  • Amazon Kindle Oasis Unveiled with ‘Months’ of Battery Life

Amazon Kindle Oasis Unveiled with ‘Months’ of Battery Life

Amazon just unveiled its 8th-generation Kindle device called the Kindle Oasis. It’s thinner and lighter, and it comes with a charging cover that allows the device “months” of battery life according to the company. This is clearly the most interesting aspect of the Oasis.

It features a new dual-battery system. When you connect the cover to the device, the battery in the cover begins recharging it automatically.

“The battery in the cover uses a custom cell architecture that optimizes power and energy while keeping an incredibly small and light form factor and delivering months of battery life,” Amazon explains. “You can charge the device and cover simultaneously while both are snapped together and plugged in. Plus, a new hibernation mode minimizes power consumption when your Kindle is inactive.”

The device has an ergonomic grip and weights only 4.6 ounces. At its thinnest point it is 3.4 mm thick. It’s 20% lighter than any other Kindle.

Screen Shot 2016-04-13 at 9.30.40 AM

“Kindle Oasis is designed for extended reading sessions—with an entirely reimagined shape, Kindle Oasis shifts the center of gravity to your palm, to rest in your hand like the spine of a book so that the device feels balanced for one-handed reading,” the company says. “Effortlessly turn the page with either the touch display or physical buttons. Oasis is comfortable to read on with either hand—a built-in accelerometer detects whether you are reading with your left or right hand, and automatically rotates the page and page turn buttons to match.”

The device is now available for pre-order for $289.99. It will ship in the coming weeks. Amazon gushes more about it here.

The Kindle line-up now includes Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Voyage and Kindle Oasis.

  • Amazon Updates Kindle For iOS App

Amazon Updates Kindle For iOS App

Amazon just launched an update to its Kindle for iOS app, introducing a bunch of new features, including a book browser for iPad, a new welcome experience, Goodreads integration, “Next in Series” info, book detail pages in the library, and Audible Progressive Play.

With the browser feature, Kindle Unlimited subscribers can now browse over 700,000 books, and start reading them without leaving the app. Amazon launched Kindle Unlimited back in the summer. It’s basically the company’s Netflix for reading. Users can tap on a book cover to display a detail page that provides the book description and customer reviews. The Browser also gives users the ability to search for any title from Amazon’s catalog of Kindle books.

The new welcome experience lets new users select their favorite genres, rate books they’ve read, and choose books they want to read. It will provide personalized book sample suggestions (powered by Goodreads) to download and read for free.

“Goodreads customers can now share reading progress updates, highlights, and more from inside the Kindle book they are reading,” says Amazon. “Once connected (click on the Settings icon in the bottom right hand corner of the Library or Home page, then click on Social Network and select Goodreads to link accounts), customers can share reading progress updates using the new [g] button in the reader controls; share quotes on Goodreads, Facebook or Twitter; or rate and review a book on Goodreads and Amazon from the ‘Before You Go’ screen at the end of a book.”

Users who finish a book in a series can learn about the next book, and add it to their wish list from the ‘Before You Go’ screen.

Additionally, book details can now be viewed by long pressing a book cover in the library and selecting “Book Details.” Users will see a synopsis of the book, Amazon reviews, etc.

With the Audible Progressive Play feature, you can start playing audiobooks as they’re downloading. They can be played once you’ve downloaded past your current reading location.

The Goodreads blog has more on the Goodreads integration.

Last week, Amazon announced its best-selling books of the year.

  • Amazon Reports Big Increase In Black Friday Sales Of Its Devices

Amazon Reports Big Increase In Black Friday Sales Of Its Devices

This year was a lot better than last year when it comes to Black Friday sales of Amazon’s tablets and e-readers, according to the company.

Amazon said Black Friday sales of Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets on Amazon.com grew “significantly” year over year. Fire tablet sales on the site were up over 3x year over year on Friday, while Kindle e-reader sales on Black Friday grew nearly 4x.

The company didn’t provide exact figures, nor did it mention sales of its Fire TV, Fire Stick, or Fire Phone devices.

“This holiday there are going to be a lot of customers opening up new Amazon devices,” said Dave Limp, Senior Vice President of Amazon Devices. “We’re energized by the year over year growth of tablet and e-reader Black Friday sales on Amazon.com, plus the success of the new product categories we’ve launched this year.”

In September, Amazon unveiled its latest lines of tablets and e-readers, including the Kindle Voyage, a new $79 Kindle, a new Fire HD tablet, the Fire HDX, and the Fire HD Kids Edition.

Amazon is running a Cyber Monday deal today for its Fire TV device at $69, which puts it at a 30% discount. Of course this is still twice as much as its Fire Stick streaming device, which is more of a direct competitor to Google’s $35 Chromecast.

  • Kindle Finally Lets You and Your Family Share Ebooks

Amazon told us that it was coming soon, and today is the day. You can finally share ebooks with your family on your Kindle devices.

Amazon has announced a slew of new features for its Kindle line, and ‘Household and Family Library’ is one of them. This feature lets two adults (you and your partner) share your ebooks across Amazon accounts, and also gives you the ability to manage up to four kids accounts.

Family Library lets you share across Kindle devices, and even lets you share across Kindle apps on non-Amazon devices. The only drawback is that this only applies to ebooks – not previously-purchased TV shows or movies.

Though Family Library is the most significant new feature announced today, Amazon also unveiled a few other interesting things. For instance, there’s Word Wise, which aims to help people better understand what they’re reading by displaying simple definitions above difficult words.

Amazon has also added deeper Goodreads integration and has improved search.

You can snag the update here.

  • Amazon Opens Kindle Scout For Voting

Amazon Opens Kindle Scout For Voting

Amazon announced its new reader-powered publishing program Kindle Scout can now be visited by users, who can find excerpts from unreleased books, and vote on what should get published.

The reader previews excerpts from books that haven’t been published, and nominates up to three at a time. At the end of 30 days, the Kindle Scout team reviews popular books, and selects which ones get to be published. Readers who nominated the published book get a free, full-length Kindle edition a week ahead of its official release date.

“Amazon customers are passionate readers who have long influenced which books become breakout best sellers,” said Russ Grandinetti, Senior Vice President of Kindle. “With the launch of Kindle Scout, readers now have an even more direct say in what gets published and can get free books and discover new favorite authors in the process.”

“We’re always looking for new ways to add meaningful connections between readers and authors,” said Dina Hilal, General Manager of Kindle Scout. “We’ve been delighted by the submissions so far and are excited to give readers a say in which books they want to read. We also hope they’ll have a lot of fun getting to know authors and their work.”

New books are submitted to Kindle Scouts every day.

  • Amazon Ships Kindle Voyage Device

    Amazon Ships Kindle Voyage Device

Amazon announced that its new Kindle Voyage device is now shipping. The company unveiled it last month along with a handful of other Kindle and tablet devices.

Amazon considers it its most advanced Kindle to date. It has a new design, and the brightest, highest-resolution display for a Kindle so far. It’s $199.

“Kindle Voyage is designed to disappear so you can lose yourself in a story,” said Dave Limp, Senior Vice President, Amazon Devices. “This is the most advanced Kindle we’ve ever built. Customer response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re working to build more as fast as we can. We can’t wait to get Kindle Voyage into the hands of readers starting today.”

The device has been getting pretty good reviews from all kinds of credible tech publications, so it’s likely going to be a hot seller with the holiday season approaching.

    More on the device here.

  • Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, Kindle Voyage, Kindle For Kids, Kindle With More Storage: Ready For October Release

Amazon is unleashing a litany of new and improved models of its Kindle tablet and e-reader line. For those interested in some pre-Black Friday holiday deals, the models are set to go on sale in October.

“Are phablets killing tablets?” wrote Anna Attkisson of Tom’s Guide, “Amazon is definitely not jumping on that bandwagon.” The amount of updates corresponds with a new Fire OS (4.0), which lets families share across accounts. Attkisson further outlined the differences in the products: Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 ($379) is the most advanced, while the Kindle Fire HD 6, HD 7 ($99) is for those looking for a deal. Meanwhile, Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition ($149) brings the Kindle to the kid family side of things, and it comes with free replacement for two years.

Amazon will also throw in a year of FreeTime Unlimited with the Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition. Adults will probably want to look into the adult version of Unlimited for themselves, which has its own monthly fee:

According to the L.A. Times, Amazon is also updating their generic Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite for lower cost and more storage. They are also releasing a Kindle Voyage, which is designed for the book lover in mind, who also likes 3G cellular connectivity.

When it comes to the fanciest item for the lowest cost, the Kindle Fire HD is probably your best bet. As Business Insider put it, “If $99 feels dirt-cheap for this tablet, it’s because it is.”

“We make money when customers use these devices, not when they buy them,” an Amazon representative told them, “We sell at break-even prices.”

But when it comes to power no matter the cost, Amazon is pretty proud of the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9. “The team has packed an incredible amount of technology and innovation into the new Fire HDX-an incredible HDX display,” Amazon’s chief executive Jeff Bezos told MVC, “A powerful quad-core processor, a 70% faster graphics engine, exceptional audio, and faster Wi-Fi-and it’s still startlingly light. Fire HDX combines excellent hardware with exclusive features from Fire OS4 including Firefly, the Mayday button, Family Library, ASAP and more.”

  • Amazon Announces A Bunch Of New Kindle Devices

Amazon Announces A Bunch Of New Kindle Devices

Amazon made a whole bunch of Kindle-related announcements late on Wednesday, including some new devices and a new OS.

    New Kindles

First off, Amazon unveiled its seventh-generation Kindle, the Kindle Voyage. Amazon calls this its “most advanced Kindle ever”. Well, I would hope so. “Not as advanced as the last one” doesn’t sound nearly as appealing. The display is brighter, has higher resolution, and higher contrast. It also has “reimagined” page turns. It costs $199.

The company says, “Kindle Voyage features an all-new design, with a beautiful flush glass front and a magnesium back, so it is strong, thin, and light. At just 7.6 mm thin and weighing less than 6.4 ounces, Kindle Voyage is the thinnest device we’ve ever built, making it even easier to hold with one hand and read for hours.”

It has an adaptive, smarter front light, which is 39% brighter, and is available with free 3G. There’s also a new oragami-style cover design.

The company also unveiled a new $79 Kindle, which includes a 20% faster processor, twice the storage of its predecessor, and a new touch interface.

Both devices are now available for pre-order.

The new Kindle family consists of the Kindle, the previously announced Kindle Paperwhite, and the Kindle Voyage. But that’s not including the Kindle Fire line, which brings us to the next announcements.

    New Fires

Amazon also announced it’s most powerful tablet to date, the new Fire HD, apparently dropping the “Kindle” from the branding. It features a quad-core processor, front and rear-facing cameras, an HD display, and five color choices. It also comes in two sizes – 6” for $99 and 7” for $139.

CEO Jeff Bezos says the device is the “most powerful tablet under $100.”

Here’s the feature rundown from the announcement:

High-definition display—Crisp and vivid with over 1 million pixels (252 ppi for 6”, 216 ppi for 7”), now brighter than the previous generation Kindle Fire HD, with vibrant colors and whiter whites.

Ultrafast quad-core processor—Running at up to 1.5 GHz, the quad-core processor has 3x the graphics performance of the Samsung Tab 4—Fire HD can run even the most graphically intensive games.

Front and rear-facing cameras—Video chat with friends and family with the front facing camera; take photos or capture videos in 1080

Pocketable design—Small and portable so it fits in a pocket or purse and is easy to hold with one hand.

Incredible reliability—With a Gorilla Glass display and a design that is engineered for best-in-class reliability, you don’t have to worry about Fire HD breaking. Many other tablets cut corners on reliability—in lab testing they are anywhere from 2x to 20x more likely than Fire HD to break if dropped. Even the iPad mini is 2x more likely to break.

Five fun colors—Fire HD is available in black, white, cobalt, magenta, and citron.

Profiles give everyone a personalized experience—With Profiles, each family member gets their own profile, including individual email, Facebook and Twitter accounts, page in the book, spot in a movie, and game levels.

Family Library—Never again worry about whose account has the Prime membership or who bought that book you want to read. Family Library links your Amazon account to that of your spouse or partner so you can easily share apps, games, audiobooks, books, and Prime Instant Video content within your household without changing accounts. Family Library lets families share their content while using a single Fire tablet with different profiles, or also across multiple devices, including Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, Fire phone, and Amazon Fire TV, as well as on all of the other most popular devices and platforms with the free Kindle, Audible, and Amazon Instant Video apps. Family Library will be coming soon as part of a free, over-the-air software update.

ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction)—Customers loved it on Amazon Fire TV, so now available on tablets by popular demand, ASAP predicts which movies and TV episodes you’ll want to watch and prepares them for instant playback before you even hit play, so they start instantly.

Amazon-exclusive features—X-Ray, Second Screen, Amazon FreeTime, Prime Instant Video Downloads, and more.
Dolby Digital Plus Audio—The standard in high-end audio. Fire HD delivers crisp and clear sound without distortion.
All-day battery life—Delivers up to 8 hours of reading, listening to music, watching video, and browsing the web.

Stay connected and productive—Fast web browsing, email and calendar support, plus a new pre-loaded WPS Office app lets you create, edit, and view Office documents.

World’s best content ecosystem—Over 33 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, magazines, and Android apps and games—including Facebook, Netflix, iHeartRadio, Twitter, Angry Birds Stella, Minecraft: Pocket Edition, and more—with free, unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content.

There are also new accessories for the device, including a new protective cover and a series of adapters.

Then there’s the Fire HDX, which is powered by a quad-core 2.5 GHz processor and a 70% faster graphics engine. The display features Dynamic Light Control which automatically adjusts the color. It’s also the first tablet with Dolby Atmos audio.

Here’s the feature rundown on this one:

Powerful 2.5 GHz processor with a 70% faster graphics engine for exceptional speed and fluidity, especially for graphically-intensive games.

Exclusive HDX display with incredible pixel density (339 ppi) and perfect 100% sRGB color accuracy—now with Dynamic Light Control, which makes the pages of a book more closely resemble a real piece of paper in different lighting conditions.

Startlingly light design—20% lighter than iPad Air.

Exclusive new audio—twice as loud as iPad Air, with crisp, clear sound and no distortion; plus Fire HDX is the first tablet with Dolby Atmos.

Fastest Wi-Fi, with support for 802.11ac MIMO which delivers up to 4x the peak bandwidth.

Available with ultrafast 4G LTE wireless.

New Fire Keyboard is the thinnest and lightest full-featured tablet keyboard, with a trackpad to make productivity and navigation easier than ever.

Powered by the latest version of Fire OS—Fire OS 4 “Sangria”—with hundreds of new and upgraded features, platform updates, and Amazon-exclusive services.

Family Library lets all members of your household access your apps, games, audiobooks, books, and Prime Instant Video content, even if they use a different Amazon account.

Free, unlimited cloud storage for photos taken with new Fire tablets, automatically backed-up wirelessly.

Front-facing HD camera makes it easy to stay in touch with Skype; 8MP rear-facing camera allows for high-resolution photos and 1080p HD video, and includes an LED flash, Electronic Image Stabilization, and a wide-aperture f/2.2 lens. The Camera application also allows customers to capture panoramas, lenticulars, and HDR recommended shots, and the film strip gives access to recent photos and videos, along with the ability to view, edit, share, and delete right from the camera.

Firefly lets you quickly identify printed web and email addresses, phone numbers, QR and bar codes, plus over 100 million items, including movies, TV episodes, songs, and products.

ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction) predicts which movies and TV episodes you’ll want to watch and buffers them for playback before you even hit play, so videos start instantly.

The Mayday button delivers revolutionary live tech support—one touch connects you to an Amazon expert who can guide you remotely through any feature—24×7, 365 days a year, and it’s free. Nearly 75% of Fire HDX and Fire phone customer questions now come via the Mayday button.

Then there’s the Fire HD Kids Edition, which includes a two-year guarantee, so they’ll replace if if the kid breaks it. It also has a free year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, which gives kids access to 5,000 books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games.

It has a quad-core processor, an HD display, front- and rear-facing cameras, Dolby Digital audio, and access to Amazon’s movies, TV shows, songs, books, and Android apps and games.

    It costs $149 for a 6” and $189 for a 7”.

    New Operating System

Finally, Amazon introduced its new operating system – Fire OS 4 Sangria, which comes pre-loaded on the new Fire HD and Fire HDX tablets, and will be available as a free, over-the-air update for all 3rd generation Fire tablets.

“When we think about Fire OS, we start with what matters to customers—ease of use and performance,” said Dave Limp, Senior Vice President of Amazon Devices. “Fire OS 4 improves in both of these areas, and deeply integrates software, content, and the Cloud to deliver services that are only available from Amazon, including Family Library, Firefly, and free cloud storage for photos.”

    It’s based on Android KitKat.

Pre-orders are available for all the new devices.

  • Amazon Launches Kindle Unlimited Service

Earlier this week, a new Amazon product called Kindle Unlimited was spotted in the wild without any announcement from the company. Now, that announcement has come.

Kindle Unlimited costs $9.99 a month, and gives customers unlimited access to over 600,000 eBooks and thousands of audiobooks on any device. It’s basically a Netflix for reading (and listening to books).

“With Kindle Unlimited, you won’t have to think twice before you try a new author or genre—you can just start reading and listening,” said Russ Grandinetti, Senior Vice President, Kindle. “In addition to offering over 600,000 eBooks, Kindle Unlimited is also by far the most cost-effective way to enjoy audiobooks and eBooks together. With thousands of Whispersync for Voice-enabled audiobooks to choose from, you can easily switch between reading and listening to a book, allowing the story to continue even when your eyes are busy. We hope you take advantage of the 30-day free trial and try it for yourself.”

The service may not offer all the books you’re looking for – just as Netflix doesn’t stream all the movies you’re looking for – but it offers enough popular titles to pique the interest of avid readers. It doesn’t have much of a Stephen King selection, for example, but it has the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Harry Potter series, Life of Pi, and the DIary of a Wimpy Kid books, to name a few. It does include hundreds of thousands of Kindle exclusives, and thousands of “short-read” ebooks with less than a hundred pages, including Kindle Singles.

Amazon is offering a free three-month Audible membership to those who sign up for Kindle Unlimited.

For the company, it’s yet another way to suck people into the broader Amazon ecosystem, which is rapidly expanding with new shopping services, exclusive streaming video, streaming audio, and a new advanced smartphone.

You can browse Kindle Unlimited’s offerings here.

  • Kindle Unlimited Subscription Service Spotted in the Wild

Kindle Unlimited Subscription Service Spotted in the Wild

Before it was quickly removed from Amazon’s pages, some hawk-eyed users spotted a landing page for a service called “Kindle Unlimited” floating about in the wild.

According to a web cache, Kindle Unlimited will offer over 600,000 titles and “thousands of audiobooks” on any device for $9.99 per month.

GigaOm also points to an active page with results for a “KU test” which lists 638,416 titles and 7,351 ‘Whispersync for Voice’ titles.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, considering we heard reports last months that Amazon was currently in talks with publishers about a subscription service.

Of course, Amazon already has a sort-of subscription ebook service – their Kindle Owners Lending Library, which is free for Amazon Prime members.

The 600,000+ titles available in the Kindle Unlimited test mainly come from Amazon’s own publishing arm and the ones available through the lending library. It doesn’t look like major publishers like HarperCollins or Simon&Schuster have their titles available on the yet-to-be-officially-revealed service, however.

If Kindle Unlimited does in fact go live, Amazon will at least have a foot in the door with every major form of subscription-based media – movies and TV with Prime Instant Video and Music with the newly-unveiled Prime Music.

  • Amazon’s Smartphone Will Apparently Look Like This

Rumors of Amazon launching a smartphone have been around for years, but it’s been established for a while now that it is indeed real, and now we appear to have our first clear look at it.

BGR got the exclusive, and naturally, the image is all over social media.

As you can see, it looks pretty smartphoney – basically like devices you’ve seen before. Nothing weird.

BGR has been reporting a number of exclusive stories related to the device recently, saying it features 3D effects to help differentiate it from competitors, but also that that’s just “the tip of the iceberg”. You can read their full “in-depth” look at the phone’s software here.

The company is expected to unveil the device in over a month, and launch it in the third quarter.

It was really only a matter of time before Amazon added a smartphone to its line-up of Kindle devices. Why wouldn’t it? It will be interesting to see how it’s priced, and how consumers respond. With Nokia’s devices and services business now officially part of Microsoft, and Amazon entering the market., it looks like we’re getting into the most competitive smartphone landscape we’ve seen so far.

  • Kindles Are Super Cheap Right Now

Kindles Are Super Cheap Right Now

It looks like Amazon is running a Kindle promotion for Mother’s Day, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t snag one for yourself (or if you’re also a mother, treat yoself).

For a limited time, your basic (ad-supported) Kindle model is only $49–meaning that Amazon has just knocked $20 off the normal price.

Also, if you’re looking for a little more involved purchase, the Kindle Paperwhite has also been discounted $20 during the promotion. The Kindle Paperwhite with Wi-Fi is $99 for a limited time (limit of one per customer).

Mother’s Day is Sunday May 11th, and if you have a mom who’s a voracious reader and has yet to jump on the e-reader bandwagon–this is about as cheap as you’re going to find a brand new Kindle.

  • Amazon Is Giving Away Almost $17 Worth Of Apps Today

The Amazon Appstore is still one of the very best Android and Kindle app stores around. Heck, the Free App of the Day promotion ensures that you’ll never run of new apps to experience on your mobile device. If you feel the need for even more free apps though, Amazon has you covered for today.

Amazon announced this morning that nine highly-rated apps are going free today on the Amazon Appstore for Kindle and Android. Unlike previous promotions, all of the apps included in today’s promotion are all games so no productivity or creativity apps this time around, I’m afraid. Still, the free games available today will appeal to a wide range of consumers so you’ll definitely want to check them out.

    Here’s the full list:

  • Wreck-It Ralph (Kindle Tablet Edition)
  • Ski Safari (Kindle Tablet Edition)
  • LUMI
  • Buddy & Me
  • Sonic Jump
  • Gravity Guy
  • Wheel of Fortune
  • HorseWorld 3D: My Riding Horse
  • Where’s Tappy?
  • Once you’ve grabbed those nine apps, you might want to check out today’s Free App of the Day as well – The Nut Job (The Official App of the Movie). It features a storybook with stills from the upcoming film, a variety of mini-games and a coloring book. It’s the perfect companion app for the child in your life that likes terrible animated films.

Like always, the above apps will be available for free only for today. After that, they go back to the absurdly expensive price of $0.99.

  • Microsoft Is Making Its Own Reader App [Rumor]

When it comes to reading eBooks on a Windows device, you really only have two options – Nook or Kindle. Now it looks like Microsoft wants to finally build a reader app to compete with those two options.

Gizmodo reports that a new job listing on Microsoft’s site says the company is looking for an engineer to join its Music, Video and Reading team. The same team has already built products like Xbox Music and Xbox Video, and this job listing makes it appear that their next project may be Xbox Reader.

    Here’s the official description:

As an SDE, you will be on the team building a groundbreaking interactive reading app on Windows, which incorporates books, magazines, and comics. In this position you will be expected to drive, design, and deliver the features that you work on. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative, cross-discipline team environment, and a passion for digital entertainment.

While not a confirmation, it certainly looks like Microsoft is working on its own Reader app. It’s a little strange too considering how much money Microsoft previously pumped into Barnes & Noble. In 2012, Microsoft was pushing the Nook app on Windows 8 as part of their investment. Perhaps Microsoft doesn’t see a future for Nook and is working on a replacement in case Barnes & Noble kills Nook. It could also just be the result of Microsoft wanting its users to stick with its products and services on Windows with the trifecta of Xbox Video, Xbox Music and Xbox Reader.

Whatever the cause – it’s probably safe to say that we’ll be seeing an Xbox Reader app this year. It only makes sense for Microsoft to have its own reading app. After all, both Google and Apple have offered a reading app on their platforms for years now. Microsoft needs to catch up.

  • Kindle Worlds Nabs Licenses For G.I. Joe, Veronica Mars And More

In 2013, Amazon launched Kindle Worlds as a way to let fans write fan fiction and sell it via the Kindle digital publishing platform. It was kind of a brilliant idea since it keeps fans engaged with a franchise when it’s off the air and it nets the licensees extra money for work it doesn’t have to do. Since then, the program has expanded to include a few more big name franchises, but this week’s addition might be its biggest yet.

Amazon announced this morning that it has entered into an agreement with Hasbro to add G.I. Joe to Kindle Worlds. Fans can now write and sell fan fiction based on their favorite characters, like Duke, Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander.

“Since 1964, G.I. JOE has inspired the imagination of multiple generations by providing a backdrop of excitement and adventure. Whether exploring the secrets of the mummy’s tomb, or defending freedom from the evil plots of COBRA, G.I. JOE has been there,” said Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s Director of Global Publishing. “It is with equal excitement that Hasbro now enters a new segment of the business by embracing the concept of open-source storytelling, and officially unlocking the world of G.I. JOE to our fans through Amazon’s Kindle Worlds.”

While G.I. Joe fan fiction is nothing new, this is a big step for Hasbro as the company has traditionally been very protective of its brands. If this goes over well, the company may very well add its others franchises, like Transformers and My Little Pony, to the program as well.

G.I. Joe isn’t the only big license this time around, however, as Amazon has also worked with Warner Bros. to get the Veronica Mars license. Now fan fiction writers can continue the story of their favorite detective as they eagerly await the arrival of the new film.

Alongside Veronica Mars, Warner Bros. has also given the okay for Kindle Worlds writers to create worlds based on Ravenswood.

“Our Kindle Worlds collaboration with Amazon Publishing has been tremendously successful since its introduction last year,” said Leslie Morgenstein, President of Alloy Entertainment. “Adding Ravenswood and Veronica Mars to the platform is a great way for us to gain deeper engagement with fans as they explore their own creative story adaptations.”

Finally, Amazon has licensed content from two best-selling authors and comics:

  • The Abnorm Chronicles, set in the World of Marcus Sakey’s best-selling, Edgar Award-nominated novel Brilliance, the first in a forthcoming trilogy, recently optioned by Legendary Pictures for a major motion picture.
  • The Lizzy Gardner Files, set in the universe of Theresa Ragan’s best-selling romantic suspense series starring private investigator Lizzy Gardner.
  • Quantum and Woody and Eternal Warrior, inspired by the relaunched universes from Valiant Entertainment’s classic comic properties.
  • “Kindle Worlds continues to grow quickly with new licenses across the pop culture spectrum, and we are excited to expand our World selection for writers,” said Nick Loeffler, General Manager of Kindle Worlds. “In just a few months since our launch, we’ve published hundreds of new stories with great customer reviews reflecting the high quality of so many of these submissions. While it’s very early days, we are thrilled with the initial reception from licensors and readers and look forward to adding additional Worlds soon.”

If you’ve got what it takes to write G.I. Joe fan fiction for a living, you find out more here.

  • Amazon Set To Release Game Console In 2014 [Report]

In August of last year, we got word that Amazon was going to enter the fairly new Android game console market. The device would help the company get a better foothold in the living room by offering a device that played games, movies and music. We haven’t heard much about it since then, but a recent report indicates that the project is still alive.

VG24/7 reports that Amazon and its subsidiary – Lab 126 – are still hard at work on the rumored Android game console. According to VG24/7’s sources, the console is being built to compete directly with the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft as well as consoles from Ouya and MadCatz.

So, what will Amazon’s console look like? It’s said that it currently looks like a PSone with sharp edges, but that design will surely change before launch. Amazon doesn’t want to be caught with a hardware design that seems old fashioned compared to its competitors and will likely come up with something similar to its Kindle design.

As for its specs, all we know is that it will likely use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs and cost less than $300. If Amazon uses a Snapdragon 800 or the new 805, we could have a pretty powerful games console on our hands. Of course, the quality of the games would still be dependent on the developers themselves.

Speaking of which, Amazon has its own game development studio as well as an extensive set of developer tools for Android game developers. If Amazon was smart, it would combine the two to help bring exclusive games to its device that really sell the hardware. The competition seems content to just have tablet games on their consoles so Amazon has a chance to do something special here, but it’s really up to how open Amazon wants to be. If it lets anybody publish games on the device, we might end up with another Ouya.

That being said, Amazon still has a while to get this right. While there’s no specific mention of a release date, the console will likely not see a release before summer.

  • Amazon Really Wants You To Buy A Kindle Fire HDX, Will Let You Pay It Off In Installments

Over the years, Amazon has used various deals and promotions to increase sales of its Kindle Fire tablet line. Those promotions seemingly work as the tablets remain the best-selling items on Amazon. Now the online retailer is trying a new method to get more Kindle Fires into the hands of even more customers.

Amazon announced over the weekend a new payment plan that will let customers buy either a Kindle Fire HDX or Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ for a quarter of the price. After the initial down payment, customers will then pay back another quarter of the device’s price every ninety days.

For example, the Kindle Fire HDX, which normally costs $229, can now be yours for only $57.25. After purchasing the tablet at this price, you’ll be automatically billed $57.25 every 90 days until the device is paid off in full. As for the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″, you’ll pay $94.75 upfront and then pay that same amount three more times over the course of the next 270 days.

What’s interesting about this latest ploy is that everyone can take part. For these kind of deals, most retailers would want to apply interest or credit checks. Amazon is having none of that, however, as this is strictly a no strings attached kind of deal. The only thing you’ll have to look out for is that the payments will be automatically billed to your card every 90 days.

That being said, you will want to read the fine print as there are some rules you’ll need to be aware of. For example, the above deal is only available until midnight on December 24. Amazon notes that you customers must use a credit card to make the initial down payment, but a debit card is fine for the remaining payments. You can also pay back the full remaining balance at any time, but the same can’t be said of the installments.

If all of that sounds good to you, you can check out the promotion page here. If you’d rather pay for the entire device upfront, Amazon will most likely put the Kindle Fire HDX on sale one last time before Christmas.

  • You Can Now Gift Amazon Coins To Your Kindle-Owning Friends And Family

Earlier this year, Amazon got into the digital currency game with Amazon Coins. In essence, Kindle users can use Coins to buy games, apps and in-app purchases on mostly everything in the Amazon Appstore. Now those same Kindle users can gift Amazon Coins to other Kindle users.

Amazon announced today that it’s now letting users gift Amazon Coins to others just in time for the holidays. It’s being billed as an easy, yet effective, gift for those in among your family and friends that own a Kindle or use the Amazon Appstore on their Android device.

So, how does this all work? You simply buy Amazon Coins as you normally would, but choose to gift them at the store page. From there, you put in the email address of the person receiving the coins and Amazon takes care of the rest.

“Customers love using Amazon Coins in the Amazon Appstore and on Kindle Fire to purchase apps and games,” said Mike George, Vice President of Apps and Games at Amazon. “We know that during the holidays finding that perfect gift can be hard. So, we’re making it easy for you to give the game-playing kids or app-savvy friends and family in your life just what they want – great apps and games to use on their phones and tablets. And remember, if you are a Kindle Fire owner, we automatically deposited 500 Coins in your account. So, if you haven’t used them yet, happy shopping.”

It goes without saying, but the practice of gifting Amazon Coins won’t be restricted to just the holidays. You will get 20 percent off your Coins purchase, however, if you buy them before January 5. You can start giving Amazon Coins here.

  • Kindle FreeTime Gets New Education Features

Kindle FreeTime Gets New Education Features

More and more kids these days are making the switch from TVs and video games to consuming everything on tablets. While tablets are great, the personal nature of the device also makes it harder for parents to make sure their children are fulfilling their obligations before they start to play games or watch TV shows on Netflix. That’s where Amazon FreeTime comes in.

Amazon announced that its FreeTime app – an app that allows parents to control when and how their children use a Kindle Fire device – will soon be getting an educational shot in the arm. This update will allow parents to set educational goals that their children must complete before they’re allowed to play games or use other entertainment apps on the device.

“Kindle Fire is already the best tablet for kids and families—and now we’re making it even better,” said Peter Larsen, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “We know kids spend a lot of time every day looking at screens, and we’re excited to add new tools that help parents make this time more educational. Parents can use features like ‘Learn First’ to ensure study comes before play and set daily educational goals for reading and learning. If you subscribe to FreeTime Unlimited, your kids will enjoy thousands of new educational books, apps, games and videos.”

Of course, edutainment doesn’t mean what it used to mean. Amazon wants parents to know that there’s plenty of content available in Kindle FreeTime that will make kids want to learn. Here’s what you will find:

  • Thousands of common core-aligned leveled readers and supplemental readers are coming to Kindle FreeTime Unlimited and the Kindle Store—most of these books will be available for the first time digitally. Hundreds of these titles will be available in time for Christmas, with the rest coming early next year, from trusted educational publishers like Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Starwalk Kids Media LLC, The Child’s World, Sleeping Bear Press, Lerner Publishing, and Cherry Lake Publishing.
  • Kid-friendly educational apps such as Team Umizoomi Math, Super Why!, Stack the States, Curious George at the Zoo, Elmo Loves 123’s, Write the Alphabet, Kids Learn To Read and more.
  • Award-winning and engaging educational apps from BrainPOP and Agnitus.
  • Over 2,000 educational TV Shows and Movies from well recognized educational content providers including Sesame Street, PBS, Reading Rainbow and BabyFirst TV.
  • Beginning level foreign language video learning programs for Spanish, French, Chinese and more from Little Pim.
  • Alongside all of the educational content, FreeTime will also be updated with two new features to make sure your kids are using the Kindle when you want them to:

  • Bedtime: No more cartoons in the middle of the night—set a Bedtime so FreeTime only works the time of day you choose—for example, between 8 am and 8 pm.
  • Weekend and Weekday Time Limits: All days of the week aren’t created equal—configure educational goals and screen time limits differently for weekends and weekdays.
  • On a final note, Amazon says that parents will soon be able to check out an eBook from a public library and then make it available to their children in FreeTime. Prime members who use the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library will be able to do the same.

  • Kindle Fire Tablets See Record Sales on Amazon

Amazon’s line of Kindle Fire tablets saw record-breaking sales over the weekend, as the second-generation Kindle Fire HD, and the third-generation Kindle Fire HDX 7″, were the two top-selling items this holiday season for the world’s largest online retailer.

A report released by Amazon detailing the success of Kindle Fire tablets from Black Friday through Cyber Monday says that they saw the best sales numbers for Kindle tablets of all time. The site offered extra savings this year, with a $50-off rebate on Kindle Fire tablets. The price for an HD model was just $119 and the HDZ 7″ was reduced to the lowest-ever price of $179.

The announcement from Amazon came yesterday just after the 2013 IBM Holiday Benchmark report was released, indicating that Black Friday’s 2013 sales had dropped to their lowest since 2009.

Many retailers offered extra savings this year, as well as longer store hours, and had record-breaking sales numbers, despite the information that sales were the lowest in five years.

Amazon Kindle Vice-President, Neil Lindsay, said, “We’re excited that so many customers have chosen Kindle this holiday season—and it’s just getting started! Our new Kindle Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers are the best we’ve ever built, and we can’t wait for customers to unwrap their gifts this holiday.”

  • Amazon VIPs Get To Try Out Kindle Fire HDX For Free

Are you still trying to decide which tablet to get yourself or a loved one this holiday season? It’s a hard choice, especially when you can’t try out the device yourself for a bit to see if your life would be improved by it. Well, Amazon has a new offer that you may be interested in.

Phandroid reports that Amazon is now giving away Kindle Fire HDX models and the Kindle Paperwhite to “VIP customers” for free. Of course, these aren’t gifts, but merely a free one month trial period to see if you like Amazon’s new devices. After the month is up, you can either send it back at no charge to you, or keep it and be charged its normal price.

Free trials are nothing new, but it’s definitely an interesting way to market a tablet. After all, most people forget they’re even on a free trial after the first week and then end up getting charged for the product after the trial period is over. Would the same thing happen to somebody trying out a tablet for a month? Probably not, but sticking with the tablet for a month will undoubtedly push some consumers over the edge into buying it.

Unfortunately, this promotion isn’t available to everyone. As mentioned above, Amazon is being incredibly selective with the promotion and only sending invites to customers that it considers to be “VIP.” We have no idea what that means, but it probably means customers who are Amazon Prime members. Even then, you also probably have to do a lot of your shopping on Amazon to be considered eligible for the offer of a free one month Kindle Fire HDX trial period.

While it may not be the same as a free trial period, check out previous Kindle Fire HDX coverage to see if it’s the tablet for you this holiday season.
