  • Facebook Honored With GLAAD Award For Support Of LGBT Community

Tomorrow night in San Francisco, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation will hold its 23rd annual GLAAD Media Awards to honor “the most outstanding images of the LGBT community in the media.” And that ceremony will provide us with a first – an award to a social media company.

Facebook will be honored with a GLAAD Media Award, “for the company’s strong stand and leadership around bullying prevention as well as its inclusive options for LGBT users,” according to a blog post. Facebook is being given the award for a number of reasons – first and foremost for their part in the Network of Support.

Coming as a response to the slew of tragic stories about LGBT bullying victims committing suicide, Facebook announced that they would be partnering with a half-dozen organizations to form a “Network of Support” for bullied youth. That partnership saw Facebook team up with MTV’s A Thin Line campaign, GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the Trevor Project, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), and Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). The goal of this network is to provide support and resources for the bullied and those that want to speak up and report bullying.

Other reasons that GLAAD notes for giving Facebook the Media Award –

    • Facebook gave users the choice to list themselves in “civil unions” and “domestic partnerships.”
    • The addition of LGBT resources information the the Help Center
    • The launch of the “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” campaign with Time-Warner (which just hit Latin America this week)

The award will be received by Facebook Public Policy Communications Manager Andrew Noyes and Sara Sperling, who is in charge of “diversity and inclusion.” It will be handed out by a high school student named Brittany McMillan, whose idea for “Spirit Day” now sees millions of people wear purple and change their Facebook pics to purple in support of LGBT youth.

  • Anti-LGBT Violence Sends 3 To Hospital In D.C.

Three separate incidents of LGBT-related violence in a period of just 24 hours has the gay community and their supporters in outrage.

On March 11, a gay man was shot in a Columbia Heights IHOP after an altercation with a group of people seated near him. According to a police report, says the Washington Blade, the victim was berated by the group–composed of two males and one female–who repeatedly called him and his companions “faggies”. When the victim got up to pay his bill, the three suspects blocked his path and a fistfight ensued, during which a shot was fired. The victim, who did not want to release his name to the press, is currently being treated for a gunshot wound to his liver and is expected to be released from the hospital next week. Police have released descriptions of the three suspects and have listed the assault as a “hate crime with intent to kill”.

The second incident occurred just one day later when a 29 year-old gay man was assaulted while walking home on the evening of March 12th. Witnesses say he was attacked by two or three males, who hurled anti-gay insults at the victim while the beating took place. They left him with head injuries and a brutally broken jaw, which was so seriously injured that the victim had to be given a breathing tube to keep his airways from closing. Incredibly, after the first set of attackers left him on the street, a second group came along and robbed him, taking his cell phone, wallet, and iPad. Luckily he had already managed to call for help before lapsing into a semi-conscious state.

The third assault happened just a couple of hours later when a transgender woman was attacked from behind by two males. She reported being hit and knocked unconscious. Because her police report indicated that she couldn’t remember whether anything had been said by her attackers, the police didn’t immediately file it as a hate crime. The victim says she believes that her transgender status was the reason she was targeted, however, and the assault has since been classified as such.

Hate crimes such as these are not an uncommon occurrence, unfortunately, and while groups such as GLOV (Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence) appreciate the efforts of local police to work as quickly as possible to find those responsible, they also want to make it known that preventative efforts must be in place as well.

“We appreciate [D.C.] Metropolitan Police Department’s prompt action regarding the recent attacks and we offer the victims our strongest support while recovering,” said A.J. Singletary, chair of GLOV. “We expect MPD to respond by increasing patrols in the affected areas and tenaciously investigating the crimes committed.”

GLOV also released this statement on the DC Center blog, on behalf of the Metro Police Department:

“On Sunday, March 11, 2012, at approximately 6:30 am, officers from the Third District responded to the IHOP located in the 3100 block of 14th Street, NW, for a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Personnel from the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment.

An investigation revealed that the victim and an adult black male subject were engaged in an altercation inside the IHOP restaurant.

It is believed that the adult male subject who was initially in the altercation with the victim was accompanied by at least two other black male subjects and one other black female subject. Detectives are requesting that anyone with information regarding this incident or the identity of these subjects is asked to contact MPD at the below listed number.

Anyone who has information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411. DC Crime Solvers currently offers a reward of up to $1,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any assault with the intent to kill committed in the District of Columbia.”

Twitter was flooded by public response to these hate crimes, which have as yet been unsolved.

  • Anti-Gay “LGBT Facts” Group Sees Twitter Make Humor Out Of Their Hate

Normally, I wouldn’t give vile, hate-spewing, bigoted jackasses like @LGBTFacts the time of day, but this is simply too funny to pass up.

@LGBTFacts is a Twitter account solely devoted to “spreading the truth about the abhorrent homosexual lifestyle.” In reality, that translates to making up ridiculous claims about LGBT people and presenting them as “facts.” Here are some gems from their feed:

Homosexuals believe they deserve rights for sticking their genitals in places they don’t belong. #LGBTfacts 1 day ago via web · powered by @socialditto

They get more specific and pointed in their “facts,” but you can clearly see what’s at work here.

Now, @LGBTfacts only has about 300 followers – so it’s not like they are some giant force on the social network. But by using extremely popular hashtags like #tcot and #p2 in their tweets, they are most likely able to penetrate some Twitter conversations. At least it looks like they were able to get the attention of some LGBT activists.

Now here’s where this story gets funny. Displeased with the bile being spewed from @LGBTfacts, some people on Twitter decided to turn their handle into a hashtag. And thus began the fighting of hate with humor:

  • Chaz Bono on Dancing With The Stars: Cher Tweets Her Response to Detractors

Following Monday night’s announcement of the Dancing With The Stars celebrity cast and the subsequent partner pairing announcement on Wednesday, the internet has exploded over the inclusion of Chaz Bono for the show’s 13th season.

For a while there was plenty of buzz about Nancy Grace, but a few Casey Anthony jokes later, her involvement has fallen off the radar. People are in a frenzy over Chaz.

Of course, the issue at hand is the fact that Chaz Bono used to be Chastity Bono, famous daughter of Sonny and Cher. Over the last few years, Chaz has taken the steps to transition from a woman to a man – culminating in gender reassignment surgery last May.

Chaz is the first transgendered contestant that has ever been on the show. He has been paired with professional dancer Lacey Schwimmer.

Chaz’s upcoming appearance on the beloved reality show has drawn both harsh criticism as well as inspired defenses. Chaz’s mother, pop icon Cher, took to Twitter to express her thoughts on those attacking Chaz across the internet –

lovelies! Chaz is Being Viciously Attacked on Blogs & Message boards about being on DWTS!This is Still America right ? It took guts 2 do it 20 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

I support him no matter what he chooses 2do! God! will there always be haters! It took COURAGE 2 do dwts ! TG Chaz has an Unlimited supply  20 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Can u guys check out sites & give him your support ? BTW …Mothers don’t stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who fk with their children ! 20 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

As far as the attacks that Cher references, the posts on ABC.com announcing the cast and the pairings are one place where people are commenting. One user writes:

This show has completely lost a viewer(s). I am DISGUSTED that you would have Chaz Bono on there. He/she can live however he/she would like to live, but do we need to flaunt it for ratings? Really? I hope your ratings sink as low as you have sunk in having Chaz on there.

    Another says:

I am very disappointed in ABC for the decision to cast Chaz. I feel as though the media continues to push the limits and boundaries and throw junk in our faces, trying to force liberalism down our throats. I’m so sick of it. I love the show, but I absolutely refuse to watch this season. I will not accept sin no matter how “popular” it is in hollywood. I hope there are others who will take a stand against this by not watching this season.

    And another:

I am sick and tired of the homosexual agenda being shoved in my face! All I want is to be able to sit down and watch a fun show about dancing for a few hours each week. I do not care what someone’s sexual orientation is so long as it stays between them and the other person, behind closed doors…………there is no need to flaunt it during prime family viewing hours. What’s next? Will Carson be dancing in a dress? Sorry to say but I will NOT be watching and will also be boycotting DWTS sponsors!

People have taken to the Dancing With The Stars Facebook page to voice their criticisms as well –

Paul ChristoffersenThis probably won’t get posted, but I’ll try anyway. My wife and I have been big fans of DWTS since we discovered it in Season 3. We look forward to every Monday and Tuesday night. This year, however, we won’t be watching the show; your producers have gone waaaay over the line casting that transgender child of Sonny and Cher! Poor Sonny must be turning over in his grave! So, who will be Chaz’ partner? Cheryl, Tony, Derek, Kim? So many choices……

Hannah Burdick QuinnI don’t mind saying my husband and I won’t be watching the show this year. It’s bad enough at how over the top Bruno has gotten. It’s disgusting at what people don’t care about these days. God made women and he made man. There is no, “I am confused, I shouldn’t be what I am.” It’s disgusting, and I can’t believe how morals have seemed to disappear as the time goes by.

To be fair and completely honest, it seems to me that the Chaz supporters definitely outweigh the Chaz detractors. On Facebook, Twitter and comment boards there is a huge amount of “Go Chaz” and “Don’t listen to the haters” posts. But, I guess, plenty of negative feelings are out there.

Chaz himself tweeted about the reaction earlier today –

I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I received from everyone. Thanks so much. I don’t listen to the haters, but embrace the love. 5 hours ago via HootSuite · powered by @socialditto

Strangely enough, there seems to be little outrage towards new contestant Carson Kressley, the openly gay star of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy.

As far as the “agenda” that some say DWTS is pushing, an executive producer for the show told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s nonsense –

“We don’t have an agenda of any sorts. I think of the 120 celebrities we’ve put on the show, we’ve had, I think now, three transgender or gay contestants. If that’s a homosexual agenda, we’re not doing very well at it.”

  • Adam Carolla Apologizes via Twitter For Anti-Gay Comments

The latest comedian to get himself into trouble over comments about the LGBT community is Adam Carolla. The former co-host of The Man Show and current host of The Car Show made some remarks on his other show, The Adam Carolla Show, that didn’t sit well with the gay and transgender community.

On a podcast, Carolla discussed last week’s online petition that called for Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie to marry. During that discussion, he had some things to say about LGBTs. Here are some of the controversial comments (NSFW):

    • “When did everybody get fuckin’ lumped in with the gays”
    • When discussing transgender people, “When the fuck did we start giving a shit about these people.”
    • “Now there’s all these variations where it’s like ‘I’m a pre-op trans-gendered trans-neutral trans-fat’ – Shut the fuck up.”

Carolla goes on to discuss other similar topics like Chaz Bono and GLAAD.  If you want to hear the whole controversial clip, there’s an audio file here.

After the podcast went viral and people voiced their disapproval, Carolla issued this apology on Twitter –

I’m sorry my comments were hurtful. I’m a comedian not a politician. 19 hours ago via WhoSay · powered by @socialditto

GLAAD took issue with the “apology,” as it is one of those “if i hurt you, then I’m sorry” types of apologies. They issued an official statement on the matter –

Adam Carolla has a history of making anti-LGBT and racist statements. Networks and advertisers should remember that attacking people who are different from him, and following it with empty apologies, is just a regular part of Carolla’s routine.”

Rather than simply condemn Carolla’s remarks, we’re going to be reaching out to our network and studio partners, as well as the development executives we’ve worked with, to let them know that this incident needs to be taken seriously when considering him for future projects.

Given his history of anti-gay and racist comments, networks and advertisers should know what their money is supporting if they choose to hire Adam Carolla. The gross intolerance that he tries to pass off as comedy should not have a place on our airwaves.

Carolla tweeted this statement to his fans just a few hours ago –

Thank you all for your kind words, as long as you guys support the show nobody can stop us. I don’t work for cbs. I work for you 4 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Carolla isn’t the first comedian to find themself in hot water with the LGBT community. When Tracy Morgan made comments during a stand-up routine about killing his hypothetical gay son, gay rights groups voiced their disapproval and Morgan later apologized.

Some comedians stood up for Tracy Morgan, however, and said that comments made by a comedian during a comedy show must be looked at as just that – comedy. Even if some people don’t find it funny, every topic is on the table for comedians and they shouldn’t have to censor themselves during a show. The great Louis C.K. defended him on Twitter –

Tracey Morgan said something wrong, evil, cruel, ignorant and hilarious. He was on a comedy stage, not at a pulpit. 62 days ago via web · powered by @socialditto

It is clear to anyone with an ability to reason and understand people that he didn’t mean a word of what he said. he was fucking around. 62 days ago via web · powered by @socialditto

So called “jokes” that push people’s buttons have been a topic of discussion at WebProNews as of late. First, we asked about the Twitter hashtag #reasonstobeatyourgirlfriend, and just yesterday we told you about a Facebook page called ” You know she playing hard yo get when your chasing her down an alleyway” that is being accused by some of promoting “rape culture.”

  • Bert and Ernie Gay Marriage? PBS Says No, They’re Puppets

Who would have believed this? Apparently, suggesting that characters from America’s favorite children’s show should form a homosexual union sparks a lively debate. Go figure.

Yesterday, an online petition emerged on popular petition site Change.org. The petition ask supporters to sign in hopes that their voices could inspire the first on-air gay puppet marriage. “Let Bert & Ernie Get Married on Sesame Street” sent the internet into a frenzy yesterday and it doesn’t seem to be dying down at all.

We told you about the petition yesterday, and in that article we discussed the various motivators behind such a petition. Of course, the rumor of Bert & Ernie as a gay couple has been around for decades. Two men living together for years with no spouses, sharing a room together? Best friends or lovers – you decide.

The people behind the petition said that the marriage would do wonders to educated America’s children about tolerance and to show LGBT kids that “they are beautiful and their lives are worth living.”

Comments that we received fell all over the spectrum. Some asked whether or not children that young understand sexuality and gender preference. Others said that it was the parents’ job to teach tolerance. One commenter suggested that Sesame Street simply needs to give the two their own rooms to quell the rumor.

In the wake of all of the public comment about the petition, Sesame Workshop, the non-profit behind Sesame Street, issued a statement on their Facebook page. Sesame Workshop has issued statements on this issue before, saying that Bert & Ernie are puppets, not humans, and sexual orientation shouldn’t come into the discussion.

Seasame Street’s Twitter account linked to the Facebook statement –

Here’s @SesameWorkshop‘s statement on the Bert and Ernie petitions http://t.co/edlk2L8 3 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

    Here’s the official statement –

Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.

Pretty much echoes all previous statements. It’s important to note, I guess, that saying they have “no sexual orientation” still isn’t the same as saying they are heterosexual.

Bert & Ernie is a trending topic on Twitter. Check out some reaction –

PBS says Bert & Ernie are puppets, don’t have a sexual orientation. I’ll accept. Grounds? Prospect of sexual Big Bird is terrifying. 41 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

still mad that there’s a petition for Bert & Ernie to get married. IT’S A KIDS SHOW dammit. Leave Sesame Street alone. 3 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

At the time of my article yesterday the petition had about 1,500 signatures. As of right now it has about 5,500.

  • Should Bert & Ernie Get Married? Online Petition Thinks So [UPDATE]

UPDATE: Sesame Street responds to the online petition.

Bert & Ernie, America’s beloved puppet best friends, have been around for decades. And for much of that time, some have speculated that the Sesame Street duo represent a gay couple.

So, here’s the evidence that leads some to this conclusion: Bert & Ernie are two men, living together for an extended period of time. Although they sleep in separate beds, they sleep in the same room – kind of a Lucy/Ricky scenario. Many point to specific mannerisms that might give away a specific sexual orientation, but their existence is subject to debate.

And they love each other. Deniers say that it is a best friend type of camaraderie, supporters of the gay-couple belief would say that the characters “conduct themselves in the same loving, discreet way that millions of gay men, women and hand puppets do.”

And then you have these kinds of things that make it seems like Sesame Street has been hinting at something for a long time now –

While gay marriage supporters have, for quite some time, used the example of Bert & Ernie as a couple as a sort of rally cry for their cause, one online petition thinks that allowing Bert & Ernie to finally marry would be a great thing for LGBT rights.

Hosted on the popular change.org online activism platform, the petition “Let Bert & Ernie Get Married on Sesame Street” was started by one woman and now has over 1,100 signatures. it was started exactly one week ago today.

Here’s what the petition letter says:

In this horrific age of LGBT kids taking their own lives, they need to know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living. Aside from those that are committing suicide, the bullies that facilitate these tragedies need to learn that homophobia is NOT okay. They need to know that acceptance of their fellow human beings would indeed plant a seed of peace that will reverberate throughout the world. We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful. Only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different. Let Sesame Street and PBS Kids be a big part in saving many worthy lives

The cause has also launched a Facebook page.

The Sesame Workshop has denied that Bert & Ernie were created as a gay couple, saying that “Bert and Ernie, who’ve been on Sesame Street for 25 years, do not portray a gay couple, and there are no plans for them to do so in the future. They are puppets, not humans. Like all the Muppets created for Sesame Street, they were designed to help educate preschoolers. Bert and Ernie are characters who help demonstrate to children that despite their differences, they can be good friends.”

The rumor gained steam in 2010 when the official Sesame Street Twitter account (which posts messages from its characters) said this, speaking as Bert:

Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T’s? The only difference is mine is a little more ‘mo,’ a little less ‘hawk.’

Some said that the “mo” was a clear reference to “homosexual.” Are the makers of Sesame Street giving sly hints about Bert & Ernie via Twitter? Here are some recent tweets, you decide –

Bert: Ernie says he has a great joke about peanut butter but he won’t tell me. Says he doesn’t want to spread it around. (OHH I get it now.) 15 days ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Ernie: No I didn’t, Bert – they were MY feet. Heeheehee! 161 days ago via web · powered by @socialditto

What do you think? Could a Bert & Ernie marriage help teach equality and tolerance? Let us know in the comments.

  • Google Shows Gay Pride With Search Rainbow

If you didn’t know the history, you might think that Google was trying to be funny today. When you search the word “gay” or “lesbian,” your search results are adorned with a curved rainbow right around the search button.

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender month in the United States. The national awareness month was declared this year by President Obama, saying –

Every generation of Americans has brought our Nation closer to fulfilling its promise of equality. While progress has taken time, our achievements in advancing the rights of LGBT Americans remind us that history is on our side, and that the American people will never stop striving toward liberty and justice for all.

This is the third year in a row that President Obama has declared June LGBT month. Former President Bill Clinton did the same in 2000. There was controversy about the issue during George W. Bush’s presidency, as he said no to making June LGBT month.

Google has made no attempt to hide their support of gay rights. In 2008, Google publicly came out against California’s Proposition 8, which aimed to overturn the Californias Supreme Court Ruling allowing same-sex marriage by strictly defining marriage as an opposite-sex practice. The people of California passed the proposition. Google said –

It is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8.

Last year, Google proudly announced that over 300 of its employees had marched in the Pride parade in San Francisco. The company also participated in other pride parades across the globe in places like Poland and Tokyo.

And this month, Google is doing its smart part to promote LGBT month. Not only will terms like “gay,” “lesbian” and “transgender” prompt the rainbow to display in search results, but so will queries like “queer,” “GLAAD,” “homosexual” and of course “LGBT.”

It turns out that the person behind the “Gay Girl in Damascus” blog is actually an aspiring fiction writer from Georgia. And by Georgia I mean the state. And the ‘gay girl” is also a married guy.

Last week, a story was picked up about a pretty young girl living in Syria who had been kidnapped by state forces in the country and taken to an unknown location. The girl, named Amina, was the author of a popular blog entitled “Gay Girl In Damascus.” On June 6th, her readers were shocked to see a post from Amina’s cousin, who said that the girl had been kidnapped by “security services of the Baath party militia.”

The blog has nearly one million page views and provides followers with poetry, political statements and autobiographical content – all purportedly written by Amina, an out lesbian in Syria. The blog had even contained posts detailing encounters with anti-gay Syrians, most notably one where Amina’s father supposedly shamed two armed men out of kidnapping her in the middle of the night. Everything on the blog was reported as fact.

As the post about the kidnapping went live, it didn’t take long for the #freeAmina hashtag to trend on Twitter and a Facebook page declaring the same garnered thousands of likes in hours. When the story became national news many began to question not only the kidnapping account, but the identity of the blogger as well. Did Amina really exist?

Many on the internet, especially on Twitter, began to doubt the validity of Amina’s story. NPR’s Andy Carvin was one of the first to ask his followers if anyone had actually ever seen Amina? The answer was a resounding no. Her only interviews had been given via email and nobody could say with certitude what she looked like.

The many supposed photographs of Amina that began popping up on Facebook turned out to be unauthentic, as the Wall Street Journal broke the true identity of the girl in the photos. A London woman named Jelena Lecic came forward when her ex-husband notified her that her picture was all over various news sites.

Over the weekend, more information came out that linked the “Gay Girl in Damascus” to a man named Tom MacMaster, an American living abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland. After confronted with questions from various journalists regarding his role in the blog, he finally came clean.

The Gay Girl in Damascus blog is now entitled “A Hoax.” Yesterday, MacMaster issued this apology on the blog (still posted as Amina A.)

If you read that the way that I read that, it’s pretty far from an apology. MacMaster instead sticks by his actions, saying that he has created awareness and that he hasn’t harmed anyone.

But when you carry out interviews with the likes of CNN as Amina, you make people care about your story. And if you carry on a months-long online relationship with another woman who thinks you are real, I’m pretty sure that qualifies as harming someone. Whether MacMaster had a change of heart or just saw all the criticism he was taking on the internet, he sure changed his tune today.

Today, he has provided a much lengthier and more detailed apology, where he discusses his motivations for creating the Amina character out of thin air. According to MacMaster, the whole thing was an exercise in fiction writing –

It started innocently enough without any intention whatsoever of creating a massive hoax or duping the world. Ever since I was a child, I’ve wanted to write fiction but, when my first attempts met with universal rejection, I took a more serious look at my own work and I realized that I could not write conversation in a natural way nor could I convincingly write characters who weren’t me. I tried to get better and did various exercises (such as simply copying overheard conversations). Eventually, I would set up a number of profiles on dating sites with identities that were not my own as ways of interacting with real people in conversation but with a different personality than my own.

He says many times in this apology that he knows he has hurt people, and that he is sorry for that. He says that the whole situation spun out of control –

I wasn’t trying to pick fights or stir up controversy … I was instead trying to enlighten people. I posted comments on a blog; the owner asked me to contribute columns. I did so. I set up a blog to publish some of the things I’d written as Amina and, maybe, get a few comments. I did not expect anyone to read it or to care if they did.

And in the first month and more it was up, it received only a few visits. That was more than I had expected. Then, I wrote a perfect little story about the situation in Syria and the mutual affection between father and daughter … and to my shock, it went viral ….

And everything spiraled out of control. I couldn’t think of how to shut Amina down but …. It just kept on growing …

What a bizarre story this has turned out to be. Of course it’s the obvious move to put all the blame on Tom MacMaster for purposefully misleading everyone involved. He definitely shares the majority of the responsibility. But some blame has to be put on those who would believe everything they see on the internet.

Sometimes, the only way we can tell the difference between a novel and a history book is by its place on the shelf in the bookstore. On the internet, we don’t get convenient groupings, so I guess the moral of this story is to always stay vigilant. Always know that when you emotionally invest in someone’s life story online, there’s the chance that it is simply an elaborate work of fiction.

  • “Gay Girl In Damascus” Story Questioned By Skeptics

As the story of a young Syrian-American blogger being kidnapped makes its way across the internet, many are beginning to question the validity of the story – even the validity of the blogger in general.

Amina Abdallah runs the popular blog “A Gay Girl in Damascus,” which is described as “an out Syrian lesbian’s thoughts on life.” Her blog posts include poetry, personal stories and commentary on the recent violence sweeping Syria as the government cracks down of anti-regime protesters.

On Monday, a post appeared on the blog reportedly from Amina’s (full name Amina Abdallah Araf al Omari) cousin. She reported that Amina had been abducted by three uniformed, armed men near a bus station. She was thrown into a red van and taken to an unknown location. From the post:

The men are assumed to be members of one of the security services or the Baath Party militia. Amina’s present location is unknown and it is unclear if she is in a jail or being held elsewhere in Damascus.

The cousin later posted an update, saying that Amina’s father is desperately trying to find out where she is, but all they know right now is that she is in fact missing.

“A Gay Girl in Damascus” had become popular partially thanks to a post entitled “My Father, the hero.” In this post, Amina details an event where her father averted her kidnapping from her home by two armed men by shaming them into leaving.

Not only did the traditional media jump on the story, but the internet exploded as well. #FreeAmina began to trend on Twitter and a Facebook page popped up entitled “Free Amina Abdalla, Syrian Blogger.”

Now here’s where the story gets really interesting. A particular photo (see left), supposedly of Amina, was posted to the newly erected Facebook page and the media, both internet based and traditional, used the photo to identify Amina. It appears, however, that the picture that was circulating may not actually be Amina.

According to the WSJ, a London woman is saying that the photos supposedly of Amina Abdallah are actually in fact photos of her. The woman, Jelena Lecic, provided proof in the form of more photos that appeared to match the ones being passed off as Amina. Apparently Lecic’s ex-husband spotted the photos being circulated as Amina and recognized his ex-wife.

NYT blogger Robert Mackey just tweeted this, about the alleged photos’ similarity to Lecic’s Mypace account photo.

Photo from #FreeAmina FB page does look just like Myspace image of Jelena Lecic, Londoner identified by the publicist http://mysp.ac/ll5HHI 1 hour ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Here’s a screencap from her profile photo, as all the rest are set to private:

Many are also beginning to become skeptical about the existence of Amina, as it is coming out that nobody has really ever met Amina face to face. She has been interviewed by CNN, the BBC, and Al Jazeera but only via email.

NPR’s Andy Carvin asked this question via Twitter, and is having trouble finding any takers:

Just wanted to ask again: has anyone met #Amina (Gay Girl In Damascus) in person? If so, pls contact me. 21 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Sandra Bagaria, who is identified as Amina’s girlfriend, apparently has never seen her either. Their relationship is totally virtual, not even having seen each other via Skype. From the NYT Lede blog:

Although it remains possible that the blog’s author was indeed detained, and has been writing a factual, not fictional, account of recent events in Syria, readers should be aware that the one person who has identified herself — to The Times, the BBC and Al Jazeera — as a personal friend of the blogger, Sandra Bagaria, has now clarified that she has never actually met the author of the Gay Girl in Damascus blog. Ms. Bagaria told The Lede that she had also never conversed with Ms. Arraf face to face via Skype, but had conducted an online relationship with her since January entirely through Internet communications in writing, including more than 500 e-mails.

This sure is a compelling story, as somebody wrote all those blog posts, even if “Amina” doesn’t really exist. The flip side of this is that she may very well exist, and has simply kept an extremely low profile on purpose. If a person has actually been taken and is being held for some blog postings, it doesn’t matter if it’s a man or woman, or if their name really is Amina – or what they look like. It’s a fascinating and deeply troubling story.

The social media angle in all of this is compelling as well. It demonstrates, once again, how something can catch fire so quickly on Facebook and Twitter, while the facts don’t even come close to adding up. It’s fascinating to think that it’s possible that Amina was somehow crafted out of thin air, and given life on the internet.
