag from Bethesda, and in Alisha’s mind, it stayed that way.

So we get to to the booth, hand a lady our caps, and she pulls out a locked ammo case. The walkway was getting crowded, so we walked over to a nearby table to try and pick the lock. Alisha had a key in her pocket that I had slipped in there earlier, but my plan to get her to discover it failed, so i pretended to have picked the lock (because I had a spare key). Alisha pulls a wadded up piece of brown paper out of the shells and gunpowder that were in the ammo box. She unravels it to find a ring box. Yay! Until i stupidly drop it and execute a quick recovery.

That, my friends, is a man who has taken the Lady Killer perk.

  • This Googler Proposed To His Girlfriend With A Nexus 7 Tablet

In a touching mix of undying love and new product marketing, a Googler proposed to his girlfriend by giving her Google’s new Nexus 7, and showing her a video. Google tweeted about it today:

“On July 4th, 2012, my girlfriend and I were in Chicago with our two brothers and friend. We visited the Shedd Aquarium, Millennium Park, and played squash at the University Club. At the end of our match, our brothers sneaked upstairs while I gave her a gift: the Nexus 7 tablet,” the Googler says in the YouTube description. “I did a quick live demo and ended it by showing her this video on YouTube :).”

The 7-inch tablet was unveiled at Google I/O last month. It’s the same size as the Kindle Fire, and costs $199.

As reported earlier, the first ad for the device is out now, and while it’s no Jurassic Park 4, there are dinosaurs involved. The Nexus 7 is available from the Google Play Store, though the 16GB model is currently sold out.

  • Facebook Wants To Make Sure You Don’t Miss Another Engagement Or Wedding

Facebook constantly guilts me into wishing friends a Happy Birthday. I’m terrible with remembering dates so I’m glad the feature is there. Facebook is adding the same reminders for engagements and weddings which will be good for me as all my friends start to get married.

Speaking to The Next Web, a Facebook spokesperson said that the feature is all about sharing the important events in your life with friends:

Facebook has become a unique way people share and congratulate friends around exciting life events such as engagements and weddings or the arrival of a child. To make it easier to keep up with these momentous occasions and to ensure you can share in your friends’ joy, we are rolling out a “Weddings and Celebrations” feature. Beginning today, special events starting with engagements and weddings will be displayed along with friends’ birthdays when you log into Facebook.

I almost feel like this particular feature was inspired by Mark Zuckerberg’s marriage. Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, could have used the feature as well when he married his boyfriend. It seems like events in the lives of Facebook employees help shape new features such as when Facebook added organ donor status after CEO Sheryl Sandberg ran into a doctor friend who suggested the idea.

I have a friend getting married pretty soon so this feature will help me not to forget to wish him congratulations. Now that Facebook has added the ability for same-sex couples to express their marriage status, even more people will be able to share the momentous occasion of getting married to their Facebook profile. Don’t forget to ask for plenty of gifts while you’re at it!

  • Nia Long Isn’t Interested in Getting Married Just Yet

Nia Long, who many may remember from the movies “Friday”, “Boiler Room”, and “Big Momma’s House”, revealed in a recent interview that she’s currently not interested in tying the knot with her long-time boyfriend and international basketball player Ime Sunday Udoka. In a recent interview with Essence, the actress said that while she’s in no rush to get marriage, the possibility hasn’t been entirely ruled out.

“I’ll be at home with my man, having a perfectly loving time, and I’ll see all these comments on some site about how wrong I am for not being married,” Long said. “I don’t feel less loved or less loving because I’m not married.” She admitted that she has never seen a marriage work, which has prompted her to search for “emotional maturity” in a relationship, instead.

Long, who recently welcomed her first child with Udoka, revealed that she’s been working on patching up the relationship between her and her first child’s father. Although the couple had their rocky moments in the past, Long said that she feels they’ve finally reached a good place. Additionally, Long has also reconciled with her father, allowing her to add some much-needed stillness to her life following the birth of her second child.

“Motherhood is not easy, but it’s natural,” she explained. “I worked hard to have the career I wanted, but I’ve also been deliberate about my personal life. None of this is a mistake.”

The entire interview will be available in the August issue of Essence.
