  • Bill Murray Picks Kristen Wiig As Candidate For All-Female Ghostbusters

Comedy legend Bill Murray recently spoke about the rumored all-female Ghostbusters installment and gave a list of female actors he would like to hypothetically star in it. Murray was at the Toronto Independent Film Festival last week when he weighed in on the possible third Ghostbusters film being considered by Sony.

“I’m fine with it; I’d go to that movie. They’d probably have better outfits, too,” he said. “Melissa [McCarthy] would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny. God, she’s so funny! I like this [Mad Men’s] Linda Cardellini a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”

Murray was in Toronto for the premiere of his latest project, St. Vincent, in which he stars with McCarthy. In the film, he plays a cantankerous old man who strikes a strange friendship with the 12-year-old boy living next door. The Toronto Film Festival declared the day of the premiere “Bill Murray Day,” which entailed all-day screenings of the actor’s most popular films.

“It was a dizzy day. I rode my bicycle around the streets and people called out to me and waved and I had a lot of texts and I saw a lot of old friends I hadn’t seen for a long time. Then at the premiere the crowd was wild. I’d never seen anything quite like that before. Then we had the party and there was a great disc jockey,” said the Rushmore actor.

Meanwhile, Bridesmaids actor Wiig was thrilled that her fellow Saturday Night Live alumnus had mentioned her as one of the actors who could possibly star in an all-female Ghostbusters movie. “That’s very flattering,” she said. “I guess they’re making one from what I hear, which is pretty great.”

Later during her interview with Yahoo! Movies for her film The Skeleton Twins, Wiig made no bones about how she felt about Murray’s blessing. “I will do whatever Bill Murray tells me to,” she confessed.

  • Bill Murray Talks All-Female ‘Ghostbusters’ Cast

Bill Murray starred in Ghostbusters thirty years ago, and he doesn’t want to star in any future Ghostbusters productions. However, that hasn’t stopped the funny man and actor from discussing the possibility of a remake with an all-female cast. And what an amazing cast that would be.

“I’m fine with it; I’d go to that movie,” he said during an interview with The Toronto Star at the Toronto International Film Festival, where his drama/comedy with Melissa McCarthy, St. Vincent, premiered. “They’d probably have better outfits, too.”

Bill Murray even shared the names that immediately came to mind when he imagined that Ghostbusters all-female cast.

“Melissa (McCarthy) would be a spectacular Ghostbuster,” Murray said, mentioning his latest co-star first. “And Kristen Wiig is so funny. God, she’s funny!”

Word spread quickly, it seems, throughout those present at the Toronto International Film Festival.

    That’s not all, however.

“I like this (Mad Men’s) Linda Cardellini a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there,” he added.

    Kristen Wiig even replied.

Do you suppose Sony will heed Bill Murray’s suggestions and produce a new Ghostbusters with his all-female list of characters? It would likely have a box office draw, but probably nothing compared to the original.

Ghostbusters was a supernatural comedy film, first released in 1984. It was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and in addition to Bill Murray, starred Dan Akyroyd, and Harold Ramis. The film was originally scripted to include parts for John Belushi and John Candy. John Belushi’s death and Candy not opting in forced some re-writing. A huge box office success, Ghostbusters was nominated for two Oscars, but didn’t win.

Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy will appear in theaters next month in St. Vincent, where Murray plays the role of a retired, drunken war veteran–who also likes to gamble. McCarthy’s character–his new neighbor–recruits him to watch over her 12-year-old son. Murray’s character’s ideas of after-school entertainment are vastly different from those of McCarthy’s.

While fans might be a bit disappointed to learn Bill Murray won’t appear on the big screen in a new Ghostbusters, they will no doubt enjoy seeing him alongside Melissa McCarthy. St. Vincent opens in U.S. theaters on October 10th, and looks to be perfect vintage Murray–almost akin to his What About Bob? persona.

  • Bill Murray’s Dream All-Female ‘Ghostbusters’ Cast Includes Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Emma Stone

Bill Murray isn’t likely to star in a new Ghostbusters movie any time soon, but that doesn’t preclude him from sharing his thoughts on who he would cast in an all-female reboot of the classic 80s film.

Murray revealed his thoughts on the rumored all-female Ghostbusters movie that Sony is said to be considering while at the Toronto International Film Festival this week.

While Murray has nixed starring in any more Ghostbusters films, he’s certainly not against an all-female version of the hit movies.

“I’m fine with it; I’d go to that movie,” Murray told The Toronto Star at the TIFF premier of his film, St. Vincent, which also stars Melissa McCarthy. “They’d probably have better outfits, too.”

Speaking of McCarthy, Murray thinks the 44-year-old Tammy actress would be perfect in the film.

“Melissa would be a spectacular Ghostbuster,” Murray said. “And Kristen Wiig is so funny. God, she’s funny!”

    He didn’t stop there.

“I like this Linda Cardellini (of Mad Men) a lot,” he said. “And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”

McCarthy seems to think the idea of a reboot may actually materialize, but has not received offers from the studio.

“I think that somebody is really trying to do it, but nobody has talked to me about it,” she said. “Listen, if the people I think are doing it are doing it, I must never question them.”

Walking in the footsteps of the original cast members seems like a particularly challenging proposition for The Heat actress, but says working with the women on Murray’s list would be a dream come true.

“Oh, my God, that’s daunting. That’s taking on a legend, a legendary movie. But I would do anything with those ladies, anything at all,” she gushed.

In August, Sony was reportedly considering the idea of a reboot, with Bridesmaids director Paul Feig at the helm.

  • Kristen Wiig to Make Directorial Debut in New Film

Kristen Wiig is reuniting with her Bridesmaids co-writer, Annie Mumolo, in a new TriStar film that will also mark her debut as a director.

According to the New York Times, Wiig and Mumolo will write, produce and star in the untitled comedy, which follows “best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with.”

“We’re very excited to be writing,” the writing duo said in a statement. “We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”

“I’ve been wanting to direct for some time now,” said Wiig. “This seems like the perfect first project.”

“Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now. So we grabbed it. Perhaps more to the point, these two supremely talented ladies are always ahead of the comedy curve, and as we at TriStar push for originality, we are lucky as hell to be in business with them,” said TriStar chief Thomas E. Rothman. “The chance to hopefully make Kristen’s first film as a director is the cherry on top.”

Wiig and Mumolo’s 2011 Bridesmaids grossed $228 million worldwide on a $32 million budget and earned them an Oscar nomination for their original screenplay.

Bridesmaids led the way for other female driven-comedies like The Heat, Pitch Perfect and The To Do List, proving that female filmmakers could indeed make it in the Hollywood big leagues.

“Everybody talks about it needing to change, but Kristen actually wants to do something about it,” said Rothman, referring for the need for more female filmmakers.

The former Saturday Night Live star has recently departed from comedy a bit into more serious roles with films like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Hateship, Loveship and the upcoming The Skeleton Twins.

Mumolo is known for her roles in This Is 40, Afternoon Delight and the NBC series About a Boy. More recently, she wrote the screenplay for Joy, an upcoming biopic starring Jennifer Lawrence as the inventor of the Miracle Mop. The film will be directed by David O. Russell.

  • Kristen Wiig Gets Serious In New Trailer

Kristen Wiig is known for her ability to make us pee our pants with her voices, facial expressions, and general silliness. After winning our hearts on “Saturday Night Live”, she moved on to “Bridesmaids” and basically sealed her fate as Hollywood’s favorite funnywoman. But now, she’s looking for something a little different, and she’s found it in “Loveship Hateship”, a movie which also stars Guy Pearce and Nick Nolte.

    According to the synopsis:

“In her first dramatic role, Kristen Wiig gives “a beautifully restrained performance” (The Hollywood Reporter) as Johanna, a profoundly shy, shabby housekeeper hired to care for Mr. McCauley (Nick Nolte) and his granddaughter Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld). Despite her outgoing nature, Sabitha carries wounds from the death of her mother years before, while her father (Guy Pearce) is a hapless recovering drug addict with a certain ragged charm. In an act of mean-spirited rebellion, Sabitha fosters a pseudo-relationship between Johanna and her father through a series of forged emails, never dreaming of the potential harm. However, Johanna is not a demure cut-out, but rather a woman for whom the phrase ‘still waters run deep’ could have been coined, and the young girl’s cruel prank provokes Johanna to indulge in something long missing from her life: the dream of a future and a home of her own.”

  • Kristen Wiig Has First Date Live on TV: Fail!

    Awkward!

Probably wasn’t a good idea, but Kristen Wiig decided to have a first date with a suitor she met on-line on Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live show.

As one would imagine, it didn’t go so well.

The SNL actress interrupted her interview with Jimmy Kimmel to bring out a suitor named David.

Apparently the actress forgot that she had arranged a date with the man on the same evening as her scheduled appearance on the talk show, so she decided to invite him to the show.

“I kind of double-booked,” Wiig told Kimmel. “I went online and I met this guy and we’re supposed to have this date tonight and I totally forgot I was supposed to be here. So I told him he could come here.”

The two didn’t see eye to eye on much of anything, including their taste in movies.

“I like interesting, fun movies. I like to feel good when I come out of the theater,” she told her date.

“I like horror movies. Violent ones. A lot of blood and death. I like Satan,” replied David.

David also shared the fact that he shares a room and a bed with both his mom and aunt at home.

    Yea, she bolted.

  • Kristen Wiig Gives Thumbs Up to New ‘SNL’ Hires

Kristen Wiig may not have a handle on online dating–as clearly depicted in the above video–but she does have a handle on the new SNL cast hires. In addition to new cast member Sasheer Zamata, who was just hired following criticism of the show for not having a black woman on board, Saturday Night Live has also hired on two new writers. LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones recently joined the gang at SNL and their debut work will air on January 18th.

“I am excited about the new hire — it’s great,” Wiig said of Sasheer Zamata joining the cast. She also praised Lorne Michaels, the mastermind behind Saturday Night Live.

“He’s incredibly smart, he changed my life, ” the Secret Life of Water Mitty star said. “He’s just an incredible man.”

Spoils of Babylon, which Wiig presently stars in, was even created by former SNL writers. The show is definitely in her blood, despite having left her role as a main cast member.

Kristen Wiig has performed on 136 episodes of SNL throughout the years. Fans–and the cast and crew–love it when she returns for guest appearances.

Some of her other characters will live on in the memories of her devoted fans as well. Who could ever forget Gilly?

“The lessons I’ve learned in how to write, perform in an ensemble, be a part of a group and have that sort of a family mentality is something that I feel very fortunate that I got to experience and take with me,” she says of her time at SNL.

It no doubt gives viewers renewed faith in the show to know that Kristen Wiig approves of the new hires there–both those the fans will see on air and those behind the scenes as well. If even one of these new hires has the talent and tenacity Wiig has displayed during her career, then the coming seasons will continue providing late night laughs, for a long time to come.

Unfortunately fans probably won’t look to Kristen for advice on online dating. Do you suppose that has improved any since her visit with Jimmy Kimmel?

  • Kristen Wiig Talks “Walter Mitty”

    Kristen Wiig Talks “Walter Mitty”

Kristen Wiig, the talented SNL graduate, is recognized the world over for her brilliant comedic performances. Wiig recently starred in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues as well as Despicable Me 2, and finished work on How to Train Your Dragon 2. On Christmas day, fans will be treated to seeing a different side of the established actress. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig tells the story of a “dreamer” embarking on a real life journey. The script was written by Steve Conrad, and based on the 1939 New Yorker story created by James Thurber.

In a recent interview with WGAL, Wiig explained why many are fascinated with this tale, and how the underlying principles have been adapted for modern times. “What Steve did when he wrote the script was really special and brilliant in he took what we love about the character of Walter and modernized him in a way that we can all relate to. I think that’s one of the reasons that the story is so timeless, because we can all relate to Walter. We’re all a little bit of Walter in that we have a fantasy life and we all daydream. We all imagine our lives to be different.”

Part of being such a popular comedic actress means that there is a tendency to be typecast into comedic roles. Wiig was excited to participate in this film, and to show her diverse talents as a performer. “I was extremely flattered when Ben thought of me for the role because I knew he wasn’t going for a broad comedy. I love to have the opportunities to do other things and in this past year, I worked on three smaller films that are much more dramatic in tone. You have to be given the chance to do that and prove that you can do it or at least try.” Wiig said before explaining why comedic roles tend to find her. “I think it’s natural for people to associate you with the work that you’re known for, and that makes complete sense to me. I had been on SNL for seven years and did a handful of movies, all of which were comedies, so I totally understand why people think that’s all I do. So for Ben to think of me in this role, which I really wouldn’t say is comedic even though it has funny moments, is great. For the most part, it’s pretty subdued and subtle, and I was really excited for the opportunity.”

  • ‘Anchorman 2’ Star Will Ferrell Talks Sequel

Anchorman 2 is set to hit theaters a bit earlier than planned–December 18th instead of the 20th, with Will Ferrell’s character Ron Burgundy back on the big screen for the first time in 9 years. The film star talked recently about the sequel, along with director Adam McKay, dishing about past and present actors and a few surprises, too.

McKay told The Christian Science Monitor that Anchorman 2 begins with a prologue showing what has taken place in the lives of Rob Burgundy and his girlfriend and co-anchor Veronica Cornerstone (played by Christina Applegate) since the first film. The prologue ends with Burgundy working as an announcer at Sea World, during which he is caught yelling at a dolphin.

Flash forward a few minutes to Ron Burgundy, along with his news team (Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner) moving to New York, where they’ll hop on board at a 24-hour news network.

“[The network] literally just needed more bodies,” Will Ferrell said in an interview with Moviefone. “They had to hire so many people, a massive group of people, at one time, to be on around the clock; that’s why he and his news team are on at two in the morning. And, of course, they are horribly upset by that.”

Producers had to hire some new people for Anchorman 2 as well. In addition to at least some of the original cast, new cast members include Kristen Wiig, Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson and Meagan Good.

Twitter fans are certainly getting excited about the premiere.

These people clearly saw a special preview or a premiere in another country.

Will you be checking out Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy is Anchorman 2? What are some of your favorite lines from the first film?

  • Kristen Wiig and Fabrizio Moretti Back Together?

Kristen Wiig may not be on the dating market after all. The Saturday Night Live alum was reportedly seen with her ex-boyfriend, The Strokes drummer, Fabrizio Moretti, last Sunday sitting court side at a New York Knicks basketball game. The couple reportedly broke up in July under what Wiig’s friends called “amicable” circumstances.

The Bridemaids star told Marie Claire magazine in an interview in July of 2012 that she is actually a pretty shy person. However, the often tight-lipped Wiig, did open up a little bit about her personal life during the interview. “I will say that I’m happier than I’ve ever been and I feel very lucky right now.”

In 2011, Wiig took the comedy world by storm when she shattered the old Hollywood ideology that a female-led cast can’t make bank at the box office. Her smash hit Bridesmaids, which Wiig starred and co-write, made nearly $300 million worldwide. The comedian’s dark comedy We Got This Covered, co-starring Annette Bening and Matt Dillon, hits shelves on DVD/Blu-Ray today.

Here’s an exclusive look at one of the deleted scenes from the film that you can now see on the DVD/Blu-Ray edition:

The 40-year-old actress was married to actor Hayes Hargrove for four years. The couple divorced in 2009. In an interview with Look, Wiig stated that she would like to have a family and become a mother one day.

Wiig is currently filming the comedy Welcome to Me co-starring fellow SNL alum Will Ferrell. In the film, she plays a character named Alice, a woman with borderline personality disorder who wins the lottery and decides to spend her cash on starting her very own cable access talk show.

  • Ralph Macchio Walks Red Carpet With Actress Daughter

Ralph Macchio may be best known as “The Karate Kid”, but he’s still in the business after more than 30 years of experience. Now, he’s passing the torch to his daughter, Julia, who appears in the new film “Girl Most Likely” alongside Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, and Matt Dillon. The two walked the red carpet together at Monday night’s screening of the film.

“She has a little part in the movie she got all by herself – not through me!” Macchio told People.

Julia said she took pains to make sure no one on set knew who her famous father was, because she didn’t want special treatment.

“I didn’t want any help from him,” she said. “It was so much fun and a great first experience. Kristen [Wiig] is so nice, and everyone was so nice. I had one scene, but it was a great experience.”

The film is about Kristen Wiig’s character, Imogene, who suffers a breakdown after winning a Tony Award and is put into the care of her freewheeling, gambling mother, played by Bening. Julia plays a club-goer, and you can check her out in the hilarious clip below.

  • Kristen Wiig ‘Lost’ After Leaving Saturday Night Live

Many comedians use Saturday Night Live as a jumping off point for a long and successful movie or TV career, but the transition between the two can often be awkward. This week, Kristen Wiig encapsulated that awkwardness, saying she “floundered a bit” after leaving the show.

The comedian told Access Hollywood that she “felt a little lost” after her seven-year stint on the show was over. She related that the demanding six-day work week and the fact that cast members “live and breathe the show” made it difficult to adjust to a new life.

Now, however, Wiig has found her footing. The star is currently set to star in movies such as Anchorman: The Legend Continues and The Skeleton Twins. She will also be providing voice work for the animated films Despicable Me 2 and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Wiig first appeared on Saturday Night Live in 2005. During her time with the show, she was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Her final episode of SNL ended with host Mick Jagger kicking off a rendition of the Rolling Stones song “Ruby Tuesday,” which plays while current and former cast members dance with Wiig in turn.

  • Kristen Wiig Confirmed For “Anchorman 2” Appearance

Kristen Wiig is one of the funniest ladies in the business right now, and after her collaboration with Will Ferrell for a Golden Globes presentation, it’s not difficult to see why he’d want her on board for the sequel to his hit, “Anchorman”. Wiig has been confirmed in a role which early reports say is the love interest of Brick Tamland, played by Steve Carell. I guess he doesn’t love Lamp after all.

The sequel will also bring back original funnymen Paul Rudd and David Koechner and Ron Burgundy’s ladylove, Christina Applegate. Will Ferrell announced the plans for the sequel last March on “Conan”, dressed in full Ron Burgundy costume, of course.

  • Kristen Wiig Shares Cleavage, Relationship In Mag

Funny girl Kristen Wiig may have recently taken her leave from “Saturday Night Live”, but that doesn’t mean she’s gone from the minds and hearts of her fans…or their eyes. She appears on the most recent cover of Marie Claire Magazine, looking fresh and sexy in a white blazer and nothing else.

    (image)

But skin isn’t the only thing she shares with the magazine; she also talks a bit about her new boyfriend, Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti–who once dated Drew Barrymore–and why she left SNL.

“I know a lot of people probably assume, ‘Oh, she’s leaving because she is going to be doing movies now and things like that,’ which I will be,” she said. “But I just always knew it was going to be seven and that was it. I think maybe if I were 22, I could see myself staying a little bit, but it just felt like the right time.”

About her relationship, Wiig said she’s never been happier and feels extremely lucky; when asked why, she replied, “Where I am now. Who he is. Those are the two big ones.”

Wiig isn’t settling down in a low-key life after the enormous success of her 2011 film “Bridesmaids”; she’s got six films lined up on IMDB through 2014, in which she’ll be starring with major players like Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro.
