  • Lena Headey Pleased with Game of Thrones Rape Scene

The HBO epic fantasy drama Game of Thrones recently aired a rape scene involving stars Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, which has caused some controversy, and now Headey has commented that “it felt great.”

For those uninitiated in the lore and dealings of the Game of Thrones fantasy realms of Westeros and Essos, Headey and Coster-Waldau portray the aristocratic and incestuous twins Cersei and Jaime Lannister. The oldest of their inbred children grows to become an evil king named Joffrey, who is poisoned during his wedding reception, an event casually referred to by fans as “The Purple Wedding.”

Cersei later displays a softer side to her trademark vitriol by while excessively mourning over her dead son, but then twin Jamie enters the chamber and rapes her in front of Joffrey’s corpse. George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, A Song of Fire and Ice, depicts the event differently, but show producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss decided to adjust the tone of the scene in their adaptation.

Fan reaction has been a mix of sympathy for the Cersei character, confusion over the Jamie character, who had been reforming himself a bit after losing his right hand, and a bit of outrage over the scene in general, which is significant for a show known for pushing the envelope of bad taste.

    Cersei, Jaime and brother Tyrion:

In a move likely to court further controversy, Headey explains her take on the rape scene. “She’s staring at the body of her dead son… she’s joined by her brother who’s also her lover, so, you know we’ve got bigger problems than the one everyone is talking about.”

There’s lust and desperation… there was this need,” Headey says, describing Cersei’s motivations. “It wasn’t right and yet it felt great and it played out the way it did. And I was really happy with it.”

In related news, Headey reportedly purchased a new fixer-upper house in Sherman Oaks, California.

  • King Joffrey Isn’t A Fan Of Celebrity Worship

King Joffrey may be an insufferable little jerk, but the actor who plays him recently made it clear that the two of them don’t share the same ideals or attitude.

Jack Gleeson made an appearance recently at the Oxford Union and spoke about the way society reveres celebrities…and the way celebrities fall for it despite the fickle nature of their own fans.

“What’s ironic is that you see celebrity endorsing things like musical tampons, and appearing in advertisements for lavender scented teeth whiteners or something,” Gleeson said. “Wielding goods whose sell-by dates will ironically, outlast theirs.”

Gleeson, who has been acting since he was pretty young (he made a small appearance in “Batman Begins’), found immeasurable fame when he signed on with “Game Of Thrones”, a show that found fans in the least likely of places with its stories of human trials in a fantasy world. As King Joffrey, he’s the guy we all love to hate, and even Gleeson can’t find too many things to like about the character.

“I would like to try and defend him, but I would have a pretty hard job doing it. I suppose he’s the product of his context and his family. In terms of redeemable qualities, there wouldn’t be many,” he said.

Gleeson announced recently that he will be retiring from acting, saying his heart isn’t in it anymore.

“It was always a recreation beforehand, but when I started doing Game of Thrones perhaps the reality was made too real for me…the lifestyle that comes with being an actor in a successful TV show isn’t something I gravitate towards. Since going to Trinity and garnering an interest in philosophy and with Goal and my theater company I’ve kind of just re-evaluated what I want to do,” he said.
