  • Castlevania ‘Mirror of Fate’ HD Confirmed For PS3 & 360

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate received mixed, but generally good reviews when it was released for Nintendo 3DS back in March. The game combined some elements of classic Castlevania 2D side-scrollers and the combo-heavy hack-n-slash gameplay of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Now, Konami is bringing the mobile game to living room consoles with an HD remake.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD will make its way onto the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as a downloadable title. It will be released on Halloween, October 31. The game features upgraded HD visuals and new features such as leaderboards and a new “Boss Rush” gameplay mode.

Mirror of Fate HD’s release will come just months before the anticipated release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. A demo for Lords of Shadow 2 is included with copies of Mirror of Fate.

The story of Mirror of Fate serves as a preamble to the events in Lords of Shadow 2. Players take on the role of several characters, including members of the famed Belmont clan. Each character comes with different powers and move sets that will be required to battle the forces of Dracula.

Konami also announced that the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Collection will be released this Halloween as well. The bundle comes with Mirror of Fate HD and the original Lords of Shadow. The Reverie and Resurrection DLC contend for Lords of Shadow will also be included in the collection.

  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Is Finally Official

After a rumor and a leak from the teaser site’s source code, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is finally official. Even before rumors started to swirl around the title, it was pretty much a given that the Castlevania title that helped to rejuvenate the 20-plus-year-old franchise would get a sequel. After all, the first Lords of Shadow left players with a massive tease for future titles.

The three minute debut trailer is unfortunately all prerendered footage so don’t expect any gameplay here. This trailer is all about setting the stage for what’s been going on in the life of Gabriel Belmont, the protagonist from the first game. It’s rather impressive and shows that the game is going to keep its massive scale intact from the first game.

It’s worth noting that the trailer contains a fair amount of spoilers from the first game. If you have yet to play Lords of Shadow, I suggest that you refrain from watching the trailer. Let’s just say that the game is probably not going to go as far into the future as the first game hinted at, but Gabriel is still afflicted with his curse.

As for the very end of the trailer, it’s all really speculation right now as to who the mystery warrior is. Plenty of fans are speculating that it’s Alucard and that would make sense. Lords of Shadow is set in a different timeline from the regular Castlevania series so a new Alucard would give Mercurysteam a chance to explore his character in different ways than past Castlevania games.

As for platforms, the trailer only mentions Xbox 360 and PS3 at the moment. The rumor from Paul Gale said that it would also be hitting the Vita and Wii U. If it is hitting the Wii U, we will probably hear about it during Nintendo’s press conference on June 5. Either way, the game will not be coming until 2013. To hold you over, Konami will be publishing a new 3DS Castlevania game this year that’s also being developed by the talented guys over at Mercurysteam.

  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Outed By Teaser Site Source Code

One of the more interesting rumors that has come about this week said Konami was working on a sequel to their excellent Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Those rumors gained a bit more traction this week with the launch of a countdown Web site.

The Web site has the simple URL of TheDragonReturns.com with a date of May 31. It’s pretty innocuous, but it looks very Castlevania-like. The real proof comes from looking at the source code. Under og: site_name it says “CLOS Teaser Page.” Unless I’m missing something, CLOS obviously stands for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

The source code also comes with a description that is not visible on the main page:

“Dare you face the evil darkness? It is written that the creatures behind that door will return very soon to claim the souls of your loved ones, and send you straight to hell! Be aware!”

Not only does that sound exactly like Castlevania, but it’s also a call back to the story of the first Lords of Shadow. In it, Gabriel Belmont is fighting to resurrect his dead wife. Needless to say, he fails in that quest, but the sequel could see Gabriel fighting for another chance.

The previous rumor pointed to Lords of Shadow 2 seeing release on the PS3, Xbox 360, Vita and Wii U. The Wii U version is of more interest since it’s rumored to connect in some way with the new 3DS Castlevania game being developed.

We don’t have many details on either game yet, but the confirmation of this new teaser site verifies at least one part of the rumor. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a dual announcement for both games at E3 this year.

As a final word to Web site designers, keep telling us what the game is in the source code for teaser pages. It makes our jobs so much easier.
