  • Cameron Diaz, Kirk Cameron Win Big at Razzies

Cameron Diaz and Kirk Cameron were big winners at the 35th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards. Dubbed ‘The Razzies,’ winners of these awards aren’t really winners at all.

Cameron Diaz won Razzies for Worst Actress, and also by default for appearing in the remake of Annie, which ‘won’ for Worst Remake, Ripoff or Sequel.

Evangelist and former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron topped Cameron Diaz with the number of Razzies he accumulated at the event that was held on Saturday.

Worst Picture went to Kirk Cameron for his Christian Christmas film, Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas.

Worst Actor went to Kirk Cameron for the same film.

Worst Screenplay went to Kirk Cameron for–yes, you guessed it–the very same film.

Cameron Diaz earned the title for her performances in the raunchy comedies The Other Woman, in which a wife and two mistresses of the same man team up to mentally torture him, and also for Sex Tape, where a couple accidentally releases their private ‘performance’ to the cloud.

Maybe it was something about the name ‘Cameron.’ Was it somehow jinxed at this year’s Razzies? Cameron Diaz and Kirk Cameron seemed to be front and center on the event’s hit list. And even though Cameron Diaz only won two Razzies, she was nominated for even more.

The Razzies are held every year on the day before The Oscars, in the organization’s effort to hand out ‘anti-Oscars.’

Do you think Cameron Diaz deserved to win at The Razzies? And what about Kirk Cameron? Okay, if you actually saw even a trailer for Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas, you don’t need to answer that one.

  • Saving Christmas Movie Is Rated Worst Film Of All Time On IMDB

Saving Christmas, otherwise known as Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas, is the latest evangelical film that attempts to frame Christmas as being under attack by secular culture. Well, at least that’s what the marketing would have you believe. As it turns out, it’s something else entirely, and it has viewers trashing the movie.

According to IMDB users, Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas is the worst movie of all time with a score of 1.5 stars. To put things into perspective, Saving Christmas is rated worse than the number two worst film of all time – Birdemic: Shock and Terror. Kirk Cameron’s latest shares the spotlight with other film travesties, such as Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2, Manos: The Hands of Fate and Disaster Movie.

So, why do people hate this movie so much? If you listen to Cameron, he thinks it’s the standard secular reaction to any Christian film. When the film received a 0 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Cameron took to his Facebook page asking fans to at least raise the user score to counter the negative critic reviews:

Cameron’s fanbase has at least somewhat come to his rescue on Rotten Tomatoes as the movie has a 32 percent user rating. Most of the reviews, however, are still overwhelmingly negative with some calling out the film’s flimsy theology and worship of consumerism. Here’s an excerpt from Nate Zoebl’s user review:

Amazingly, Saving Christmas ends up becoming a misguided and ludicrous defense of materialism and the commercialism attached to Christmas. In Cameron’s very narrow perspective, anything associated with the holiday has to be positive. Yes, Cameron literally argues that all the material excess and spending actually honors God. Instead of looking at the presents under the tree as just that, look at them as the outline of a skyline of a new Jerusalem, Cameron offers in one of the more head-scratching moments. He conflates the spending of money with celebration, admonishing people to buy “the biggest ham, the richest butter” as long as they just don’t “max out their credit cards.” That’s the limit he sets, so everything below that must be agreeable. Just to hammer the message home further, Cameron says that materialism is good because “Christ was made material.” That sure is a slippery slope of ethics there. It’s not much of a leap to then justify greed or to equate spending the most money with being the godliest. Why would any film, let alone a Christian one, choose to defend unchecked materialism?

As for critics, many felt the same way. Peter Sobczynski of Roger Ebert gave the film one star and criticized the film for the same pro-materialism message that seems to pervade the film. It’s definitely worth a read if you want to see all the problems with the film.

If you still want to see what all the hubbub is about, I suggest checking out the trailer.

Save yourself a few bucks and just watch The Santa Clause instead. If you want to watch former sitcom stars embarrassing themselves around the holidays, why not spend that time with the marginally less offensive Tim Allen.

  • Kirk Cameron to Save Christmas at a Theater Near You

Kirk Cameron is setting out to save Christmas. If you didn’t know it needed saving, the evangelist and former Growing Pains star assures everyone that it does.

“My hope for Saving Christmas is that families all across the country will join with my family in putting Christ back into Christmas!” he said. For too many years Christmas has been attacked and hammered by those outside the church, and it’s even changed how we think about Christmas inside the church. We are proudly going to put Christ back into Christmas and remind Christians why this is not only a holy day, but a celebration as well. I believe that families will love this movie!”

Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas is scheduled for a limited theater run beginning on November 14th. It is a collaborated effort on behalf of Cameron’s CamFam Studios and Nashville-based Provident Films.

“I am extremely excited to begin this new, ongoing relationship with Provident Films,” Kirk Cameron said in a press release.

Two additional films are already in the works by this collaboration. It is expected that the second and third films in the partnership between CamFam Studios and Provident Films will release in 2015 and 2016. Cameron’s latest project arrives just months after he voiced enthusiasm for filmmakers in the Christian community.

“I’m really excited about what I see coming out of the Christian movie industry,” the actor told The Christian Post. “There’s independent films coming out all over the place. You look at movies like ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ the Noah movie that’s coming out with Russell Crowe… Movies like ‘Fireproof’ and ‘Courageous’ which have done phenomenally well. It’s very exciting to see a new wave of young filmmakers come out with a biblical world view. They have an understanding of the Gospel and how to tell stories. They have the technology and equipment that’s so affordable that it’s all beginning to look fantastic.”

Even though Kirk Cameron is a bit heavy hitting when it comes to his evangelism, he might just be on to something with this new film. Christians–whether they be fundamentalists or simply every day recognizers of Christ as their higher power–have long complained about the commercialism at Christmas time. Maybe something in Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas will resonate with some of them.

Might you consider this as part one of your family’s pre-Christmas activities?
