Kelly Ripa on Regis: “I Haven’t Seen Him”

After Kelly Ripa took over Kathie Lee Gifford’s seat on the renamed Live! with Regis and Kelly, she spent ten years sitting next to Regis Philbin on the morning talk show. Despite the morning show couple’s memorable farewell in November 2011, it seems that Ripa never got personally close to Philbin.

Ripa reportedly told The Hollywood Reporter this week that she hasn’t seen her former co-host when asked if she kept in touch with Philbin. The comment was made at the publication’s celebration party for its ’35 Most Powerful People in Media’ issue. Ripa also compared Philbin to her new co-host, former New York Giants NFL star Michael Strahan, joking that “they’re both incredible football players.”

After Philbin retired, Ripa spent almost one year co-hosting Live! shows with a rotating cast of auditioning co-hosts, including Neil Patrick Harris, Jerry O’Connell, Joel McHale, Jerry Seinfeld, D.L. Hughley, Rob Lowe, and Mario Lopez before Strahan was chosen for the role.

Ripa attended The Hollywood Reporter’s event with her husband, actor Mark Consuelos. In addition to discussing co-hosts, Ripa and Consuelos bantered about whether former U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner should make a run for mayor of New York City:

  • Seth Meyers Chooses Lorne Michaels Over Kelly Ripa

Seth Meyers recently shot down the rumors that he will be the next co-host to sit beside Kelly Ripa on “Live!” when the new season kicks off in a couple of weeks, saying he loves the job he has (at Saturday Night Live).

“No, no, no, no, no,” he said when asked about the show. “I’m really in love with the job I have.”

However, it was recently announced that he’s teaming up with SNL creator Lorne Michaels for a sitcom project for NBC’s 2013 fall lineup. He’ll be working with his brother, MadTV‘s Josh Meyers, as well as Peter Grosz from The Colbert Report.

The project, which is so far unnamed, will see Meyers write and star with Michaels producing. I’m guessing that’s the real reason Meyers turned down the “Live!” spot, despite being well-received during several stints as guest host on the show. As for Kelly Ripa, apparently she’d rather have her BFF Anderson Cooper take the job, although it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

“We have a connection like nobody else,” she said. “I worship him!”

  • Kelly Ripa Co-Host: Seth Meyers Out, Anderson Cooper In?

It’s been an exhaustive nine months of searching for “Live! after Regis Philbin’s departure last November, but it looks to be drawing to a close soon. The producers have announced that they will be naming Kelly Ripa’s new co-host on September 4th.

Ripa has helmed the show with a whopping 59 guest hosts since Philbin took his leave, and some of those have filled in more than once. Seth Meyers of SNL and NFL star Michael Strahan are among those with the top appearances, and it’s been rumored for a while now that Meyers would be taking the permanent job of co-host. He shot down that talk, however, when asked about it last month.

“No, no, no, no, no,” he said. “I’m really in love with the job I have.”

While some fans have expressed that they want Ripa’s hunky husband, Mark Consuelos, to take the job, Ripa says her marriage wouldn’t withstand it. Word has it that the job will be given to someone who’s already hosted, which has started a wave of speculation, although one can narrow down the choices by leaving out the women who have stepped up over the past few months. It’s highly unlikely the producers would pair Ripa with another woman, banking instead on her ability to play off a member of the opposite sex. And although it’s not ultimately up to Ripa, she seems to have made her choice already: Anderson Cooper.

“We have a connection like nobody else,” she said. “I worship him!”

Cooper isn’t a likely choice, but the producers may surprise us come September 4th. The guests that day will be Claire Danes and “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips.
