As Samsung and Apple continue to corner the smartphone market, other handset manufacturers are still bringing out their competitor smartphones. Whether or not they make any headway may have to do with branding as much as the hardware they are able to pack into the devices.

Today, LG announced its latest product, the Optimus G Pro. The smartphone will feature a 5.5-inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 resolution – an incredible 400 pixels per inch. It’s a display that’s less than two inches away from mini-tablet territory, and clearly positioned to compete with Samsung’s 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II smartphone.

The Korean manufacturer has also packed a huge 3,140mAh battery into the G Pro. The processor is a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon, and the smartphone comes with 2GB of RAM. 32GB of memory is standard, but the device will also have a microSD card slot. The cameras (13MP front/2.1MP back) are an upgrade even for this class of smartphone, and the G Pro will ship running Google’s Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS.

“The Optimus G Pro was developed specifically to deliver vivid and superb picture quality in a large display smartphone form factor,” said Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications. “We will continue to expand our position in the premium LTE smartphone segment with our superior display technology and unique user experience.”

It’s clear that LG is making a play for high-end consumers who want a long-lasting device with which to play HD games and video, and the price of the Optimus G Pro will no doubt reflect that. Whether the company can make a dent in Samsung’s impressive Galaxy Note sales remains to be seen.

  • Images Of Google’s New Nexus Phone Leak Online

The Nexus line is Google’s way of getting the latest and greatest Android developments into the hands of users and developers. The Galaxy Nexus is the latest smartphone to bear the branding, but Samsung will not be making the successor. Instead, Google has given the opportunity to LG.

Pictures of the LG Optimus Nexus have recently appeared on the Russian forum Baraholka. The pictures show a device that looks like a merger of the Galaxy Nexus and the already announced LG Optimus G. Here’s some of the more prominent pictures of the device including the obvious revelation that the device will run Jelly Bean:

These latest leaks only further accentuate a day filled with Nexus news, rumors and leaks. It was revealed by an NPD analyst that Google is working on a 10-inch tablet with Samsung that will sport the Nexus branding. The company is also working on a $99 budget tablet that will most assuredly also sport the Google branding.

After Samsung worked on the original Galaxy Nexus, it seems odd that LG would be called in to work on the next one. Google has mentioned in the past that it wants to work with a variety of OEMs on its Nexus line, and LG might have been next in line. Either way, the new phone is looking nice.

It’s important to note that these pictures represent hardware that’s not been finalized. Google and LG could, and probably will, apply some changes to the design before launch. It’s not known when the device will be unveiled, but the LG Optimus G is set for release at some point before the end of the year. The LG Nexus should hopefully be out sometime after that.

LG Announces the New Optimus G Smartphone

Today must be smartphone announcement day. In addition to Motorola’a announcement of its new RAZR i, LG today announced its new flagship smartphone device, the Optimus G.

LG’s Optimus G will have a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and either a 13MP or 8MP rear camera. The screen is a 4.7-inch, 1280 x 768 WXGA display and the phone will come with 32GB of storage space.

“The Optimus G is a groundbreaking premium device not only in the history of LG but also in the smartphone industry,” said Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics. “With the Optimus G, users will be able to experience unsurpassed UX features that will allow them to perform tasks that really enhance their daily lives.”

In its announcement, LG emphasized what it is calling the “cross-tasking” abilities of the Optimus G. It defines this ability as being able to complete multiple tasks simultaneously “without having to compromise other tasks.” As an example, LG promoted its QSlide feature, which allows the smartphone to display two screens simultaneously. LG states that users could use QSlide to send a text message or search the web while watching a video.

The Optimus G will go on sale in Korea next week and in “key” global markets during October.

LG has also released a video highlighting the design of the phone. In it Sera Park, the design team leader for the Optimus G, talks about the decisions that went into how the smartphone looks:
