Number one ranked Alabama goes up against arch nemesis (#13 in BCS) LSU in tonight’s marquee game in Tuscaloosa, AL.
Now, a game pitting two highly ranked teams usually means a great game to tune into. When you add the history between these two teams, including Alabama coach, Nick Saban, who was also the former coach of LSU(2000-2004), it can take that up a few notches.
Tonight, LSU has a chance to hurt their division rival, as Alabama is trying to continue their road to a third straight National Championship. The importance of that has not left Saban unaware, “It’s probably hard for everybody to think that this is just another game,” Saban said.
Everyone has their picks for tonight’s big game as well as former Super Bowl winning coach, Tony Dungy:
The pressure will be on for LSU being both the underdog and going into hostile territory in Tuscaloosa. ”It’s definitely huge. I can’t even understate that,” Tigers running back Jeremy Hill said. ”It’s a big game. I’m not even going to sit here and lie to you guys. You just can’t let it overwhelm you.”
LSU coach, Les Miles and Saban have had a great rivalry since 2007. The series stands between the two at 4-3, Bama. Tonight’s game will either even it for Miles’ and LSU or give Saban’s Crimson Tide another step closer to their goal.
If tonight’s game is anything like last year’s, we are in for a treat tonight.
As Tim Tebow demonstrated, the sports world is always a great way to get the masses talking on Twitter, and while the LSU/Alabama BCS Championship Game didn’t break the records Tim Tebow’s overtime pass did, it’s still the talk of the web. Be it sports blogs, mainstream media web outlets, or Twitter, folks are still reacting to the Alabama’s crushing defensive performance, some, however, are at the expense of LSU quarterback, Jordan Jefferson.
As of this writing, there are three Twitter trends devoted to Alabama’s BCS title-clinching win, two, however, are focusing on Jefferson’s mistakes rather than Alabama’s impressive shut out. Even the infamous LSUFreek weighs in with this appropriate mashup:
This is true, Jefferson’s Twitter account is gone. If it was up last night during the game, there’s really no telling the types of posts he had to deal with. It must have been incredibly ugly, but then again, so was his play against Bama’s defense. Speaking of, while Jordan Jefferson is getting drawn and quartered across the Internet, some folks actually remembered to give credit where it’s due, as opposed to piling on a kid who played poorly against one of the best defenses ever in college football:
@AmbianPancakes BryanThe last time I saw a Tiger get beat that bad his wife had a golf club.
That last one just about sums things up, at least from Alabama’s perspective. In case you missed it, here’s the only touchdown from last night’s game, courtesy of Trent Richardson:
To the victor goes the spoils, and, as is the case nowadays, all of the Internet trends, at least for a little while.
The SEC Championship is this weekend, as Georgia and LSU get ready to battle for conference supremacy. The favored LSU Tigers are playing for a BCS Championship berth, while the Georgia Bulldogs are playing for legitimacy.
No, the Bulldogs won’t make the BCS Championship if they win, but if they do beat LSU, they’ll certainly put themselves in position for a more lucrative bowl game payday. The truth is, even if LSU loses, as long as they don’t get stomped out in the process, they’ll probably make the BCS Championship anyway, meaning Georgia is the team with the most to win when the game kicks off on Saturday afternoon.
With that in mind, that’s probably what motivated the following video from Georgia fans, which, according to the blog I found it on, represents a new low in the annals of Georgia hip hop:
While I’m not one to be as judgmental as others, although, it is pretty cringe-worthy. It should also be noted that of the 1000-plus Facebook reactions to Georgia’s video, 691 are dislikes, with only 464 likes. Hey, at least there are shots of the Georgia cheerleaders, right? Naturally, LSU fans responded in kind, and it’s really hard to say which fanbase wins here, but first, try LSU’s video on for size:
“LS Who? It’s LSU. Where’s BCS title, dawgs? Cause we got two.” Nothing says fan battle like coming strong like that. What’s next? Videos of fans fighting in the stands? Actually, that’s par for the course for most sporting events, but it wouldn’t it be the least bit surprising if more started showing up on YouTube during the LSU/Georgia game.
With that, who ya got? After the season LSU’s had, it’s almost impossible to pick against, unless, of course, you’re one of the Georgia fans who showed up in that video.
Some sports figures transcend their chosen profession and become larger-than-life figures. While such elevations are normally saved for the athlete, every so often a coach joins the fraternity; although, in the case of Les Miles, it’s something different. Miles may be one of the only coaches to become famous for the outlandish stunts he pulls — and normally succeeds at — during football games and for absolutely nothing he does off the field.
He’s not suave like Phil Jackson, pontificating about the merits of Buddha. Nor is he gregariously loud-mouthed like Rex Ryan. No, Les Miles is famous for being Les Miles, and for those awesome plays he calls. And for coaching LSU to the BCS Championship. And for eating grass during the game, like so:
So when word leaked about a viral video of Les Miles playing basketball against his children, complete with dunks and blocked shots, it’s impossibleto ignore. Just ask Spencer Hall, proprietor of Every Day Should Be Saturday, the best college football blog on the market.
The video, which leads this post, is apparently something viral for Nike and Converse, which is owned by Nike. That makes sense seeing how the video’s title is “It Must Have Been The Shoes” and for the fact that Miles is wearing both Nike and some awfully famous Converse during. While the video is indeed enough to whet the most discerning appetite, there is, of course, more where that came from. LSUFreek chimes in with an awesome animated gif:
Aside: If you haven’t heard of this awesome web image artist, changethat.
Other areas of genius, courtesy of the always-interesting Les Miles comes from the aforementioned Spencer Hall, who offers a humorous shot-by-shot breakdown of the magnificent video. A highlight of Hall’s post:
Everyone looks extremely uncomfortable with this arrangement except for Miles, who you’ll notice claps at home the way he does on the field: hands straight, eyes filled with glee, and with a silver turnkey rotating slowing in the middle of his back. His daughter is torn between her obligation to sing the anthem, and her burning desire to put a foot in the ass of the audience and let rip with her pitch-perfect rendition of the Nicki Minaj verse from “Monster.” Miles the Younger on the right knows her dreams, and is hoping she’ll bust a rhyme and shock the world. That’s what would make her happy. When she acquiesces to her father’s wishes, a small part of him dies as the anthem sounds in the air.
Not only is Hall’s commentary its typically funny stuff, it also includes a screenshot of Miles hanging on the rim after he dunks. That, alone, is worth the price of admission:
Hall’s accompanying text only makes things that much better:
We will make it our mission to not only go to Baton Rouge this fall, but also to get someone drunk enough to get this image of Miles dunking a basketball tattooed on their body for all eternity. We also would bet a hundred dollars cash money that Les Miles tore something in his groin doing this, and would double the bet to include Miles telling his doctor “I think I popped a cockspring, doc.”
To quote Charlie Sheen, Miles and Hall are both winning. Miles for the video and Hall for the commentary. One can only hope Miles continues down the viral video path, and if this is indeed a Nike-backed production, perhaps they should include Hall the next time they do something with Les Miles.
Also, if this is Nike, it’s pretty obvious they have a handle on this who “viral content” thing. Campaigns like Leeroy Smith and the Kobe Bryant/Aston Martin video immediately come to mind. Too bad none of them can compete with the awesomeness on display from Les Miles.
