Mark Zuckerberg: Facebook About To Crack Down On Hate Speech

Mark Zuckerberg admitted on Friday that Facebook recognizes, and will be doing more to counteract, hate speech against migrants.

In September, Mark Zuckerberg met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel about ongoing hate speech issues in Germany.

The meeting Friday was in response to anti-migrant Facebook posts by neo-Nazi sympathizers that have made their way onto the social media platform since Facebook was made available in their country.

Mark Zuckerburg said on Friday, “Learning more about German culture and German law has led us to change our approach on that. This is always a work in progress. I’m not going to claim up here today that we’re perfect, we’re definitely not.”

Facebook recently pledged over $1 million dollars in funds to the Online Civil Courage Initiative. The group also receives support from the German Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection.

Hopefully all of the actions taken by Mark Zuckerberg will help slow the flow of all kinds of hate speech on the immensely popular social media platform.

At our Townhall Q&A in Berlin, someone asked why Priscilla and I plan to give away 99% of our Facebook shares. I talked about our hopes for improving education, curing disease and building stronger communities.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg expressed similar sentiments with Mark Zuckerberg and said of the initiative, “We have repeatedly emphasized that Facebook is no place for the dissemination of xenophobia, hate speech or calls for violence.”

She added, “With this new initiative, we are convinced to better understand and respond to the challenges of extremist speech on the internet.”

What do you think of the extraordinary steps Mark Zuckerberg has gone through to stop hate speech on Facebook?

Mark Zuckerberg Takes a Stand Against Hate Posts On Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, says there is “no place for hate” on the social media site, adding that there is more work to be done to police hate speech, especially in Germany.

Answering a question Friday at a town hall event in Berlin, he had being instituting better controls on monitoring and removing hate posts.

According to the Associated Press, German officials have raised concerns over the ever-increasing spread of far-right and other groups’ messages of racism and hate. Last year, Zuckerberg spoke personally with Chancellor Angela Merkel about the issue.

Zuckerberg said “until recently in Germany I don’t think we were doing a good enough job, and I think we will keep needing to do a … better job.”

According to Zuckerberg, migrants living in Germany are now considered a “protected class” of people and will be treated as such on Facebook.

Meanwhile back home, Zuckerberg issued a companywide memo Thursday chastising employees who have been crossing out the phrase “black lives matter” and writing “all lives matter” on Facebook’s free expression walls at its Menlo Park, California, campus.

According to Gizmodo, Zuckerberg notes in the memo that there are no rules about what can be written on the chalkboards, but he considered these acts “malicious.”

“This has been a deeply hurtful and tiresome experience for the black community and really the entire Facebook community, and we are now investigating the current incidents,” he told employees in an internal company posting. He explained that “black lives matter” doesn’t mean other lives don’t. “It’s simply asking that the black community also achieves the justice they deserve.”

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn: Why Are They Praying for Kanye West?

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn appear in an Instagram photo posted to Bell’s account that says they are praying for Kanye West. Why are the Bad Moms cast mates praying for Kim Kardashian West’s husband?

Of course it’s likely in jest. Chances are they are mocking the comment the rapper made last week about being millions of dollars in debt.

“On set and #prayingforkanye #BADMOMS #MilaKunis #kathrynhahn,” Bell captioned the shot of herself with Mila Kunis and Kathryn Hahn. The three ladies appear to be holder grill lighters and they have reverent looks on their faces.

Kanye West has been under considerable fire in the past several days. He begged Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to bail him out of his alleged $53 million debt. He also raised the ire of many within the music world with the lyrics of his latest song, “Famous.” In it he claims he “might still have sex” with Taylor Swift because he “made that bitch famous.”

Taylor Swift struck back at West during last Monday’s Grammy Awards, saying no one can take credit for her fame.

That said, do you suppose Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn are truly praying for Kanye West–and if so, what for? Are they praying for him to grow a conscience? Are they praying for him to stop butting in to issues that don’t involve him? Perhaps they’re praying he never goes near nor speaks about Taylor Swift for the rest of his life.

Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell were likely taking a break from filming on the set of Bad Moms, and figured they’d create a funny post since Bell just joined Instagram a few days ago.

Little do they realize how much he truly needs their prayers–but for much deeper reasons than the obvious ones.

  • Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn: Cast of “Bad Moms” Prays for Kanye West

Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn: Cast of “Bad Moms” Prays for Kanye West

Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Kathryn Hahn–all members of the cast of Bad Moms–appear in a new Instagram post, with their hands folded and reverent looks upon their faces.

After just two days on Instagram, it’s plain to see Kristen Bell is having fun sharing her sense of humor on social media.

Her photo with her cast mates is captioned, “On set and #prayingforkanye #BADMOMS #MilaKunis #kathrynhahn.”

Yes, Kristen Bell and her friends are praying for Kanye West.

Of course it’s uncertain exactly what the ladies are praying for with regard to Kanye West. It could be his recent admission that he’s broke. You’ll no doubt recall he’s been trying to convince Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg to bail him out. Maybe Kristen Bell and her cast mates are praying for Mark to help. Perhaps they’re praying for Kanye to design better looking clothes. They might be praying that he gets a life, or borrows some money from wife Kim Kardashian West.

During her first day on Instagram, Kristen Bell shared a fun throwback pic with her hubby, former Parenthood star Dax Shepard.

“I don’t know how to use instagram but I do like this picture,” she captioned it.

What’s your take on Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Kathryn Hahn’s prayer for Kanye West? Are the Bad Mom stars being facetious, or are they truly praying for divine intervention instead?

Fans can check out Kristen Bell and her Bad Moms cast mates when the film–that also stars Christina Applegate–hits theaters later in 2016.

Mark Zuckerberg Called Out By Kanye West During Twitter Plea For Money

Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest men in the world, so it’s probably not a surprise to him when someone asks for money. But when that person is one of the biggest entertainers in the music industry, things get a bit more complicated.

Zuckerberg got a shoutout from Kanye West this week on Twitter, where the rapper pleaded for fans to help him on his quest to get out of millions of dollars worth of debt. West said that he felt Mark Zuckerberg could help him get back on track and bring his creative vision to his fans the right way.

“You love hip hop, you love my art… I am your favorite artist but you watch me barely breathe and still play my album in your house…World, please tweet, FaceTime, Facebook, instagram, whatever you gotta do to get Mark to support me…I’m this generation’s Disney…I want to bring dope s–t to the world…I don’t have enough resources to create what I really can,” Kanye said.

Zuckerberg hasn’t responded publicly to West’s pleas for help, but sources say he has employed quite a few security guards at his home lately due to threats from Facebook users. The mogul is one of several CEOs in Silicon Valley who have upped the security game, hiring around sixteen guards just for his home.

“You’re touching hundreds of millions of people. All the CEOs get threats, and they take them very seriously,” a source told Page Six.

West has had a pretty full week, performing on Saturday Night Live and announcing that his new album, The Life Of Pablo, would be available to download on his site. However, he changed his mind and later pulled the album, announcing he would make it available exclusively on Tidal. Tidal quickly went on to become the number one downloaded app.

Mark Zuckerberg Predicts Facebook Could Have Five Billion Followers in 14 Years

Mark Zuckerberg has huge hopes for Facebook. The company CEO said at an event on Monday that he wants to see five billion followers on the social media site by the year 2030.

Tuesday was dubbed “Friends Day” at Facebook in honor of its 12th anniversary, and it was then that Mark Zuckerberg spoke to those gathered at the company’s new Frank Gehry-designed headquarters.

“We want to finish connecting everyone, we’re going to do it in partnership with governments and different companies all over the world,” Zuckerberg said, pointing to a large wall photo of a boomerang-shaped drone Facebook has developed, and calls Aquila. “It’s solar-powered, and it’ll just fly around a city and beam down Internet access. It’s, like, pretty crazy, right?”

Mark Zuckerberg has talked of connecting the rest of the world to Facebook for several years. Not all countries are in favor of the idea, however.

Regulators shut down Facebook in India, claiming the company was violating “net neutrality.” Egypt has completely banned Facebook.

One of Mark Zuckerberg’s ideas with Aquila is to bring the internet to remote places, like refugee camps.

What’s your take on Zuckerberg’s aim to have five billion Facebook members by the year 2030? Does everything Mark Zuckerberg touches turn to gold?

That will likely depend on the kind of reception he gets from leaders around the world, with the Middle East no doubt being the most resistant.

  • For Buisnesses, More to Come with Facebook Messenger

For Buisnesses, More to Come with Facebook Messenger

Last year at its F8 conference, Facebook introduced business features for Messenger, though so far, things have been pretty limited. The ecommerce businesses that have been using it, however, have been happy with it so far. That is according to Mark Zuckerberg.

Are you looking forward to more business feature availability for Messenger? Do you think it’s something your customers would like? Let us know in the comments.

Facebook reported its earnings on Wednesday, and the subject of Messenger came up a few times throughout the ensuing earnings call.

“With Messenger and WhatsApp, we’ve continued to make progress with building these into valuable communication services for everyone in the world,” Zuckerberg said in his prepared remarks (via Seeking Alpha’s transcript). “More than 800 million people now use Messenger monthly and in 2015 we grew that number by almost a quarter of 1 billion while also increasing engagement. We continue to give people new ways to communicate by introducing video calling and new options for customizing conversations with fun things like colors and emojis and by using apps like — using apps, the Messenger platform.”

“We also worked to extend Messenger’s utility by adding payments, a new way to connect with businesses and by testing M, a digital assistant powered by AI,” he said. “In this quarter we also began testing a transportation platform, allowing people to request an Uber ride through Messenger. More services will be coming to the platform soon, including airlines.”

It’s going to be particularly interesting to see what other kinds of services Facebook integrates here as time goes on. One can imagine this type of thing extending well beyond travel-related services.

“On Messenger, the platform efforts in 2015 focused on two things,” Zuckerberg later said during a Q&A. “One was expanding the different types of content that people could share in Messenger. And that diversity is going really well. And we see continued increase in video sharing and photos and stickers, and a lot of stuff that you would just call fun but that people really enjoy as different ways to express themselves. But in terms of the business, the more important piece is how people can interact with businesses through Messenger. And we started some early small tests around f8 last year where with some ecommerce services made it so that people who were buying things could follow up with the business and get customer support and buy more things. And we went through this process of integrating that and making sure that it’s integrated with all these system well. And I think everyone is really happy with that so far. So we started off pretty slowly, but that’s going to be some of the basis for how we look to make Messenger a business going forward. And we’re happy with the initial results. There is obviously a lot more there that we need to do and we’ll have more to talk about this year and beyond.”

Earlier this month, Facebook put out a small infographic looking at 2015’s additions to Messenger as well as expected 2016 trends.

According to recent data from Neilsen, Messenger is the fastest growing app in the U.S. among the top apps.

Priscilla Chan: The First Lady Of Facebook Makes TV Debut

Priscilla Chan, Mark Zuckerberg’s wife, recently gave birth to their first born Max. Along with the announcement of the birth of their daughter, Zuckerberg and Chan announced they will donate 99 percent of their fortune to charity.

First-time father, Zuckerberg made the statement in a letter to his daughter posted on his Facebook page.

The couple said they pledged to share $45 billion dollars from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative with the mission of advancing human potential and promoting equality. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative aims to “pursue its mission by funding non-profit organizations, making private investments and participating in policy debates, in each case with the goal of generating positive impact in areas of great need.”

Everyone knows who Zuckerberg is, but Chan has maintained a low profile even after her marriage to the Facebook founder.

Facebook First Lady Priscilla Chan Appears Makes First TV Appearance On TODAY

In a rare TV appearance, Chan opened up to The Today Show’s Savannah Guthrie about her life. She said her parents immigrated to the U.S. in refugee boats and she grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts. Chan graduated valedictorian from Quincy High School in 2003 and got voted as “class genius.”

Growing up, Chan said she often served as translator for her grandparents who did not speak English. She earned a BA in Biology and studied Spanish at Harvard University from 2003 until 2007 where she met Zuckerberg.

In 2008, Chan went to medical school at the University of California in San Francisco. Then she and Zuckerberg tied the knot on May 19, 2012.

Just this summer, Chan completed her residency in Pediatrics and works as pediatrician at San Francisco General Hospital. She is also the CEO and cofounder of The Primary School, a nonprofit private school that will provide K-12 education, prenatal support and on-site healthcare which will operate next year, CNN said.

The power couple has been actively involved in several charity causes over the past few years.

Priscilla Chan and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg are new parents.

The couple announced the birth of their first child, a daughter named Max, on Tuesday.

“I am beyond thrilled to introduce you to our Max. Her being fills us with hope and inspires us to join others in creating a better future,” Chan said in a Facebook post.

She then shared a note from Zuckerberg, called “A Letter to Our Daughter”.

In it, Zuckerberg and Chan pledge to give away pretty much their entire Facebook fortune – 99% of their shares. The two will do so under a new charitable mission called the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Priscilla and I are so happy to welcome our daughter Max into this world! For her birth, we wrote a letter to her about…

Posted by Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Zuckerberg and Chan, writing to their new daughter:

As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.

We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.

Chan, a medical doctor, married Zuckerberg in 2012 after nearly a decade of dating. She announced her pregnancy in July, and the couple shared their struggles with miscarriages.

“Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world,” said Chan and Zuckerberg in their letter to Max.

Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg welcomed their first child last week, a baby girl they named Max, and they’re already thinking of her future.

The First Couple of Facebook announced this week that they plan to donate 99% of their shares from the social media company–an estimated $45 billion–to various causes in the coming years in order to make the world a better place for Max and for her generation.

“Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation,” Priscilla and Mark wrote in an open letter to their daughter.

The decision immediately drew praise and criticism online, but the couple won’t elaborate just yet on what they plan to spend the money on, saying they will make those announcements in the coming months.

“Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities,” the letter read.

Of course, it’s been assumed that Mark and Priscilla will continue their work in the tech world as well, and the couple touched on the topic in the letter, saying they want to work to give future generations access to the tools and technology they need to succeed in education. Chan and Zuckerberg also noted that there is no quick fix for anything, and their plan will take quite a bit of work and time.

“We must make long term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years. The greatest challenges require very long time horizons and cannot be solved by short term thinking…We must engage directly with the people we serve. We can’t empower people if we don’t understand the needs and desires of their communities,” Zuckerberg and Chan wrote.

Isobel Bowdery: South African Woman Survives Paris Massacre by Playing Dead, Facebook Post Goes Viral

Isobel Bowdery is a 22-year-old South African woman who was at the Eagles of Death concert in Paris on Friday night when gunmen entered and began executing countless people.

Bowdery played dead inside the concert hall. She has since shared her account of surviving the Paris attacks on her Facebook page. That post has since gone viral.

“Dozens of people were shot right infront of me. Pools of blood filled the floor. Cries of grown men who held their girlfriends dead bodies pierced the small music venue. Futures demolished, families heartbroken. in an instant. Shocked and alone, I pretended to be dead for over an hour, lying among people who could see their loved ones motionless.. Holding my breath, trying to not move, not cry–not giving those men the fear they longed to see. I was incredibly lucky to survive. But so many didn’t. The people who had been there for the exact same reasons as I–to have a fun friday night were innocent. This world is cruel. And acts like this are suppose to highlight the depravity of humans and the images of those men circuling us like vultures will haunt me for the rest of my life,” Isobel Bowdery wrote in her post.

As of earlier on Sunday, Isobel Bowdery’s Facebook post about surviving the Paris massacre has been shared more than 600,000 times. Mark Zuckerberg was among those who shared it.

Isobel Bowdery explains in her post how she laid perfectly still, trying not to cry so the gunman would mistake her for dead. She also writes about the love and compassion she felt from many following the horrific ordeal.

Knowing full well she is among the lucky ones at that concert in Paris, can you even imagine the state of mind Isobel Bowdery is in right now?

Like all of those who lost loved ones or survived Friday’s massacre in Paris, she will no doubt be haunted by these senseless killings for the rest of her life.

  • Mark Zuckerberg: ‘Reactions’ Give You New Ways To Express Love, Awe, Humor & Sadness

Mark Zuckerberg: ‘Reactions’ Give You New Ways To Express Love, Awe, Humor & Sadness

Mark Zuckerberg hosted a Q&A last month in which he dropped the bombshell that Facebook was finally getting ready to release a “dislike” button. He actually did imply that was what was coming at first before kind of backtracking and clarifying that this isn’t exactly what we would be getting.

In reality, we would get different types responses to express empathy and various emotions. The thinking is that people don’t want to “like” status updates about deaths and other sad parts of life, but do want to be able to express empathy with a single click.

On Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg and co. officially announced “Reactions,” which it is at first testing in Ireland and Spain before offering up to the rest of the world.

    Optimized-Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 1.48.52 PM (1)

First off, let’s step back and look at what Mark Zuckerberg actually said in the September Q&A:

I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day where I actually get to say that we’re working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.

You know, it took us awhile to get here. Because you know, we didn’t want to just build a dislike button because, you know, we don’t want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts. Right? That doesn’t seem like the kind of community that we want to create. I mean, you don’t want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you in your day and then have someone downvote it. That isn’t what we’re here to build in the world.

But over the years of people asking for this, what we kind of have come to understand is that people aren’t looking an ability to downvote other people’s posts. What they really want is to be able to express empathy.

You know, not every moment is a good moment, right? And if you are sharing something that is sad, whether it’s something in current events like the refugee crisis that touches you or if a family member past away, then it might not feel comfortable to Like that post. But your friends and people want to be able to express that they understand and that they relate to you.

So I do think that it’s important to give people more options than just Like as a quick way to emote and share what they’re feeling on a post, so we’ve been working on this for awhile. It’s surprisingly complicated to make an interaction that you want to be that simple. But we have an idea that we think we’re going to be ready to test soon, and depending on how that does, we’ll roll it out more broadly.

But thank you for all the feedback on this over the years. I think we’ve finally heard you and we’re working on this and hopefully we will deliver something that meets the needs of our community…

Facebook Product manager Chris Tosswill gave more information about “Reactions” in a new blog post, calling it an “extension of the Like button that gives people more ways to share their reaction to a post in a quick and easy way.”

Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 1.48.34 PM

“We’re excited to start this test, but understand that this is a big change, and one that we want to make sure to get right,” he wrote. “Our goal is to show you the stories that matter most to you in News Feed. Initially, just as we do when someone likes a post, if someone uses a Reaction, we will infer they want to see more of that type of post. We will spend time learning from this initial rollout and iterate based on findings in the future.”

A new post on Mark Zuckerberg’s own Facebook account says, “Reactions gives you new ways to express love, awe, humor and sadness. It’s not a dislike button, but it does give you the power to easily express sorrow and empathy — in addition to delight and warmth. You’ll be able to express these reactions by long pressing or hovering over the Like button.”

You can check out the post for a video demonstrating the new feature.

Instagram Tops 400M Users, Leaves Twitter in the Dust

Instagram has just hit another user milestone.

According to the company, it now has 400 million users. It hit 300 million back in December of 2014, so the photo-oriented social network took less than a year to snag the next 100 million users.

“Our community has evolved to be even more global, with more than 75 percent living outside of the US. To all the new Instagrammers: welcome! Among the last 100 million to join, more than half live in Europe and Asia. The countries that added the most Instagrammers include Brazil, Japan and Indonesia,” says Instagram.

“When Instagram launched nearly five years ago, 400 million seemed like a distant dream. Now, we continue to strive to improve Instagram — helping you experience the world through images and connect with others through shared passions.”

We’ve seen the first surface image of Pluto and the Champions League celebrations, as well as striking locales like the white pools of Turkey and a Namibian desert ghost town. Kevin and I celebrated the moment by going for a walk on our roof to talk about the future of Instagram. I’m excited for the journey ahead,” said Mark Zuckerberg in a Facebook post.

Where does 400 million monthly active users put Instagram in the rankings? Well, it’s now blazed past Twitter, which only boasts about 316 million users (but that’s not the whole story, according to Twitter).

Other Facebook property WhatsApp just hit 900 million users – though the metrics on messaging users are somewhat open for interpretation. Facebook, of course, still leads the pack with a whopping 1.49 billion MAUs.

Instagram isn’t just growing its user base – its user base is spending significantly more time on Instagram. A recent Pew study found that 59% of users use the service every day – up from 49% last year.

Of course, the next frontier for Instagram is true monetization. The company has been careful as to not overwhelm the userbase with ads – but more are coming, as it’s been slowly opening advertising up to more and more. And most are pretty pleased with the performance so far.

Ahmed Mohamed: Mark Zuckerberg Asks Him to Come Visit Facebook

Ahmed Mohamed, the Texas teen thrust in the national spotlight after he was arrested and suspended for bringing a homemade clock to school, might have a job at Facebook waiting for him in a few years.

“You’ve probably seen the story about Ahmed, the 14 year old student in Texas who built a clock and was arrested when he took it to school,” wrote Zuckerberg in a Facebook post. “Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest. The future belongs to people like Ahmed. Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I’d love to meet you. Keep building.”

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 2.33.02 PM

Zuckerberg isn’t the only one using social media to express support from Ahmed.

Both President Obama and Hillary Clinton tweeted their support earlier today.

Ahmed brought what he says was an engineering project to his Irving, Texas school on Monday. According to the Dallas Morning News, Ahmed’s English teacher heard the device going off in class and took it away from him. By sixth period, Ahmed was in the process of being arrested.

He claims he was interrogated by multiple police officers, threatened, and accused a trying to build a bomb.

By Wednesday morning, Irving Police have conceded it’s not a dangerous device, but officers had determined it was a “hoax bomb” despite Ahmed’s protestations of it simply being a clock.

Priscilla Chan, Mark Zuckerberg Expecting Baby Girl, Couple Shares Openly About Miscarriages

Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday they’re expecting a baby girl. In a very poignant Facebook post, the couple also shared openly about several miscarriages Priscilla Chan had in her attempt to have a baby.

“This will be a new chapter in our lives,” Zuckerberg wrote in the post. “We’ve already been so fortunate for the opportunity to touch people’s lives around the world … Now we’ll focus on making the world a better place for our child and the next generation.”

He added that Priscilla Chan suffered three miscarriages.

“You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child,” Zuckerberg continued. “You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience. Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you — as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.”

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan met back in 2003 while they were both students at Harvard. He never graduated because he focused on launching Facebook instead. It seems that has certainly paid off for the dad-to-be.

Zuckerberg explained that he and Priscilla Chan decided to share the story of her miscarriages in hopes in might help other couples who are going through a similar experience.

“When we started talking to our friends, we realized how frequently this happened,” he wrote. “We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt.”

He added that Priscilla and the baby are doing well.

“Our good news is that our pregnancy is now far enough along that the risk of loss is very low and we are very hopeful,” he wrote.

“In our ultrasound, she even gave me a thumbs up ‘like’ with her hand, so I’m already convinced she takes after me,” he added.

Congratulations to Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan on their exciting news and kudos to both of them for sharing their story with others.

  • Will Businesses Take Facebook’s Bait This Time?

Will Businesses Take Facebook’s Bait This Time?

A lot of business have felt gamed by Facebook after the company gave them a free way to reach people by their pages, got them hooked on that, and then made it so they can only reach a much smaller amount of fans without paying for sponsored posts. It sounds like Facebook is going to try a similar approach in its efforts to monetize the exceedingly popular Messenger.

Will you take the bait? Do you expect to invest in a Messenger strategy as Facebook makes it more business-friendly? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Facebook reported its Q2 earnings on Wednesday. Among the may topics of conversation on the ensuing conference call was the growth and potential monetization of Messenger.

As far as growth, the product is now up to over 700 million users. To put that in perspective, Twitter only has 316 million monthly actives.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, Messenger is a major contributor to the 46 minutes per day on average that people spend across Facebook products, and that doesn’t include the 800 million-strong WhatsApp. Over the past six months, Facebook has made performance improvements to its apps including Messenger, which Zuck says now lets people send messages up to 20% more quickly while the app starts twice as fast as before.

The company also noted that “virtually all” Messenger users use News Feed. In other words, there is hardly anyone that uses Messenger but not Facebook itself.

“On Messenger, this quarter, we rolled out a number of new features, including mobile video calling, a new way to share locations and the option to sign up for Messenger without using a Facebook account,” he said in his prepared remarks. “We also continue to make good progress building out the Messenger platform. We expect these improvements to continue making Messenger a more useful and engaging experience for lots of people. More than 700 million people now use Messenger and we’ve reached more than 1 billion downloads on Android. These milestones are a good sign that we’re on the right path here.”

During the Q&A portion of the call, Zuckerberg was asked about the company’s strategy with Messenger and WhatsApp. Here’s what he had to say (via Seeking Alpha’s transcript of the calls):

So the playbook that we’re going to run with Messenger and WhatsApp is kind of similar to how we thought about building a business in Facebook and News Feed, where if you go back to 2006 and 2007, there were a lot of people who were kind of encouraging us to just put banner ads and kind of inorganic content into the experience, and what we decided was that over the long term, the ads and monetization would perform better if there was an organic interaction between people using the product and businesses.

So instead of focusing on ads first, what we did was we built pages, and we made that free, that way as many businesses as possible could get into the network. And we built insights to make it so that businesses knew how they were driving business when they used pages for free and could post them to News Feed. And then on top of that whole ecosystem, we then had the opportunity to build what has turned into a News Feed business that we’re really proud of, right. That we think is driving a lot of value and good content for people who are using the platform and helping a lot of businesses find customers and sell their products and grow overall.

Messaging, I think, is going to be pretty similar, right? Where right now some people in WhatsApp use the service in order to message businesses, Messenger is, I think, more people-to-people today. We’re working on a lot of different things that make it so that people can get value from interacting with businesses. We launched some of them at F8. We have a number of other things that we’re working on across Messenger and WhatsApp. But the long term bet is that by enabling people to have good organic interactions with businesses, that will end up being a massive multiplier on the value of the monetization down the road when we work on that and really focus on that in a bigger way. So we’d ask for some patience on this to do this correctly, and the game plan will be more similar to what we did in Facebook with News Feed.

Businesses are well aware of the game Facebook has played with News Feed. They got used to being able to reach fans for free, but were eventually faced with the harsh reality that they would have start paying to reach larger amounts of those same fans (who had, by the way, explicitly indicated they wanted to receive content from those Pages).

With organic reach in News Feed, Facebook has played the whole thing off as happening because of increase competition for getting in front of users in the News Feed. This makes sense to an extent, but it remains to be seen if they’ll be able to keep that argument for Messenger once they get businesses hooked on the free aspect and then start charging. Messenger just doesn’t work the same way as News Feed. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this plays out.

The things that Facebook introduced at F8 that Zuckerberg was referring to include the developer platform, which opens up a lot of potential opportunities for businesses that can create engaging experiences that users want to interact with.

The company also announced Businesses on Messenger, which enables users to interact with businesses through the app, kind of as a replacement for email. Users have to opt in for businesses to be able to message them. If they do so, businesses can send them personalized updates and talk to them in real time. They can provide customers with the ability to opt in for this on their website. The offering can be used for order confirmations, shipping updates, etc.

It remains to be seen whether or not people actually want to engage with businesses via Messenger. There is something to be said about being able to get customer support in real time, and like Zuckerberg said, they’re already seeing some of this with WhatsApp.

As Messenger’s David Marcus explained in the F8 keynote, it does have the potential to make the customer service aspect more convenient as the company already has all of the relevant information about who you are and what you bought right from the get go. Everything takes place in the same discussion thread as your receipt.

As we’ve seen numerous studies show recently, businesses are pretty bad at customer service on Facebook, and this is one potential path to improvement in that department.

We’ll have to wait and see what these other things Facebook is working on with Messenger include. The product recently became available to anyone with a phone number, opening up potential growth among non-Facebook users. It also has a new feature that lets people send money to one another, and the company is said to be working on a shopping-focused personal assistant feature within Messenger.

What would you like to see Facebook add to Messenger to let businesses get more out of the tool? Let us know in the comments.

  • Mark Zuckerberg on AI, Poking, and Whether or Not the Machines Win

Mark Zuckerberg on AI, Poking, and Whether or Not the Machines Win

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently held another Q&A, in which he talked artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the future of the company. He also had nice interchanges with Stephen Hawking and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and answered a question about Poking.

Here are some of his most interesting responses.

On the topic of Facebook’s “real name policy” and its effect on the transgender community:

Real names are an important part of how our community works for a couple of reasons.

First, it helps keep people safe. We know that people are much less likely to try to act abusively towards other members of our community when they’re using their real names. There are plenty of cases — for example, a woman leaving an abusive relationship and trying to avoid her violent ex-husband — where preventing the ex-husband from creating profiles with fake names and harassing her is important. As long as he’s using his real name, she can easily block him.

Second, real names help make the service easier to use. People use Facebook to look up friends and people they meet all the time. This is easy because you can just type their name into search and find them. This becomes much harder if people don’t use their real names.

That said, there is some confusion about what our policy actually is. Real name does not mean your legal name. Your real name is whatever you go by and what your friends call you. If your friends all call you by a nickname and you want to use that name on Facebook, you should be able to do that. In this way, we should be able to support everyone using their own real names, including everyone in the transgender community. We are working on better and more ways for people to show us what their real name is so we can both keep this policy which protects so many people in our community while also serving the transgender community.

    On the future of technology:

In 10 years, I hope we’ve improved a lot of how the world connects. We’re doing a few big things:

First, we’re working on spreading internet access around the world through Internet.org. This is the most basic tool people need to get the benefits of the internet — jobs, education, communication, etc. Today, almost 2/3 of the world has no internet access. In the next 10 years, Internet.org has the potential to help connect hundreds of millions or billions of people who do not have access to the internet today.

As a side point, research has found that for every 10 people who gain access to the internet, about 1 person is raised out of poverty. So if we can connect the 4 billion people in the world who are unconnected, we can potentially raise 400 million people out of poverty. That’s perhaps one of the greatest things we can do in the world.

Second, we’re working on AI because we think more intelligent services will be much more useful for you to use. For example, if we had computers that could understand the meaning of the posts in News Feed and show you more things you’re interested in, that would be pretty amazing. Similarly, if we could build computers that could understand what’s in an image and could tell a blind person who otherwise couldn’t see that image, that would be pretty amazing as well. This is all within our reach and I hope we can deliver it in the next 10 years.

Third, we’re working on VR because I think it’s the next major computing and communication platform after phones. In the future we’ll probably still carry phones in our pockets, but I think we’ll also have glasses on our faces that can help us out throughout the day and give us the ability to share our experiences with those we love in completely immersive and new ways that aren’t possible today.

Those are just three of the things we’re working on for the next 10 years. I’m pretty excited about the future

    On Facebook’s AI initiatives:

Most of our AI research is focused on understanding the meaning of what people share.

For example, if you take a photo that has a friend in it, then we should make sure that friend sees it. If you take a photo of a dog or write a post about politics, we should understand that so we can show that post and help you connect to people who like dogs and politics.

In order to do this really well, our goal is to build AI systems that are better than humans at our primary senses: vision, listening, etc.

For vision, we’re building systems that can recognize everything that’s in an image or a video. This includes people, objects, scenes, etc. These systems need to understand the context of the images and videos as well as whatever is in them.

For listening and language, we’re focusing on translating speech to text, text between any languages, and also being able to answer any natural language question you ask.

This is a pretty basic overview. There’s a lot more we’re doing and I’m looking forward to sharing more soon.

    From Stephen Hawking:

I would like to know a unified theory of gravity and the other forces. Which of the big questions in science would you like to know the answer to and why?

    That’s a pretty good one!

I’m most interested in questions about people. What will enable us to live forever? How do we cure all diseases? How does the brain work? How does learning work and how we can empower humans to learn a million times more?

I’m also curious about whether there is a fundamental mathematical law underlying human social relationships that governs the balance of who and what we all care about. I bet there is.

    From Arnold Schwarzenegger:

Mark, I always tell people that nobody is too busy to exercise, especially if Popes and Presidents find time. You’ve got to be one of the busiest guys on the planet, and younger generations can probably relate to you more than they can the Pope – so tell me how you find time to train and what is your regimen like? And by the way – will the machines win?

Staying in shape is very important. Doing anything well requires energy, and you just have a lot more energy when you’re fit.

I make sure I work out at least three times a week — usually first thing when I wake up. I also try to take my dog running whenever I can, which has the added bonus of being hilarious because that basically like seeing a mop run.

And no, the machines don’t win

    On his definition of happiness:

To me, happiness is doing something meaningful that helps people and that I believe in with people I love.

I think lots of people confuse happiness with fun. I don’t believe it is possible to have fun every day. But I do believe it is possible to do something meaningful that helps people people every day.

As I’ve grown up, I’ve gained more appreciation for my close relationships — my wife, my partners at work, my close friends. Nobody builds something by themselves. Long term relationships are very important.

On why he has a $1 set salary at Facebook:

I’ve made enough money. At this point, I’m just focused on making sure I do the most possible good with what I have. The main way I can help is through Facebook — giving people the power to share and connecting the world. I’m also focusing on my education and health philanthropy work outside of Facebook as well. Too many people die unnecessarily and don’t get the opportunities they deserve. There are lots of things in the world that need to get fixed and I’m just lucky to have the chance to work on fixing some of them.

    On the future of Facebook:

There are a few important trends in human communication that we hope to improve.

First, people are gaining the power to share in richer and richer ways. We used to just share in text, and now we post mainly with photos. In the future video will be even more important than photos. After that, immersive experiences like VR will become the norm. And after that, we’ll have the power to share our full sensory and emotional experience with people whenever we’d like.

Second, people are gaining the power to communicate more frequently. We used to have to be with someone in person. Then we had these bulky computers at our desks or that we could carry around. Now we have these incredible devices in our pockets all the time, but we only use them periodically throughout the day. In the future, we’ll have AR and other devices that we can wear almost all the time to improve our experience and communication.

One day, I believe we’ll be able to send full rich thoughts to each other directly using technology. You’ll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too if you’d like. This would be the ultimate communication technology.

Our lives improve as our communication tools get better in many ways. We can build richer relationships with the people we love and care about. We know about what’s going on in the world and can make better decisions in our jobs and lives. We are also more informed and can make better decisions collectively as a society. This increase in the power people have to share is one of the major forces driving the world today.

    And finally …

Why did you come up with Poking?

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

It always does, Mark. It always does.

If you’re excited about today’s Supreme Court ruling, Facebook has a cool way to let you show it.

See? Mark Zuckerberg just did it:

Screen Shot 2015-06-26 at 2.13.45 PM

Earlier today, Zuckerberg praised the ruling, saying we are moving in the right direction.

Our country was founded on the promise that all people are created equal, and today we took another step towards achieving that promise.

I’m so happy for all of my friends and everyone in our community who can finally celebrate their love and be recognized as equal couples under the law.

We still have much more to do to achieve full equality for everyone in our community, but we are moving in the right direction.

Today the US Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, said that the Constitution requires that same-sex couple be allowed to marry. The decision effectively makes gay marriage legal nationwide, as states can no longer reserve the right to marry only for heterosexual couples.

Mark Zuckerberg Gives $5M to Immigrant Scholarship Fund

Continuing his push to bring the plight on immigrants to the forefront of public discussion, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made another investment in a pro-immigrant cause.

Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have donated $5 million to TheDream.us, a scholarship fund that helps undocumented immigrants go to college.

“Hundreds of thousands of young immigrants are part of our communities and attend school legally in the United States. Many of them moved to America early in their lives and can’t remember living anywhere else. They want to remain in the country they love and be a part of America’s future. But without documentation, it’s often a struggle to get a college education, and they don’t have access to any kind of federal aid,” said Zuckerberg in a Facebook post.

“The investment Priscilla and I are making will go towards creating college scholarship programs for more than 400 young immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area over the next five years. TheDream.US is a national scholarship program that has done amazing work under the leadership of Don Graham and others, and we’ve previously invested in their work. But we also wanted to help extend their efforts in the Bay Area as part of our ongoing efforts to support social and economic programs in our local community. Over the coming years, our hope is to prepare hundreds of students to graduate with associate or bachelor’s degrees so they can build meaningful new careers.”

TheDream.us describes itself as the “Pell Grant for DREAMers”. Its goal is to help more than 2,000 DREAMers graduate from college over the next 10 years.

It’s a fairly new initiative, only active since June 2013.

“America was founded as a nation of immigrants. We ought to welcome smart and hardworking young people from every nation, and to help everyone in our society achieve their full potential. If we help more young immigrants climb the ladder to new opportunities, then our country will make greater progress,” said Zuckerberg.

Of course, this isn’t Zuckerberg’s first action in this arena. Zuckerberg founded FWD.us, an organization that supports comprehensive immigration reform.
