  • Kevin Spacey Has Signed On To A Role In J.D. Salinger Biopic

Kevin Spacey has reportedly joined the cast of Rebel In The Rye, a biopic about Catcher In The Rye author J.D. Salinger.

The film will star Nicholas Hoult as Salinger, and Spacey will play one of the author’s mentors, Story Magazine editor Whit Burnett. The story will reportedly focus quite a bit on Salinger’s “rebellious” youth–hence the title–and the years surrounding the publication of his hit novel, after which he famously became reclusive.

Spacey has a full schedule of late; not only is he still starring on the hit Netflix show House Of Cards–which comes back March 4–he’s also head of Relativity Studios in Hollywood and is now a spokesman for WISekey, a group dedicated to cyber security.

“I’ve always been fascinated by this particular space. Now that I am the chairman of the studio, in light of the Sony hacks last year, this is a wake-up call for anybody, not just in my business but for any business. If you want to protect your content and you want to protect your intellectual property, now it’s my responsibility to make sure we do that,” Kevin said.

Spacey’s other projects this year include Billionaire Boys Club and Baby Driver; he’s also playing Richard Nixon in Elvis & Nixon.

Spacey recently left London’s Old Vic Theatre after spending 11 years as artistic director, and says now that he’s excited to start a new chapter of his creative life with Relativity.

“They thought we were crazy when we chose to do House of Cards with an online streaming service; they thought I was crazy when I went to run The Old Vic Theatre when no one thought it could be saved; and this move with Relativity will be proof for some that we really are crazy. This is an incredible opportunity to make great entertainment. I’m thrilled at this next evolution in my career, having run an independent production company to now be able to run a studio is a great challenge, and I’ve learned that in the end it’s the risk takers that are rewarded,” Kevin Spacey said.

  • Diane Kruger Latest Jared Leto Photobombing Victim

Diane Kruger is the latest victim to fall prey to Jared Leto’s photobombing skills. The Suicide Squad actor photobombed Kruger as she posed for pictures at LACMA’s 2015 Art+Film Gala on Saturday.

Attending the event with her partner, Joshua Jackson, Diane Kruger posted the shot–and a message to Jared Leto–via her Instagram account.

“Just you wait, I’ll get you back f…..? @jaredleto,” she captioned it.

Diane Kruger stunned at the event. Sporting two shades of bright blue, the actress wore an asymetrical strapless top with a train, and blue satin pants.

Her photobomber was handsome, as always, in his black tux jacket, black pants, and a red satin shirt. Jared Leto’s shirt matched his hair, which was dyed the same shade of red.

Diane Kruger isn’t the only victim of Jared Leto’s antics. He has also photobombed Ireland Baldwin, Anne Hathway, and Kevin Spacey at different events.

Fortunately for Jared Leto, Diane Kruger and the rest of his victims have excellent senses of humor.

  • Kate Mara Talks Rivalry With Sister Rooney Mara

Kate Mara has held her own as an actress just fine, thank you very much. Her turn on House of Cards made her a hot topic of conversation. Her role alongside Johnny Depp in Transcendence may not have been the best way to spend that new-found capital, but she survived.

Despite her up and coming status in Hollywood, Kate Mara still gets asked the same question over and over: Is there much of a competitive streak between her and her famous sister Rooney Mara?

Kata Mara’s sister Rooney is making news of her own lately after a lesbian scene in a film with Cate Blanchett. Sorry to say, that might overshadow the going-downtown scene Kate shared with Kevin Spacey.

But Kate Mara insists there is no competition between her and her sister. She told Glamour magazine recently:

”The other thing I’ve learned to deal with? People always want to know: ‘Is there competition between you and your sister?’ Luckily there isn’t.”

Even though her competition is not with her sister, Kate Mara does admit that Hollywood is an incredibly competitive place.

“But rivalry is an industrywide obsession – and it’s toxic. I have to remind myself that just because a person got a job I wanted, it doesn’t make me any ‘less than.’ When I’m at my strongest mentally, I don’t ever compare myself to others.”

Kate Mara explains that rivalry among actresses rears its head when you are going for a part and don’t get cast.

”As an actor 90 percent of the time, you’re getting told, ‘No, sorry, you’re not right.’ I don’t know that you ever really get used to that. I’m definitely better than I was; now if I don’t get a part, I believe it’s because that ‘no’ will open up my time for a role or experience I was meant to have.”

Regardless of what roles she gets or doesn’t get, she believes she is successful for a simple reason.

”I’ve always felt blessed to be doing what I love, and that’s why I consider myself successful.”

  • House of Cards: Kevin Spacey’s Southern Accent Sounds a Little Weird, But Who Cares?

From scene one, Netflix’s original series House of Cards has been over-the-top. That’s part of its charm. Like its main character, his accent, the city of Washington DC, and American politics in general, it’s a bit absurd. And that’s ok.

Over the past few years, House of Cards has continued to entertain – even with its tendency to turn to camp. One of the big reasons it remains essential viewing is Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood, a truly unique and wonderful character. And one of the things that makes him so unique and wonderful is that accent.

That accent. What the hell is it?

Vox attempts to explain why Spacey’s southern drawl might sound a bit off at times. According to linguists, Spacey’s accent isn’t necessarily wrong, it’s just outdated. Pre-WWII, in fact.

    From Vox:

There are a couple of distinct features that make Underwood “sound” Southern to some people. One of these traits is his “R-lessness,” which an expert would call his “non-rhoticity.”

“This is when r at the ends of syllables is pronounced like a vowel or deleted, so that car and cars sound like cah and cahs,” Becker explained to me. You can hear it in the way Underwood says words like “uninformed” and “careless.”

This is one of the features that Thomas considers a stereotypical Southern feature. It sounds the way people think Southerners sound, but it’s actually a feature that is disappearing in Southern speech.

Also think about when Frank Underwood says the word “whip”. Is it in your head? He says “hwip”, right? He inverts the first two consonants. This is another example of Spacey taking a page from how southerners talked decades ago – but not necessarily how they talk today.

Of course, “southerner” is a very broad description that encompasses thousands of dialects. But there are certain vocal patterns that are consistent with what a regular TV audience considers “southern”. Spacey goes over-the-top, but it’s always entertaining.

Plus, you just love listening to him talk. And in the end, that’s all that matters.

  • Robin Wright Reunites With Fiancé Ben Foster in the City of Love

Robin Wright has her engagement ring back on her finger and is celebrating her reunion with fiancé Ben Foster in the City of Love.

The on-again-off-again couple were spotted enjoying a romantic dinner Wednesday in a back room at L’Atelier Saint-Germain de Joël Robuchon in Paris.

Ben Foster was said to be “very attentive and sweet” to Robin Wright, an onlooker told People magazine.

“They were very low-key and cute together. You could tell he was really into her,” said the source of the couple who split in November before reuniting before the Golden Globes.

Robin Wright, who is 48, and her 34-year-old fiancé also attended the Giorgio Armani Privé Haute Couture show on Tuesday together, along with Wright’s daughter Dylan Penn.

Robin Wright, who is currently starring opposite Kevin Spacey in House of Cards, is “in a very good place now” with Ben Foster, according to a source close to the actress.

“Ben is the nicest guy. She knows she has a keeper,” an insider told Us Weekly.

“There were a bunch of issues before, a lot because of distance and her schedule, but they are working on them. It is worth it to be with a guy like this who really cares about her so much.”

People‘s source also confirmed that they are really perfect for each other.

“They’re ecstatically happy,” said the source.

Despite all the good vibes going around, the couple reportedly are not in a rush to make it official just yet.

“Marriage doesn’t define her,” said the source. “That’s not to say it won’t happen, just that things as they are, are pretty great. In many ways, she and Ben couldn’t be a better match.”

For the time being, Robin Wright and Foster are just “loving spending time together.”

“Robin is in a good, healthy place,” said the source for People. “In many ways, things are coming together. Ben is a part of that, her kids are a part of that and her work has never been more rewarding.”

  • Kevin Spacey To Tell The Advertising Industry What’s Up

Frank Underwood himself will be headlining the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Mixx Conference next month, the IAB announced.

Kevin Spacey will will deliver a keynote address on September 30th, with a “special presentation discussing how digital platforms are transforming the way that artists and content creators thrive in today’s entertainment landscape.”

If you’ll recall, Spacey gave a tremendous presentation about the media landscape last year at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.

The IAB says Spacey’s address will keep with its theme for this year’s conference, which is, “Digital’s Renaissance Moment: Art, Beauty and Human Emotion in Marketing”. The bureau says it will “serve as a guidepost for exploring how brands, creatives and publishers can partner to change hearts and minds by inspiring and motivating consumers.”

Katie Couric will be there too (on the 29th), as will AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, and other high-level execs from major media companies.

“Great marketing has always had the ability to touch people – and compel them to act,” said IAB President and CEO Randall Rothenberg. “Considering the wealth of creative opportunities afforded by digital, interactive marketing not only has power to uphold these timeless principles, but to drive them to new heights. And, this impressive roster of IAB MIXX Conference speakers is sure to tackle the issues that we need to address today in order to ensure a vibrant future across the digital ecosystem.”

Spacey will no doubt help get some butts in the seats. It’s unclear whether he’ll be showing up with BBQ or not.

Earlier in September, Spacey will be headlining Content Marketing World.

  • Kevin Spacey: Playing Johnny Carson in Biopic?

Kevin Spacey can do a really good Johnny Carson impression. But would Spacey want to do a whole movie as Johnny Carson?

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the star of the Netflix series House of Cards dished on lots of topics, including the possibility of his playing Carson in an NBC biopic about the life of the late-night talk show host.

Spacey had already narrated a PBS documentary about Carson’s life, and soon after the idea of a biopic was floated, his name was floated too. But Spacey is a Hollywood outsider in a lot of ways. He says he has not been approached to do the movie, and would likely not do it if asked. Not that he would not be interested, just not with NBC.

“If [NBC] wants to start writing as if they’re a cable network, then absolutely I’d take a look at it,” he says. “But I’m afraid it would just be too marshmallow, and Johnny deserves something that’s tougher and with more expletives.”

Spacey does lots of impressions quite well: Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, Clint Eastwood, John Gielgud, Marlon Brando, Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, William Hurt, Bill Clinton, and many others.

When he played Jack Abramoff in the biopic Casino Jack, he had the opportunity to poke fun at Abramoff’s tendency to do bad impressions. In particular he did an impression of Al Pacino in the Godfather, badly. This was particularly odd, since Spacey does a really good Al Pacino, himself.

House of Cards show runners have said that they hear so much of Spacey doing impressions, keeping them in stitches, that they have considered writing in a bit where his character, Frank Underwood, does a Marlon Brando impression.

  • Kate Mara’s Star Power Is On The Rise

Kate Mara has always been a powerful actress, but with the success of the Netflix series House of Cards, her star power is definitely on the rise.

The 30-year-old actress has been acting for 17 years. Her first role was in Law & Order when she was 14 and over the years, she’s been one of those actresses you see over and over but can’t quite recall their name.

She’s starred in numerous television shows and made appearances in acclaimed films like Brokeback Mountain and 127 Hours. But, she never quite broke into the spotlight.

    But, all that is changing.

Her strong performance in House of Cards playing newspaper reporter Zoe Barnes has led to roles in some high-profile films that are in the works.

Mara just signed on to play Sue Storm (Invisible Girl) in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, joining other rising Hollywood stars Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), Miles Teller (Dr. Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm/The Thing).

The project has been in development over the past five years and is expected to be one of the biggest summer blockbusters in 2015.

Mara said working with Academy Award-winner Kevin Spacey, who plays Frank Underwood on House of Cards, is a wonderful experience and nothing like she imagined.

“Most people have this sort of picture of him as – and I sort of did as well before I started working with him – I thought he was going to be very, very serious, and a little intimidating,” said Mara. “And that’s not my experience with him at all. He’s hilarious and with all the dramatic stuff we had to do together, he kept it light with me and I always felt really comfortable with him.”

  • Kate Mara Asked Rooney Mara for David Fincher Advice

    SPOILERS BELOW…

House of Cards star Kate Mara, 31, admitted in a recent interview that she asked her sister Rooney Mara for advice on working with director David Fincher in the hit Netflix series.

“I ask my sister for advice if I’m ever questioning whether to take a job. I called her for advice on Fincher when I first started working with him.”

Rooney Mara, 28, worked with Fincher on 2010’s The Social Network and in the 2011 movie adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Scandinavian thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Mara has been acting a few years longer than her younger sister.

“It’s such a special thing to have a family member doing the same job as you. She didn’t start acting until much later, but it makes me feel sort of looked-after, having her and knowing that she “gets” it,” she said.

Mara has been busy promoting Season Two of House of Cards which released February 14 on Netflix.

The political drama is a Netflix original series starring Kevin Spacey as scheming politician Frank Underwood and Robin Wright as his wife Claire. Mara stars as political journalist Zoe Barnes. Barnes is killed in the first episode of Season Two,

She stars opposite Martin Sheen in the British drama Trash, which is scheduled for a May 2014 release in the UK.

Well, you if you weren’t already planning on attending Content Marketing World this year, you have a big reason to do so now. It was announced on Friday that Kevin Spacey will be headlining the event, providing the closing keynote.

And if you’ve seen this speech he gave last year at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, you’ll probably be even more compelled to attend:

In fact, that speech prompted the Content Marketing Institute, which hosts Content Marketing World, to put out a blog post in August about “corporate storytelling lessons from Kevin Spacey”. Now, content marketers will get to hear some advice from Spacey directly.

“We are beyond thrilled to have Kevin Spacey joins us for this year’s event,” said Joe Pulizzi, founder of the Content Marketing Institute. “Mr. Spacey is a dynamic actor, writer, producer and director. His critically-acclaimed Netflix original series, House of Cards, has broken content distribution barriers in television. We believe he has great insight that applies to content marketing and corporate storytelling that will resonate with our audience.”

  • Netflix’s ‘House Of Cards’ Gets Kevin Spacey SAG Award Nomination

The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for 2014 were announced today. Kevin Spacey has received a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role on Netflix’s House of Cards.

He’s up against Steve Buscemi for Boardwalk Empire, Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad, Jeff Daniels for The Newsroom and Peter Dinklage for Game of Thrones. Not exactly a gimme.

While this is Spacey’s first nomination for the category, he’s no stranger to the SAG awards. He won two in 2000 for American Beauty, and was nominated in 2009 for Male TV Movie Or Miniseries for Recount, in 1998 for Motion Picture Cast for L.A. Confidential and in 1996 for Male Support for The Usual Suspects.

The 2014 nomination only adds to the increasing number of awards Netflix shows, and House of Cards in particular, have been nominated for. It started with fourteen Emmy nominations for Netflix originals, nine of which were for House of Cards. The show ended up winning three of them. The show is also up for a People’s Choice Award (competing against its Netflix peers Arrested Development and Orange is the New Black) and three Writers Guild awards. Orange is the New Black is also up for four Writers Guild Awards.

  • House Of Cards: Season 2 Premiere Date Announced

The House Of Cards season 2 premiere date has finally been announced, and fans of the show will be excited to hear that it is not too far off. One of the first Netflix originals, House Of Cards became an Emmy winning show after its first season, gaining a lot of popularity with Netflix users.

The binge-watching favorite is back, and in a matter of months fans will be able to feast their eyes on the power-hungry character of Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey. House of Cards will return to Netflix with its full 13 episode season on February 14.

In addition to Kevin Spacey, the show features a top-notch cast including Robin Wright, Kate Mara and more. The first season of the critically acclaimed show was nominated for nine Emmys, including acting nominations for both Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

House Of Cards features a Congressman (Spacey), who works with his equally conniving wife (Wright), to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him. The second season will feature the couple continuing their rise to power, as threats build up on multiple fronts. At the same time, Zoe Barnes (Mara), an ambitious reporter, will continue to get closer to the truth about his crimes.

As it did with the first season, Netflix will present the entire season of House Of Cards at once, allowing for fans to binge-watch, a practice that is becoming more popular with shows such as House Of Cards, and several others.

A new teaser trailer was also presented that reveals the date, and with no sound, simply shows Robin Wright’s character smoking a cigarette. Much is left to the imagination of the fans of the show, allowing for people to get even more excited about the upcoming season that premieres on Valentine’s Day.

House Of Cards is a political drama that has gained a lot of attention over the past year, as fans continue to spread the word, and convince other people to get hooked on the popular show.

  • House of Cards Season 2 Release Date Now Official: Valentine’s Day 2014

House of Cards Season 2 Release Date Now Official: Valentine’s Day 2014

It’s official, you guys. Netflix’s hit original series House of Cards will be back for its second season on Valentine’s Day, 2014.

That means that season two comes just over a year after the show premiered its first season (February 1st, 2013). Netflix’s official House of Cards Twitter account just tweeted out this simple message: 02.14.14.

Oh yeah, and a teaser –

A few weeks ago, we told you that filming on the second season was just about to wrap.

Will the second season be the final season? Well, that’s still up in the air. Earlier this year, one of the show’s producers suggested that House of Cards would probably be a two-and-done series. But Netflix’s content chief Ted Sarandos recently said that a season three may happen after all.

“Our intent is that the show keep going for sure. It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons…talks are in progress right now, so stay tuned,” he said at Film Independent’s annual confab back in October.

If House of Cards did end its run after just two seasons, it wouldn’t be for lack of popularity or critical acclaim. Not only did the show give Netflix a few Emmys, but the show seems to have played a big part in Netflix’s success over the past year.

  • ‘House Of Cards’ Season 3 May Happen After All

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos gave a keynote speech at Film Independent’s annual confab over the weekend, suggesting that we might just see a third season of the Emmy-winning House of Cards.

Things hadn’t been looking very promising for the continuation of the series past the second season after comments recently made by one of the producers. Earlier this month, reports came out that Rick Cleveland, co-executive producer on the first two chapters of the series, said at the Vancouver International Film Festival that the first two seasons would probably be the only ones ever produced, noting that stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright like to do movies.

Showrunner Beau Williamson had indicated in the past, however, that he would like to continue on with the series, though the original Netflix deal was only for two seasons.

    Deadline quotes Sarandos as saying:

“Our intent is that the show keep going for sure. It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons.”

    ..

“Talks are in progress right now, so stay tuned.”

Obviously things could still go either way, but it is somewhat encouraging that Kevin Spacey recently gave an amazing speech about the Netflix model and how it’s changing the game. During that, he didn’t strike me as someone who was ready to walk away from the show.

I doubt money will be too big of an issue for Netflix, given that they’re planning on doubling their investment in original content. Keeping their biggest Emmy winner (so far) on the slate is probably a pretty big priority.

  • Here’s The Kevin Spacey Q&A That Followed That Amazing Speech

Actor Kevin Spacey gave a popular speech about the television industry – past, present and future – at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival last week. It has since been the topic of numerous industry headlines.

The House of Cards actor/executive producer also engaged in a Q&A at the event. The festival’s YouTube channel has shared part of that for your enjoyment:

The speech itself, which is a lot more inspiring (and time consuming) can be found here in its entirety.

  • Here’s That Kevin Spacey Speech You Keep Hearing About In Its Entirety

Actor Kevin Spacey, star of the nine-time Emmy-nominated Netflix series House of Cards, has been making a lot of headlines over the past few days for a speech he gave at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival last week.

The whole speech has been made available on the official YouTube channel for the festival, so here you go. It’s about 45 minutes long, but it’s Kevin Spacey talking, so totally worth it.

He says that his role on House of Cards is probably the only reason he was asked to speak, but come on, Kevin. Your’e Kevin Spacey.

“From his unique perspective as a director, producer and actor working across the world on stage and screen, mainstream networks and the internet, Kevin Spacey considers the changes sweeping across our industry and the opportunities for innovation and creativity for those who live to tell stories and engage audiences,” the festival says in the video description.

And his thoughts about the industry are precisely why the talk has been in the headlines. The industry is watching the Netflix approach closely as it makes history in television consumption.
