Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child fame has signed on to play the role of Lucious Lyon’s mother in the upcoming second season of Empire. She will appear in flashbacks experienced by Lyon–who is played by Terrance Howard.

This isn’t the only new cast member to join Empire’s second season. In addition to Kelly Rowland, the show will soon star Chris Rock, Marisa Tomei, Alicia Keys, and Lenny Kravitz, too.

Kelly Rowland’s new character hasn’t been officially named, but the writers are referring to her as “Mama Lyon.”

Since Destiny’s Child split back in 2002, Kelly Rowland has enjoyed both a singing and an acting career. She served as a judge on The X Factor US. She is married to her manager Tim Weatherspoon, and the two welcomed a son last November.

Are you an Empire fan? Do you see Kelly Rowland fitting into the mix?

Flashbacks can either make or break a show. In which category do you foresee the flashbacks experienced by Terrance Howard’s character falling?

Do you expect Kelly Rowland will be given a specific cast name in Empire? Or will she forever be known as Mama Lyon instead?

  • Marisa Tomei, George Clooney Involved in HBO Miniseries

Marisa Tomei has signed on to play feminist Gloria Steinem in Ms., an upcoming HBO miniseries. Steinem will serve as a consultant on the project. Gloria Steinem is known for being the most prolific feminist writer and activist of her time.

Ms. will detail the creation of Ms. magazine in 1971 and will highlight the feminist movement of the 1960s and the 1970s. The project–still in the development stage–will be executive produced by Bruce Cohen, George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Kathy Najimy, and Marisa Tomei.

Kathy Najimy is set to star alongside Marisa Tomei in the miniseries.

This isn’t the first time Marisa Tomei and George Clooney have worked together. They worked–along with Grant Heslov–on the 2011 drama The Ides of March.

Marisa Tomei is best known for her role as Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny, where she starred alongside Joe Pesci and Ralph Macchio.

While it’s uncertain exactly how much of Gloria Steinem’s life Ms. will cover, there is no doubt that it will be well-portrayed as part of a quality production. When you combine talent like that of George Clooney and Marisa Tomei, it’s bound to be good.

  • Marisa Tomei To Work With Clooney Again For Gloria Steinem Miniseries

Marisa Tomei has reportedly signed on to play Gloria Steinem for an HBO miniseries called Ms., which is the story of the feminist icon’s early days with Ms. Magazine and how it affected the lives of many women during the feminist movement.

According to TV Guide, Tomei recently signed a deal with HBO to produce and star in several projects, and on this one she’ll team up once again with George Clooney, who is co-executive producing alongside Bruce Cohen (Silver Linings Playbook). The duo last worked together on the political thriller The Ides Of March, in which Tomei played a reporter. Kathy Najimy is also on board, taking the role of Steinem’s best friend, U.S. Rep. Bella Abzug.

Steinem and a team of her friends started Ms. in the early ’70s, a time when women were not expected (or, in many cases, allowed) to take on the male-driven jobs in the publishing industry. Even for magazines that catered exclusively to women, men made up most of the staff. The stories that did come from women were expected to be about fashion, makeup, or how to keep a man happy; politics and other civil issues were out.

“When I suggested political stories to The New York Times Sunday Magazine, my editor just said something like, ‘I don’t think of you that way,’ ” Steinem told New York Magazine.

Ms. contributor Jane O’Reilly said that when Steinem gathered her team to brainstorm topics for the magazine, the excitement was almost palpable.

“People were sitting on the floor, on chairs, hanging from rafters. When it came to all the topics proposed, it struck me as being like your first trip to Europe: You think you have to go to every single country because you might never get to go back,” O’Reilly said.

The first issue of the magazine sold out in just eight days, a fact which is sure to be covered in the miniseries, though it’s not clear how far into Steinem’s life the show will go. Marisa Tomei will be executive producing the series as well as starring.

  • Marisa Tomei Dons A New Hat As Movie Producer

Marisa Tomei has donned the hat of producer for the upcoming film Loitering With Intent.

The 49-year-old actress told Page Six she had several reasons for deciding to branch out into this new role in the movie industry.

“I got into producing out of necessity and curiosity. Reading scripts, looking for ideas got me into subjects that don’t always come across for an actress,” said Tomei. “Others are doing the heavy lifting, and I’m a neophyte, but it’s exciting.”

Michael Godere and Ivan Martin wrote and star in Loitering with Intent. The film follows a group out-of-work actors turned screenwriters who lean on each other as they muddle through Hollywood’s cutthroat world. Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festial earlier this year, the gritty film takes a hard look at the film industry.

“The heart of this film is about friendship. Michael and Ivan created great characters and a great atmosphere to work in. We had a ball bringing this world to life,” said Tomei in a statement.

The film also stars Sam Rockwell and Natasha Lyonne.

Tomei is also starring with Hugh Grant in the romantic comedy, The Rewrite, about a rakish, down-on-his-luck screenwriter who demeans himself by taking a job teaching at a college.

Directed by Marc Lawrence, who collaborated with Grant on 2002’s Two Weeks Notice and 2007’s Music and Lyrics, the comedy also stars Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons.

  • Marisa Tomei, Daniel Radcliffe Movie A Mystery To Fans

Marisa Tomei and Daniel Radcliffe are filming a movie in New York at the moment, but just which movie it is has confounded the media.

Radcliffe was photographed by paparazzi as he walked down the street with a cig in his mouth and several dogs attached to a dog-walker’s belt, an image which quickly made the rounds on the web, and he was also spotted snuggling with Tomei in Bryant Park, but there have been conflicting stories as to which movie they’re filming. The Daily Mail has speculated it’s one called The Rewrite, in which Tomei plays a single mother who falls for a young playwright. However, UPI says it’s a Judd Apatow film called Trainwreck.

Radcliffe has been a busy actor lately, shucking his “Harry Potter” persona for several very adult roles, and even some stints on Broadway. He’s also constantly shooting down rumors about his love life and fielding questions about his sexual preference, and has said that his “type” is one he keeps private….although he did mention to Ellen Degeneres that he has a big crush on Katy Perry.

Radcliffe is currently rumored to be dating his Kill Your Darlings co-star Erin Darke, although the couple reportedly split for a brief time only to get back together.

“Erin thought it was a real relationship, going as far as introducing Daniel as her boyfriend. He’s flown her out to London and taken her on dates and spent plenty of time with her in NYC, but Daniel just up and left New York without a second thought. Erin was devastated,” a source told Life & Style Magazine.

  • Marisa Tomei And Daniel Radcliffe Cuddle In Public

Despite what Judd Apatow says, there is photographic evidence to prove it.

Marisa Tomei and Daniel Radcliffe are part of the cast for the new Apatow comedy Trainwreck. There were no official statements released that the two actors were in the film, however, several pictures of both Radcliffe and Tomei were snapped and posted online. The pictures were taken in New York City, which serves as one of the locations for the comedy.

It appears as if Radcliffe, 24, and Tomei, 49, are a romantic couple in the film. In the pictures posted online, the seemingly mismatched pair is surrounded by a litter of cute dogs. Radcliffe was also spotted earlier this week walking twelve dogs at the same time in the crowded streets on NYC while smoking a cigarette. It looks like he is a dogwalker/trainer in the comedy.

Apatow is obviously keeping the details of Trainwreck a secret. On the film’s imdb.com page, it simply reads, “Plot details are being kept under wraps.”

In response to the many pictures taken of Radcliffe walking the dogs (they were all over the internet this week) for Apatow’s film, the director jokingly denied any and all speculation in a tweet.

The film also stars Brie Larson, Bill Hader, Amy Schumer, Tilda Swinton, and Ezra Miller. Comedian Amy Schumer wrote the screenplay for the movie. Trainwreck is set for a July 24, 2015 release date.

  • Marisa Tomei: One of Many Celebs Getting Older Today

Who knew? December 4th is a big day for Hollywood. Academy Award winner Marissa Tomei turned 49 on Wednesday. And she’s in good company.

Also blowing out birthday candles today are actors, rappers, comics and models. Talk show host and former Victoria Secret/Sports Illustrated model Tyra Banks is celebrating a milestone birthday. She is now 40. If you’re looking for the person who is probably throwing the biggest bash, search no further than rapper/producer/mogul/Nets owner Jay-Z, who is 44.

Jay-Z and Beyonce have a very special goal in mind in honor of the “Empire State of Mind” singer’s birthday. He wrote on Tuesday on his Life + Times blog that the couple was going vegan. “On December 3rd, one day before my 44th birthday I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based!! This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a “plant-based breakfast” every day. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought. Why now? There’s something spiritual to me about it being my 44th birthday and the serendipity behind the number of days in this challenge; 22 (2+2=4) coupled with the fact that the challenge ends on Christmas day…It just feels right!”

And the list of December 4th birthdays continues. Looking for a laugh, former Saturday Night Live standout and Portlandia star Fred Armisen is 47. And finally, another Oscar winner is celebrating a birthday today, Mr. Lebowski himself, Jeff Bridges is 64.

  • Michael C. Hall To Star In Broadway Play

Michael C. Hall To Star In Broadway Play

Michael C. Hall, better known to most as Dexter Morgan, is slated to be one of several big name stars in a new Broadway play. Hall, along with Toni Collette, Marissa Tomei and Tracy Letts are set to be in a Broadway production of The Realistic Joneses, a play by Will Eno. For those of you that are already missing Hall’s beloved character, cheer up, you will be able to see him on Broadway as early as March.

Hall, of course, is most well-known for his role in Dexter, which just finished up its 8th and final season on Showtime recently. He starred on the HBO hit Six Feet Under, which ran for five seasons. He has also been in several films, and is getting ready to appear in one of the most anticipated film of the fall, Kill Your Darlings, alongside former Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe.

In addition to Hall, his co-stars are more well-known as film actors and are likely to gain even more attention. Toni Collette has also appeared on Broadway once before in The Wild Party. Like Hall, she also had a starring role in a Showtime series, The United States of Tara. Tomei is well-known for her Oscar winning role in My Cousin Vinny, and has also appeared on Broadway in Wait Until Dark, Salome, and Top Girls.

Bryan Cranston, who recently ended his run on AMC’s hit Breaking Bad is also starring in a broadway play called All The Way, in which he will portray former President Johnson.

The play tells the story of two couples, both with the last name of Jones. It is set in a small rural town, and presents the intertwining lives of two neighboring couples who live in identical houses and share the same last name. In somewhat of a utopia like setting, the two couples are forced to choose between perfect fantasies and imperfect realities.

A theater has been chosen for the play yet, but previews are set to begin in February, with an opening weekend of sometime in late March. Hall has appeared on Broadway twice before this, in Chicago and Cabaret.

The author of the play, Will Eno, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Thom Pain, and also wrote Middletown, Title and Deed, and Oh, The Humanity and Other Exclamations. The Realistic Joneses first premiered at the Yale Repertory in 2012 with Tracy Letts on board already. Sam Gold will also return as the director of the Broadway version.

Michael C. Hall, the 42-year-old native of North Carolina, is certainly a fan favorite, and news of his casting should excite all of his Dexter fans.

Here he is, as featured in the musical Cabaret.
