Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade For TV Only, Says CEO

“The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is not going to be a live event but it’s all going to be filmed live,” says Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette. “It’s going to be filmed over a two-day window. It’s got the floats, it’s got the balloons, but the talent is different. We are really excited about having a great Thanksgiving Day Parade for America this year. It’s just going to be different but it will be going without a hitch.”

Jeff Gennette, Chairman and CEO of Macy’s, says that the iconic 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be happening over two days but without a live audience:

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Is Happening

When you think about Macy’s you think about we’re pillars of the communities that we are a part of. We take great pride in that. That’s in our DNA. When you look at what we do to give back and what we’re doing with all of our donations, what we’re doing for meals on wheels with food instability right now, those are things that we’re really proud of. We’re in that with our customers raising millions of dollars for communities in need. If there ever was a time where we need to give thanks it is right now.

For Thanksgiving, we had kind of a dress rehearsal where we did the fireworks. We did the fireworks and we did it in a way that was safe for people who are living in New York City. Expect the same thing with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s not going to be a live event but it’s all going to be filmed live. It’s going to be filmed over a two-day window. It’s got the floats, it’s got the balloons, but the talent is different. All the people that were ready to come, the marching bands, the cheer squads that were coming in for 2020, we’ve given them a pass and they’re coming back for 2021. We’re backfilling with other entertainment.

We are really excited about having a great Thanksgiving Day Parade for America this year. It’s just going to be different but it will be going without a hitch.

Being An Omnichannel Retailer Gives Us An Advantage

Is back to school shopping a prequel to how holiday shopping will be? We’re all looking at how’s the traffic going to be between Thanksgiving and Christmas or Hanukkah? How should we expect that? We’re all looking for whatever comes our way. We’ve all got A-B-C. alternatives. We call it the 2020 options because whatever comes our way we have to have flexibility. What I’m expecting is that holiday traffic is going to start much earlier. More than ever, customers want to have a great gift that they either put under the tree or they give in a treasured box.

To make sure that we have that ready for customers no matter when they want to shop we’re pulling the calendar to start addressing those great values at the beginning of November. We’re going to be ready for the customer, for those that want to shop after Thanksgiving. Being an omnichannel retailer, we’re going to have a great advantage to be able to deliver it the day before Christmas by same-day delivery or them coming to a store and through the safety of curbside being able to pick up that great value.

  • Sofia Carson Performs Song, “Rotten to the Core,” from Disney Channel Original Movie, in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Sofia Carson stars in Disney Channel Original Movie, The Descendants, and on Thursday morning, she performed a song from the movie in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Costar Dove Cameron was supposed to do the song, “Rotten to the Core,” along with Carson, but at performance time she was nowhere to be seen.

Sofia Carson shared a photo of herself with Dove Cameron during a rehearsal for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade earlier this week, via Instrgram.

Despite Dove’s absence, Sofia Carson gave a stellar performance atop the Discover Adventure float. She was adorable, decked out in a black trench coat with red lining that perfectly enhanced her bright red lipstick.

Sofia was honored to learn she was the first person ever to ride the Discover Adventure float. It’s the new Build-A-Bear float, featuring teddy bears on a sailboat, rocket ship, and a castle.

Fans took to Twitter out of concern for Dove Cameron when they saw Sofia Carson performing solo in this morning’s parade.

  • Kellie Pickler Does Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Kellie Pickler lit up the chilly streets of New York City on Thursday as she sang in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Riding aboard the NHL float replete with a fully functioning ice rink, Kellie didn’t skate, but she did sing and celebrate. Kellie’s new album, The Woman I Am, debuted at Number 4 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart, and that’s definitely worthy of a celebration.

The Woman I Am features 12 new Kellie Pickler songs, including A Little Bit Gypsy, which she shared with fans at the parade on Thanksgiving Day. Pickler co-wrote three songs on the album, which was produced by Luke Wooten and Frank Liddell.

If you missed Kellie’s parade performance, you needn’t fret, as she’ll be on TV again December 2nd. She will perform on the CMA Country Christmas special on ABC, singing The Man with the Bag. Her version of that Christmas song is available for purchase now.

Twitter fans loved seeing Kellie Pickler at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Fortunately Kellie Pickler and the rest of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade performers were accompanied by the grand balloons the parade is known for. There was some speculation that the balloons might not go up on Thursday due to a prediction of strong winds. However their show went on–as did Kellie’s. She likely felt like she was soaring high above the clouds with The Elf on the Shelf, Spider-Man and The Wizard of Oz–as she sang for her fans and celebrated what will no doubt become an even bigger hit album for the beloved country singer.

  • Kellie Pickler: New Album Makes Parade Appearance

Kellie Pickler joined the bands and balloons today, performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The country star is promoting her new album, All The Woman I Am, which debuts at Number 4 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. The new album features 12 songs, three of which were co-written by Pickler.

Pickler is also making an appearance on the CMA Country Christmas special, airing on 2 December. Known for her bubbly style and down-home wit, Pickler posts on her Facebook page: “I’m performing my new Christmas song ‘The Man With The Bag’…most of you know that I am a HUGE fan of the classics…this song was written in 1950 and the legendary Kay Starr made it a holiday hit!!!!! …it was my first time recording with a ‘big band’….it’s sassy and fun! Xo Pickler.” The song can be purchased from iTunes.

Pickler, 27, has made the rounds of TV reality. She is a champion of Dancing With The Stars and made her debut on American Idol. She even recorded much of the album during her DWTS run. But the album, which was released on 11 November, tells tales of a small town girl and as The Hollywood Reporter puts it, “the best friend a gal could want for.”

The title track was written by Pickler with her husband, Nashville songwriter Kyle Jacobs. “My husband came home from work, and we wrote ‘The Woman I Am,’ which is perfect. I guess nobody knows me better,” says Pickler.

To her fans and potential purchasers, the North Carolina native says she hopes they find, “at least one song off this album that they identify with and hope it speaks to them… we all come from somewhere, we just don’t get to choose that place that we come from… We get to choose what we do today.”

  • Thanksgiving Day Parade 2013: Big Balloons May Be Grounded

This year’s 87th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade may not feature its biggest attraction due to inclement weather. A mix of sleet, rain, snow and strong winds could prevent some of  this years balloons from appearing in the parade

16 inflatable parade characters such as Spiderman, Snoopy, Spongebob Squarepants, and Kermit the frog could lose their flying privileges due to New York City regulations. The city rules that the much loved balloons won’t be able to fly if winds exceed 23 mph or if the gusts exceed 34 mph. The latest weather forecast by The National Weather Service indicates that winds are likely to range between 15-25 mph while the gusts are expected to exceed 35 mph. The authorities will make final decision on Thursday morning.

“The balloons, as you know, can be flown to various heights… or not brought out at all,” New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said on Tuesday.

“These are decisions that will be made as we go forward depending on the weather conditions,” Kelly said.

The restriction is meant to protect the crowd because heavy winds cause a flight risk for oversized balloons. With the tallest balloon reaching over 5 stories high, it could mean that the handlers would have difficulty trying to control the balloons. The Macy’s parade is America’s most watched parade of the year. People come from all over the world to see the spectacle and take part in the celebration. If the balloons don’t fly this year it will surely leave many people heart broken – especially the kids. Let’s hope the weather holds up.

  • Joan Jett Jumps Floats for Macy’s Parade

Joan Jett Jumps Floats for Macy’s Parade

Joan Jett has jumped from one float to another for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. A vegetarian, Jett was initially slated to perform aboard a float that represented South Dakota. Once South Dakota ranchers got word of her eating philosophy, however, they protested her appearance on the float, political ire was raised, and the whole scenario went downhill quickly. As anyone who has ever been on or operated a parade float knows–downhill isn’t the way to go.

“I’ve decided to switch from South Dakota to another float because people’s political agendas were getting in the way of what should be a purely entertainment driven event,” Jett said Saturday during an interview with CNN. “I will remain focused on entertaining the millions of people watching, who will be celebrating a great American tradition.”

Word of the float switch made its way pretty swiftly to Twitter.

Joan Jett was Macy’s choice, not that of South Dakota representatives, when first scheduled for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. She had no plans of backing out. Even though she claims in her quote on CNN to have switched floats of her own volition, it sounds like it was Macy’s doing and not hers. Do you suppose she is pleased with Macy’s for making the switch? Jett is known for being rather surly at times, so she might have actually enjoyed performing in the face of adversity.

Do you think this was a wise decision on behalf of Macy’s to switch Joan Jett from the South Dakota float to a different one in light of recent protests? Might there have been some trouble if the rocker had in fact taken the stage on their float?
