  • Parking Garage Collapses in Los Angeles

No injuries are reported after part of a parking garage under construction in downtown Los Angeles collapsed Friday.

Fortunately no one was trapped beneath the debris, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“Fortunately we have heard that all workers have been accounted for,” said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.

The cause of the collapse — contained to a corner of the garage — is unknown at this time. Scott said the second floor of the structure collapsed onto the first floor.

According to Los Angeles Metro spokesman Paul Gonzales, workers were pouring concrete around 6:30 a.m. Friday when a worker heard an unusual sound and radioed everyone off the site. Workers had been cleared by 8:50, just before the structure went down.

“All the safety procedures worked as designed,” he said.

The garage — located in the 800 block of Keller Street — is part of a larger MTA project that will build a “modern, state-of-the-art bus maintenance facility to the area,” Gonzales said. When complete, it will take up about half a city block.

“This is going to need to be investigated,” Gonzales said. “Our target time to complete this was this summer — so that will be delayed.”
